The Connovan Chronicles #2

The Perfect Mistake

Rate this book
Hiring my little sister’s best friend as the new nanny for my kids? Big mistake.

Isabel is fifteen years too young, too kind, and far too attractive for this to be anything but a problem. Nannying requires her to move in, living close enough to reach out and grab... Not that I would. I’m old enough to know better.

She’s a professional ballerina recovering from an injury, and I’m the CEO of a multibillion-dollar conglomerate. She needs a job. I need a nanny. It’s a simple win-win.

Wrong. It’s sheer torture. Coming home late to find her curled up on the couch. To see her smile at me and ask how my day was. She’s beautiful, and always around, and the thoughts I’m having soon turn inappropriate.

But that life is behind me. My wife died years ago, and I can’t handle another relationship. Can’t handle the complications, the feelings, or the inevitable pain.

Even if Isabel is a temptation too sweet to resist. Kissing her is addictive… and soon I can’t keep my hands to myself or stay on my side of the penthouse.

It’s easy to forget things like age gaps and fears in the heat of passion. But us together is a mistake… even if it quickly becomes my favorite one.

Hi there! I'm Olivia.
I write romance with billionaire heroes (despite never having met one in person). They're strong, ambitious, they don't need love... until they meet the women who change their minds.

I love witty banter, smart heroines, big cities and perfectly tailored suits. You'll find all four in every one of my books! 💜

4.5 ⭐

This one surprised me by being much better than I had anticipated. Nothing shocks me more, I think, than how much I've grown to love this book.

The chemistry, tension, and buildup were palpable and off the charts. This was actually sweet, and Alec and Isabel definitely complement each other. I would've rated this a 5 ⭐ had it not been for the will-i-wont-i attitude of Alec. He has many factors to weigh and his own baggage, so there's the push and pull from his end. But he was so adorable, kind, considerate, loving, and sweet that I can't find it in me to be annoyed with him. Even though he tends to overthink things and gets stuck in his head a lot, he always always chooses Isabel. He may pull away for a day but will come begging and apologizing the next, because he can't stop thinking about her and how much he needs her in his life.

I love Isabel too; she's a strong-willed heroine who lets Alec process things in his own time. Whenever Alec felt the urge to pull away or overthinking got the best of him, Isabel would always stand her ground; she never begged for attention and would just wait patiently. But she always says what's on her mind and lets Alec know she's not okay with the situation or the things he did. She's no doormat; she's fierce but kind, patient but didn't let Alec get away with things easily, and I just really admire her personality.

As for the kids, Willa was unwelcoming in the beginning, but Sam was the opposite. I love their relationship with Alec, and I definitely see how much he loves them and vice versa. I loved it too when they finally warmed up to Isabel, and their moments together were just so cute.

Probably one of the reasons I loved this too was the fact that the late wife didn't leave any lasting impression. With the way Alec explained things, I get the impression that he married her because she came from the same circle and had the same pedigree, so it was quite expected for them to eventually get married. I'm sure he loved her in his own way because being together for almost a decade wasn't really just nothing, but the love he had for Isabel was more consuming and something he never felt before, not even for his late wife. I also appreciate that said wife wasn't mentioned too often.

I loved that there was no breakup as well. I mean, they did spend a few days apart because it's a holiday, but it wasn't really a breakup. When she got back, they talked things out, and he told her how he really felt, and she did too.

Anyway, this was freaking sweet, light, and not angsty at all. I'm so in love with Alec and Isabel. I'm so happy I got to read this; it's definitely worth it and worth recommending. ❤️

Book info:

The Perfect Mistake pulled me in with its mix of tension and tenderness 💖 A single dad, protective and careful, finding himself drawn to his sister’s best friend—it’s the kind of slow-burn that feels both addictive and real. The witty back-and-forth kept the story alive, but it was the quiet, vulnerable moments that truly stayed with me 🥹 A heartfelt, emotional romance that lingers long after the last page 💫

4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you’re going to ruin me, then, Isa, I’ll let you. There’s no one else I want to hurt for.”

