Walter Moers was born in 1957 and is a writer, cartoonist, painter and sculptor. He has refused to be photographed ever since his comic strips The Little Asshole and Adolf were published, the latter leading him to be declared persona non grata by the political right in Germany. Walter Moers lives in Hamburg.

A Wolperting´s journey to find his true identity, many adventures, and some horrible surprises.

Moers´puts loads of mythology and legends in this one, making the hero´s quest through different fantastical settings and switching between levels and styles of humor, from slapstick to some deeper ones and even something meta at the end, although that´s more a kind of irony thing.

I´ve, in the review of the first part, compared Moers with Pratchett, and I will add that it´s not that sophisticated and dark sarcasm and hidden criticism that flows through each chapter, but more of an extra in a funny journey mainly aimed at entertaining the audience, and often and suddenly popping up and showing what´s behind the seemingly harmonic idyll. It´s also not executed with multiple, interwoven character and plot arcs that enable the laughs and insights, but easygoing and often done with introspections or realizations of the characters and dry and calm understanding of context.

What inspiring lands the already, often thousands of years, existing tales, stories, and moralizing boredoms and bloody and violent machismo of passed on more or less wisdom, can be and how weak and illogical many of them are, because they promote stupid political and social systems, often comes to mind when reading Moers or Pratchett. They are taking the pieces, removing the pathos, patriotism, and patriarchism, the downplaying of dictatorships, nationalism, and sick ideologies and give them what they deserve, humiliation and derision.

Because one is so used to see the many classical, in each country and on each continent, traditional, good old tales and stories with a kind of nostalgic, pink, unrealistic lense, one is blind to the underlying monstrosities of pasts everyday people´s lives. It´s also a good tool to differentiate between the wise, timeless, and important works with a message about the importance of solidarity, justice, and equality and the indoctrination camp side promoting something like, let´s say, a king, a dictator, who is a kind of Messian archetype figure, although everyone acting that way in modern times would be seen as a warmongering mass murderer.

Moers may have become my favorite author. I picked this book up on a whim, off the sale table at Powell's, and it was stunning. I think it's a children's book, but it's the rare children's book that doesn't adjust the language to read at "a sixth-grade reading level" or sanitize any of the violence. This book turned out to be the beautiful love child of J.K. Rowling and Norton Juster, raised by L. Frank Baum and the entire staff DC Comics. Beautifully illustrated, marvelously gory and violent while still lighthearted and playful, stunningly imaginative, and incredibly detailed. I'm in love. I immediately went out and bought the other two books of his that have been translated into English.

Sein Start ins Leben ist allerdings mehr als etwas holprig und größtenteils die reinste Hölle – sinnbildlich und wortwörtlich. Was Moers auch mit seinen Ortsnamen und Benennung seiner phantastischen Wesen zeigt, wie z.B. bei den ‚Teufelzyklopen‘, dem Ort ‚Hel‘ in Untenwelt und Vielem mehr. 🖤🖤🖤

Gleich in den ersten 100 Seiten wird klar, dass es sich hierbei um eine besondere Heldengeschichte ganz nach Moers handelt. 🐕⚔️ Das Unmögliche wird hier möglich und dies zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch die gesamte Heldenreise. Oder sollte man an dieser Stelle eher von einem silbernen Faden sprechen, denn dieser ist es der Rumos Weg leitet und um ihm zu folgen, geht er stets nach vorne und weicht niemals zurück. Dies führt zu den interessantesten Begegnungen, abenteuerlichsten Orten und spektakulärsten Szenen.

Der Roman ist in zwei Bücher geteilt - eines spielt in Obenwelt, das andere in Untenwelt. Besonders Untenwelt muss man einfach lieben! Moers Fantasie lässt hier nichts zu wünschen übrig. Er spielt mit den Klischees der Hölle und schafft dadurch eine verdrehte Welt, deren Schrecken zugleich so parodiert sind, dass es nicht nur nervenaufreibend ist, sondern auch einfach nur witzig. Außerdem, wer das Zamomin aus ‚Die 13 1/2 Leben des Käpt’n Blaubär‘ kennt und liebt, kommt hier erneut auf seinen Kosten, denn das Zamomin mischt Zamonien bzw. die Untenwelt erneut auf!

Jede Szene und jeder Charakter ist clever gestaltet und lässt keinen Spielraum für Kritikpunkte! ❣️❣️❣️

The novel makes an enchanting start to Rumo's story and the beginning of his life. Within the first 100 pages, it becomes clear that this is a special heroic story in the style of Moers. 🐕⚔️The impossible becomes possible here and this runs like a red thread through the entire hero's journey. Or should one rather speak of a silver thread here, because it is this thread that guides Rumo's path and in order to follow it, he always moves forward and never backs down. This leads to the most interesting interactions, adventurous places and spectacular scenes.

The novel is divided into two books - one set in the 'Obenwelt'/'Upper World/Aboveworld', the other in the 'Untenwelt'/'Lower World/(Underworld)'. You simply have to love the 'Untenwelt'/'Lower World/(Underworld)' in particular! Moers lives out his imagination to the maximum here. He plays with the clichés of hell, creating a twisted world whose horrors he simultaneously spoofs, so that it's not only nerve-wracking, but also just plain funny. In addition, anyone who knows and loves the Zamomin from 'The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear, can look forward to reading more about it here, because the Zamomin is shaking up Zamonia, or rather the Underworld, once again!

