I’m not sure why this anthology exists except as a money grab.
This author has taken a bunch of Christmas-esque novellas from some of her previous series’ and published them together here. I have read none of the previous series and found most of these extremely difficult to connect with.
My advice is to go find The Ice Duchess and read that one and disregard all the rest. That is the only novella in this that was any good. I have broken down my review below, separated for each book, but overall I was not impressed by this and really did not like this author’s writing style. This is contemporary romance dressed up in historical clothes and for the most part the settings were badly done. None of the characters really behaved as they should and society allowed them to with no repercussions. It didn’t make historical sense and none of the Christmas traditions were really well displayed in any of these. I like historical romance set at Christmas for all the traditions and coziness, this had none of that. I’m highly disappointed by this anthology, it was not well thought out.
Book 1 - Chasing the Duke - 3 stars
The writing in this was good but the story was underwhelming. An extremely unoriginal tale of a Duke with PTSD and a lonely childhood, who pushes the heroine away for her own good. She pines for him, she chases him, her relatives connive and manipulate to get them together, and he finally succumbs. Add to that there was very little Christmas in this book and the historical elements were window dressing to a mainly contemporary story.
Big pet peeve : if you are writing historical romance with nobility, learn how the titles work. This heroine was called Lady Bellingham (her last name) and also Lady Camille, she’s an unmarried woman, her last name would not be her title. The same for her spinster aunt. These are the basic things you have to know to write regency, the VERY BASICS. I’m not going to nitpick the rest of it but suffice to say, if you care about some historical accuracy in your HR, this isn’t for you.
This gets three stars because I skimmed a lot of it and it might have had good parts, but I missed them because of boredom.
Book 2 - The Ice Duchess - 4 stars
I honestly don’t have a lot to say about this book. It’s extremely similar in set-up to book one, but was much better. It was a sweet Christmas-light story (more winter than anything) about childhood friends and best friend’s little sister with another Duke who wasn’t quite as tortured as most.
Couple things I didn’t love: he left the country and abandoned her after her brother died and she was forced to marry a 70 yr old Earl. Kinda gross. He kept thinking he should have run back to save her, but didn’t. So she married a gross grandpa who was mean to her and now she has issues. I guess she had to have conflict somehow but couldn’t she have married an ok guy? Why 70? Gross.
Another thing is the hero is meant to be an academic, slightly nerdy guy but he was not that at all. He was experienced with women and a destroyer in the sack. I love a nerdy hero for his awkwardness. This author wanted us to believe he was awkward and yet nothing he did suggested that he was that in any way. Just don’t pretend he’s awkward if you want him to be a charming beast, just make him charming. Trying to play both sides doesn’t work.
Other than that this is a fairly light novella, with some steam and a well paced romance.
Book 3 - Tides of Desire -DNF 50%
I’m too bored and totally not invested in either of these characters. Maybe we got to know them in an earlier book, but I’m reading this as part of an anthology and didn’t expect to have to have read a previous series. They are just talking and thinking but nothing is happening . They’ve just jumped into bed together and I couldn’t care less. I can’t read any more.
Book 4 - To Desire A Scoundrel - DNF chapter three.
This is just contemporary romance dressed up in historical curtains. I can’t read any more of this rich society woman, being a bookkeeper for fun and running around having nightly liaisons with men when her mother is a well respected and vigilant chaperone to other women.
This author is on my naughty list now. This book was not good.
Thank you to Booksirens for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
This anthology is a warm start to the holiday season, but ultimately isn't my favorite.
It's my understanding that each novella has been taken from the author's previous series and collected into this Christmas collection. This is my first time reading anything by this author, so my experience is based on how well each novella was able to stand on its own. Some did better than others in that regard. Each novella does have a Christmas theme, in that the story takes place around that time of year or involves some sort of holiday gathering, but if you are looking for something to really help you get into that Christmas spirit, I would look elsewhere. The holiday season/Christmas traditions play a very minimal role in the plot of the story. I personally wouldn't label this as a "holiday romance collection" because of that. If anything, it's more of an introductory collection to the author.
