"An inspirational guidebook filled with 272 pages of tips, techniques, features, and intuitive hands-on exercises endorsed by leading design houses."
A book discussing architectural design in layman's terms using LEGO bricks as a tool. This book was included in a box with 1210 LEGO bricks for use in the exercises described in the book.
This is a book that is exactly what it claims to be: an inspirational guide to crating your own Lego buildings. Plus more. It gives (a very) concise history of modern architecture and lays down the bare basics of architecture. As source of information, it was really useful and entertaining and shows the many, many new faces and trends and philosophies of modern architecture. As a handbook, it is also useful since it doesn't put ideas into your head but helps you use your imagination. And there's another plus side: the book comes with a truly fantastic set which I simply adore and cannot get enough of. So, this book succeded for me on two levels as well, and for this I am grateful.
If this book were bigger it would make for a nice coffee table style book on architecture. It's filled with pictures of real and imagined architecture, some using LEGO, but most contributed by the half dozen architecture studios that participated in making the book.
The bulk of the book is made up of six sections, each one dedicated to one of the contributing studios. Each of these sections begins with an overview of what projects the studio is best known for and some discussion of their design philosophies. There is then a short "hands on" exercise for the reader to go through using LEGO followed by some comments and pictures taken when members of the actual studio performed a similar exercise.
Overall, I found the book an interesting read as a light look at architectural design philosophy, but found it much less useful when it came to advice on how to use the LEGO bricks that come with the book to further explore the concepts. Many of the "hands on" exercises aren't even able to be duplicated using just the bricks provided with the book. The most useful bit is the very last section that briefly describes a half dozen techniques for building with LEGO.