Every scene and every character is cleverly designed and leaves no room for criticism! ❣️❣️❣️

I had planned to read this 3rd installment in the series back in February but then Audible lost the rights to the audiobook and I was waiting for them to get them back, which they didn't. Took me a while to find a working solution with another bookstore chain and their app but here we finally are.

After Captain Bluebear's (mostly made-up) adventures and the retelling of the fairytale of two lost children, Walter Moers turned to the time-tested tradition of adventure stories. Yes, all his novels mirror one famous literary genre and this follows true greats like Dumas. It also has elements of the Arthurian legend and different mythologies.

Rumo is a Wolpertinger - a creature partly dog, partly wolf but civilized and, in half the cases, able to walk on two legs and talk. The ones that do walk on two legs and talk are formidable fighters, too. One day, by chance, he meets someone who is able to teach him a little something about speech and history which sets him on his path to Wolperting, the city of all Wolpertingers. There, he learns how to read and write and do math, but also how to fight properly and with almost any weapon. He makes friends and falls in love. But just when our little hero is settling in, tragic events take his home away. So what else is he supposed to do other than follow the baddies, infiltrate their place and rescue everybody?!


So yeah, like I said, very traditional outline with the summary sounding quite banal. How this author constructed the story, however, was anyting but. Sure, it took a while to get going but again: that makes it follow in the footsteps of great classics. And once we WERE going, it was a fast and wild ride with barely enough time to catch your breath.

I loved the incorporation of mythological elements - especially of Norse mythology - so much. To my delight, there was one more element added to the mix: the one we know from movies such as Innerspace and children's documentaries such as Es war einmal ... das Leben (I don't think that was ever translated into English but it's a series of short cartoon documentaries, in this case about how a human body works).

As usual, I also marveled at Moers' ability to take up a yarn, any yarn, and spin his very own rich tapestry of a story with it. Every character was lively (whether I found them endearing or infuriating), the places unique and memorable and the writing so crisp, it transported you to Wolperting as much as the world underground.

Naturally, it doesn't hurt that the audio was narrated wonderfully by Dirk Bach, who can be (or at least sounds) as crazy as the characters here. However, the paperback is also rather wonderful thanks to the very imaginative design (not just great illustrations and maps but also the way certain dialogues, songs and other parts were presented).


No, this is not one of my favorite entries in the series but the sheer amount of imagination and craftmanship in how it was written makes this another fantastic entry in the series and on this author's level, any criticism is nitpicking anyway.

I completely disagree with the Washington Post - Rumo is no mash-up of Rowling/Douglas Adams/Shel Silverstein, nor is it *silly*. Moers is like no one else I've ever read, I think I can safely say that he stands alone in his style of writing. This particular novel has more plotline than previous ones I've read, and yes, it was too long - but it was too much of a *good* thing, which is better than too much of a bad thing. Everyone has got to try reading a Moers book at least once - he is so fabulously inventive and quirky that it restores my goodwill towards humanity. Rumo is quite bloody and violent, which doesn't seem to help it as a children's book - however, kids can be quite bloodthirsty beings, and enjoy fantasy battles immensely without mixing them up with real life, so...be warned, but don't deprive them of the wonder, either.

It's lines like these that endear me to 'Rumo':

'Rice-grain literature! Rice-grain literature! Whole novels inscribed by Bonsai Mites on grains of creamed rice! Hundreds of titles in stock!'

Walter Moers hat die (seltene) Gabe, Bücher zu schreiben, die man gerne in regelmässigen Abständen wieder liest. Nicht, weil er so verwickelt schreibt, dass man mehrere Anläufe braucht, um die Gedanken zu verstehen, sondern schlicht, weil es spannend ist. Wer ein Wolf und ein Reh vereint, um die sagenhaft schnellen und starken Wolpertinger zu kreieren, der hat fürwahr viel Fantasie.

Der irre, kreative, überbordende Ideenwitz ist schier unerschöpflich in Moers Zamonienromanen. Nicht alle haben denselben Fluss in der Geschichte und, zum Beispiel, die 13 1/2 Leben des Käpt’n Blaubärs ist vieles erklärerischer, als bei Rumo. Das hemmt dort das Vorwärtskommen.

Hier aber haben Ideen Platz gefunden, die ständig wieder aufgegriffen werden und somit der Geschichte zudienen, statt selber Geschichte sein zu wollen. Zum Beispiel Voltozan Smeik, die Haifischmade, die als Nebenfigur relativ viel Platz bekommt, zu Recht dann aber auch mit all dem Erlebten später wieder in die Geschichte eingreift.

Diese eloquente, ins sich geschlossenen und trotzdem (bücher-)übergreifenden Geschichten machen es aus, dass Rumo auch nach dem dritten Durchlesen immer noch mein Lieblings-Moers ist. Blutig (passend für Oktober), schnell, packend, rührend, liebevoll und eben voller Sprachwitz, und einer überbordenden Fantasie, die auf keiner Seite fehlt.

Rumo ist ein kleiner Wolpertingerwelpe auf einer Farm, der von allen gehegt und umsorgt wird, als der Hof eines Tages überfallen wird. Alle Bewohner werden auf die wandernden Teufelsfelsen verschleppt, wo Rumo in Gefangenschaft zu einem echten Wolpertinger heranwächst. Er macht die Bekanntschaft der Haifischmade Smeik, die ihm schließlich dabei hilft, bei seiner ersten Heldentat alle Gefangenen der Insel zu befreien.

