TONY BASSETT is a former journalist who worked on regional and national newspapers in Britain for more than 40 years. He mainly reported on crime, show business, human interest and consumer topics. Now retired, he writes crime fiction.
Tony is best known for his series of novels set in the West Midlands featuring Detective Chief Inspector Gavin Roscoe, an experienced detective and family man, and his sergeant, law graduate and resourceful problem-solver Sunita Roy.
THE LATEST novel (Book 8) begins with a retired nurse escaping to her hotel room looking for peace after a rowdy birthday party in a Warwickshire town. But to her horror, through a window, she witnesses a brutal crime — a young woman being strangled in another part of the building.
Detective Sergeant Sunita Roy — visiting the hotel while attending a wedding — is first on the scene, and quickly realises this isn’t a random attack. The victim, glamorous social media star Candy Goodhope, was living a double life — and everyone close to her has something to hide.
When events take a further sinister turn, she and her boss, DCI Gavin Roscoe, are obliged to look back at past lives to find a motive for murder.
THE FIFTH book in the series, Heir To Murder, was judged first in the Mystery and Suspense (Police Procedurals) category in the American Fiction Awards in June 2024.
The other titles in the collection (all published by The Book Folks) are: Murder On Oxford Lane, The Crossbow Stalker, Murder Of A Doctor, Out for Revenge and It Never Rains.

This is the fifth book in the ‘Roy and Roscoe’ series by author Tony Bassett’s although it is my first read.

Lord Culverton’s son Miles Kenworth is murdered following a neighbourly dispute over loud music. His skull was cut to pieces with an axe. Residents had seen Jake Harris knocking down Miles’ door brandishing a bat. The case appears to be straight forward for DS Sunita Roy but there is more to this crime than first impressions.

DS Sunita Roy is not fooled by the apparent simplicity of the case and feels the need to investigate further despite Jake’s mounting evidence. Sunita uncovers secrets and motives that beckon the question was Jake just caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time or is he actually guilty after all.

Miles Kenworth was far from the ideal neighbour and was not liked by many residents which throws up other suspects. DE Sunita Roy is a very good character and her determination to uncover the truth help make this novel an addictive read, Well written, expertly paced and an interesting plot make this a very enjoyable read.

I would like to thank both Netgalley and The Book Folks for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This murder mystery was the fifth book in the Roy and Roscoe series, and I thought it looked like the type of book that I would usually enjoy.

I wouldn't say that it was a cosy exactly, but maybe with some elements of a cosy. It was, very comfortable reading, but also a page turner. The chapters were short, so I found myself reading one, then another, until I had finished the whole book. I hadn't read any of the previous books in this series, but I liked the detectives and would probably read about them again.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free copy to review.

3.5 stars rounded up

Despite not having read the previous books in this series, I'm now motivated to go back and read them. From the beginning to the very end, this is an interesting read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story has a cast of characters with their motives on why they would want to kill the victim, making one wonder, which character is the killer? The book is a blend of suspense, action, and mystery, making it a must-read for fans of the crime fiction genre.

Thank you to Rachel's Random Resources and the author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Thanks to NetGalley and The Book Folks for an advance reader copy. If you want a synopsis, click on the book.

The cover on the book states 'English detective fiction at its best'. The source of this statement is not stated so I assume it must be the publisher or the author and I have to disagree. I found the writing to be wooden. For example, a receptionist rings her boss to tell him, 'There is an officer of the law here to see you'. Inspector Clouseau might say that but a UK receptionist would not. Also, this is book 5 of Roy and Roscoe and I would have expected an affinity between the two but I didn't get that at all. Their relationship seemed entirely professional and somewhat distanced.

On the positive side, the plot was okay and it was easy to read.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Heir To Murder' by Tony Bassett.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Tony Bassett, The Book Folks and Rachel's Random Resources Tours.

Publication date 3rd December 2023

This is the second book I have read by this author. It is also the fifth book in Tony's 'Detectives Roy and Roscoe' series but can be read as a standalone. I have also read the standalone 'Seat 97' by Tony and would also highly recommend that too.

