A special anniversary edition, yet in essentials it remains the same…
Please note that this is not a new novel, rather, a new release. The most popular of award-winning, bestselling author Suzan Lauder’s novels, a Pride and Prejudice-inspired romance with a mystery twist, Alias Thomas Bennet has been recently editedto make it more readable and easier to follow. In addition, it is offered in a Spanish version.
When Fitzwilliam Darcy attends the Meryton assembly, he befriends a quiet, intelligent gentleman. In frequent visits to his friend’s home, he becomesacquainted with the Bennet family of Longbourn. Yet Mr. Darcy is distracted by a strange feeling of having met some of them before.
This is a different Bennet family from the cleverly crafted one in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Bennet is a responsible gentleman who takes an active role in the education and upbringing of all five of his well-behaved and clever daughters, managesLongbourn to be prosperous, and displays loving guidance towards Mrs. Bennet—a gentle, caring mother and wife.
A mystery lurks at Longbourn—a secret unknowneven to Elizabeth Bennet—and Mr. Darcy isentangled in its extraordinary revelations.
Who is Thomas Bennet?
This book contains scenes with mild sex and violence and one brief scene of non-explicit sexual violence that may be concerning to sensitive readers. The sexual violence does not include Elizabeth Bennet.
Somehow the bio is boring. I don't want to talk about me, I want to talk about books. So if you need to see the bio, scroll down. But to really know a bit about me, check out my "Loved It" list. It says a lot. Of course, I have about three times that many books rated at five stars, and they are all very special to me, each in their own way. Some are books others would just rank as "meh" but worked for me, and others are classics that everyone would agree are fantastic. That's what I love about Goodreads: we all get our opinion on something very personal as reading choice. If I write that a book "Should have been 5*," it means it needed editing!
These days, I read very little other than Jane Austen-inspired fiction. Once in a hundred, I'll read a Regency Romance or nonfiction reference for writing. Part of the reason for that is that my health doesn't allow me to read for more than a couple of hours a day, and I have many books in that genre to catch up on.
You won't get newsletters from me, since I hate getting that sort of stuff clogging up my email. You will get chances at freebies and swag every so often through other channels because I love giving stuff away. In fact, I have a free gift for anyone who reads this bio. Email me at suzanlauder at gmail dot com to claim it, and say where you saw the offer.
I'd love feedback of all sorts on my writing, but especially stuff that tells me what I can do to please you, as a reader. Thanks!
Biography:
Saucy opinions like "The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has no pleasure in a good novel must be intolerably stupid." won Suzan Lauder, who thought, "I have to read more by this woman who writes with such snarky humour!" And another Jane Austen fanatic was captured in the clever dead author's net. Austen figures prominently in Lauder's writing, as Pride and Prejudice has inspired all her published fiction.
Lauder's is fascinated with Regency fashion and editing and blogs about it. She lives with Mr. Suze half time on Vancouver Island and in Mexico and their cat joins them in both places.
A Favourite I use the word ‘favourite’ a lot. Maybe too much, but I have so many. The second edition of Alias Thomas Bennet, in celebration of its tenth-year anniversary, has been gently refined without changing the flavour of the story, for which I am grateful. The original version was released some years before I discovered the JAFF genre and was one of my earlier stand-out books once I discovered it. I have re-read it several times and always come back to it. I have the original audiobook version as well.
I loved this variation’s storyline. The story weaves memories of the past with the present day lives of the Bennets. There are glimpses of canon, but the story is oh so different. Without giving the mystery away for those who may not yet have read it, ironically, this is one of my ‘favourite’ portrayals of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Once you read it, you will understand.
Highly recommend.
Mature sexual content.
***
Note: I shelved this as a “marriage of convenience”, but it pertains to Fanny Bennet, not ODC. Also, the hidden identity shelf refers to Thomas Bennet in this case—again, not ODC.
Lastly, this book describes a violent assault and rape, so be warned.
Typos repaired, reviewer non-favourite scenes removed, non-Regency words replaced, adverbs and filter words reduced, flashbacks italicized for easier understanding, and a beautiful new cover. All this makes for a fantastic second edition.