I also noticed that the author tends to write very similar characters. Each novella has a very strong and outspoken heroine that doesn't play by societies rules. They all have interesting, academic professions, such as being a doctor, a botanist, or running a girl's school. The heroes are also quite similar. They are all very feminist and actively support each heroine's interests wholeheartedly, despite the fact that everything goes against society's norms. While I appreciate these kinds of characters, it became too formulaic for my taste. Two of the novellas had characters that felt almost identical.
Here are my ratings and a few thoughts about each novella:
Chasing the Duke- 4 stars
I really enjoyed this one. I thought that the botany business Camille was starting was very unique and unexpected. Tristan is super supportive of her career and has no desire to get her to stop, unlike her fiance Ridley. Camille is the only one that can help Tristan with his PTSD, and that became a very sweet aspect of the story. This is a brother's friend/rediscovered love where Camille has had a crush on Tristan since they were kids, and Tristan is slower coming in to his feelings.
The Ice Duchess- 4 stars
Again the writing is quite enjoyable, but the characters are too similar to the previous one. Again, the hero Dexter was friends with Georgiana's brother. Again, they both have had crushes on each other since childhood, and one character is unwilling/slow to admit their feelings. It is reversed in that this time it's Georgiana who is resolved to never marry again after being in an abusive relationship, and Dexter who falls hard and fast and helps her overcome her trauma. Dexter is also the one with an interesting academic career, where previously it was the heroine. Despite the similarities, I loved this one. It has one of my favorite tropes/plot points; agreeing to be someone's matchmaker before realizing that you've fallen for each other. Dexter falling first was just the icing on the cake. If I could recommend just one novella, it would be this one.
Tides of Desire- 3 stars
Loved the dynamic between Macy and Caleb. He's a gruff ship-builder who doesn't have much self-worth, and she is an inspiring doctor in a town that has no trust from women physicians. The side characters are also the best in the collection and have a more prominent role. This one is the first in the collection that feels very much like part of a series and not a standalone. The writing felt rushed compared to the first too. I enjoyed it, but felt like I was missing out on the bigger picture. I would consider reading the rest in this series.
To Desire a Scoundrel- DNF around Chapter 4
Obviously my least favorite. Couldn't engage with anything in the story. Not the characters or the plot. Very confusing. A lot of drama surrounds the characters and not enough explanation was giving to warrant their very extreme reactions. Definitely felt like a lot of details were missing.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
"Mistletoe and Christmas Kisses" by Tracy Sumner, a Christmas novella anthology . Cover: 4/5 Overall rating: 5/5 Story: All titles are either 4/5 or 5/5 for me Overall Steam Rating: about 🔥 🔥 for each novella included plus mentioned scenes, kissing, ect. Endings: all HEAs . Series or Stand Alone: All can be read as stand alone but might be attached to the beginning or end of a series. . Overall, this is a GREAT Christmas novella anthology. I would recommend this collection to anyone looking for quick, steamy Christmas reads that pack a serious punch. Each story is unique and does not feel repetitive. I especially enjoyed the variety of settings and characters that are included in this collection. I'm more than thrilled I picked this anthology up and gave it a read this Christmas season. I will be revisiting this book next year . Read as a self-purchased ebook. Honest review left voluntarily.
