L'Homme qui rit
Tout le monde connaît Victor Hugo et sa capacité à créer des univers où le sordide côtoie le sublime. Mais tout le monde ne connaît pas encore Fernando De Felipe ; cela ne devrait plus tarder.
Après deux séries très remarquées par les lecteurs de BD ( Museum et Black Deker ), la publication de cette très libre adaptation de L'Homme qui rit devrait convaincre les derniers sceptiques de l'incommensurable talent de cet artiste.
Son trait vivant et fluide et ses couleurs audacieuses font de ce directeur artistique de l'université de Barcelone l'un des plus intéressants auteurs espagnols du moment.
Mélangeant les techniques et les styles avec l'originalité qui le caractérise, De Felipe pousse e ncore plus loin les limites de la BD dans cet album envoûtant et sombre.

Hugo was so DARK.
This was my second trip through this particular tragedy and it didn't hold ANYTHING back visually like the Classics Illustrated adaptation. While CI did a marginally better job with the details this was dominant aesthetically. It's full of Corben-style grotesques and he's the only author that I've seen with such a close replication of his style. Without doubt, his guy has his own look, but there are times when a panel is CorbenCopied.
To be clear:
The art is tremendous and the adaptation is clear- it conveys enough to get the entire scope of the book in the amount of pages that he allotted.

Es una gran adaptación de la novela de Víctor Hugo, en clave de cómic, de Fernando De Felipe. Se aprecia su dominio de la narrativa visual, construyendo un relato casi cinematográfico y con un gratificante gusto estético. Una obra grata de apreciar.

Personalmente me gusta, pero no es para todo el mundo. No he leído la novela de Hugo, pero el cómic es tremendamente pesimista y un poco macabro. Quizás se podía haber alargado un poco la parte final. El dibujo es feísta, pero igual me parece que encaja con la historia.

A real piece of art!
This is one of the most touching books I've ever read in my life! The descriptions are of an extraordinary richness whilst the monologues abound in sufferings told by character. It was extremely difficult for me to read it without imagining those harsh times that the main character was put through.
The life of a child escaped from death as if by luck or rather curse. Grown up in misery and poverty by a merchant of kids, he is disfigured on purpose in order to become a future buffoon (and become part of this miserable industry) who will entertain and make laugh people from the royal court.
I strongly recommend this book! You will discover and rediscover for yourself, once again, the talent, genius of HUGO!

I wanted to read a graphic story - this was a very short short version of the story. I doubt very much that someone reading this book without knowledge of the full story would be able to make much sense of it. Still, it was an interesting way to present it.

May 28, 2019Wonderful telling of a dark classic. One wonders why we dont see more movies about this. The art was suitably dark and compelling. This is one of those books you keep out on the table.