This novel consists of 55 chapters. The chapters are short to medium to long in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions and the perfect atmosphere for the storyline. The synopsis and cover work perfectly with the book cover. This book is an intriguing and thrilling crime mystery that will have readers investigating the killing of Miles Kenworth it what first appears to be an open and shut case but becomes anything but! The storyline is fast paced and will take the readers from London to Spain and back again on the hunt of a killer and possibly more victims. There are several suspects that will keep you guessing throughout and I love the fact that i never did work out who the killer/s were. I have read hundreds of crime thrillers so it is getting harder and harder to surprise me with each book I read but I never did work out who was up to what and why in this fantastic book. I also love the fact that there are several leads and different storylines going on and Tony weaves them all together perfectly. Tony takes us on a mysterious and dangerous adventure from the absolutely fantastic first chapter to the very end. It is quite a unique storyline and I enjoyed trying to work out the answers along with Sunita, Gavin and the rest of the fantastic team. Tony drip feeds the reader just the right amount of information to give them enough to try and work it out but not too much to make it too easy and ends the book with a great twist that I was not expecting. It is filled with mystery, crime, twists, suspense, action and will keep you turning the pages to find out the answers. I devoured the book in one sitting and cannot wait to start reading the previous books in this fantastic series!

Although this is the fifth book in the series I had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

The characters are all well developed, strong and realistic. I really enjoyed getting to know Detective Sergeant Sunita Roy and Detective Chief Inspector Gavin Roscoe who both had different thoughts of the case. I loved Sunita's determination to get the right suspect, intelligence, refusal to concentrate on one subject and the fact that she thinks outside of the box. Gavin on the other hand tends to have a one track mind and relies a lot on Sunita. Although they have completely different personalities I warmed to them both really quickly and I am looking forward to meeting them both again in previous and future books. there were several other characters that I enjoyed meeting and that thanks to Tony's fantastic evocative descriptions all leapt out of the pages in front of my eyes. Some of these include DC Khalid, Chief Superintendent Norris, PC Miller, DC Ling and DC Dawson and I am hoping to meet them all again. The fact that Tony has done his research on the police and police procedures completely shine through the book. It is a pet hate of mine when authors fail to put any research into the topics they are writing about as it easily spoils what could be an excellent storyline. There were several characters that I could not stand but I don't want to go into them as I would rather you read the characters for yourselves and make up your own minds about them. I already know what each have done so it would be too easy to give anything away with my thoughts and feelings on them. regardless of how I felt about them each character had a part to play and they played it perfectly. I am definitely looking forward to meeting many of them again in the next books in this fantastic series.

Overall a fast paced, crime filled page turner with an ending you wont see coming!

"Heir to Murder" is a gripping murder mystery that revolves around the suspicious death of Miles Kenworth, a neighbor known for his love of playing rock music at an unbearable volume (Don’t we all know one of those). The story takes off when Miles' body is discovered by his next-door neighbor, with Jake, a resident living upstairs, standing nearby.

While the initial suspects seem obvious, DS Sunita Roy refuses to accept the easy explanation and decides to investigate further. The residents of the apartment block have long expressed their annoyance with Miles' noisy behavior, leading many to believe that someone finally took matters into their own hands. However, as Roy delves deeper into the case, she begins to question whether Jake is truly guilty or simply an unfortunate bystander.

The author skillfully weaves a tangled web of suspense and intrigue, leading readers through a maze of possible motives and suspects. The characterization is strong, allowing readers to become emotionally invested in the flawed but relatable characters. The author navigates the complexities of relationships between neighbors, highlighting the tensions that can arise when living in close quarters.

The pacing of the novel is excellent, with each chapter revealing new clues and building the tension. The plot twists and turns, keeping readers engaged and eager to unravel the truth behind Miles' murder. The author's attention to detail in describing the crime scene and the investigation adds authenticity and depth to the story.

In conclusion, "Heir to Murder" is a captivating murder mystery that keeps readers guessing until the very end. With its well-crafted plot, compelling characters, and exploration of relatable themes, this novel is a must-read for fans of the genre.