Chasing the Duke With her final season in the ton a surprising success, Lady Camille Bellington retires to her family’s Yorkshire estate for Christmas with a marriage proposal in hand. Beautiful and charming, but too independent for society, Camille has given up on the hope to marry for love. So she will marry for duty. War hero Tristan Tierney, Duke of Mercer, returns to his ancestral home for the holidays to find himself burdened with a title and the woman he left behind betrothed to another. As he’s only seen death and destruction for years, he’s come to believe true love is a myth. His aloof demeanour veils his deepest unspoken desire, to possess Camille Bellington. A well written page turning novella & the longest in the series so far. I loved Camille the bluestocking who’d loved Tristan, her brother Edward’s, best friend for years. I also loved Tristan who on returning from Waterloo realised that Camille had grown up & oh how he now wanted her. I loved how their relationship changed. I was also intrigued by Camille’s aunt & hoped her lost love would reappear
The Ice Duchess Georgiana Whitcomb, Countess Winterbourne, is known as the Ice Countess for her rebellious ways and refusal to marry again. Dexter Munro, mere days from becoming the Duke of Markham, made a promise to his dying father to find a wife by the Twelfth Night. Except the only woman he’s ever desired has vowed never to marry again. Not even to become his duchess. Georgiana and Dex share a sizzling attraction and a wicked past but is their scorching passion enough to melt the Ice Countess’ heart? A lovely story of childhood friends to lovers & Dex & Georgie have known each other forever after all he was her brother Anthony’s best friend. I loved both Dex & Georgie & their attraction sizzled, they both loved each other but she had endured a loveless marriage to an elderly Earl & once bitten twice shy. However the passion between them couldn’t be denied but would she take the plunge? I read this delightful novella in a sitting.
Chasing the Duke The first Story in the “Mistletoe and Christmas Kisses” anthology.
Camille, a keen Botanist, has been in love with her brother’s best friend since childhood, but has accepted a marriage proposal from someone she doesn’t love to save her Aunt’s home.
Tristan is newly returned from the Battle of Waterloo, and tries hard to hide his physical and mental wounds. He has also inherited his father’s Dukedom,
This delightful story tells how the two are brought together again, and despite many ups and downs along the way, learn what true love is all about.
I really loved reading this story, and look forward to the next in the anthology. —————————————————— The Ice Duchess Number 2 in the Anthology.
Georgiana Whitcombe, Countess Winterbourne, & Dexter Reed Munro, Marquess of Westfield, and heir to the Duke of Markham, were childhood friends.
Georgiana, now widowed after a wretched marriage, has vowed never to wed again, despite having a life long crush on Dexter.
Dexter has travelled extensively in his professional capacity as a Geological Surveyor, and has returned home due to the failing health of his father, but has always been sorry that he left Georgiana behind.
They are reunited at Christmas in 1820, when both return to Derbyshire, and rekindle their friendship, but is there more for them than just friendship?
This is a well written story, with a great plot, and well drawn characters. Fans of the Regency era will not be disappointed, and I highly recommend this to them. ——————————————————
Tides of Desire
This lovely Novella is the third story in the Anthology, and is set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1899, when men provided for their family, and women were frowned upon if they were strong and outspoken.
Caleb Garrett, the middle of three brothers, and the only single one has an accident whilst working at his boat building business, and is reduced to seeking out the Female Doctor on the island for assistance.
Dr Elinor Macy Dallas had already set her sights on Caleb, and he tried not to reciprocate those feelings, although his body paid no attention to his mind.
This is a delightful story, well told, and with great characters. I love the way the story is driven by the females in Caleb’s life, that is the Dr, and his two sisters-in-law, who are all outspoken and forward thinking. Caleb and Macy’s happy ever after is disrupted, and not a foregone conclusion, so read on to see what happens. ——————————————————-
To Desire a Scoundrel A Christmas Novella, the fourth story in this anthology.
Tanner Barkley and Kate Peters have history, but were torn apart after Tanner wrote a damaging report on Kate’s employer.
They accidentally travelled to Edgemont in the same coach; Kat to stay with her mother, and Tanner to stay with his friend Adam for Christmas. It’s a small town, so they can’t avoid each other, but Kate tries very hard to convince herself that she doesn’t want anything to do with Tanner.
This is another story that is well plotted by the author, full of surprises, and with some heroics thrown in for good measure. The love story that emerges is poignant, as well as Steamy at times, and will not disappoint readers of historical novels.
I enjoyed reading the whole anthology, but can’t decide on any favourite as the stories are all so good.
