Titanic #1

Titanic The Lost Child

Rate this book
One bright April day in 1912, six little girls sailed with their families on the "grandest ship ever" - the Titanic - and into the history books. But did one of them actually survive that tragic night?

When young widow Arlisle Shepherd receives an invitation to attend the 100 year anniversary memorial cruise for the descendants of passengers of the ill-fated Titanic, she is more than baffled. She is both suspicious and fearful. Suspicious because she believes she has no Titanic ancestor; fearful because of the threatening phone calls she's been receiving since the unsolved murder of her detective husband a year earlier.

As Arlie's search for her mysterious ancestor takes her deep into her grandmother's secretive past, to elderly chatty neighbors who suddenly refuse to talk, to lonely cemeteries and to increasing threats and suspicious deaths, it also pushes her toward the possibility of once more opening her heart. But - has one of those closest to her betrayed her?

And ultimately - is solving the mystery of her Titanic ancestor worth her life?

***historical mystery blended with clean, traditional romantic suspense***

Even though I've updated my Goodreads App it doesn't always work right.

Regarding this but book I'm a bit puzzled. It's publication date was 2013. An average of four stars for 45 reviews? I agree with another reviewer. I found it disjointed. It started off well but like a lot of fiction it's predictable. Disappointed in the ending.
Then she has the French maid with speech that drove me crazy. Then the Italian cousin's speech that was bad.
There were several things that didn't make sense.
Will not read her second Titanic mystery. Recently I read a couple of memoirs by survivors. They were so much better!!

It was the title and blurb that caught my eye. I love reading stories based on the Titanic. I was anxious to start it and I read the first couple of pages, then it took me a while to read the rest because of time restraints. I had a long road trip planned and read it then.

I wondered what the goal of the main character would be. Arlie is a very flighty person who can't seem to finish a thought or sentence. Almost every conversation ended in a -- or a ... The characters were constantly interrupting each other making the thought process disjointed. It made trying to follow her thought process like riding with a driver learning to drive a stick shift.

I was intrigued with how Arlie would find out she was related to someone on the Titanic. Bonnie has a good idea. A little girl was taken and put on a boat with a strange man. She and the man survived. All the portions about the little girl and her parents were interesting and accurate. I almost just read those to the end, but didn't.

It's what happened to the Ellie after she arrived in the USA that became very confusing. The process of disclosing the bits of her life while trying to figure out why people were dying, why Arlie was scared sometimes and not others, made me at times want to stop and not bother to continue.

The only reason I did finish it was because I owed it to Bonnie after I told her some concerns I had at the beginning of the book.

I think if she were to go back and re-write this book, with an outline of what she has, taking out all the things that slap the reader while they try to get through it, it would be an awesome story.

As a writer, I've had a number of stories published and I've had authors review and help me become a better writer. I see the things that stick out as I tried to read around them.
I see she had a writers critique group read and approve this, I'd change writing groups.

A good read

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I have always been fascinated by the Titanic and stories about it. Plus, I have recently been trying to sort out my family history so the story was interesting from that point of view too. I hope the author writes more in the series.

Though a little disjointed at times, I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a present day woman who has a connection to the Titanic. Though it becomes obvious fairly early on how Arlie is connected to her ancestor, the whys of the threats and mishaps that dog her are a little more shrouded.
