4.5 ⭐️

I’ve read all of the books in the Darkmourn Universe and I can say that THIS book is the best so far! I have enjoyed every book but this was in its own league! It was very different from the first three books but I truly loved it.

You can tell the growth of Ben’s writing skills in this one be it, the characters, plot or the world-building, everything feels a lot more polished.

Absolutely loved both Ernest and Killian in this, their personalities and their own stories. They are witty and very fun to read about. Honestly, I’m in love with Killian, some of the stuff he said was heartbreakingly beautiful.

This was such a lovely and easy read for me, the characters were a pleasure to read about, the plot was gripping and the world-building was great. Can we talk about the epilogue, please? One thing about Ben is that you can guarantee that there will be mentions from our favourites from the previous books and he did not disappoint! I was truly getting a bit worried but that last chapter!! I cannot wait to read more from Ben in the future!

Thank you so much to Ben for the Arc copy, it’s been wonderful!

I don't want to give it five stars

Has it ever happened to you that you read a book that deserves a perfect rating, but that has left you totally destroyed, crushed beyond any repair and therefore you don't want to give it those five stars in revenge for the state you're in after reading the book?

Because that's the state I'm in. I have no idea what words to use to describe this book fairly. I don't know how to explain what the absolute masterpiece this book is.
I'll try to avoid spoilers, but I don't promise anything. Also, if you haven't read the other three books in this series, I recommend reading them first. While you don't need them to understand Ernest and Kilian's story, you will need them to understand the importance of the tree in which Kilian finds Ernest and to know what they are talking about in the epilogue.

That said, here I go.

The author makes use of every aspect from the classic tale of the Little Mermaid:
A Sea Witch - check
A red-haired mermaid - check
A shipwreck - check
A crab - check
Improper use of a fork - check
A battle with a giant octopus - check
Someone who loses their voice - check
Limited time to get something - check
A Powerful Magic Trident - check
Someone who wants to steal the powerful magic trident - check
And so on and do for.

I loved Kilian, he's just perfect. Ernest, on the other hand, starts out as a character without willpower, unable to do anything to help himself, and when he tries to help others, those attempts end terribly badly. But as the story progresses, he learns, little by little.

I wish Ernest had known the truth of his origin earlier in history and taken a more active part in the fate of King Terian, that was very passive. But I feel vindicated in how Hadeon ended, that felt good.

Aleanna surprised me, that wasn't what I expected, but it was a good thing.
Now I need the next book to find out what Jack is working on, what or where Darkmourn is and get my questions answered. All the stories are related in one way or another, but I feel like there's a bigger issue that we don't know anything about yet.

Good job Ben, this is really your best book so far and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author for free in exchange for an honest review. Here's my honest take on it.

If you’re looking for a romance that is rich in world building with gods and goddesses and the humans trapped in the middle of their dealings. If you want hurt/comfort, enemies to lovers, curses and high stakes, and two people learning to love each other despite the risks and danger, then you gotta check this one out. There is some violence and darkness, so definitely check out any warnings before diving in (see what I did there!)

I loved how interconnected Ernest and Killian are and how the gods have played a roll in everyones’ lives. It took me a little bit to make all the connections, but I loved how this was written.

And I adore Ernest, how headstrong and determined he is and how much he grows from a sheltered prince into a caring man. There are some very touching moments between the two as they work together. What a steamy and soft couple, I loved them so so much.

High on emotion, action, danger, this book really does have it all.

And heads up, it’s mostly a stand alone in his Darkmourn series, so you can definitely jump in with this one! But you’ll see how it’s all connected by the end of the story.

I received an. Arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first time reading anything by this author, and I’m so happy to say that this book gave me everything I was hoping for: a fun, yet dark-sided plot, warring gods, some intense spice, and some unforeseen plot twists. I will absolutely be reading the rest of the Darkmourn collection in the future, and thank you to the author for the ARC!

Migliore lettura dell’anno!

*ARC review*

I'm a huge fan of Ben Alderson, particularly of the Darkmourn Universe he created. Winning an advance copy of the book before its release date made me extremely happy! Although Lord of Eternal Night is my favorite book in the Darkmourn series, this one did not disappoint.

