She can hear the faint lapping of waves nearby as she tries to open her swollen blue eyes. But all she can see is darkness, there is nothing but the suffocating sand that surrounds her. As her consciousness fades, she wishes she had never trusted him…

When Ruby Evans is abducted on her way home from volunteering at a nursing home in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, Detective Casey White’s heart breaks for the inconsolable mother. Terrible memories flood back of when her own darling daughter was taken twenty years ago. Pushing her own pain aside, Casey vows to find Ruby and bring her home.

After desperately searching the road where Ruby was last seen, Casey receives a letter from someone claiming to be the kidnapper. In cursive red letters, she is warned that she has less than twenty-four hours to find Ruby alive. And when forensics reveal the letter was written in blood, Casey knows this isn’t a hoax.

Working around the clock, Casey is devastated when her team hit another dead end, and she’s shattered when Ruby’s body is discovered buried on the beach—she’s too late.

Now looking for a twisted killer, Casey is shocked when she receives a call from an evil predator she put behind bars ten years ago. He says he knows who the killer is, and will help Casey in exchange for his freedom. Casey refuses, but when she receives another letter, she is forced to reconsider. Because the killer promises the next victim will be someone much closer to her, and the clock is ticking.

With only hours left, Casey has to decide if she’s prepared to free one evil monster to catch another, and if she doesn’t, will her loved ones pay the ultimate price?

It’s always hard to write something new or original when you are reviewing a novel in one of your favorite series because the strong points are those that make you read another instalment.
There’s always something very original in this series, Casey and Jericho are a strong and well matched couple, and the setting is fascinating.
This is fast paced, twisty and dark. There’s a sort very dark villain, almost a Casey’s Moriarty. There’s murders, someone who’s communicating via bottles and could endanger Casey’s family.
Not a cosy or relaxing read but an adrenaline fuelled and fast paced.
I enjoyed it and I can’t wait to read the next one. This one was a fast and entertaining read
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Bookouture for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This was a brilliantly written crime thriller and I enjoyed it from start to finish. It is book 11 in a series so obviously I'm now going to have to read the first ten books as I felt like there was some backstory I was missing, however, at no point was it confusing so it can definitely be read as a standalone. I look forward to reading the series from the start and seeing more from this author.

Detective Casey White has a witness to the kidnapping of a teenager named Ruby Fields. There is an Amber Alert issued. As not only is Tracy Fields part of Casey's team, she is Casey's child, who was kidnapped while she was a only a few years old, she feels a connection to the missing teenager. Even though Casey looked for Tracy for years, it still gives Casey chills that she gets to work alongside Tracy, who is now a crime scene investigator. This past between them makes Ruby's case even more sensitive to Casey.

When a literal message in a bottle is delivered stating that there will indeed be a murder victim, likely Ruby Fields, it becomes a race against time. Can Casey and her team find the killer before he sets his sights on yet another innocent victim? There is more than needing to be answered. Casey knows that there must be a special meaning in that message.

With regard to Casey's personal life, she is in a wonderful relationship with Jericho Flynn, who works for the Marine Control. The couple now have two foster children they had saved and there is an adoption hearing pending.

What an amazing series by B.R. Spangler. This is one series that might be best read in order as Casey's life over the years has changed. When considering her relationship with Tracey, Jericho, their two foster children and her team, the continuity does a fine job creating a wonderful backdrop for a thoroughly engaging series.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

If you are a fan of detective TV shows, this book is right up your alley. It reminded me of episodes of Law and Order: SVU. You get right into the problem, they investigate their leads, a couple dead ends, some side plots that extend beyond this one book (since it is part of a series), and a conclusion but with some overarching questions still to be figured out.
The writing was not my favorite style (it was a little to the point without much elaboration), but that didn’t take away from the well thoughout plot. I enjoyed the characters and their relationships. There was lots that I didn’t know that came out of the first 10 books, but the author filled those gaps in well. The overarching plot of adoption I felt was out of place, but if you take it like an episode of a TV show than it makes sense you would have these bigger plots that span the whole season (or all of the books).
I will say that I believe I have tarnished myself with reading books by Ruth Ware and Mary Cubic, because I expect big reveals and giant plot twists. This was a solid read that I would recommend to detective/crime fans looking for a quick weekend read.