Von dort aus bahnt sich der junge Rumo seinen Weg durch Zamonien nach Wolperting, der Heimstätte aller Wolpertinger. Ein silbernes Band scheint ihn geradezu magisch dorthin zu ziehen. Sowohl auf dem Weg als auch in Wolperting warten weitere Gelegenheiten, sich zu beweisen, auf Rumo. Das Schicksal scheint Großes für ihn geplant zu haben.

Als Rumo eines Tages von einem Abenteuer im Nurnenwald zurückkehrt, findet er Wolperting verlassen vor. Alle Bewohner, samt seiner geliebten Rala, scheinen wie vom Erdboden verschluckt. Um sie zu retten, macht Rumo sich auf den Weg in eine ganz neue Welt: die schaurige Untenwelt. Und schon bald merkt Rumo, dass das größte Abenteuer erst noch auf ihn wartet. Zeit, zu zeigen, ob er wirklich das Zeug zum Helden hat!

Seit mittlerweile drei oder vier Jahren schreibe ich Rumo jedes Jahr auf meine 12 for 2020/2021/2022 whatever Liste und bevor sich auch dieses Jahr dem Ende neigt, musste ich dieses Projekt mal angehen. Die bisherigen Zamonien-Bücher fand ich sehr unterschiedlich stark. Irgendwo hatte ich mal gelesen, dass Rumo das beste Buch dieses fiktiven Universums sei, deswegen hatte ich ziemlich hohe Erwartungen.

Erstmal zum Positiven: Die Zeichnungen sind wieder sehr fantasie- und detailreich und unterstützen die Handlung sehr gut. Immer wenn ich dachte: „Ah, wie sieht dieses Getier jetzt aus?“, kam auf der nächsten Seite eine passende Zeichnung. Außerdem war die Handlung wieder geradezu absurd fantastisch, was man einfach nur bestaunen kann.

Während ich die Handlung in ihrer Allgemeinheit ganz nett fand, muss ich sagen, dass nie so wirklich Zug reinkam. Ich hatte leider zu keinem Zeitpunkt das Gefühl, das Buch nicht mehr aus der Hand legen zu können. Die Abenteuer, die Liebesgeschichte, die Bösewichte… irgendwie war alles ganz gut, aber dann trotzdem einfach mittelmäßig. Einige der Figuren (Smeik, Friftar, Urs,…) haben mir ganz gut gefallen, aber oft habe ich an Stellen nach dem Witz oder der tiefergehenden Bedeutung gesucht, wo dann einfach nichts war.
Das hat dazu geführt, dass ich ziemlich lange an dem Buch gelesen habe. Ich glaube auch, dass es kein gutes Zeichen ist, wenn man bei jeder Zeichnung, die kommt, erleichtert ist, dass man auf dieser Seite nicht so viel lesen muss.

Liebe Moers-Fans, es tut mir so, so leid, aber für mich war Rumo leider nur ein 3-Sterne-Buch.

Wow. Das war anders. Anders, als alles, was ich bisher gelesen habe. Ich muss sagen, dass es mein erster Moers Roman war und ich hunderte von Seiten gebraucht habe, bis mich das Buch gepackt hat. “Gepackt” ist kein treffender Ausdruck, aber ich finde keinen. Das war eine wilde Achterbahnfahrt durch fantastische und schreckliche Fieberträume und die Dosis war für mich ein bisschen zu hoch.
Bis zum Ende.
Alles ergibt einen Sinn! Sinn im Wahnsinn, oder Sinn im Sinnwahn. Ich bin nicht sicher, ob ich gerade selbst mit einem blutbefleckten Schwert durch die Höhlengänge gerannt bin oder mit einem Unterblutboot durch Aterien gerast. Oder saß ich doch die ganze Zeit auf dem Sofa? Wahnsinn.

Romanzo enciclopedico d'inaudita bellezza sgorgato dall'insondabile fantasia di Walter Moers, padre di Zamonia, genio dell'intreccio romanzesco nonché ironico pazzoide, Rumo e i prodigi nell'oscurità si presenta al lettore come un'opera contenitore di infinite storie, fra le sue pagine ci si può imbattere nel resoconto del secolare assedio di Forte Vermicchio, in un diario coi progressi scientifici sullo studio della nebbia del dottor Kolibril, allievo e rivale del professor Noctambulotti, nella storia di una spada demoniaca raccontata da lei medesima, nella leggenda di Sanguegelido e della cerva che lo amava, in una guida per la costruzione di un ideale giardino per schermidori alla maniera di Uscian DeLucca, in un agile excursus storiografico sui novantanove monarchi tartarini del Mondo di sotto, nelle istruzioni del più micidiale strumento di tortura mai inventato, senza contare le innumerevoli descrizioni di flora e fauna strampalate che popolano Zamonia, paradiso di ogni tassonomista.

E infine c’è la grande epopea di Rumo il croccamauro, protagonista indiscusso di quest'avventura, combattente nato suo malgrado, costantemente alla ricerca del proprio filo d'argento, visibile solo con l'occhio interiore, seguendo il quale sarà costretto a diventare il più grande eroe di Zamonia.

Da un punto di vista formale lo considero persino più riuscito del bell’Orso Blu, dove la narrazione picaresca dava spazio a microstorie narrativamente slegate dalla trama principale; anche in Rumo le digressioni abbondano, ma concorrono tutte a sciogliere l'intricatissimo intreccio, nulla viene buttato lì per caso, giusto per dirlo, tutto ha la sua ragion d'essere. Si nota l’evoluzione stilistica di Moers da un libro all'altro.

