I just knew that witch of a queen would ruin her afterglow! Man, this book had so many ups and downs. The first book was basically getting to know the princes, pretending to be a squire boy, hiding herself in a servants uniform to stay safe from her father, the god of Ruin. They are at an academy, and all magical women are entered into the bride trials. All the princes are in a race to find their true mate and breed the “Prophesized One “ that will rule as the king of the realm and to bring magic back to the land.
2nd book is Barbie getting her feet back into the game being a woman, she’s really like a woman on a wrecking ball. She doesn’t answer straight questions, evades until she distracts them, then runs away if she can. She has a fight with Sy. Sy is also Barbie, but they change into different forms when one being is in control. Sy has always had Barbie’s back, and took the pain that Barbie could never deal with. Sy fell for the fae Prince Rowan, and does the dirty outside or in the wild wood, so Sy can feed her power. Barbie was a bit rude to Sy being a 3rd wheel, and it hurt Sy so of course they clashed and fought. It broke me to read them so at odds with each other. Sy is like the devil on Barbie’s shoulder and Barbie is the angel on Sy’s shoulder when she’s in charge. The 3rd book I found is about longing. Barbie has realized she’s starting to fall for the Prince of Chaos, Killian but he’s taken already. It doesn’t matter that she can touch killian without burning (thanks to Queen liliths curse in Killian). Pucker the guardian ghost of the house of Chaos made a deal to be her familiar. As annoying as he was, he came through for her every single time. I hated reading about him possibly being wiped from existence for taking the hit meant for Barbie from a mean girl fight where her core power burst out, and singes Lady Medea to nothing. Then killian is called to see the king as Lady Medea was his step sister, from the step mother who married his dad the king. Now that he’s gone, the first bride trial is out and instead of a Culling like expected, they are to drink a potion, the color in the crystal ball the evil Druid has, marks if they passed or failed. Once it’s Barbie’s turn, there’s a pill or a seed at the bottom of her cup, and she tries to refuse l, gets knocked over and the Druid makes it so the liquid forced itself down her throat. Turns out it was a seed from heaven, harvested in hell. It pretty much knocks her out. All Hell breaks lose, the princes are trying to make she the Druid doesn’t take the “evil incarnat” to their secret layer while they try to move her back to house of chaos. Angels and demons show up and join the fight to get to Barbie. In the end, Barbie’s core power comes out and flattens any rebel, leaving her friends and academy students and staff alone. That’s when more angels and demons show up, and a portal opens with killian flying through as his dragon. The princes join their powers now that they are all there and kills all the bad guys. At this point though, poor Barbie is unconscious and the evil queen betrothed to Barbie’s Mate (she hasn’t realized it yet) and tries to trick her into eating gods ambrosia, if she did she would be stuck in the underworld. She refuses and then almost gets sucked into the queens gaze and forgets who she was. She remembers thankfully but damn, this writing was amazing. I was hunched down, trying to read as fast as possible because I needed to know what happened next. Of course it ends with Prince Killian being told of who she is before she could tell him. Way to destroy us with that ending. I sure hope Killian doesn’t care, but I assume it will be a big deal. Hopefully Meg comes out with the new one earlier than expected. I need to know what happens next!

I haven’t really looked too hard, but I don’t know how many books are in this series. The next book is in August or September. There is no indication that this is the penultimate or the last in the series. I think there’s still a lot more of the storyline to finish but I certainly can be wrong.
Anyway, Barbie keeps getting hijacked in one way or another. Underhill’s wild magic is what usually helps to save her. Lilith is horrible and by the end of this one has come to visit Killian, and has brought the Oracle. Not good…
Now waiting for the next in the series. Recommended.
This series continues to be arguably terrible, the writing is atrocious, I cannot stand the main character, it's like Barbie is trying to be Deadpool and that snarky, witty, powerful person with a heart of gold but it comes across like reading a middle schooler who just discovered sex. I have continued to read this story despite struggling with the writing style. The premise behind it is so cool and really interesting. but I don't think I can do it anymore. I don't want to read book 4.
I finished this book in one day (in between entertaining two kids) and every time I had to put it down I just groaned internally! Can’t wait for the next book but SEPTEMBER?! I’m dying!!