‘We live in a world of gods and monsters. Believe me when I tell you anything is possible.’

The book isn't set in the Darkmourn Universe we know from the other books, so I was curious about how it would connect to the rest of the series. When it did, it felt very satisfying. Ben has a firm grip on his universe, and I can't wait for the next book (please book 5 asap!). I already feel like a citizen of Darkmourn.

The story begins with a tragedy, and as in the other books, family is a significant theme. Ernest is a prince with an enchanting power that his father uses to control the kingdom, while Killian is the Sea Witch, who cleans the seas of the Mer, monsters that were once humans. Their paths cross in a way that neither can escape.

It took me a while to get into the book, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. There are so many plot twists and steamy scenes that are incredibly well-written. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, I was proven wrong (in a good way). The story is creative and has a powerful romance and lots of magic.

‘If I’ve learned anything, it’s that power is dangerous, no matter whose hands it’s in.’ I couldn’t take my eyes off it. ‘It ruins cities, it ruins lives.’ ‘And yet, ’t’s what you do with the power which determines if it is great or not.’

I want more. Really.

That was the thing about gods. They made heroes and they made monsters.

I had such a good time with this! I was in the mood for a whimsical fantasy and this certainly delivered. There were aspects that reminded me of several classic fairy tales but with a twist and different spin on the overall story.

Killian and Ernest made a fun dynamic during their path to romance and it felt very well done.

I'm also super interested to see where we go next with this series since we connect back to the Darkmourn Universe by the end.

Disney for Adults: Romantic, Sexy, and the Richest of World Building

I’ve read and loved all of the Darkmourn Universe, but I can happily say that Prince of Endless Tides was my absolute favorite. An incredibly addictive ride that had me reading well into the wee hours of the morning.

Killian and Ernest’s love story is profoundly moving and meaningful. It starts as a slow burn, but once it gets going it burns WHITE HOT. I am also a huge fan of healing trauma through love, and that is very much what we get to witness here.

Alderson is a favorite author of mine, and he absolutely did not disappoint with POET. The mix of The Little Mermaid, Atlantis, and Greek Mythology kept me along for the ride every step of the way.

The best one of the series BY FAR. There is just such a noticeable leap in quality of this one for sure. It never felt too long and drawn out like the others in the series and the relationship felt well paced, ironic considering the story only takes place over the course of like a week. These two are my favorite couple for sure and Ernest is my fave main character. This is the only couple who's story i want to continue for real. I just need one avengers style crossover LMAO.

It is so good to see the growth of writing and storytelling over this series. This is certainly my favorite out of the Darkmourn series. There were fun and unexpected twists, and I kept wanting to know more. It's one of the better retelling I've read as well, putting a nice spin on a classic tale!

Ernest just gets worse and worse, so bratty. I want to reach through the pages to shut him up. I also do not like the relationship between the two, it’s not believable that he suddenly has no problem touching him and actually likes him. Ernest is a dick. And sure, he probably is the baby from before, but I refuse to believe that it’s enough to make them have a connection decades later.

I really really enjoyed this !! It has such an interesting spin on The Little Mermaid storyline.

There were times when I felt the story dragged a bit, and I definitely think the beginning of the romance between Killian and Ernest could have had some more substance but the ending was great.

I will definitely be reading more of Ben's work :)

I do not care for bargains, I do not care for wishes and magic. Give me one wish and it will be for you.

Prince of Endless Tides is emotional, sexy, and full of magic. It’s fresh and imaginative with all the best bits of The Little Mermaid made into Alderson’s own. Ernest and Killian gripped me with sharp claws and tentacles that would not let me go even after the last page was turned.

The romance was a bit of a slow burn, but the turnout was explosive and raw and had just the right amount of Disney charm. Our main characters carry heavy burdens, but learn to manage them by leaning on each other. I am a big fan of healing trauma through love, and Ernest and Killian have managed to scratch that itch.

My only gripe with this book is that it left me wanting more. I want to know more about the world. I want to know more about the Gods and their followers. I’d love to even just know more about Ernest and Killian and their lives before each other. All of these things are mentioned briefly, but I’d have loved if they were expanded upon. Alderson built a world that is enthralling and full of lore, and barely utilized it.