Loud music is blaring and one neighbour can't stand it any longer. He storms round to Miles' flat and breaks downs the door before smashing the sound system. But then he finds Miles' body on the floor and becomes the prime suspect in the initial murder investigation. DCI Roscoe and his team
Heir To Murder is the 5th book to feature DCI Gavin Roscoe and his team. I have previously read and reviewed books 1 and 4 from the series: Murder on Oxford Lane and Out For Revenge.
At first glance, the murder case looks straightforward. An unplanned attack by a neighbour driven to the edge by relentless loud music. Digging a little deeper, DCI Roscoe finds out that the victim is from a privileged family but has become estranged. The case meanders through false alibis, blackmail, affairs, and another murders.
Roscoe is preparing for his son's wedding but this new case requires all his attention. I enjoyed his stable home life and the lack of typical dysfunctional relationships and behaviours that are usually common among police characters. DS Sunita Roy's character continues to shine. She has good intuition and this leads her to make a number of surprising discoveries that help solve the case. Meanwhile in her private life, her boyfriend is trying to persuade her to invest some money and I was surprised she was not more suspicious!
I think this series goes from strength to strength. The writing style is easy to read and the detective characters are easy to like so I felt invested in wanting them to succeed in catching the killer. There are plenty of twists and I had no idea which way the plot was heading or who was responsible for the crimes.
Heir To Murder is an entertaining police procedural with strong lead detectives.

A neighbourly dispute over loud music results in trouble. And murder. The noise-maker, Miles Kenworth, son of Lord Culverton, has had his skull mutilated by an axe. Residents had seen Jake Harris knocking down his door brandishing a bat.
The tales features detective DS Sunita Roy, whom we know from previous novels in the series.
Charles Laxton, Rupert Faulkner and Miles’ ex-girlfriend Ursula Grey enter the investigation. Stephanie has photos of someone in a compromising position in a hay barn, and her sister Bella tries to dissuade her from using them for blackmail. Laxton hasn’t told the truth. Logan Price has a motive. The list of suspects reaches seven. The murders multiply, and one two years earlier on the Costa del Sol may be linked, so DS Sunita Roy and Brett Dawson jet off to follow the lead. Sunita follows her instincts, and it pays off.
The investigation builds gradually, and we experience some setbacks, building suspense for the climax.
In Bassett’s detective novels, the plot builds right along with the police investigation. We see peeks inside the suspects’ private lives, as we are fed the detectives’ leads. This makes for good pacing and good suspense. I like how realistic the cops are. There’s a team of them, of mixed genders and ethnicities, as in real life, each with individual roles and talents, and their dialogue is natural with enough banter to make it fun. When the plot becomes complicated, there is always a helpful summing up—either a team meeting or Sunita mulling things over at bedtime.
A perfect detective thriller. I was given an ARC by the author.

DCI Gavin Roscoe and DS Sunita Roy from the Heart of England CID attend a strange murder scene at a block of flats where one resident, Miles Kenworth, has been annoying his neighbours, playing loud rock music late into the night. Jake Harris from upstairs has had enough and charges downstairs armed with a cricket bat, but after breaking down the door, finds Miles dead behind the sofa with an axe lodged in his head. Another neighbour calls the police and while Jake initially looks like a good suspect, Roscoe and Roy both doubt he was the killer. Further investigation reveals Miles to be the estranged son of a local wealthy lord and generally had no enemies apart from the family of the fiancée he recently dumped. Together with DCs Omar Khalid, Wendy Hopkirk and Brett Dawson, they start to identify a handful of suspects, all people with links to either the victim or the murder weapon, but just which one of them hated this seemingly laid back and generally well-liked man enough to murder him? And what else will they do to evade capture?
This is a well told police procedural in an enjoyable series with a set of varied and very likeable detectives who have happy home lives and who all work well together. The story takes them around an area I live near and know well, and also has some engrossing side plots with a few folks up to no good. Combining some more cosy elements which gives the detectives a little more leeway in how they act at times, the author delivers a great twisty tale with an exciting ending.