Okay still like it but it’s dragging on. She’s still funny but more needs to happen. When I finished this book I was wondering if I could skip to book 5 because shit didn’t happen in book 3
The story is now picking up the pace. I think that things are starting to unfold and the action makes this book stand out from the rest. However, an issue I have with this series is the pacing and also Barbie is a very inconsistent character for me. One moment she's "pick me" and then it suddenly switches to her being a bad ass. I think there could have been more development in the world, the characters, and even the antagonists of this story. We don't really know them as well, and even Pucker gets more limelight then they did. I wish we got to connect with Sy/Barbie. Their fight and little make-up chat felt forced and ingenuine. I also think that the princes need more depth, and even her odd relationships with her so-called "Friends" at the academy. It was just one person after the other where Barbie screws something up and challenges them and suddenly they're all about her. I think that the dialogue is clunky. Barbie is really inconsistent with the "sir"s and the sudden switch of proper vs casual and I think it takes away from the focus of the story if I'm trying to understand why all of the sudden she is acting all goody goody proper when other times she's just like "I don't care, I'm a big badass" and yada yada yada. It's also just so unserious. Like, it's laughable at how over the place this all is and I'm trying my best to be open to it because I don't know if it just the way I'm interpreting everything, but it really is immature.
My hope for the future books is that we get more time with each scenario and actually take the time to see things develop. Drop little hints, different interactions that give readers clues or misleading information that help develop the antagonist rather just being like "Oh suddenly this person knows about me but how" and "oh no, Ruin just got a peek at me through a crystal ball but no one else saw it". Things like that could use a little bit more insight and have Barbie process those things. It doesn't have to be some grand event, but I think pacing and consistency and depth is what this series is lacking. Even the relationship between Sy and Rowan don't make sense, they banged like once or twice and power aside, there's nothing else really going on there. He's just whipped for her pvssy, which is really just an illusion of her/Barbie's power when it comes down to it. But regardless, I'm invested in this series and will continue to read it as the book come out, it's just hard to get past those big things that stick out to me. Everything else is cool, the world building, the concepts of magic, and all of that. It's just the execution of it all is not what it could be.
Prepare to be whisked into a world shrouded in danger and desire with Meg Xuemei X's latest paranormal romance, House of Shifters and Smoke. This sizzling story promises a journey filled with forbidden love, ruthless power plays, and a hero who teeters on the edge of villainy, Killian.
Killian stands on the precipice of an unwelcome union that will bind him to a mighty queen and secure his rule over two potent kingdoms. However, his heart beats to a different rhythm, the soft, compelling pulse of Barbie, the new girl who has unwittingly ensnared his dark, tormented soul. Amidst looming threats and the sinister machinations of the court, Barbie is a beacon of light, one that Killian yearns to claim but at a dangerous cost.
The character development is exquisite, with Barbie emerging as more than just a damsel amidst the chaos. She is a symbol of resilience and potential power. The interactions between her and the rival heirs add complexity and heartache to the plot, making the reader root for her triumph.
House of Shifters and Smoke does more than tell a story of love. It weaves a spellbinding tale of what it means to choose the heart over the crown and the personal sacrifices that come with such a choice. Meg Xuemei X has set the stage for a breathtaking series filled with passion, betrayal, and the quest for one's true destiny. It is a must-read for fans of dark romance and paranormal intrigue who enjoy their tales with a hefty dose of heartache and fire.
But if you don’t like cliffhangers, this probably won’t make you happy! There are so many wonderful things about this book, but I won’t spoil the surprises. A couple of mini points that I guess could be seen as small spoilers: 1) the speed dating was a perfect representation of the real deal, in my opinion, and that’s what made it so funny, and 2) I sincerely wish the main characters would stop beating around the bush, quit letting others determine what they are going to do, and look out for their own best interests more!
All that being said, I am torn between wanting to rush into the next book and putting it off because book 5 won’t be out until next year! I want to see how the twist we are left with will play into the next book, while fearing that it is moving towards wrapping everything up in book 5. I have truly loved the originality of this series and I hope that the next two books continue to live up to the story thus far. Hopefully it will continue for more than the books I know about because I have really become invested in seeing how these characters grow and evolve, even beyond the original endgame that was set up.
You did it again!! OMG! I loved this book as well as the other two! But the ending, the ending!! You finally gave me what I wanted and then just made my heart drop and stomped on it!! The banter was hilarious if not more so than the first two, which I loved. I swear Barbie is one my favorite characters of all times. She really gives you a run for your money haha! I absolutely love all the Princes with how they interact with each other and their protectiveness/ possessiveness. They definitely had me rolling a good bit! The fight scenes were well done, you did have me at one point where I was yelling “no this can’t be happening”! Just overall an easy, hilarious, keeps you on your toes, fun, stomps on your heart a bit, great book! I cannot wait for what is yet to come in the next book! August/ September cannot come fast enough!!