Her Last Hour will grip you from the beginning and not let go until the thrilling end. Her Last Hour is book 11 in the Detective Casey White series by B.R. Spangler. This is the first book I've read in the series and I'm so glad I did! This series is incredible and I can't wait for the next book to drop!. Ruby Evans is a seventeen year old high school student who is on her way home after volunteering at a nursing home for people with dementia. Her grandmother is a patient there and she feels compelled to give as much of her time as possible to these patients. As Ruby is driving home, there are bright headlights in her rearview mirror. She can't wait to get home after the long day. All of a sudden she sees blue lights flashing behind her and she pulls over. Ruby had swerved as she lost focus a little bit ago. Maybe that's why the cop was pulling her over.

As the policeman came to her window, Ruby put her window down, and was blinded as a flashlight was pointed in her face. She asked the policeman to lower it, but he said it was for his safety. She handed him her license and registration and asked why she swerved back there? She said she was thinking about something and it won't happen again. She told the policeman she was coming from the nursing home after volunteering there this evening. When he comes back, he says he smells alcohol. Ruby tells him it's because of the hand sanitizer she has to use multiple times each shift. He tells her to get out of the car. Ruby doesn't understand. She's clearly not drunk and is coming from the nursing home. She does what he asks and walks with him to his car. She asks to call her mom, but he says she can call from the station. A car is coming. It's one of Ruby's high school classmates and she waves at him. As she looks inside the car, she notices that this isn't a police car at all. What's going on? It's too late as he hits her on the back of her head and pushes her in the back seat, wrapping her wrists and ankles with duct tape.

The classmate sees Ruby and notices that the man is trying to get her into his car. He knows it's not a police car, but he thinks Ruby thinks that it is. He goes up and turns around. When he gets back, the car is gone, Ruby is gone, and her car is left on the side of the road. He calls his Dad and tells him what happened. They go to the police and the search for Ruby begins. Ruby's mother is distraught and terrified. She lost her husband a year ago and Ruby is all she has. Detective Casey White starts with the classmate and what he remembers, then goes to where Ruby's car was left. As the investigation continues, a message in a bottle is dropped off at the station. It was found on the beach and it had Casey's name on it. The letter claims to be from the kidnapper and he says that Casey has 24 hours to find Ruby before it's too late.

There's not many clues to go on and the worst happens. A beach cleaner finds Ruby's body partially buried in the sand. He almost ran over her. She was semi-conscious when he found her. She said it wasn't police and said birds. Then she was gone. Casey doesn't know what to make of what she said about birds. The killer did brutal things to Ruby and Casey knows she has to catch this guy before he does it again. A phone call comes in to the station from a child predator that Casey put behind bars. He's calling from prison and says he has information relating to Ruby. He offers to give Casey the name of the killer in exchange for his freedom. Casey gets another message in a bottle and this time the killer is threatening to kill again, only this time he's threatening someone close to Casey.

Will Casey change her mind and free "The Doctor" from prison to get the killer's name? When someone close to Casey is taken, will they find her in time? Will Casey's family be safe? Will Casey and Jericho be able to finally adopt the 2 kids they took in after their parents were killed? This book has everything and will have you wanting more at the end! I'm so glad I found this series and can't wait to read book 12! I rate Her Last Hour 5 stars with my very highest recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Her Last Hour in exchange for a fair review. #HerLastHour

This book was my introduction to the Detective Casey White series. Although this is book 11 in the series, I think this one is fine as a stand-alone. As I was reading, it didn’t feel like I’d missed anything, nor did I need any additional context.