I received an advance review copy for free, and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
Engrossing from beginning to end, this collection of four Christmas stories are all well written in the usual intelligent, captivating prose for which Sumner is well known. The first in the anthology is “Chasing the Duke” in which two family friends have been separated by life’s circumstances. Tristan Tierney has returned from war, a broken man beset by nightmares, only to find that his best friend’s sister is betrothed to marry a viscount for financial necessity. Camille Bellington, a botanist with a florist business, is trying to salvage Longleat Manor, her childhood home from ruin. Camille has had a crush on Tristan since childhood, when Tristan spent most of his with her and Edward at the Manor. Her aunt was mother to them all and Lady Fontaine has no intention of allowing Camille to marry Viscount Ridley. Read how she orchestrates the union between Camille and Tristan, who has realized that Camille is the balm he needs to heal his tumultuous thoughts and the love of his life.
The second story “The Ice Duchess” is the prequel to the Duchess Society series. Widow Georgiana Whitcomb heads up this Society to offer legal advice to young woman approaching marriage and scrutiny of their potential betrotheds. After a cruel marriage to a 70 y/o man, Georgie has no intention of marrying again. Her brother’s best friend, Dexter Munro has returned to Derbyshire after traveling the world for 7 years in pursuit of his passion… rocks and fossils. His father is dying and he promised him to marry by the Epiphany to secure the duchy, so he enlists the aid of Georgie. The author’s talents really shine in this story, as Dexter woos Georgie with lectures on the stratification of igneous rock in between numerous glasses of wine. Who will be the lucky lady to appreciate a geologist, who hates balls, afternoon tea, and simpering misses? ( Be sure to read the novel that follows this book. “The Brazen Bluestocking” about Tobias Streeter and Hildegard Templeton is outstanding. )
The third story “Tides of Desire” stole my heart and first place in ranking these four. I’m a Regency Era fanatic, so Pilot Isle, North Carolina in 1899 really had little appeal, until I fell in love with the Garrett brothers, their wives and Elinor Macy Dallas. Caleb Garrett, master draftsman and skiff/sailboat builder, has fallen in love with shy Macy Dallas, a physician who’s having a hard time getting started in private practice. Both are haunted by their traumatic pasts, which have influenced their reluctance for intimacy, but yet they both yearn for it. This novella is rich in details which I will not share. Enjoy this one. I certainly did.
The last book “To Desire a Scoundrel” was my least favorite, because Katherine Peters is the most annoying, vacillating female in the whole collection and why Tanner Barkley was even compelled to pursue her was a complete mystery to me. If you must read it, then it takes place in South Carolina 1852. She’s an accountant and he’s a newspaperman.
Overall the collection deserves 5 stars ⭐️, if you leave out book 4. Lol 😝 I have received an ARC from the author and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
THE ICE DUCHESS is a second chance romance following Dex’s return to England due to his near immediate obligatory take over of the duchy. He returns to find his once love, Georgina, widowed with a strict belief she’s better off now that she’s free of marriage and men. As Dex realises, he wants no one but Georgie to be his duchess and Georgie refusing to give up her freedom again, difficult choices lay ahead.
The writing was excellent and Sumner managed to get me to fall in love with both characters straight away. Dex was so endearing, and I adored his heartfelt perseverance and determination to do anything it took to not waste this second chance at love with Georgie. And Georgie refused to confirm to societies rules after a tough past and instead turned herself to educating young women about the truth of these forced/ arranged marriages and how best to protect themselves. I really loved this concept!
This book packed in a lot of goodness and I found my heart melting for Dex and Georgie and their relationship (and enjoyed the good dose of well written steam) plus the Christmas time setting was perfect!
CHASING THE DUKE For a shorter book I was surprised by how quickly the author grabbed my attention and how successfully she drew me into the characters. Even before the end of the first chapter I was already full invested in Tristan and Camille’s story!
The story was full of delicious romance and steam and unstoppable love and longing between the two characters. Despite not having seen each other in years the feelings they had for one another felt inevitable, as though was no other option but for them to end up together.
