Lonely Planet The Joy of Quiet Places: The World's Most Serene & Peaceful Spaces | 180 Ideas for Tranquil Trips | Packed with Tips on Where & When to Go | Stunning Photography
OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
With the hurried pace and the noise of life with its ever increasing demands on our time, this book feels like a breath of fresh air. It serves as an invitation to set aside the hustle and bustle and explore 60 of the world’s quietest places from Africa, Antarctica, Europe, Asia, North America to Oceania.
It highlights the history of each location alongside stunning photographs and offers practical advice on how to get there, the best time to visit, information on accessibility and amenities.
I’ve never seen a travel book that prioritizes the travelers’s needs to pause, rest, recharge and find renewal in the quiet and serene beauty of nature. Even curling up with it, reading about each trip and soaking in the beauty of each destination felt like a mini vacation!
I love this book!

This is such a wonderful coffee table travelling book about Quiet Places to travel to around the world.
What I loved about this book is the variety in the quiet places and that there are some that will be close to home whereas others are the other side of the world. It covers all the continents and every type of ecosystem. Whether you are a fan of hiking, beaches, quiet places within cities or historical monuments, there is something for everyone. The great outdoors obviously is featured in the vast amount of places and a lot are very remote but if you are in search of untrodden places by tourists, then it is perfect. I really liked the images that brought each place to life, they were stunning and definitely make this a brilliant coffee table book to dip in and out of. I also loved that for every place there was information on the accessibility of the destination. As a disabled person this is really important for me and I am so glad they included that information.
I did find a few inaccuracies which was annoying and thought the writing could do with a little more work. This is definitely true on the Q&A sections which weren't the best or most interesting and the interviewer came off as bored or rude a few times. If it was humour, it didn't read like it!
I have definitely added multiple places to my bucket list, there are so many different destinations and I felt they were chosen really well. Many are quite adventurous and off the beaten track, but there really is something for everyone.
Overall, if you read this book and don't come away with a handful of places you want to visit, then I would be shocked. It is a beautiful book and I highly recommend it for all travel lovers!
Please note that I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
Let’s be honest, we all crave quiet and a reprieve from the hustle and bustle and noise of daily life. For me, I find my joy in the quiet of nature. The Joy of Quiet Places is definitely my dream book. Inside its lovely pages you’ll discover helpful travel tips such as when is the best time of year to travel to a place and how to get there and even mentions whether places and spaces are handicap accessible. The layout of the book makes it easy to read, with informative facts, “Q&A” and “Don’t Miss” sections too.
Whether you want to Kayak among leviathan icebergs in Patagonia or quietly reflect in the temples of Ankor Cambodia or even take time to drink in the Milky Way in the Great Basin Desert, The Joy of Quiet Places will help you pick and plan your quiet destination.

Inspired by the purchase of the @alltrails App for a recent trip to Sedona, hubby and I decided to explore more hiking experiences at home in Louisana. After a morning in Kisachie National Forest, I realized it was the perfect time to gush about the latest travel book from Lonely Planet.
Each location offers a compelling description, details on how to get there and best experience the area, other similar destinations, and (my favorite) Q&A with a local expert. The photos are exceptional, as you’d expect, and the descriptions will have you packing your bags. (Fair Warning: This book has not decreased my need to visit Iceland.)
I love that these quiet places are celebrated in this beautiful book of the kind of quality photos and travel guides that make Lonely Planet a worldwide leader in the genre. I love the global perspective too, featuring places and photos from all hemispheres. It’s user-friendly too, with info on how to get to the quiet places and ideas to find joy while there. I highly recommend this as a gift for yourself or someone else, both as a practical starter for your adventures as well as a beautiful coffee table book.
This book truly feels like a breath of fresh air. Instead of the usual fast-paced travel guides, it invites readers to slow down and appreciate calm, restorative destinations around the world. I loved the combination of stunning photography and thoughtful travel insight, and even just reading it felt like a mini escape. A perfect pick for anyone craving a little quiet in a noisy world.
𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑱𝑶𝒀 𝑶𝑭 𝑸𝑼𝑰𝑬𝑻 𝑷𝑳𝑨𝑪𝑬𝑺 expands into the rest of the globe, highlighting serene spots from Africa & the Middle East, Americas & Antarctica, Asia, Europe, & Oceania. I am captivated by Turkey, Japan, South Korea, and naturally, the European libraries! I wouldn't say no to any of these spots though.
lovely travel guide full of many random places where you can find peace and quiet in the world. most will be extremely expensive or difficult to get to so are unachievable but it's nice to read about them regardless and enjoy the lovely pictures.