In terms of the writing, I must admit I struggled with this one. It was a slow burner, which felt wordy and difficult to follow at times. That being said, I feel like this is a personal preference issue, as the crime novels I lean towards are usually much more fast-paced which I find makes them easier to read.

The chapters switch between perspectives of the detectives, the victims and the killer, and it was easy to grasp the flow and familiarise yourself with who each person was.

In terms of the story, the premise was great and the description really caught my eye. The beginning chapters were also very captivating, as poor Ruby was taken, and I felt like the book had so much potential. Despite this, I think it was the investigation side that fell short for me and wasn’t as suspenseful as I would’ve expected. I felt we didn’t learn enough about the victims, and also expected more about the main antagonist, as he played such a pivotal role in the story yet was barely mentioned.

If I’m honest, it felt like there was a lot of effort put in to setting up the next book, but by doing that, it felt like this one was missing crucial information that would’ve made the story so much better.

If you’re already a fan of the series and writing style, I’m sure you’ll still enjoy this one

I’m giving it a 3.25 😊

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced reader copy.

Casey has been through a lot already in her personal life and she has had to deal with a lot of vicious killers she had to chase and was able to put behind bars. Case closed, right? Well, for most ot them yes, but there are always exceptions to the rule...

Casey has a lot of balls in the air. She has a race against the clock in her professional life, because every minute counts as per usual and she has an important event to deal with in her personal life. I love the way her team works together and I was touched by the support they gave her when she needed it the most.

The author creates the best stories around his main character detective Casey White. They are creepy, suspenseful and contain a high level of emotions that will break your heart on the one hand, but warm it on the other hand.

The killer is a first class and cruel manipulator and although they are the worst, the best stories revolve around them. I am looking forward to the next installment in this incredible series. 5 stars

Her Last Hour
3.5⭐️

This is Book #11 of the Detective Casey White series -my first and only book I’ve read of the series. There were topics brought up from previous books, but the reader was quickly brought up to speed.

The book opens with the abduction of a 17-year-old and Detective White is on the case. The kidnapper is aware of exactly who is in charge of the case and sends a message in a bottle addressed to Detective White directly. The message is presented as a game to see if the detective can save the girl before her demise. At the same time, a case from her past is haunting her as the criminal seeks parole.

This had the feel of a detective crime show. Fairly quick read full of well timed drama and a slight cliffhanger at the end for the books to follow in the series. I enjoyed reading Her Last Hour and may eventually go back and read the earlier books in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley, B.R. Spangler, and Bookouture for providing this ARC. This review is being shared on NetGalley and Goodreads.

I enjoyed this one, but after a certain point, I did start thinking the doctor was behind it. I figured that he would show his face to Casey eventually, but I was not expecting it to be at the court date to finalize Thomas and Tabitha's adoption. Speaking of which, the agents pretty much forcing Jericho to quit his job pissed me off. I got a little teary eyes when Tracy said she just realized that she has a little brother and sister.

Terrible memories flood back of when her own darling daughter was taken twenty years ago. Pushing her own pain aside, Casey vows to find Ruby and bring her home.

These books are addictive, and Her Last Hour is a great addition to the series. I really like the main character, Casey. She is smart, empathetic, and determined to find justice for victims.

The author has an effortless writing style that keeps the reader engaged and rooting for the good guys while also keeping you guessing who could be the culprit.

There were a few slow parts in the book, and I really wish we knew more about Tracy and what happened to her 20 years ago.

Overall, a good crime thriller with a satisfying ending.

Her Last Hour is the 11th in the Detective Casey White series, by B.R. Spangler. It can be read as a standalone, with enough background story provided. But if this is your first dip into the series, you will enjoy going back and reading from the inception.

Casey’s latest case is somewhat different in that the killer appears to be sending her a message through both his actions as a killer and literally, in bottles. Intertwined within the case details, we also learn that Casey and her partner Jericho are moving towards adopting two children they had previously rescued.

