2 stars: it was okay
A short story (not even 200 pages) that follows a group of friends as they visit a quaint town.
The blurb makes it more sinister/mysterious than it actually reads. We spend time with the characters and their guide as they visit 2 places. After around 100 pages the story picks up and (this I liked) we get an ending I did not really predict. But no where was I gripped by suspense or was I curious about the mystery. I feel these were underwritten.
Downside was the writing style/language. Sometimes it felt like sentences were literally translated from Polish/Dutch to English, making them feel off. Sometimes there were duplicates in sentences: …looked around the shelves with curiosity and disgust; she was slightly disgusted … Sometimes things were over explained; too many words used.
For me this made reading choppy.