I was really into this series that I couldn’t wait for the next installment. But as I was reading this I kept looking at the pages and lack of story growth I was apprehensive … another book in which things don’t happen. The two star review was also because as the story grows the MFC becomes more and more annoying. At first her banter was cute but I found myself skipping pages just to get by her nonsense. The chicken and the egg?? Come on 😩 Then what is Sy’s purpose like I just don’t get it.. I don’t see this story getting any better than the first book. It’s too … babble babble… This author is kind of known for that though. After reading this series, I read her other novels and thinking “She really makes all her characters talk like that.” 🤢 I’m still gonna read the next one. Hopefully it’s enough time to get over my aggravation.
Your captivating narrative has reignited my passion for reading, transporting me back to the magical moments of my childhood when I would lose myself in epic sagas like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. This installment of the series has been an absolute page-turner, compelling me to prioritize the story over my daily responsibilities. From the moment I brewed my morning coffee and prepared breakfast for my daughter, I found myself completely absorbed in the world you've crafted. The immersive storytelling has rekindled my love for fantasy, making me eagerly anticipate the next book. Even my meal preparation has been strategically planned around maximizing reading time—a crockpot dinner ensuring minimal interruption to my literary journey. Each page promises another thrilling brain adventure, and I am utterly spellbound..
My biggest issue with this series and I’ve had it before with this author but DNF’d that series is the FMC. I find her dialogue annoying. The FMC is my least favorite character in this series. The conversations she has with other characters are somewhat cringe and I still find it hard to accept the whole “little bob” storyline and the name Barbie. The good thing about this book is I really enjoy the overall plot. I find the powers and world intriguing. There was little happening in the middle of this book that I started to lag. It finally got better at the end and made up for the middle but I still struggle with this series. I really do prefer all side characters.
How much more pain does she have to go through to finally have love?
The story is amazing. I only find the change of her pet name a little annoying but without giving too many details. This book has amazing spice and a story, but it's a lot to keep up with. There are almost to many vilians and not enough fire between fml and mml. They don't get REAL spicy until the end. Sy obviously has spice the entire time. I honestly with they could both get their happiness, but this doesn't seem like one of those stories. I was sad to get to the end of this and find the next is still not out. I look forward to it and honestly don't see it being the last book because these stories are short for novels, and there are a lot of loose ends to finish.
I devoured this series on a cross country trip. Devoured. I couldn’t get through it fast enough. I will admit that had I known it was not compete- I would have waited for the last book to be released. I’m devastated that I am left on a cliffy on book 5. 😩.
At any rate- since I inhaled five books at once. I’m writing one review. I started out and my first thought was “wtf is this??” This is a new to me author, and I jumped in having no idea what to expect. What I got was a heroine in situations and with dialogue that was silly, sometimes stupid, often ridiculous, and yet kept me reading to see wtf was going to happen next. And I’m so glad I kept going. The journey was definitely ridiculous, but absolutely worth it. I am so glad this was my first exposure to this author. And I would highly recommend the audiobook. ::chefs kiss
Wow!! *chef’s Kiss*. I have not listened to book 1 or 2 but that doesn’t stop me from becoming INVESTED in these characters (said in high falsetto voice)! OH MY Gosh I loved it sooo much! The story line, the world building and of course those wonderful characters. This has ALL those magical paranormal creatures that are so fun and add craziness to stories. I look forward to the next to see what can and will happen.
I listened to this on audio. Victoria Mei does an exceptional job narrating this one. There are a ton of characters in here that she voices and I am always WOWED at her talent.
I thought incorrectly that this was a trilogy. But I’m okay with that because the adventure is still ongoing. But I want to know what happens next!
Barbie is making friends and enemies. This is getting more and more exciting by the minute. And Killian is what dreams are made of.
If you want to lose yourself in a fantasy world like no other then this series has you covered. Humour, hot sex and what the heck just happened situations through out. Meg keeps you on your toes. Victoria Mei is again absolutely fabulous with creating distinct voices and characters in anything she does. Bravo ladies. Bravo! Now just bring on the next one asap! ♥️
Victoria Mei is the real star here!! Her narration of all the characters is nothing short of fabulous. She has been consistent from book 1 with her portrayal of Barbie and Sy and even the heirs!
Killian and Barbie get closer, the plot against Barbie gets more sinister and Sy is back !