As always, Spangler’s descriptive narrative really puts the reader in the scene. And I always enjoy the character development of Casey, Jericho and the crew. The ending of the novel is somewhat of a cliffhanger - can’t wait for the next installment!

Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this digital ARC.

Holy Cannoli! This was one crazy ride. I’m so ready for the next book and scared, very scared.

From the first page this was fast and furious. And to be honest not at all what I expected. So many twists…wow. I am such a big fan of this series and this was really a page turner.

I’m thrilled for Casey & Jericho and this new development but I am waiting like Casey for that shoe to drop. I need next book…now.

This was my first Casey White story and probably my last. There was just something I didn't like, maybe the characters or is it the writing style? Not sure.

Even though it was book #11 you get the required background to understand the characters so I never felt that I missed something.

Actually now after thinking what to write here I think it was the writing style I didn't like. I felt many times like zoning out.. it made it hard to stay concentrated what to read.

Thankyou Netgalley for providing me the ARC.

B.R. Spangler (https://brspangler.com) is the author of more than 20 novels. Her Last Hour is the 11th book in his Detective Casey White series and it was released a few days ago. It is the 21st book I completed reading in 2024.

I received an ARC of this book through https://www.netgalley.com with the expectation of a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own! Due to scenes of violence, I categorize this novel as R.

Casey White is a Detective in the Barrier Islands of North Carolina. She encounters locals trying to report a disappearance one morning when she arrives at her office. Ruby Evans, 17, had been stopped on a deserted section of highway by a police car. Only now, it looks more like she was stopped by someone masquerading as a policeman. White can relate to the trauma Ruby’s mother is going through. Her own 3-year-old daughter had been kidnapped in front of her eyes twenty years earlier.

A message in a bottle is found on the beach. It is from the kidnapper and it is addressed to White. She is being taunted, and the note says Ruby has less than 24 hours. White and the police department scramble to find Ruby, but their efforts are to no avail. Ruby is found on the beach and dies soon afterward. Another message arrives for White that implies someone close to the investigation will be the next victim. When one of her team goes missing, they all fear the worst.

While this is going on White attends the parole hearing for Dr. Boécemo at a nearby prison. She had helped to put him away for child abuse. Much to the Boécemo’s agitation, White convinces the parole board to deny the his parole request. Not long afterwards, White receives a call from the Dr. Even though he has been in prison for several years, he claims to have information about Rudy’s kidnapper. Boécemo wants White to speak on his behalf at the next parole hearing. In exchange, he will share what he knows.

White and fiancé Jericho Flynn have been foster parents to Thomas and Tabitha since the couple rescued the kids. Now, they are attempting to adopt them. Both White and Flynn work in law enforcement. Dangerous jobs that take them away from home. The two fear that their request for adoption may be declined.

Operating on little sleep, little food, and pressure from all sides, While must do her best to find the kidnapper. She is torn by the thought of contributing to the release of a man she considers a monster, even though that might lead to the rescue of her teammate. The fear of their adoption petition being turned down, and even worse, the possibility of the children being taken from their foster care, weighs heavily on her mind.

I enjoyed the 6.5 hours I spent reading this 276-page mystery. This was a short novel. It could have easily been stretched out to a longer read. I like the chosen cover art, but it does not relate to the plot. I give this novel a rating of 3.8 (rounded to 4) out of 5.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Last Hour, the eleventh novel to feature Detective Casey White of the North Banks Police Department.

Ruby Evans is abducted on her way home from work. Casey and her team find her car, but no clues. Then she gets a letter written in blood that tells her she has less than twenty four hours to find Ruby. She is devastated to find Ruby dead and not happy when a predator she put away is prepared to offer a name in return for his freedom or else someone close to her will be next.

I enjoyed Her Last Hour, which is a plot driven procedural with some good twists. It is mostly told Casey’s point of view with the occasional chapter from the unnamed killer. I like this approach as it offers an immersive read and the opportunity to guess alongside her. It is, however, more a game of guessing the twists and the meaning behind the two letters she receives as there isn’t much in the way of suspects.