This is a twisty whodunit detective fiction book that had me second guessing myself throughout. The two main characters DS Sunita Roy and DCI Gavin Roscoe from the Heart of England Police, find themselves investigating the very bloody and mysterious murder of Miles Kenworth a man that loved playing extremely loud rock music late at night, which of course upsets his many neighbours, including Jake Harris who decides, in a fit of rage, that enough is enough, grabbing a baseball bat he intends to confront Miles, but what happens next makes him the main suspect to the horrific murder of the youngest son of Lord Culverdon. Could this be a coincidence or is it the family curse come true, as it is also discovered that Lord Culverdon’s eldest son has been missing and is presumed dead for the past two years!

DS Sunita Roy doesn’t believe in coincidences and is convinced there is more to this murder than just the obvious, so sets out to find the truth. Great storyline, great characters, and it’s really nice to see a woman police officer getting credit for her perseverance and great intuition. To me this book is a cross between the “Detective Cross” series of books by James Patterson and the “Detective Webb Murder Mysteries” by Anthea Fraser. Fortunately, this is not the only book with DS Sunita Roy and DCI Gavin Roscoe, check out “Murder on Oxford Lane”, “The Crossbow Stalker”, “Murder of a Doctor”, and “Out for Revenge” also by Tony Bassett and available on Amazon.

A story that if you like meticulous police procedures, painstaking detection work will keep you enthralled and entertained.

We have an aristocratic family living in a Hall complete with the requisite Lord, but dogged by tragedy. The elder son went missing in Spain years ago and now the youngest son, estranged from the family, living almost incognito as a sound technician, is found brutally murdered. The suspects are obvious to many, except to D S Sunita Roy who doesn’t take the easiest path and likes to dig deeper, not always supported by her colleagues or superiors.

Many suspects later, an overseas enquiry concluded with a surprising outcome the murder enquiry was concluded and the correct people were behind bars.

Lots to keep the reader locked in, this was a really good read. I’ll be looking out for the other books by this author. I also liked how at the end of some chapters the writer had an interesting tidbit of information, totally unexpected.

I love me a good murder mystery!

This is my first book by Tony and I have to say it was a good one! I love to indulge in a good murder mystery and this one kept me intrigued through out the whole read. This is a fast paced novel that will keep you gripped! a murder has occurred and even though the dead is widely disliked and there's one person standing next to the corpse, Jake is proclaiming its not him. The author really keeps you on your toes with the many moving parts in this mystery. I was trying to guess who had done it from the first couple of chapters only to come out completely wrong.

To me this read like a cosy mystery, there was amazing tension and twists and turns that keeps you wanting to read on but its not too dark or gruesome that it leans towards thriller. The author has a unique and interesting writing style that has me wanting to go back and read more of his mystery books, I would definitely recommend this to all my crime mystery book lovers out there.

“Heir to Murder” is book five in Tony Bassett’s ‘Detective’s Roy and Roscoe’ series set in the West Midlands. Having read book four I was interested in reading this one but it can be easily read as a stand-alone too.

I felt this story read like a traditional ‘whodunnit’ - cosy but with guts (brain guts to be exact) and with characters of the murdered victim’s family typical of nobility, this gave the investigation a few swerve balls and red herrings. DS Sunita Roy used her usual determined mindset, refusing to let her suspicions go and it was when she travelled to Spain in a connected thread to the murder, that we saw her real detecting skills come in play. This was the best part of the investigation for me and I enjoyed the contrast to the policing back home.

With a mixture of cosy dialogue and setting, brutal murders, interesting characters and a dogged detective, “Heir to Murder” is a classic English police procedural and I’d be keen to continue reading this series.

“Well, he’s got a very strong motive, surely.’

Heir To Murder by Tony Bassett is a fast-paced classic murder mystery. The author wrote a great plot to keep you guessing who has the motive to kill the victim! Detective Sunita Roy did not disappoint, as she is as thorough, inquisitive, witty and has a sharp mind. I enjoyed every page as it kept me engaged in every twist and turns presented by the author. I am quite happy how they were able to travel to Malaga as part of their investigation because I was able to be in Spain through their eyes, which made me want to explore Spain too. The author has mastered the art of keeping the readers in suspense and also immersing the readers in every part of the story.

