For years this book had been my favorite, my standard for all romance books and every ideal hero. A character similar to Sebastian Vice? I already love him. When I read this book, i was very young, and I didnt grasp certain aspects of the story, I was only busy romanticizing it.
However, after some rereads, a lot of contemplation, becoming a seasoned reader and doing some growing up, I realized there were so many things that were wrong in this book. Because of this book I actually loved the age gap trope. Now? Not so much.
Sebastian Vice seems almost perfect. He is a powerful man who loves fiercely. I guess thats the best part of him. But as the days passed, this rose colored lenses that i used to view him disintegrated. I am not going into a full blown rant. I dont hate this book and I cant even if I wanted to because this book reminds me of the early days of when I started reading romance. I feel nostalgic thinking about these charcaters, of Sebastian for whom I was totally crazy about. The writing is phenomenal. Ninya Tippett is an exceptionally talented writer. But her over the top, possessive and controlling male leads are not my preference anymore. Well, except Brandon Maxfield. He is something special.
I will just mention one dialogue this book that bothers me so much now. When I first read it, it didnt bother me but now if somebody ever said that to me, I would never see that guy's face again. Sebastian and Cassandra were separated for 4 years. While Cassandra thought she lost him forever, Sebatian was plotting to get her back. He was just giving her space. He gave her 4 years to attend college and be independent. So while he was waiting to get back together with the love of his life, what does he do? He hooks up with models. Why? His justification- "I am a man and I have needs."
Fuck you and your needs. 4 years. You could not wait for this much time? And you say you love her. Yes the way he won her over was too sweet. Of course Cassandra gave in. Sweet talks, poetry and handcrafted murals, how could a girl resist? Like I mentioned, I dont hate Sebastian. There are good parts of him that I still love. But he is not for me anymore.
Also, I hated another thing in this book. Every time something happened, if Cassandra saw Sebastian in a compromising situation, she would think of the worst and literally run. As far as I remember, she ran 3 times. 3 times! Without talking or communicating. I hate when characters dont just talk it out, the problem could be resolved in minutes. So the first time she ran was when she came to Sebastian to say that she is going to marry him after she already rejected him. She came to penthouse, he was shirtless and his ex was wearing his shirt, Cassandra got one look and ran and never looked back for 4 years lol. what difference does it make? He went ahead and slept with the ex anyways. Jerk. The second incident, she saw him and the same ex talking intimately at a party. What she did? She ran. Again. Third incident, she comes to mend fences, sees two half naked women in his room and bolts again. Please just talk it out like mature adults for once. Not that I am defending Sebastian. This guy turns to sex every time Cassandra breaks up with him. Does not matter if he goes through it or not.
Anyways, that is what I remember so far because its been such a long time. This book still holds a special value in my heart, its just that I dont love it as much as I used to.