The plot moves quickly with Ruby’s death and Casey spending more time than she wants to with a game playing psychopathic predator and before the reader knows it, the endgame has started. In a way it is a fairly perfunctory novel with one thing leading to another, but the upside to this is continual forward momentum. There isn’t anything novel in the plot, but the author puts her own spin on events and produces an entertaining read.

Casey is still navigating her relationship with her recently found long lost daughter. This thread was played out over countless novels in the series, so it is a relief to see it entering a new phase of acceptance and playing a less prominent role. Instead, Casey and Jericho, her fiancé, are trying to adopt two children they rescued and fostered. Needless to say it is not going smoothly for reasons I found frankly ludicrous.

Her Last Hour is a good read that I can recommend.

This was a chilling read that will stay with you long after you close the book. The creep factor is off the charts.

Detective Casey White is pulled into the investigation of a missing teenage girl, Ruby. Anytime Casey is involved in a kidnapping case, it brings all the bad memories from her daughter's kidnapping back to the forefront of her mind. Her car is found abandoned on the side of the road. Later that day the killer sends a message to Casey written in blood and in the form of a riddle foretelling of a murder. Time is not their friend in their search for Ruby. When Ruby's body turns up later that day, Casey is distraught because she could not save Ruby, but she also feels that this killer is not finished.

While investigating this crime, she is also in the process of making sure another vermin is not released from prison early. The good doctor says he has been reformed, but Casey knows better. Casey and her team have their hands full in trying to arrest one killer and keep another one behind the prison walls.

This series is one of my favorites. I really like the characters. I also like that the characters are humanized. We get to see inside not only their lives in law enforcement, but their personal lives. This makes me feel like I know the characters personally, and as such, I am invested in the story. This particular story was disturbing, especially the manner in which this demented individual traps his prey. The manner of death is even more chilling. This is not a good one to read right before bedtime, for more than one reason. One is the creep factor, but the other is that sleep will be impossible because you will feel compelled to finish it. This dark and creepy mystery will leave you with chills, and the ending will stand your hair on end.

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I've been a fan of this author from the start of his Casey White series and Her Last Hour did not disappoint.

When a young girl is abducted on her way home from volunteering, Casey and her team investigate. And a character from Casey's past returns and she really needs her wits about her in her dealings with them.

I've always liked Casey, she is feisty, determined, loyal and fights for justice. Her character has developed beautifully from the first book and I really enjoy the snippets into her home and personal life. I think B. R. Spangler's writing is very good and always draws me in from beginning to end. His descriptions of his characters, their thoughts, emotions and feelings stand out, making them jump out of the pages and I can picture them vividly in my mind. This is a multi layered story with a very good plot line that went off in ways I didn't expect, which added to my enjoyment when reading. I loved the epilogue, it gave the story perfect closure, and as a thread remains open, I am very much looking forward to the next book to see if it is addressed and where it goes. A great, fast paced thrilling read which has everything I like and is full of tension, thrills and suspense. I'd recommend this although if this author is new to you I think you're best reading the books in order to know the characters from the beginning.

Detective Casey White is back in a cracker of a story! That sees a killer play a ruthless game with Casey.

As kind, caring, volunteer Ruby Evans has been kidnapped and her mother is distraught. And the memories for Casey and her own daughters kidnapping come flooding back. But they also make her determined to bring Ruby home safely.

Yet, Casey doesn't count on this devious killer.

Who sends her a letter warning her she only has twenty-four hours to find Ruby.

And to make matters worse....

The letter is written in blood and as time runs out Casey and her team are eventually faced with a body. And a call from another devious predator already serving time behind bars.

But that's only the start as another letter soon arrives and threats against those closest to her are made.

Which is something Casey can't live with. But neither is the alternative letting a dangerous predator go free.

Only she soon realises she may not have any choice.