Zamonien Teil drei nun auch durchwandert. An der Seite von Rumo ein wirklich tolles Abenteuer.
Es hätte weniger Gewalt sein können, das ging mir stellenweise wirklich an die Subtanz.
Aber es gab auch viel Freundschaft, Kameradschaft und Liebe, das macht es dann fast wieder wett.
Moers überbordene Fantasie ist erstaunlich. Man fällt eigentlich von einer neuen Idee in die nächste, ohne dass es zu viel wird.
Nach einer kleinen Pause geht es dann bald weiter in die Stadt der träumenden Bücher. Ich freu mich schon sehr.

This book is highly creative and has an interesting story, if it would only manage to stick with it. We are presented with backstories to every minor character and there are far to many of them. There is sometimes not really a focus. But on the upside, everything is kind of relevant, either to understand the character right now, or it becomes important later on.

The illustrations made by the author are great to better understand his visions. I enjoyed them a lot.

There are a little too much fight scenes for my taste, but everything you might not care about that much is easily skippable thanks to notes on the sides demonstrating the beginning of a new topic.

I was surprised how much I liked the characters that normally are not my kind of persons. Rumo, at least in the beginning, is easily bored and does only care for fighting, still I was sucked into his story from the beginning by Moers' writing. All the more I enjoyed Romu's development.

My favorite part of the book is Rala's story near the end. It felt intense and dealt so differently from how other authors would do such a plot. I must admit I did not like every bit of the whole story as much as others, but on the whole, I found it to be a good book. The wonderful maps and pictures may be the reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 3 stars, but yeah, it's worth it. (Edit: Updating to 3 stars, 4 just doesn't feel right retrospectively)

I recommend this to readers who like to read fantasy with new creatures and concepts, because this is, in my opinion, the biggest strength of this book. It involves a coming of age story, too, but I think for liking this book you must be open to Moers' kind of creativity.

The one of the great achievements of Rumo is that, despite being a book of epic proportions, never becomes a chore to read. There are many more to choose from: for example, the delightful illustrations by the author spaced throughout, the biazare flights of imagination, the varied and unique characters, and a plot that is strange but never hard to follow.

Strange is a good way to describe Rumo, but it is a strangeness grounded in both science and in literary savviness. Cliches are subverted with loving care, and insiduous and obscure references peppered throughout the text makes it especially rewarding to a knowledgable reader. (An example: a set of surgical tools based off prehistoric sea-creatures.) Knowing that many more are still lurking inside makes re-reading a tantalising prospect.

For all its weird and wonderful creatures, Rumo does occasionally touch some darker depths. In fact, in its twisting and dreamlike folds, it manages to hit almost every spot: surreal humour, pure escapism, genuine adventure, and also manages to be quite moving at points.

A fabulous book, quite possibly my favourite. It manages the near impossible feat of rambling engagingly.

Rumo the wonder pup is named after a card game. If I had to choose a card game name for myself I would go with “Solitaire”. Not as catchy of course, but maybe going by a shortened version of the name instead might improve it a little.

THEM: “How is the girl book cave treating you Solly?”

ME: “Not a cave built for two friend, move along.”

Sounds perfect to me.

Rumo the wonder pup is a Wolperting but it took him a while to learn this fact because like my favorite Bluebear from another Zamonia story, Rumo’s first memory is of just existing. Thankfully this existence has placed him in the arms of a caring adoptive farm family. But what kind of story would it be if things stayed safe and happy? Thus begins a journey that lands Rumo in numerous situations that have zero learning curves. Think fast or be eaten alive would be the motto of this fantastical story of imaginary critters in imaginary lands.

WHY I LOVED IT:

Read the paragraph above again and let me know how anyone could not want to know more about this odd story. An engaging writing style plus off the wall illustrations wraps this one up with a big, fancy, glittery bow.

WHY I DIDN’T LOVE IT ENOUGH TO GIVE IT FIVE STARS:

It’s a bit much in the length department. I would find myself putting it down more often than I would have liked simply because the daunting idea of that much still left to go kept bubbling up. A great story should wipe this thought from your mind making the pages flutter on by. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was that caused this flaw in my reading. Maybe it was the layers upon layers of adjectives or maybe it was because it was a lot darker than I expected. There is a lot of war, fighting and death in this one and not as much humor as was in the first book I read about this fictional world. So really, not the book’s fault but more a preference issue with this read.

And now it’s on to wherever my silver thread might take me.

I picked this book up on a whim from the local used book store. A walking talking wolf thing wielding a dandelion knife possessed by a demon just sounded fun. The blurb stating the book was equal parts J.K. Rowling, Douglas Adams, and Shell Silverstein seemed a little hard to live up to, but it was interesting praise none the less. When I looked on goodreads and saw an average rating of over 4 stars, I was sold.

I'm a bit sad to say that the book didn't live up to the four star rating, the high praise, or my expectations. That's not to say it was bad, but it was nowhere near brilliant.

Rumo, that main characters, is among the most dull, flat, and uninteresting main characters I've ever read. His assertion that he's bad with words and only good at fighting is valid. As I was reading I kept going to find out what what happen to some of the other, more interesting or dynamic characters, Rumo himself was just the vehicle to get me there. The other characters were good for the most part. Not always exciting, not always funny, but generally good, well made characters. There were certainly some laugh out loud moments, and some great page turning reading as well.

The book also contains a lot of unnecessary world building. Multiple page back stories on characters that are only mentioned were a bit annoying. The amount of invented creatures was matched only by the number of made up words. Many of the creatures, and words, were unnecessary. Like the tangential back stories, I think the book may have been a bit better off minus a few of them.