This was my first dip into the Darkmourn Universe, and I am definitely a fan now. I intend on reading the rest of the books in the series, and look forward to what Alderson will write next. If you’re like me and have never read a Darkmourn book before, I think this is the perfect starting point. I urge you to try it—you may just find a new favorite.

Book rating - 2.5 / 3

Sooooo, I didn't like it as much as I thought I was going to. I've seen this book plastered everywhere on my social media apps; it honestly looked pretty good. A retelling of the little mermaid? Hell yh, sign me up.

Until I actually read it.... it was subpar at best. Meaning it was digestible. The whole basis was pretty good, the whole gods warring with each other.... I actually liked the plot. However, it was forced as well as rushed VERY rushed.

The characters.... they were mediocore at best. killian at the beginning was good, towards the middle and the end not so much. Ernest... yh, I didn't like him one bit. Dude, he was HELLA annoying and bratty, get a grip.

No character development at all, consid3ring Ernest was still a total brat, and Killian sorta went to mush. SMH. The romance... Well, the lack thereof... it was forced. Nothing about this book screamed romance. There was no chemistry, just a full dive into codependance between the two. The only thing I actually really liked apart from the basis of the story was the scenes, but even those felt rushed and a little boring. There could have been more spice or something. It seemed rather lacklustre and tiresome like the author just couldn't be bothered.

Tbh, I should have dnf ed this book right from the start, but I had HIGH hopes in that it would get better... it didn't. The writing was also something I struggled with due to the pacing, the wording, the slow start from the beginning to the very rushed ending.

So, yh, 2.5 at the minimum, sorry.

This book just wasn't it for me. The characterization is all over the place, making it hard to enjoy either of the POV characters. Ernest in particular is quite frustrating and bratty. In addition to not being able to grasp either character, the romance is very forced. There isn't much chemistry or buildup between the two, and they become codependent very quickly. Pacing was another issue. The beginning of the book moves very slowly and doesn't really pick up until the halfway point. I didn't jive with the writing style either, which made it a particularly laborious read. While the lore is very interesting and I really wanted to learn more about this world, there's a lot of glossing over of the big moments in the second half which felt disappointing and left me with a lot of questions.

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for a review. Thank you for the chance to read the book!

Dnf. No tentacles until 78%??? Wild, weird plot??
Seriously, the writing feels like the author noticed he had too many basic words and just pulled from a thesaurus, resulting in sentences like "he howled quietly". I don't...?
We're seeing tears fall underwater. A baby only starts crying once he's in like... Render distance of the god, I guess? Conveniently so that he doesn't drown, of course 😂
The plot hints are obvious and abundant, the anxiety rep just feels... Slightly out of place?
I really want to like this book and stuck it out for the tentacles, but I kind of wanted to quit by chapter two.
Also, please do not use fiddler crabs in your sex analogies 😂😂😂

What a beautiful way to round out the Darkmourn universe. I was really impressed with Anderson’s ability to build both worlds of the Above and Below (on land and underwater). I enjoyed the clever ways in which he worked in references to the Little Mermaid. It was a nostalgic and whimsical element that did not distract from the otherwise dark and sensual tone of the story. I was a bit worried it would be too playful for an otherwise well built ominous/moody universe — it is not. It is well balanced and satisfying. The final 2 chapters had me holding my breath.

Firstly thank you to Ben Alderson & SecondSky Books for the eARC in exchange for an honest review...

Where to begin? Darkmourn is what introduced me to Ben's works and I am so glad they did. I love re-tellings & the Darkmourn books are just incredible.

As a child I grew up adoring The Little Mermaid, the stories of Atlantis, and the Greek Gods. when Ben announced Prince of Endless Tides I was so excited and he absolutely did not disappoint me.

From the prologue to epilogue and every page in between I was absolutely hooked. Reading Ernest and Killian's story was an absolute pleasure and privilege.

Trying to put into words everything I loved about this book is so hard...

Ernest - you beautiful, sassy, vibrant twink and bossy bottom. From the moment you arrived in Chapter 1 telling Hadeon what you wanted from him, the pleasure you sought out with such clear understanding of your own sexuality I adored you.