“HEIR TO MURDER” is the fifth book in the Detectives Roy and Roscoe crime fiction series written by Tony Bassett. On this occasion, author Bassett introduces us to Miles Kenworth, a man who is found murdered in his house and the suspect is his neighbor. The peculiarity of this case is that Miles liked to play the drums at full volume and his neighbors are tired of this. After asking him to stop playing several times, Miles appears dead in his apartment.
One of the highlights of this reading is that the author makes the reader enjoy the book from beginning to end, keeping us on the edge of our seat at all times. What happens is not obvious at all and I think that is the most interesting thing.

This is Book Five in the 'Detectives Roy and Roscoe Crime Fiction Series'. When Miles Kenworth plays his rock music everyone knows about it, especially those that live in the same apartment block. The day Miles is found dead, Jake the neighbour that lives upstairs to his is found standing over the body. Is it really going to be that simple.... DCI Gavin Rosco and DS Sunita Roy have been assigned to the case to find out what has happened. Even though everything is pointing to Jake, DC Roy thinks differently. Once Roy and Rosco starts to dig deeper things start to get more interesting, along with some unexpecting twists and turns. The plot was interesting along with the characters. I found it an easy read that keeps you reading to the end.

I thought this book was a breath of fresh air after reading so many USA written based mysteries! I loved reading about the British Police and also finding out what happened with Miles and who killed him. And then to have a second murder in the book was brilliant as most readers like myself, want to have more mystery added to the book.
I found both the cases of Miles and Stephanie to be well written and also, I enjoyed the writing style of the author. I found this mystery to leave you guessing till the very end! As a reader we found out what happened to both Miles and Stephanie at the end of the book and I was so surprised at who did it!
This book is a definite must for any murder mystery reader!

DCI Gavin Roscoe has to investigate the gruesome axe murder of the estranged son of an aristocratic family. All the evidence points to a neighbour and it seems cut and dried, but DS Sunita Roy has her doubts and delves further. She believes there may be a link with the victim's brother, missing in a mountain accident, and this sends her on a chase around the the midlands and abroad.

This is a fast-paced thriller with a long list of suspects and everyone appearing to have something to hide. The persistence of DS Roy reveals several twists which, combined with DC Dawson's diligence, leads, amongst other things, to the solution to a crime committed years ago.

Heir to Murder is a gripping detective novel and police procedural that kept me guessing who the real murderer was to the very end. When the world’s most annoying neighbour, Miles Kenworth, turns up dead, a neighbor who is found on the scene becomes the obvious suspect. But, of course, nothing is as it seems and detectives Roy and Roscoe fortunately decide to investigate more closely. I enjoyed the many twists and turns in the plot and the intriguing details that kept me wondering how the novel would end. If you like this book, then the good news is there are several more in the series to enjoy. They can all be read as standalone mysteries.

"Heir to Murder" stands out as a fascinating part of the Roy and Roscoe detective series, providing a clever plot that has kept me glued to the pages. The character construction is impressive, as the author manages to endow his protagonists, like DS Sunita Roy and Jake, with a complexity that goes beyond the traditional labels of "guilty" or "innocent."
The story not only meets the expectations of a good crime mystery, but also offers a thought-provoking literary experience. I have really been delighted with this book, with its plot and outcome and with its characters. I recommend it, both for leisure moments and for reflective reading.

Murder mystery

Miles isn't a nice neighbor, always blasting his music at all hours. Well the neighbors have had enough and one takes his bat to confront Miles while another calls the police. What follows is a who done it story, of who is telling the truth, who finally snapped out of anger and frustration and offed the young man. Detective Roy thinks that the obvious choice of perpetrators isn't quite right and begins to dig deeper into this apartment uilding. What she uncovers is interesting, a little disturbing, and certainly unexpected. A really good murder mystery, full of police procedure and competent detectives leading the charge.