Overall though, this was a good, fun fantasy read. If you're a fantasy fan it worth reading, but I can't imagine putting it on any must read, or best of lists.

Ich wusste eigentlich schon ziemlich am Anfang, dass mir dieses Buch gefallen wird, und trotzdem hat es von Seite zu Seite meine Erwartungen übertroffen und sich direkt in meine Favoritenliste katapultiert.
Es ist ein fantastisches Abenteuer, mit einem hundeähnlichen Helden, der auf den ersten Seiten beginnt zu zahnen.
Ganz dem Stil klassischer Abenteuerromane folgend, wächst Rumo mit seinen Aufgaben und zieht mit seinem Schwert durch Zamonien, immer der Nase nach.
Der Schreibstil wechselt zwischen niedlich, schön, witzig, spannend, grausam und blutig und wird stets begleitet von einer Prise Wahnsinn.
Was Rumo & die Wunder im Dunkeln jetzt aber so besonders für mich macht, ist, dass ganz spezielle Themen bei mir immer wieder genau ins Schwarze getroffen haben.
So ist Zahnpflege ein Hauptunterrichtsfach, eine unfertige Doktorarbeit wird mit einer schrecklichen Krankheit verglichen und es gibt grandios kreative Ausflüge in die Anatomie, Physiologie und Pathologie.

Oh war das toll. Ich habs natürlich geschafft die Bücher komplett achronologisch zu lesen, aber das tut dem Ganzen keinen Abbruch. Bemerkenswert finde ich nicht nur die Fülle an Sub-plots und Geschichten in Geschichten die alle letztlich von Bedeutung sind, sondern auch die Tatsache, dass die unaussprechlichen Grausamkeiten das wohlige Gefühl, dass sich bei mir einstellte, nicht kleinkriegen konnten. Ich war entrüstet, empört, angeekelt und dann kurz darauf entzückt, glücklich und verzaubert.

Rumo ist natürlich toll. Ich will außerdem ein Einhörnchen, aber das wollte ich ja schon als ich Ensel und Grete las.

Am Schönsten ist aber die allerletzte Seite, weil ich das Buch mit einem breiten Grinsen geschlossen habe.

Warum muss es am Ende immer um Beziehungen gehen😩 Klar, das Buch ist von 2003, aber in meinen Augen gab es hier die perfekte Vorlage, um eine wunderschöne Geschichte über Freundschaft zu erzählen. Nämlich die von Rumo und Smeik. Zum Teil wird sie auch erzählt, aber am Ende geht es halt doch wieder um eine Liebesgeschichte, die mich nicht abholt😴

Dennoch hat mir "Rumo" super viel Spaß gemacht🐶 Gerade die kleinen kreativen Geschichten, die nebenbei erzählt werden, packen einen immer wieder oder bringen einen zum Lachen. Liebe die Unvorhandenen Winzlinge 😂

My 4th experience with MoersLand - and my positive feeling about it follows a similar feeling about previous Moers books. Many of my general thoughts regarding 'Rumo' can be found in a previous review (of 'The Alchemaster's Apprentice'):

'TAA' may be my favorite of the 4 I've read - most likely because it felt the most appealing on a personal level.

'Rumo' may have felt less like it touched me personally - nevertheless, its imagination is equally exquisite and, again, seemingly boundless. With a cast of characters that would be pages long if actually listed, this is a huge, HUGE story - one that flies off in countless directions (sometimes with backstories about characters / situations which tend to be not that necessary but which are still surprisingly enriching).

The novel's titular character - and our hero - is a breed of dog who (according to legend in Zamonia, a large land in which the story is largely set) is the result of an ancient love between a werewolf and a deer who were both magically transformed humans (that's *some* love story!). But Rumo's ancestry and his formative years are ultimately of less importance. In fact, in hindsight, Part One ('Overworld') of this two-part work is easier to forget than Part Two ('Netherworld').

That's because Part Two is so much scarier. Netherworld is a bad place. An evil place. Basically, it's a fascistic Hell - with a crackpot king manipulated by his Machiavellian aide; two wackos who live only for the thrills derived from the commanding Theatre of Death. Netherworld is where the inhabitants of Overworld find themselves one day when their village is swallowed whole and thrust below.

It will, of course, be up to Rumo (along with some of his newfound companions) to save the day. But, before that day *finally* comes, a whole lot - of the magical, the mystical, the malevolent - goes down. This is not a tale you will want to read to kids before bedtime. ~ unless your kids are tough as nails.

There's also a love story - in fact, a dual one; vague but still central - in the thread throughout. Light will have to overcome darkness as never before.

The long-and-winding story (once again with Moers' own deliciously demented drawings) doesn't have a typical conclusion, by any means. The tie-up isn't as simple as a climax reached. The book's finish is therefore also an ornate one - and the 'fight to the death' goes on for about 100+ breathless pages, making for one page-turning slam-bang of a send-off.

I was at once taken in by this great saga of a wolperting dog who is smarter and braver than most inhabitants from his Island Zamonia.

If a bit more graphically violent than it's first companion book " The first 13 &1/2 lives of Captain Bluebear", the miraculous adventures of this hero begin with his kidnapping as a baby. His unfortunate luck brings him to be a captive on a floating rock inhabited by savage cyclops whose main desire is to eat live beings in gruesome manners. Fortunately, this wolperting meets a shark grub that helps him grow up and confront his enemies.

BUT WAIT! THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNNING! THERE IS MORE!