This is the first book I have read by this author and found it truly enjoyable, she really had brought the story to life. The original version was released some years before I discovered the JAFF genre. For those who have read the original, just know according to the reviews that there are only a few small changes but nothing major was changed. I liked the plot and how each character's screen time was managed (although Darcy and Elizabeth's presence is all I will ever require). I loved this variation’s storyline. This story has all of the cleverness and creativity of great JAF. The personalities of “most” of the characters we know and love are maintained, even though the story is full of twists and turns that almost immediately carry the reader away.
I loved the first version, and I love this remastered version even more. A great story is made greater with the removal of a few typo's, and author's notes at the end of relevant chapters. This was a perfect way to spend my evening.
Two men tied together by the misdeeds of a peer upon the women they were to protect. One too sickly to react, the second reacted and running from the illegal duel that killed the perpetrator. Two men that bear an uncanny resemblance to the point where the captain thinks Lord Sheldon is his friend Thomas Bennet. One with a young sheltered wife the other with two young daughters. Bennet knows he’s not going to make it to Bermuda with Fanny before he dies. He proposes that he and Sheldon switch places, take up his name and position in life, and that he’s buried at sea as Sheldon. The plan works for years as the family grows to five beautiful daughters. As the older two gain suitors, it is time to reveal Jane and Elizabeth’s real identity to their suitors, Bingley and Darcy respectively. Both are shocked, but try to keep Lord Sheldon’s identity secret. All goes well for the most part until the entrance of Lady Matlock and Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Then, Wickham tries to stir up problems, but his sorry state in which he’s caught leads him with no hope of finding anyone to convince. He and Fanny continue their quest to lead a relatively peaceful life at Longbourn while his two daughters live with their loving husbands.
I'm glad I chose to reread Alias Thomas Bennet over a new piece. It did not disappoint. It's just as good the second time around. I liked the plot and how each character's screen time was managed (although Darcy and Elizabeth's presence is all I will ever require). My only gripe is Darcy, and Bennet/Shelton are too lenient with Wickham. Considering all that Wickham has done to their loved ones on multiple occasions- I must add it was disappointing to hear their handling of the situation. Wickham got his in the end, but he is always given too much freedom to cause havoc on other people's lives when that particular problem could have been nipped in the bud years ago.
The best part is how the personalities of Thomas and Fanny Bennet are portrayed. In this telling, they are sensible loving parents who came together through most unusual circumstances. Least favorite part is Elizabeth being contemptuously snarky to Darcy, attributing to him her own faults of pride and prejudice. In addition, going for a solitary stroll in the park, knowing that her would be rapist is still on the loose, is the height of foolishness for a character supposedly known for her intellect.
I absolutely love the new cover for this anniversary edition (I bought the paperback just to add it to my collection). For those who have read the original, just know that there are a few small changes but nothing major was changed. I read the book as I listened to the original audio book to see what the actual difference was. I still love this story of a stronger Mr & Mrs Bennet and what they do to protect their girls. Worth the re-read/listen.
This is more of a story about Thomas and Fanny Bennet. While there is a LOT of Darcy and Elizabeth, their interactions are fairly predictable but still highly enjoyable. The surprises and interest are generated by the interactions with Mr. Bennet and the back story that fills in who is who and what really happened. It was fantastically written. I can't say it was suspenseful but it was very enthralling. I will definitely be re-reading this one.
WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT, SEXUAL VIOLENCE, CHILD ABUSE
This is a terrible book. What a waste of my time! Please Stop Writing! What kind of mind writes of Sexual assault, asexual Violence and child abuse and considered that Entertainment?!
I an Never reading anything by Suzan Leader again!
This is the first book I have read by this author and found it truly enjoyable, she really had brought the story to life. It starts where Lord Sheldon Mr and Mrs Thomas Bennet meet on a boat to Bermuda.
This s a very unique and intriguing variation. They look so very much alike, they could have been twins.... The combined children of Fanny and the alias give us our Bennet girls. Very involved and entertaining.