The Perfect Mistake was so tender and steamy and I devoured it in less than 24 hours.

It features a Ballerina recovering from an injury but is in desperate need of a job and a billionaire CEO and a widower with two children in need it a nanny who will be his saving grace.

Oh, and the nanny has live in his fancy penthouse to look after his eight-year-old daughter and five-year-old son.

The CEO's sister who is the Ballerina's best friend suggests to her brother to hire her as she's great with kids.

You know what that means? Close proximity action!!

I loved the chemistry between Isabella and Alec and they were so sweet together! They come from different worlds but deep down they find a safe haven in each other.

They both have such a great relationship with the kids and I love that the kids weren't kept in the background because they both had dynamic personalities.

This would've been a 5-star if Alec's indecivieness didn't drive me up a wall and I wish I saw more of Isabella and Connie's friendship on page.

The spicy scenes were *chef's kiss* Isabella my girl knows what she wants and even left her kindle on Alec's nightstand after he asked her to highlight her favorite parts from her smutty books to learn what she enjoys (like YES ABSOLUTELY partners should learn what each enjoy in bed).

Also, thank you to the author for not turning Alec's first deceased wife into a toxic or bitchy woman who he was forced to be with. You don't need to smear past relationships to uplift the current one and I appreciate that.

What you can expect?
— Ballerina x Billionaire CEO
— Nanny x Single Dad (Widower)
— 15 years age gap (25 x 40)
— Fun side characters
— Close proximity (living in the same house)
— Spice: 3/5

I was super excited for this book to come out, after reading book one in the series and seeing how that heroine’s brooding grumpy older brother and the heroine’s sweet bff seemed to be attracted to each other. But… idk… there were cute parts that had me smiling and then there were repetitions aplenty regarding the hero’s hot/cold view of their relationship that just got boring.

This story started off a bit too slow for me, and I couldn’t pinpoint exactly why. I’m thinking it was because the hero wasn’t ‘grumpy’ enough maybe. He wasn’t a weak, too nice hero… but he wasn’t exactly a brooding stoic hero that we are told he is. What he was, was kind of a blah’ish nice guy that was way way way too much in his head regarding past trauma and self-imposed guilt. Such as of losing his mom as a youngster, or of suddenly losing his wife to a health issue. He is not still in love and mourning the wife, but more of being naturally traumatized of his wife suddenly dying and having a newborn infant and a toddler to take care of by himself and feeling lost. And he didn’t want to go thru losing someone again. I’m not knocking the fact that he was traumatized by these events, but he wasn’t able to move forward from them, and caused him to make incorrect assumptions regarding his new relationship with the heroine. Honestly he could have benefitted from grief therapy I think, before attempting any new relationship.

He was also obsessed about him being 15 yrs older than the heroine (he’s 40, she’s 25) and of him being convinced the heroine will wake up one day and resent him for being too old and dump him, on and on. No matter how many times she tried to convince him otherwise. Lastly, he’s convinced himself that he’s an awful father to his two children because he is a CEO and never has time for his kids and misses out on everything in their lives. Well, what I read was that he was often home by dinnertime, had most weekends off, attended a few school events…. He needed to rehash these concerns so many times it was aggravating. I actually almost DNF at 94% because I was so over his self-imposed guilt and worrying.

I did love the heroine’s calm, sweet and caring personality with the children. I loved how the author used the heroine’s love of reading smut books as a topic and how the heroine highlighted certain scenes for the hero, that was cute. I did not like how the hero turned the heroine away during their first make out session and told her to learn how to communicate what she wanted (sexually). She was shy, and he really didn’t give her a chance to verbalize anything before sending her off back to her room. It was an odd scene.

Regardless, I love this author, her writing style reminds me an awful lot like my favorite Noelle Adams. Cute, sweet and sexy stories to gobble up.

Ugh... This is why I don't like age gap tropes: It's always a fucking grown ass man not knowing what to do for the whole damn book -.- then surprise surprise what they are most worried about ends up happening and just THEN they realize "huh.. I could have done all this from the beginning???" All of this while they expect this 20-something-year-old (who most of the time doesn't have a clue what to do with her life) to play catch up with them and their mood swings.