As Rumo explores this fascinating world, he comes across a gamut of strange yet interesting characters that sometimes hunt him, sometimes haunt him and sometimes help him; all the while our dear character becomes wiser and more endearing.

To write a full summary is to do it a disservice. This is a book I highly recommend to ALL. It is full of witticism, cleverness, unaccountable imagination, and oddly enough, great criticism to the world we live in.

It is as if inventing this world, Mr. Moers draws a simile in which we must compare Zamonia to our world; somehow we are found lacking, our world pales in comparison, even though it also feels as if we are somehow safer here. If given a chance I would, without thinking twice, jump into Zamonia and live there the rest of my days... (688 pgs)

Das war eine wundervolle, von Beginn an durchweg spannende Reise voller Abenteuer, zusammen mit Rumo und seinen Weggefährten. Einen halben Punkt ziehe ich ab weil mich manche Szenen wirklich schockiert haben. So brutal und teilweise ziemlich Ekel erregend hätte ich das wirklich nicht erwartet.
Dennoch habe ich dieses Buch äußerst gerne gelesen, mich kein bisschen gelangweilt, mich von Rumos Mut und Leidenschaft mitreißen lassen und das Buch am Ende mit einem Lächeln auf dem Gesicht geschlossen.

La fantasia di Moers non smette mai di stupirmi: dalla storia di Forte Vermicchio alla dinastia dominatrice di Tartaro, dai minuscoli inesistenti ai vrachi, dal viaggio all'interno del cervello di un Tenebrone al cuore di un croccamauro. E i personaggi: Rumo, eroe silenzioso, frettoloso e a volte incosciente; Smeik, lo squalombrico che non si è mai messo in gioco in prima persona in una battaglia ma ha sempre fatto da consigliere o al massimo gestiva le scommesse; Urs, un combattente eccezionale che preferisce approfondire la passione per la cucina; Friftar, che pianifica un colpo di stato da decenni; Gaunab, il re che unisce dentro di sé la follia dei 98 regnanti precedenti; Tiktak, il comandante delle facce di bronzo frutto di un assemblaggio di parti metalliche al cui interno c'è lo zamonium che gli conferisce un intelletto... e tantissimi altri. Tanta, tanta roba. Rumo diventa uno dei miei libri preferiti in assoluto e so già che difficilmente troverò un'altra storia di questa portata...

Mit "Rumo & Die Wunder im Dunkeln" bin ich beinahe am Ende meiner (leider total achronologischen) Reise durch das Zamonien-Universum angekommen. Hätte ich allerdings gewusst, wie absolut großartig dieses Buch werden würde, hätte ich es schon viel früher zur Hand genommen. Dieses zweiteilige Riesenwerk nimmt uns mit auf eine epische Heldenreise voller Spannung, Humor und blutrünstiger Kämpfe, die spielend mit dem Kultklassiker "Die 13½ Leben des Käpt’n Blaubär" mithalten kann und damit zu meinen absoluten Favoriten von Walter Moers gehört.

Doch wie immer zuerst noch wenige Worte zur Gestaltung. Das Cover zeigt den jungen Wolpertinger Rumo, der den Kopf zwischen rot-schwarzen Vorhangfalten hindurchsteckt (eine Szene aus der Kindheit des späteren Helden). Damit erinnert es stark an Käpt´n Blaubär, dessen Cover in ähnlicher Form nur in blauer Ausgestaltung gehalten ist. Generell ist "Rumo" mit dem schlichten, aber dennoch aussagekräftigen Covermotiv, dem großflächig gemusterten Hintergrund und dem großen gelben Titel ein typisches Zamonien-Cover, die somit in Kombination toll aussehen. Zu Hochleistungen aufgelaufen ist der Autor auch wieder mit seinen Illustrationen, die wie immer nicht nur klasse aussehen, sondern dabei helfen der Geschichte zu folgen und auch schwer Vorstellbares wie das das hässlichste und verrückteste Getier von Untenwelt zum Leben zu erwecken! Zusätzlich hilft eine Karte von Untenwelt bei der Orientierung.

Erste Sätze: "Rumo konnte gut kämpfen. Aber zu dem Zeitpunkt, an dem seine Geschichte beginnt, hatte er davon noch keine Ahnung und er wusste auch nicht, dass er ein Wolpertinger war und einmal der größte Held Zamoniens werden sollte."

Mit diesen Worten beginnt die Geschichte von Rumo, den wir auf seinem langen Weg vom unbedarften Welpen bis zum größten Helden Zamoniens begleiten dürfen. Mit dem Fokus auf dem Leben einer Figur, die uns mit auf eine Reise quer durch Zamonien nimmt, erinnert der grundsätzliche Aufbau an den Abenteuerroman "Die 13½ Leben des Käpt’n Blaubär". Auch wenn es einige Parallelen gibt, hebt sich "Rumo" erzählerisch aber an vielen Stellen ab und geht seinen eigenen Weg. Anders als der eher episodisch erzählte Käpt’n Blaubär entfaltet sich in "Rumo" ein straffer Spannungsbogen, in dem zwar auch einige erzählerische Ausflüge stattfinden, die aber alle aufeinander aufbauen, sodass die Handlung eine kohärente Entwicklung durchläuft, die in einem spektakulären Showdown an mehreren Schauplätzen gipfelt. Außerdem liegt der Fokus hier anders als in den weit verstreuten Leben Blaubärs stark auf zwei Orten: der utopischen Stadt Wolperting und den höllischen Gefilden der Untenwelt. Dementsprechend ist "Rumo & die Wunder im Dunkeln" auch in zwei große Abschnitte geteilt, die in Obenwelt und Untenwelt spielen.

