Devotional Classics is a wonderful introduction to the essential works from spiritual leaders in six different Christian "streams" (as Richard Foster likes to call them). The differences in subject manner remind the reader of the diversity in the Body of Christ. The similarities (for there was many!) confirm the assertion that we are all "cut from the same cloth" and are working towards the same goal. Though tribalism has fettered Christian denominations from working alongside each other, Devotional Classics is a powerful tool towards bridging the different sects together into a unified front for the Kingdom of God. I would recommend this to any Christian that is open to the writings of Christians that might not agree with.
Couldn't recommend this devotional more. It contains the very best works of the most influential Christian thinkers of the past 2000 years. God has used these men and women to preserve the church at crucial moments in history. These devotionals take you into the minds of these men and women and show you the depths of their experience with God, encouraging the reader to to have the same, wonderful experiences with God. This book also exposes you to people from all different types of backgrounds (denomination, culture, ethnicity, etc.) and encourages the modern American Evangelical to expand the width and depth of the ways they experience God.
a slow but meaningful read of the devotional classics written by those who have been loving God in their everyday lives and careers. Can't help but wish that as I grow in my spiritual life I could also experience what they've written about.
I will always remember reading this devotional and I'm sure I'll come back to it and read it again. I learned so much about faith and perseverance and complete devotion to God from these ancient mothers and fathers of our faith. Their love and joy in the face of imprisonment and hardship is incredible and I was blessed to see how God cared for them and how they passed their love and knowledge on to others.
I read this book while in grad school and absolutely loved it! The book has selected readings from various writers, from mystics of old to more present day, and organized these writings into 7 streams (traditions) of Christianity. This book was truly transformative in my connection with God, myself and with others.
Serves both as a devotional, but also as a resource to a number of classics. Introduces you to over 50 different authors throughout history. Has a wide variety of different view points, histories and backgrounds. Incredibly impactful and enjoyable!
I’ve read other books by Richard Foster. He brings a refreshing view on spiritual devotion by providing selected readings of God followers of all ages. I studied this with a group and found the mutual encouragement challenging, stimulating, and rewarding. Take your time with this one.
I really loved every piece of this book. Every time I would sit down to consume another section, I would leave with even more to chew on and dwell on. I felt like I learned a new way of being present in God's presence in every aspect of my life.

Excerpts from the greatest spiritual writers in church history. Some unevenness to the selections, but nevertheless choice sections from many of the greatest writers of Christian devotion.
A good survey of some classic devotional writers. Of course, one is moved more by some than by others. I think this is a good resource. Equally, one might prefer reading a classic book by a classic author, ie. the whole book, not only excerpts.