Not once in this whole book is mentioned that this clearly traumatized man by his past experiences (the death of his mom, his wife, and lack of love/care from his dad) went to seek professional advice/help. But I guess you are busy running a company, you do you buddy.

Also are you meaning to tell me this 40 year old man, kissed her one day and the next day was like: "sorry that happened, it won't happen again", and it clearly happens again and again, and by the third time he is pulling away AGAIN??? Are you like a fuckboy in college or something???? Aren't you 40 sir????

15 year age gap??!?? I'm asking again, is this a gringo thing that I don't know about??? Do people really fantasize about being with someone that's starting to have grey hair?? Or is this some sort of daddy issues???

This time (cause I tried other age gap books) I wasn't thaat mad/weirded out by their ages, but my question is: Is it always necessary to make the main characters less than 26??? Why can't she be 28? 29? That is still an age gap, she is still in a critical stage of her life, but not in the FIGURING HER LIFE OUT part that is your early 20s!!!!

The only thing I'll give this book, is that the main protagonist had some back bone, and fought back for what she wanted, and also that she didn't wanna live with him right away, at least that was some critical thinking on her part.

Will I read the next one? Sure, even tho there's an age gap AGAIN, cause I'm still set on finding a good age gap book! So we'll see🙄

He is desperate to find a nanny for his children, so he decides to hire his sister's best friend to be the nanny. She is a professional dancer recovering from an injury, and you have to be stupid to not realize the connection between them.

I love books with the theme of a single father and protector. I really liked the characters, and the book was easy for me to read because of how addictive it was. I enjoyed everything in this book, especially the extra chapters, because they made me happy reading them.

I'm really a little surprised because the age difference usually makes me uncomfortable, but this book didn't make me uncomfortable. I loved the characters. I feel like the author knew how to write this story, and the direction she gave them was good.

Thanks to the author for the copy of this book

Surprisingly lovely. After injuries sideline her career as a ballerina Isabel is lucky to find a well-paid live-in nanny gig with her BFFs brother, a billionaire CEO who is widowed with two grade school children. Things go where one expects, but not in the way one expects (or at least not in the way I expected.) Alec (the aforementioned billionaire) is trying to run a company and be a good father and good employer (his father was only concerned with the company) and he is struggling. He is convinced that his grumpy old self, with a company to run and two kids to parent, will stall Isabel's trajectory. He is in love and will take all he can get of her but does not want to weigh her down. She puts up with his inability to commit for far too long and settles for the scraps (which include great sex, an adoring protector, and a private driver and cook -- so they are admittedly good scraps.) Not perfect, but really good and filled with glowy moments. My second Olivia Hayle book, and I just loaded a third onto my Kindle.

It’s 2am and I just finished this and I’m starting an I hate Alec club because Fuck This Man!!!

Why is he acting like 25/40 is the biggest age gap there’s ever been in a couple. Why is he being a whiny annoying bitch for an entire book about everything. Make up your fucking mind, he flip flopped on Isabelle over and over again. He kept saying she has so much to live for, she deserves better, he can’t give her what she deserves and I’m just like ISABELLE YOU ARE TOO GOOD FOR THIS SHIT! Fuck him honestly, to listen to his repetitive bullshit was annoying as fuck. And it takes til just after 90% of the book for him to pull his head out of his ass and go all in with her and admit his feelings. Just no, he’s not worth it. Isabelle could and should do much better than Alec.

Of the 2 stars I gave this, one is for Isabelle and one is for the kids.

Safe no ow/om drama. Its the dead ex wife trope though 🙄

The Perfect Mistake —

"I want you to keep loving your life… and I want us to start building one together."🥹

"You are the most beautiful, unexpected, kindest woman I've ever met, and I'm so glad you danced into my life. If you're going to ruin me, then, Isa, I'll let you. There's no one else I want to hurt for."

some tropes
🩰 nanny and single dad
🩰 she falls first
🩰 he falls harder
🩰 age-gap (15 years)
🩰 best-friend's brother

First of all, I wanna thank Olivia and all her team for the opportunity to read this book beforehand. I feel very grateful.