I'm a little annoyed that this ended in yet another cliffhanger because of where it ends off. Also how is Sy getting her HEA if Barbie is with Killian? Where is this storyline headed? Will this be a reverse harem situation? That seems the only way this can end.
This reader needs answers! Well done Meg.. you hooked me good!
Okay I had to write a review because just WOW ! This series is sooo freaking good! I am utterly in love with Sy/Lil Bob/Barbie ! She is absolutely hilarious & so kickass ! I cannot wait for the next book in the series ! I am legit panting for it lol! Miss Meg Xuemei X you are now officially becoming an author I am going to binge on! This work is beautiful & is now in my top 5 series that I am obsessed with! I cannot wait to check out your other series now! Thank you so much for writing this masterpiece & inviting all of us readers into a wonderful world full of magic, spice, and everything angsty & delicious!
Can’t explain exactly why I love this series but I like it more and more with each book. I hope there are at least 5 more books on the way, LOL. I do hope that Barbie starts to speak a little more grown up now that she has “experienced” life, hint hint as sometimes she sounds more like a 9 year old that a 20 year old but I love everything else. How it gets tense, then I just laugh and the characters are great. Would love to read more about some of the others like Cade, what is his story so hopefully that is all to come because these characters are awesome. Great job.
All the heirs start working together against the Druid- cammie and Barbie’s relationship strengthens, huge fight between Cy and Barbie but resolved… everyone is getting together… bridge battle and her black fire emerges… she almost looses her ghost familiar, she is taken by the people in the crimson tide… Queen Lilith tries and succeeds almost at hijacking her mind… they are finally together and guess who shows up at the door- Queen Lilith… and the oracle looking for the God of Ruin’s daughter 👀 running to next book!

This is a great story. I enjoy that there is more than one big fight in the story. It always keeps you on your toes of what else could happen. I'd also like to note that the main character is hilarious. So many times, I would pause to just laugh at what I just read. For those looking for a funny story to read for fun. I recommend this, but please note it does have spicy sense.
You’re killing me, girl you really are. I can’t handle it. These are my favorite books ever and you keep leaving me on these cliffhangers then having to wait months before I know what happened again. It’s not very nice and I’m not very happy with this. I think that you should get it all done at once and then let it out, otherwise you’re giving me gray hair wrinkles and a lot of stress, but please don’t stop writing because I absolutely love it!!!
I devoured this book in a night. I love Barbie and her crazy ride of an adventure. It is never a dull moment and you never know what is going to pop out of her mouth. Laugh-out-loud moments non-stop! Killian’s possessiveness shined in this book and I loved every second of it. That cliffhanger is a doosey - but I wouldn’t want anything less. I cannot wait to read the next book!!! #underdogsforbarbie
Again, absolutely ridiculous. I didn't like this instalment as much as the last one though. Still, laughed my ass off during some scenes, but everything had a rushed feel to it. Maybe the other books were like that as well, I can't remember.
It really does seem our darling chaos prince is end game for barbie and I couldn't be happier. Let's just hope Lilith will disappear through some black hole ASAP.
Really I liked and disliked the same. things as book 1 and 2. The story itself with all of the magic, God of Ruin, forced marriage all of that stuff is interesting. But Barbie is getting really annoying and the lack of progression is getting frustrating. I really feel like books 1-3 probably could have been condensed into 1, there was a lot of repetition. I may read the next book when it's ready because I really do want to see what happens when Barbie's dad shows up.
4.5/5⭐️ HOW DO THESE KEEP GETTING BETTER! 😵 this was by far my favorite book in the series! And the cliffhanger 🤯🤯🤯 I’m so excited to read book 4 🙏🏼 Killian just keeps getting better and better. ❤️❤️❤️ I hope that Him and Barbie end up together because if not I will loose my mind! This was another fast and fun read! Less than 300 pages. I felt the plot kicked way up this time and it was just so good!
I still enjoy the storyline, but that’s about it. The relationship development is LACKING. Though the two FMCs share a body, they are two different minds with two different love interests. With one mind being more dominant than the other, you would figure that that would mean more opportunities for development with her mate? Nope.
While I want to have hope for this series, I’m starting to worry everything is going to be superficial for the rest of the series.
I did feel like this book was a b it of a gap filler. Not as much was learned in this book. I am still confused by the relationship with all the princes and Barbie. Also each book is named after a Prince but I don't see them strongly feature. Am I missing something? There was a subtle change in the shifter Prince I is that the only reason the book is house of shifters and smoke in this one?.