"Dies war die Welt, wo sich Totes wieder in Lebendiges verwandelte, wo aus Leichnamen Maden und anderes Getier wurde, aus Kompost neues Wachstum, aus versunkenem Blut gefährliche Nurnen. Es war eine grausame, rücksichtlose Welt voller gieriger Geschöpfe und Geräusche."

Der Hauptunterschied zwischen den beiden Epen aus Moers´ Feder ist allerdings die Erzählatmosphäre. Wo Moers bisherige Werke humorvolle, oft verspielte Abenteuer boten, geht "Rumo & die Wunder im Dunkeln" einen Schritt weiter und wagt sich in brutalere, blutrünstigere Gefilde. Das hängt zum Einen mit der Neigung der Wolpertinger zum Kampf, zum Anderen mit dem grotesken Setting in Untenwelt zusammen, was zu langwierigen, brutalen Gefechten führt, die entfernt an Splatter-Literatur erinnern. Walter Moers wäre allerdings nicht Walter Moers, wenn er dieses Genre nicht gezielt für sich verwenden und mit einer Prise Parodie auf die Spitze treiben würde. Besonders die verdrehte Welt von Hel und ihre Bewohner werden mit bissigem Humor und satirischen Elementen inszeniert, bis man beinahe laut lachen muss (besonders die Dialoge zwischen Grimzold und Löwenzahn, sind urkomisch). Wie gewohnt brilliert Moers dabei mit seinem außergewöhnlichen Sprachwitz, seinen cleveren Wortspielen und unzähligen Anagrammen, die zum Entschlüsseln einladen. Trotz des großzügig spritzenden Blutes bewahrt sich das Buch aber durchgängig eine warmherzige, beinahe unschuldige Grundstimmung, welche zusätzlich zu dem düsteren Humor dafür sorgt, dass Rumos Geschichte sich zu keinem Zeitpunkt besonders grausam oder belastend liest.

"Es gibt Wunder, die müssen im Dunkeln geschehen"

Die hängt vor allem mit der Hauptfigur Rumo zusammen der herrlich unbedarft von einem Abenteuer ins nächste stolpert und dessen naiver Optimismus und unerschütterlicher Mut ihn zu einem unwiderstehlichen Helden machen, den man einfach lieben muss. Auch wenn der niedliche Welpe bald zu einer muskulösen, gefährlichen Kampfmaschine heranwächst und er in vielen Situationen beweist, dass er ein ernstzunehmender Gegner ist, wirkt er durch seine planlose Art, immer der Nase nach dem silbernen Faden hinterher an allen Hindernissen vorbei in Richtung Liebe zu laufen, auch später ergreifend liebenswürdig. Er ist keine Figur großer Worte und generell herrlich unbescheiden. Er nimmt nur wenig aktiven Raum in der Geschichte ein und gerät eher aus versehen in die klassische Heldenrolle. Unterstützt von seinem Instinkt, seiner natürlichen Begabung im Kampf, einer Menge Glück und treuen Gefährten meistert er selbst die absurdesten Herausforderungen. Er stellt sich ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken einer ganzen Höhle voller Monster, aber der Mut verlässt ihn, sobald er ein Wort mit seiner Angebeteten wechseln soll. Wie soll man diese Figur nicht lieben?

"Einen Rumo zu spielen, bedeutete einerseits, das Schicksal herauszufordern und alles - wirklich alles - zu riskieren. Andererseits versprach es die Möglichkeit eines haushohen Sieges. So kam Rumo zu seinem Namen."

Unterstützt wird Rumo auf seinem Weg von einer ganzen Armee grandioser Nebenfiguren. Von der verschlagenen Haifischmade Smeik mit dem Talent für großartige Erzählungen, über die stets wagemutigen untoten Yetis, die utopisch organisierte Stadt voller gemütlicher aber gefährlicher Kämpfer, ein psychisch instabilen Blutschinken, die Unvorhandenen Winzlinge im Gehirn eines Eydeeten, einen verrückten, silbenverwechselnden König, bis hin zu General TickTack und seinen Kupfernen Kerlen – jede Figur ist einzigartig und spielt im Verlauf der Geschichte eine wichtige Rolle. Zuerst hat mich überrascht, dass Walter Moers sich hier Zeit nimmt, die Lebensgeschichten der auftauchenden Nebenfiguren zu erzählen und ab und zu auch in ihre Perspektiven an andere Handlungsorte wechselt. Dadurch wird das Buch allerdings facettenreicher, es bauen sich mehrere Nebenhandlungen für den Showdown auf und die Geschichte erhält trotz der hohen Handlungsdichte keinen gehetzten Beigeschmack. Außerdem ist wichtig zu erwähnen, dass diese zunächst scheinbar wahllosen Ausflüge alle wichtig sind für die spätere Handlung und sich am Ende alles zu einem abgedrehten, aber stimmigen Gesamtbild zusammensetzt.

"Drück uns die Daumen, Smeik." "Wünsch uns Glück!" "Mach ich." "Wie viele Daumen hast du, Smeik?" Er musste kurz nachzählen. "Vierzehn", sagte er. "Das sollte eigentlich reichen."