Camille was so fun and bold and brave to show her feelings so quickly so I couldn’t help but love her. And Tristan was sexy, funny, kind and he, with the help of Camille, was slowly healing from his trauma. And I have to say I loved Camille’s aunt - she was so funny and such a delight to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed the romance and since this was a shorter book it meant there was as a lot less miscommunication than usual and that meant we got scenes where they both actually discussed feelings! Hurrah! A delightful romantic story that hit the spot. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
I have mixed feelings about this Christmas anthology. I'll touch on each of the stories separately...
Chasing the Duke: I'll be honest, this was probably my favorite in the group of novellas. I couldn't tell that it was the 7th book in a series as it stood on its own quite well. I enjoyed both Camille and Tristan and felt their romance was very well developed. I especially liked that Camille was a bit of a bluestocking with her botany trade. I would have loved for this story to have been a bit longer.
The Ice Duchess: I actually skipped this story as I'd already read (and reviewed) it. This story is a prequel to a series and I remember enjoying both characters in this one as well. It was a nice twist that the hero, a duke, had a passion for geology and the heroine, had a business helping women prepare for marriage. It was a nice reunion story that totally had me wanting to continue the series.
Tides of Desire: As the third book in a series, I often felt I was missing something while reading this one. It wasn't bad, but the character development was lacking, probably because at least one of these main characters has been growing throughout the series (which I haven't read). I had a hard time connecting with the characters and their romance. I did however, like the setting in America and that Macy is a doctor and Caleb is a shipbuilder. I might go back and read the earlier books in the series to see if that helps make this book a little more complete.
To Desire a Scoundrel: Well, according to Goodreads, I had read this book previously (like in 2015) and I honestly don't remember it at all. For me, this was the weakest book in the anthology. I really had a hard time liking either Kate or Tanner or caring what happened to them. Their history was probably the highlight, but I didn't like their reunion and found myself just skimming the book to get it over with. I just couldn't connect and would probably have DNF if I hadn't been so close to the end and wanted to see that HEA even if I couldn't really get behind it.
Overall, I give this anthology 3.5 stars. There were a could good stories, one decent one and a clunker.
“A woman who’d wanted him once, when he hadn’t known to want her back.”
Camille has always loved Tristan, her brother’s best friend since childhood. But he never knew it and went to war. Now back, he has finally noticed her but she no longer wants to chase a Duke and is recently engaged to another. Will the heart win out??? I may never look at Plums in quite the same way again 😊
THE ICE DUCHESS
Georgiana and Dexter
“I want your friendship. Forever, I want it. But I want this, too. I want you. I always have. I desire you as I desire no one.”
Georgiana has loved Dexter, a friend of her brother’s since childhood. But Dexter left without looking back, her brother has passed, and Georgiana is a widow who now runs the Duchess Society; which helps young women enter into a society marriage. Seven years later they meet again when Dexter’s father is dying and he will soon be a Duke and needs an heir. Dexter also realizes it was always Georgiana that he wanted, now that she has sworn off men and remarriage. She agrees to help him find a duchess and the story begins. I am now officially a fan of fossils! This story is very touching and steamy.
TIDES OF DESIRE
Macy and Caleb
“I was lost from the moment you touched me. Blind with desire for you, mad with it.”
Macy is a new doctor in town. She has set her sights on Caleb, her artistic boat builder, and he never stood a chance. Good thing she was what he wanted as well, once she got him past his stubborn streak. They both have known heartache from their childhood and fit each other perfectly. This story makes my heart sing.
TO DESIRE A SCOUNDREL
Kate and Tanner
Tanner was working undercover as a journalist when he met Kate who was engaged to the man he was investigating. They feel in love but before he could tell her the truth, the story was printed. Two years have passed with Tanner trying to get Kate to listen to him. Will they find a way back to each other?
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Having read all of the books in this collection, I am happy to leave my voluntary and individual reviews:
Chasing the Duke A Lovely Romance! Camille is a Bluestocking, totally engrossed with her horticultural experiments and she doesn't have time for love but is engaged to someone for financial reasons. She has loved and chased after Ethan all her life but has now given up on that. Ethan has been to war and comes back traumatized by loud noises. He is her brother's best friend and he becomes very attracted to her when they meet up again. The story takes off with Ethan taking control and wooing her. There are some really lovely scenes between them and they do have a happily every after which made me extremely happy. This is lovely story which can be read anytime and enjoyed for its pure entertainment value.