Watching Ernest's journey from beautiful boy in a gilded cage to a young man terrified of his future after being infected by a Mer to slowly growing to love the Below and Killian and learning more about himself and his powers and his Fate in a way was incredible. My only complaint is that he is keeping such a big secret from Killian at the end of the book. If or when we see them again in further Darkmourn book I do hope this has been addressed, or perhaps a short story to go over it.

Killian - You amazing, incredible Sea Witch and man. From the prologue when you pulled Ernest from the impossible tree you captured my heat and refused to let it go. I absolutely love you.

I absolutely loved that Killian had so many POV chapters in this book. While Ernest was the predominant narrator, having more moments to view Killian's thoughts, his motivations and understanding who he is and where he comes from, especially in moments when he and Ernest are separated was a joy. I honestly think Killian is my favourite character in the Darkmourn series.

The Story - I thoroughly enjoyed exploring Ire with Ernest and Killian, learning about the new land and realm, its peoples and beliefs was amazing. How or why I didn't recognize Nyssa's name from King of Immortal Tithe I'm not sure but I nearly facepalmed during the epilogue when it came back to me.

I absolutely adored the mix of Little Mermaid, Atlantis Lore, and Greek Mythology woven into this story. It made an utterly unique but somehow still recognizable story to follow. And while Ben's books always have a Happily Ever After not knowing how we were going to get there after certain things happened was exhilarating. I loved being pulled along for the ride.

The Spice! - This book starts off strong with the spice in Chapter One with Ernest and Hadeon and it's incredible. Ernest is a man who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to demand it. We love a bossy bottom in this house.

The slow burn between Killian and Ernest was amazing, I loved them both clearly wanting each other but holding back and when they finally kissed, I definitely punched the air. Their sex scenes were absolutely incredible and that tentacle scene? I had to fan myself when it was over. Holy habaneros Batman! Absolutely incredible.

That Epilogue... Wow! Such a cool an unexpected ending to the book. I love that Ben brings back other characters for cameos in his books. Love this so freaking much.

All in all this was another absolutely incredible book from Ben, cannot wait to see what comes next for Darkmourn, Ire, and wherever else he takes us!

I went into this book expecting heavy spice and not much plot but this book is so much more than that! Ben Alderson is definitely an author I'd love to read more from.

I feel like this book is marketed as an extremely spicy, smutty, almost erotic type novel when really there are only four smut scenes throughout. The plot is so strong and interesting and ties up so well and cleverly with our characters. not only that but the world itself is incredible, with the Above and Below, and the different gods that gave me a Greek mythology feel. Ben's writing is also amazing.

I loved Killian and Ernest a lot, both as individual characters and as a romantic pairing. From the get-go, they have this chemistry that's undeniable, even when Ernest thinks Killian wants to kill him. They're drawn together in a way, and it was beauty to see the development of trust turn into something more with them. Their common goal in the main plot only strengthens that, and we begin to see the lengths these two would go for one another. Of course, the smut was amazing too. You could really feel the emotion behind it, but then there was their insitiable need to just be with the other so intimately. I must say, that tentacle scene was something else!

This book as a whole was just brilliant and I have a feeling it'll be one of my favourites of the year! Every little character, every new location, every piece of information was so well thought out and written perfectly to shape into this novel and I cannot wait to see a potential future with these characters. I must say, the epilogue didn't fit the book as a standalone but it was interesting to see what will most likely be a Darkmourn Universe crossover book.

This is my first book by @benaldersonauthor and it will not be my last! From the very beginning, I was so captivated by the words and story. Ben wrote a story so wonderfully its own yet it still had little moments hinting at the original little mermaid fairytale.

I absolutely loved Ernest and Killian. Their individual growth and their relationship with each other was so beautiful to read. Both of them had such lovely, strong personalities. I loved their backstories! Every time I thought I knew the whole story, some new information was revealed.

This book was such a quick read for me. It was easy to fall into this world of mermaids, gods, and magic. And the end! Oh my gosh, I need to read the rest of the Darkmourn series now!

I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves fantasy romance or fairytale retellings!

Thank you so, so much for an ARC copy of this book! It was an absolute joy getting to read Ernest and Killian’s book.