I really enjoyed this book. I love the nanny trope and I think it was really well done, it felt very real. Isabel, our main character, had to earn the kids' trust and slowly build a relationship with them and I loved that. It was not an "instant love" with them, and I loved how they became comfortable with her.

Regarding Isabel, I LOVED HER. She is fierce and determined, and even though her life took a massive turn and she had to give up on her dream, she started slowly organizing her life and not settle for anything less that made her happy.

I liked how things between her and Alec progressed, and how she was always straight forward on what she wanted. Don't get me wrong, Alec's communication skills were good, but Isabel didn't hold back on him, regarding their relationship and how she wanted to handle things, but also regarding his children and advice on how to be better for them, without being disrespectful to him.

The love they shared for one another, Alec and Isabel, was beautiful to read and the spice was great, and all the little moments they shared and the love in between the lines, especially Alec's concern with her and just supporting her on all her decisions. Just spending time together, watching a TV show together like a normal couple and making company to each other.

However, what made me angry was Alec's "hot and cold" attitude towards Isabel when she wanted to be with him. All I wanted to do was smack him, and just scream at him that SHE LOVES YOU AND YOU LOVE HER AND YOUR KIDS LOVE HER. That was the only thing that I didn't enjoy as much, and he redeemed himself in the love (we love big love declarations <3).

Overall, I enjoyed this book and their story, and I love Olivia's writing and can't wait for the next book!

„I don’t accept that reasoning. You don’t get to say that you’re pulling away because you don’t want to hurt me. We all hurt in life. That’s inevitable, but we do get to choose. That’s what I did for years. I chose the pain and soreness, all so I could experience the joy of that life, too. And maybe I’m willing to do the same thing with you. Maybe I’m willing to accept the risk of getting hurt… but I don’t think you are. […] I’m done being in places where I’m not wanted, or working to get someone’s approval. If you’d rather not try something real, but stay safe and miserable, then fine. That’s your choice, Alec.”

there was something missing in this one, so... it's like a 2.75 🌟 read for me.

the dead wife was brought up too many times to my liking.

what i loved for sure was the „i’ll show you my kindle” plot thing. it was really fun. and the way it was used for the love confession scene — that was sweet. i really liked isabel’s character, but alec was having too many doubts (mainly about their age gap!) all the damn time and, i hate to say it, but it was giving they-are-going-to-break-up-after-some-time.

i really like olivia’s books; her writing style is so easy to read, but this book definitely wasn't my favorite. which is a shame, since i liked best enemies forever so much. but you win some, you lose some.

“First of all I just want to thank the lovely oliviahayle for giving me the opportunity to read this arc! It was honestly the best book I’ve read do so far in 2024!!

It was sweet! It was spicy! It was everything I want in a book! The love and chemistry between all of the characters is UNMATCHED! 🥹🫶🏻 Alec is such a sweetheart! But also such a broken guy he can’t handle his feelings for Isabelle because he believes all the odds are against them but his love for her smile, laugh, and the way she loves his kids makes him love her even more 🥹💕 (also Isabelle is very convincing 😂)

Isabelle is such a beautiful soul I can’t begin to explain it! The love for dancing makes me feel so connected to her and I understand her so much! The way she falls and falls hard for Alec makes me believe in love 💕
She gives up everything to be with Alec and she would do it over and over again
She gets all his doubts and shoves them aside to show him how much he deserves to be loved 🥹”

“The relationship between these two was so beautifully written it makes me hope that one day I’m gonna be loved that way 💕 and also THE AGE GAP WOOOO IT WAS SO GOOD!! I really think it made the book! And it wasn’t creepy! And it’s hard to find that in romance books!”

ARC Review
This is a love story about two people starting over, chasing new dreams, finding happiness after loss, and making the choice to be together.

