One of the most courageous and dedicated of the British POW escapers during the Second World War was Warrant Officer (WO) George Grimson, who, with his fellow non-commissioned officers (NCOs) of the Royal Air Force (RAF), was imprisoned at the notorious camp at Hedekrug in the Baltic. Here fired a determination to defy the Germans, the NCOs gave their captors no peace. From the foolhardy and disastrous escapes of their early imprisonment their plans developed in sophistication and ingenuity. The inspiration behind their attempts was George Grimson. Grimson himself finally succeeded in the most daring escape of all - and went on to create an escape route through enemy country with safe houses from Heydekrug to Danzig.
The author (John Dominy), himself also a POW and an eye-witness to the Grimson escape drama has written an unforgettable tribute to those remarkable and heroic days.