Oooh I enjoyed that a lot! An absolutely lush fantasy world with warring gods, kings, magic, beautiful islands and a whole beautiful underwater world. I loved the nods to The Little Mermaid, which this is based on and I really enjoyed Killian and Ernest, our two MCs!

Ernest has the power to control people with his voice, and his father the king uses him in order to reign supreme over the kingdom of Ire. When he is forced to sing to the kingdom on the eve of his 27th birthday, all hell breaks loose as acolytes as the deadly Mer race attack, infecting Ernest. He then finds himself in a race to save himself and the kingdom before he fully turns into a Mer and loses his humanity.

Killian is an immortal being, tied to Karakos, god of the ocean. When he comes across freshly-turned Mer, Prince Ernest, he realises he might be able to use the Prince’s power in order to free himself from his curse.

As the two work together to try and save the Kingdom, they grow closer and Killian realises he might not need to fight a god to be free. I loved the love-hate relationship between the two and honestly, the merfolk/kraken tentacle sex? 10/10, arrest me now, because that shizzle was hot.

The only reason that this didn’t get 5* (and this is not a fault of the authors) but I just don’t like his writing… it’s just very frilly and over the top with too many metaphors and the repeats the same thing in different ways. I know some people love this very lyrical writing but I just can’t get on with it. But I pushed through because I like loved Ernest and Killian that much!!

The plot, the reimagining, the originality, the tension, the reward!!!

Only good things to say about this book. It was my introduction to Ben Alderson and BET that I will be returning to the Darkmourn universe very soon! I usually start at the beginning, but I’ve been on such a merman kick lately that this was perfect, and I devoured it. I loved that the epilogue clearly tied us into the rest of the universe without giving away any clear spoilers—beautifully done.

My one and only eye twitch was the name Ernest. It’s one of those names that I can’t take seriously, but it helped that his title “Ernest of Ire” was used frequently enough; it brought me back down from being an idiotic teenager who internally giggles at a name lmao. So if you’re like me in that regard, know that everything is fine and you’ll still adore this book!

I loved how content with m*rder everyone was, given that it was all righteous and deserved. I enjoy adult books being more than just categorized as such due to the sexual nature of a relationship within it, and the “adult” content coming into play equally throughout the story. It’s also just more realistic—if a mfer has a jaw full of dagger teeth and claws, he’s gonna go for the jugular when it’s owed, right? Right. Science. Logic. Murder. Mermen. We love it. 10/10

I was provided an e-ARC by the author and this is my honest review.

Ben Alderson has done it again. When you think Alpha of Mortal Flesh was the epitome of the series, he proves you wrong with this masterpiece of a story based on The Little Mermaid.

Ernest and Killian are two souls who are literally destined for each other. From their initial encounter, to their humorous conversations, to their care, concern and love for each other and even willing to fight Gods, to achieve one thing, to be with each other. The characters are beautifully developed, each with their own struggles and triumphs, making them relatable and endearing. Their journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and ultimately finding love is portrayed with sensitivity and authenticity.

And of course, who can forget the spice, OHH MY GOD THAT WAS HELLA INTENSE! I Squealed with joy during the spicy scenes. I shed tears during the sad scenes and shed them again, this time of happiness in the end. NOW I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT DARKMOURN BOOK!

Kudos to Ben Alderson for crafting a delightful and inspiring tale that transcends genres and leaves a lasting impression. 'Prince of Endless Tides' is a triumph in storytelling, a celebration of love that knows no bounds, and a reminder that everyone deserves their happily ever after."

This was my first book by the author, and let me say he did not disappoint.

It is rather explicit, so I would not recommend this book if you were under the age of 18 or have any discomfort towards explicit scenes.

It was well written, and it totally grasp my attention which can be difficult at times and the only reason I needed to put the book down, was to make sure I had something to eat, and had some sleep.

I really enjoyed the dark ambience of the plot, and I held my breath until the very last chapter, and I was very pleased with how it ended. Killian‘s words were so beautiful and made me swoon at how heartbreakingly delectable they were.

I also found it interesting in the epilogue how we were introduced to some of the other characters in previous books which makes me very excited to go back and read them!

I want to thank Ben for giving me the Arc read ahead of time as I really enjoyed it, and he did gain another instant buyer!
