On the verge of high school graduation, eighteen-year-old Jessie should be revving up for a big world and bright future. That is, if she can see beyond her beloved mountains in north Georgia. That’s just when a dark-haired stranger named Cade reveals possibilities that are exciting, inspiring, and sometimes more than a little unnerving.
Winter Wish is the heartwarming young adult novel that weaves together romance, mystery, and drama, as Jessie learns that sometimes the best way to care for those she loves is to take better care of herself. With the weight of her mother’s death on her shoulders, Jessie finds herself struggling to carve out a future for herself. She can’t imagine ever leaving home, or tearing herself from her family, a devoted boyfriend Sean, and a needy friend Camille.
After Jessie makes a wish on a star to help her find her way, she meets a mysterious young man named Cade. At the same time, her lone mountainside treks place her in the path of a menacing man who seems intent on silencing her. As Jessie confronts past demons and new threats, her wish upon a star may make all the difference in the world.

Winter Wish follows high school senior, Jessie, as she faces the transition of leaving high school and the world she has grown accustomed to. She is forced to deal with the reality that her world is changing and no matter how hard she resists, it is inevitable. In the mist of all this change, Jessie's safe little world is being threatened by real danger as well when she ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It is a compelling story, that everyone can relate to. We all have to face change as we transition into adulthood and Minor captures that perfectly. You can't help but become invested into Jessie as she is a realistic and honest reflection of this transition that everyone faces. Even if Jessie's journey isn't the path you chose to take, it is likely that your journey will be paralleled by one of the other characters. Minor did an amazing job at creating characters that do reflect the world and are not just there to occupy space and feed lines to the main character. They play an intricate part in Jessie's story, but moreover, these characters are revealing their own journeys as well. I loved that this book was not just about Jessie, as teenagers our world was never just about us, we took on everyone's drama as well and made it our own.
It is an easy read! It is comprised of short chapters!
I'm not usually one to be drawn into American teenage fiction but I enjoyed this. Fans of the genre will not be disappointed by Dixie Minor's novel. The characters are well drawn and the plot engaging.
Incidentally it is only the second book I've read that is set in Georgia. The baddies are not quite as bad as the ones in the other book (Deliverance) but it seems to pay to stay in the built up parts of the state all the same.
Very sweet book, and interesting to read as an adult, to be reminded about what the "adult" world looked like through the eyes of a sheltered high school senior. Some of the conflicts had me screaming at Jessie to react in a certain way...but that was the grownup in me thinking. Jessie was very believable when I reminded myself of what I was thinking/doing/believing at that age!
Author, Dixie Minor, has a gift for making her characters come visually alive on the pages of her first book, Winter Wish. Written for young adults, it is an enjoyable read for an adult audience. I look forward to reading more for this gifted author.
Lighthearted story about a senior in high school and how she deals with change. This would be a great story for a teenager who is thinking of the future. Minor writes a very readable story!
I haven't read a book this good in a long time .It just goes to show you that you can find a good book outside your usual books you read.Jesse's character was so down to earth, normal teenager. She had suffered a great loss when her mother died but lived in a small town that kind of wrapped everyone up in a cocoon. There is a lot of other things going on that make this book hard to put down.I am sure I will read this book again.