The spice is excellent. I love how Isabel’s Kindle reads are used to build that aspect of their relationship. However, some of my favorite moments are the quiet ones where Isabel and Alec just hang out.

I truly love the character growth outside the romance. The relationship Isabel builds with Alec’s children is sweet. Isabel’s friendship with Connie is lovely. Alec has a few interactions with his new brother-in-law that are quite nice, too. Both characters deepen the relationships they have with siblings. I really enjoyed this aspect of the story.

This story features single dad/nanny, billionaire , age gap, best friend’s brother, and she falls first, he falls harder.

The Perfect Mistake is book 2 of The Connovan Chronicles. While it can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend the series. I loved Connie & Gabriel’s story in book 1, Best Enemies Forever. I am looking forward to Nate’s story in book 3.

ARC Review!!!

First I want to thank Olivia for allowing me to read this book!!

This book was honestly so good it was a wonderful read and the story was so well written and heartwarming Olivia really did a good job with the book.

Single dad, nanny, age gap, she falls first he falls harder are all tropes I really like so that just made the story much better.

The characters were well written and it was easy to connect with them and understand what they were going through☺️

Hi there!
Recently I had the pleasure to be part of the ARC team for this romance book that keep me hooked this past few days so thank you to Olivia and her team for the opportunity 🫶

The story revolves around Isabel and Alec, where Isabel takes on the role of a nanny for Alec's children. The slow build trust between Isabel and the kids added a touch of authenticity to the narrative, and I particularly appreciated the strong-willed nature of Isabel's character (she often exuded a greater sense of maturity than Alec in approx. 80% of the situations, despite him being 15 years her senior). Her determination and refusal to settle for anything less than her own happiness was something to admire.

I really enjoyed Alec's children. Their vibrant personalities, curiosity and mischievous antics were depicted authentically, capturing the essence of genuine childhood.

One standout element that truly resonated with me was (as I said) Isabel. The resilient protagonist, impressed me with her tenacity even while dealing with an injury, she remained steadfast in pursuing her goals, refusing to settle for less.

Alec's employees and family were something I really liked. Despite their different personalities, I found myself intrigued by the way they seamlessly fit into the story's dynamic like cogs in a clock's mechanism and I'm eager to see if any romantic sparks ignite among them in the future 🤭

Connie, Alec's sister and Isabel best friend, was one of my faves. Despite not being a main character, we see a lot of her and we discover a strong woman who is not only a good friend but also a great adviser.

However as I enjoyed the book, there were certain aspects that left me with mixed feelings. Alec's "hot and cold" attitude towards pursuing a relationship with Isabel became a recurring theme that, at times, felt a bit repetitive. The internal conflict of "I can't be with you" from the MMC, started to wear thin, making the story less dynamic for me. I understand Alec's conflict, grappling with age differences, societal opinions, guilt over his late wife.... But it occasionally overshadowed the potential for him and Isabel to blossom as a couple.
Moreover, while the chemistry between Alec and Isabel was palpable, I found that the pacing of their romance left me wanting more. The slow burn took its time to evolve into a romantic connection, and when it did the intimate moments overshadowed the othe facets of their connection.

Despite this considerations, the novel, even as a non-native English speaker, kept me hooked.
The palpable chemistry, tension, and attraction between the MC and the sweet and charming secondary characters made me love it so I really recommend you to give it a try ☺️

4.5⭐

“You are the most beautiful, unexpected, kindest woman I’ve ever met, and I’m so glad you danced into my life. If you’re going to ruin me, then, Isa, I’ll let you. There’s no one else I want to hurt for.”

When i read this line, the first thing that came to my mind was the song Hoax (by Taylor Swift) because it has a line that goes, "Don't want no other shade of blue but you, no other sadness in the world would do". and i felt that's what Alec meant when he said this.

I think what i loved the most about this book is the clear communication between the Mcs. I didn't feel like i was reading fiction and all that was happening in the book was not unrealistic and made sense. The author's writing style was one of the things i loved the most and yes, absolutely loved the way she drafted Alec's fears. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. A very good read i would totally recommend.