Besonders hervorzuheben ist neben Rumo auch Rala, die - wie mir zu diesem Zeitpunkt erst auffällt, bisher eine der wenigen weibliche Figur von Walter Moers ist (neben Prinzessin Insomnia), der weniger als ein paar Nebensätze gewidmet werden. Zwar sind beinahe alle Figuren in seinen Geschichten mehr oder weniger geschlechtslos charakterisiert, aber da ist definitiv noch dringender Ausbaubedarf Herr Moers!!! Doch zurück zum Thema: Walter Moers gelingt es im zweiten Teil der Handlung, Rala von dem reinen Objekt Rumos Begierde zu einer starken Heldin zu formen, mit der wir besonders während ihrer Episode in der Kupfernen Jungfrau mitfiebern. Die Liebesgeschichte zwischen den beiden Wolpertingern bildet dabei zwar den groben Rahmen und Rumos Hauptmotivation für die gesamte Handlung, bleibt allerdings nur minimal angeschnitten und tritt in diesem Epos über Krieg, Blut und Heldenmut hinter Freundschaft und Loyalität zurück.

Zuletzt noch ein kurzer vergleichender und einordnender Blick auf die restlichen Zamonien-Romane. Aufgrund meiner achronologischen Lesestrategie (bis auf die Buchhaim-Romane habe ich Stand heute alle erschienenen Zamonien-Werke gelesen) kamen mir ehrlich gesagt manche der hier verbauten Ideen ein wenig bekannt vor. So musste ich beim kurzen Ausflug nach Nebelheim mit der Nebelqualle beispielsweise sofort an Eydernorn und die Wolke denken ("Die Insel der tausend Leuchttürme"). Außerdem ist mir aufgefallen, dass der Autor gerne das immer wiederkehrende Motiv des spontanen Wissenszuwachs durch externe Quellen nutzt (infizierende Intelligenzbakterien, Reise durch das Gehirn eines Eydeeten, Bücherbaden im Bücherdrache etc.). Aber das tut der Gesamtoriginalität natürlich keinen Abbruch und da "Rumo" ein sehr frühes Werk ist, kann das der Geschichte definitiv nicht zur Last gelegt werden, weshalb ich bei 5 Sternen verbleibe.

"Es ist schon immer eine gefährliche Unterschätzung des Bösen gewesen, ihm zu unterstellen, es kenne keine Liebe. Lieben zu können, das ist kein Vorzug des Guten, sondern vielleicht das Einzige, was es mit dem Bösen verbindet.“


Fazit

"Rumo & die Wunder im Dunkeln" vereint rasant erzählte Abenteuer, grotesken Humor, blutrünstige Action und liebenswerte Figuren zu einem einzigartigen Gesamtwerk, das zweifellos zu den besten des Autors zählt.

Io amo i libri di Walter Moers, questo è ormai notorio. Con Il labirinto dei libri sognanti sono stato un po' deluso, ma stavolta la mia fiducia è stata ben ripagata. Per dare un'idea anche se limitata delle 700 e più pagine del libro, pensate a un libro come Terra! di Benni, con una serie di divagazioni che sono piccole storie per conto proprio. La differenza è che la storia principale è molto più complessa ed è gestita magistralmente (oltre che illustrata) da Moers, e tutti i fili che sembravano persi ritornano nel gran finale. Nel libro vediamo la crescita del giovane croccamauro Rumo ("come il gioco di carte": il guaio di farsi dare un nome dalle persone sbagliate) che si fa strada nel mondo favoloso - ma molto pericoloso - di Zamonia. Gli incontri sono di tutti i tipi, sia nel mondo di superficie che in quello sotterraneo; la fantasia di Moers è davvero inesauribile. Una lettura davvero piacevole!

Mein neustes Walter Moers Buch. Nachdem ich von "Ensel und Krete" und "Der Schreckensemeister" ein klein wenig enttäuscht war (vor allem "Der Schrecksenmeister" hat sich doch sehr gezogen) ist Rumos Geschichte wieder ein wunderbares Walter Moers Buch.
Es ist herrlich skurril, unglaublich phantasievoll und gespickt mit durchgedrehten, wahnsinnigen und sehr abwechslungsreichen Figuren.
Der Schreibstil ist, wie immer, sehr unterhaltsam und die Beschreibungen sind... eh... sehr lebhaft. Ja, General Ticktack, ich rede mit dir!
Meiner Meinung nach ordnet sich dieses Buch direkt hinter Die Stadt der Träumenden Bücher und Die 13 1/2 Leben des Käpt'n Blaubärs ein.
Deswegen auch 4 Sterne, denn diese beiden eben genannten Bücher finde ich noch einen winzigen Tacken besser... Ohne genau sagen zu können, warum. Am liebsten würde ich aber 4 1/2 Sterne vergeben.

“Румо” фактически предхожда “Градът”, двете са съответно трета и и четвърта книга от поредицата “Замония”, а именно от тази човек може да научи предоволно информация за Драконовите планини и живеещите там талантливи творци, които пътем и се защитават срещу страховити армии, най-опасната от които е тази на генерал Тиктак, чиято страховита и трагична история е сред основните линии в книгата. Но и тя е само съпътстваща на тази за малкото животинче на име Румо, което скоро ще бъде идентифицирано като волпертингер, при това от правилния тип, които притежават и интелигентност, а освен нея и страховити бойни умения и някак приятно обрисувани агресия и кръвожадност. Животът на приличното на куче същество (рогцата ще ги броим ли?) започва крайно бурно, след като е отвлечен с цяло селце от опасни пирати, а спасението му от тях (което включва тежки злощастия за пиратите) дава началото на поредица от приключения.

Hab mich irgendwie ziemlich durch das Buch gequält. Auch wenn ich die Zeichnungen und den Einfallsreichtum liebe. Walter Moers ist und bleibt einzigartig...
