Allah subhanahu wa ta`la (exalted is He) has given Himself Names and attributes (siffat) so that we can know Him. What is most amazing and beautiful about Allah’s Names is that through them, you can see how your Creator recognizes the needs of His creation. We all need sustenance; and He is al-Razzaaq, The Provider. We all need love; and He is al-Wadud, The Most Loving. We all need protection; and Allah is al-Hafidh, The Guardian. What we need the most is the very thing of which Allah (swt) has an unlimited supply. And so sometimes we are put through things to know Allah (swt). Sometimes it is to open your eyes to your own flaws so that you can change. But whatever it is, if you realize that the answer to any problem is through Him, and that He suffices all your needs, then your relief is already at hand.
This by far is one of the best Islamic books I’ve read and it mainly focuses on self-development through the names of Allah (SWT) and developing the right characteristics to become a better Muslim as well as be of better service to people. Whether that’s speaking up about injustice (considering the circumstances and personal safety aspects), concealing others sins to attain paradise (there is a difference between sin and oppression - sin is harm you’ve committed to yourself and oppression is harm you’ve committed towards others), etc. I would say it teaches you to be a kinder, grounded and thoughtful person. You must be thinking why does she need to be taught this, is she a bad person? No, you learn new things every day, and this book essentially teaches you how to draw closer to the deen.
Not only do you learn about the names of Allah (SWT), you learn how He embodies these characteristics and we’re encouraged to embody these characteristics too, whether that’s generosity, providing, gifting, offering peace, etc.
Whatever chapter I was on somehow was so tailored to my ever-changing circumstances, thoughts and feelings as if I was supposed to read it at that very specific moment - which is why I’ll always believe that nothing is ever by chance or coincidence, wherever you are, and whatever is happening was always meant to happen. I’d really encourage everyone to read this book.