And with twists and turns, danger and suspense. This was another fantastic addition to the series, and I would happily recommend it to all.

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy of Her Last Hour. 😊

This is my first read by the author and i understand this book is the 11th installation in the series featuring Detective Casey White.
There were frequent glimpses into events that had occurred in the past but they were not too distracting and it is perfectly fine to read this book as a standalone as well.
The characters were somehow created in multiple shades and it lent a great authenticity to the whole human emotions and experiences. I liked how even the protagonist, Detective White made mistakes such as overlooking the possibility of Sherry fitting the killer's clue and only focusing on her protecting her daughter Tracy.
The crime in the story involving Ruby was gory without too much details thrown in. It was a tragic tale.
The villain and his motivations felt a little convoluted but then again it was just me.
I liked how the storylines involving the main characters are kept open as they will be continued to explored in further books but as for the main villain, his arc was left unfinished, which was a little unsatisfactory- again something that will be brought up in further books i suppose.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this arc.

A young girl gets kidnapped on her way home from a volunteering job. Detective Casey White is called in to investigate, but she is unfortunately too late. Ruby's remains have been found on a beach. She was killed in a cruel and brutal fashion.
However, someone that Casey put in prison a decade ago, calls her and claims to know who the killer is. He will tell her who the killer is, but his terms are far too high for Casey's liking.

I have read a few of the Detective Casey White series, unfortunately not from the beginning, but have thoroughly enjoyed the series so far.
I like the way that Casey's personal life features in the book, and I think that Jericho is a great match for her. Casey obviously has a lot of heartache in her past, but is moving forward.
Casey is dedicated to her job, and with her daughter, Tracy, on her team, manages to solve cryptic clues.

I do recommend this book to those who love a female lead in a Police Procedural, and who love trying to solve the case before the end. I failed dismally.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book.

Book 11 in the brilliant Detective Casey White series.

As with the previous books I was hooked from the first page. I flew through this book in 2 sittings as I had to know what happened. Great book that i wont hesitate to recommend.

And then another message is found.

Her Last Hour begins with the kidnapping and horrific murder of a seventeen year old girl. As Casey White and her team begin to investigate the kidnapping of Ruby Evans, they receive a message in a bottle alluding to the killing. Then they find the body and, within hours, another bottle. This time a member of her team is targeted. Casey ties the deaths to an old case of hers where she had testified against the parole of the doctor, convicted of heinous crimes, to keep him in prison. Casey is desperate to find a link to the murderer before he can act again. Adding to the stress of this case, Casey and her partner Jericho are waiting for a court hearing to finalize the adoption of their three year old twins. Some loose ends to this mystery hint at what will come next for Casey White.

This series, by the talented B.L. Spangler, just keeps getting better, Casey, Jericho and Tracey are familiar friend and the Outer Banks atmosphere is a character itself. I can wait for what comes next. 5 stars.

Yank you to Net Galley, Bookouture and B.L. Spangler for this ARC.

The case of the book was intense and personal for detective Casey White. I love that this one had updates on the children Casey and Jericho are working to adopt.

The way this unfolded reminded me a little of a crime show. There were chapters about Casey and her team, the victim and the bad guy. An old nemesis that Casey put in jail also presents a problem for her. There was a no-nonsense approach to a missing girl. I thought the bad guy leaving messages in a bottle was a unique communication method and the odds intensified once there was a second missing girl.

I really like Casey. She’s tough, courageous and relatable. She’s good at her job and works tirelessly to get justice.

I’m also a fan of the author’s writing style. It makes the book so easy to read. This is book 11 in the series, but it is easily read as a stand along as the necessary plot points needed from previous books are filled in by the author.

I’m such a fan of Casey, her team and her family. It’s a great read for anyone that’s a fan of detective novels.

The book is a grasping wrongdoing spine thriller that has been profoundly evaluated by perusers, with a typical rating of 4.30.

The story rotates around the kidnapping of Ruby Evans, which triggers excruciating recollections for Investigator Casey White, who had her own girl required a long time back . The story is extraordinary and individual for Casey, who gets a chilling letter from the ruffian, written in blood, giving her under 24 hours to see as Ruby alive . The disclosure of Ruby's body on the ocean front is an overwhelming blow, and the quest for the contorted executioner turns out to be much more critical when Casey gets a call from a hunter she put in the slammer a decade prior.

Spangler's composing style is lauded for making the book simple to peruse . The case unfurls like a wrongdoing show, with sections about Casey and her group, the person in question, and the trouble maker . The creator makes a momentous showing adjusting the wrongdoing and examination with the homegrown components, making the two sides of the story similarly convincing and energizing.

This is only the 4th book in the series I have read and I wish I had started this series at the very beginning, if I am honest, but nevertheless you CAN pick it up and read it as a standalone. It just gives you the extra layers and more depth if you read them in order.

Ruby is pulled over by a police officer on her way home from work. Only, it isn't a genuine police officer and she is in a world of trouble. The whole scenario made me shiver and I just wanted to reach into the book and help this girl!

I think this novel is a well-written. Casey and Jericho are a strong couple who both have demanding jobs and they are fostering a little brother and sister. Not easy when they do what they do, though. So, as well as trying to find Ruby, Casey has responsibilities at home which weigh on her mind.

Fast paced, thrilling and a bit of a thinker.

I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series and I wish I hadn't been so late to the party!

4.5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

Continual Innovation Compels Series Further. This is the first book in this series in a while to have some real innovation both in how the crime happens and in the domestic side of the police procedural format, and both the book at hand and overall series are that much stronger for it. This is one of those tales that tells a complete tale... and yet you're going to be clamoring for the next book immediately, though in a very different way that prior books, including Their Resting Place earlier in this series. Truly one of the more horrific crimes of a series that has had some particularly innovative and horrifying crimes, nearly on a level that would make even Aloysius Pendergast gasp. And yet as always Spangler does a remarkable job balancing the crime and investigation with the domestic elements, and here makes both sides of the story equally compelling and exciting.

Overall yet another strong entrant in a strong series. Very much recommended.

I have done all the books in this series and have enjoyed all of them. I love that each book references some of the previous books and that you don’t have to have read all the others to pick one up and read it. Casey White is a unique character. While I do enjoy following along while she solves a case, the way she pouts about her daughter Tracy has gotten old. I feel like it’s time to move on. That’s my biggest issue is every book has her pouting about her daughter and how their bond isn’t how she wants it. This story was interesting. I am curious is they will ever 100% find out if the doctor is dead or alive. I look forward to the next book to see if he is mentioned. I’m really happy the adoption happened and that they get to start their family! Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Chilling and compellingly Horrifying.
Ruby Evans is kidnapped, and Det Casey White is on the case.
In a race to find her, Casey is pulled into a past case and a jailed phycologist who
apparently has information to trade with her for a parole recommendation.
The story is very addictive but equally gross at times in descriptions of victims.
Casey is a continuing crime solver and has a very winning. type of personality about her but her
easy capitulation to criminal requests was an anomaly to me and hard to understand.
Her dogged pursuit of the truth and following the leads as they present themselves is
really interesting to read.
Good strong characters with very well-defined personalities and a plot that is easy and
intriguing.

Okay this book had soooooo much potential..but it just fell flat for me. It’s my understanding that Casey White can be read alone and does not have to be part of a series, however, I couldn’t help but feel that I was missing big plot holes in the story. Overall, the crime itself was told in a very compelling way, and I liked how the story was made to come full circle with the relationship between the perpetrator and the detective, but that was really it. I felt like I was missing key components of a story that could have been so much more. I really appreciate Bookotoure for sending me this book in exchange for my honest feedback, I would definitely pick up another Casey white detective novel, just to satiate my curiosity in regards to the other storylines present in this novel.