Tides of Desire Wow! This story is full of passion as Elinor Macy Dallas, a physician and Caleb Garrett, Boat Builder, fall hopelessly in love. The length is just right and the story flows. I enjoyed it so much and am very happy to recommend it.
The Ice Duchess Righting the Wrongs! Georgie and Dex grew up together but parted ways when she was forced to marry an older man, now deceased. As a widow, she is known as the Ice Duchess and when they meet up again some years later, the love that began earlier totally flourishes and grows and yet Dex still has a hard time convincing her to marry him. I loved how he slowly got her to realize that she couldn't be happy without him and also the way she held onto her beliefs for as long as she could. This is a very nicely written story and it flows off the pages.
To Desire a Scoundrel Lovely Story! A quick, interesting and passionate second chances story filled with lots of regrets and beautiful make-ups. Loved these two characters on their journey to allowing themselves to eventually admit their love for each other. I'm happy to recommend it.
Camille was fascinated with her brother’s friend, Tristan, when they were kids but he was clueless. He went to war to escape his family and the next time he and Camille met, he was a Duke and she was engaged to a man she didn’t love. Camille had decided that there was no way that she would chase after Tristan, but fate steps in and makes for an interesting story.
The Ice Duchess
This is a quick standalone romance about Georgie and Dex. They were childhood friends who lost touch with each other as Dex was involved with his geological adventures, Georgie’s brother died, and Georgie was married off to an old cruel man. When they meet up years later, Georgie is afraid of relationships and Dex finally figured out that he loved her and never should have left without her. This is all about the two of them moving forward and getting over the past.
Tides of Desire
Christmas celebrations are ramping up and Caleb is not in a celebrating mood as he is single and not overly keen on being around his brothers who are enamored with their wives. Everyone thinks Caleb is heartbroken over his breakup but he isn't since they weren't in love with each other. He is attracted to Macy, a female doctor in a time when women weren't widely accepted in such positions. This is nice, short story about two people finding each other and figuring out how to ensure that their pasts don't dictate their futures.
To Desire a Scoundrel.
Tanner and Kate are in a love/hate situation. A couple of years ago, they spent time together and Kate assumed that they would get married. Tanner was prepared to propose until he made a monumental error in judgement which led to disaster and Kate avoiding him. Jump forward to them being forced to spend time together with Tanner trying to explain and Kate being obstinate and you have two stubborn people who need to get their acts together.
A collection of stories taking place around Christmas time or in the winter from award winning author Tracy Sumner. Included are:
Chasing The Duke- a second chance story. Lady Camille is engaged out of duty not love. The man she's always had a crush on hasn't been around in years and its time to move on. Suddenly Tristan decides to come home for the holidays only to find that his childhood friend is engaged. But something inside of him knows its not for love, can he turn her head and her heart towards him? Very cute, very well written for a novella with a complete story that offers all the feels and then some.
Tides of Desire- friends to lovers. A female doctor and a shipbuilder. Macy knows she's not exactly the typical female being a doctor, and no one has every looked at her romantically. Until she kisses Caleb, then suddenly her world view on love changes and she knows he is the one for her. But Caleb doesn't feel up to her level and thinks she is selling herself short with him. Insta-love and lots of dialogue. This wasn't my favorite mainly as it really goes no where.
The Ice Duchess- a scandalous Christmas wager/second chance. Georgiana refuses to marry again until Dex, her childhood sweetheart challenges her. A very romantic and sweet love story, very predictable but nonetheless a fun read.
To Desire a Scoundrel- Katherine fell in love with a notorious scoundrel, Tanner. Secrets and lies tore them apart years ago but now, he will do anything to have her again. This is a early work of the author and it shows in the writing and collection of thoughts in this story. It is ok, but clearly not her best work.
These novellas range from 3-4 stars in my opinion but a nice collection all together. Easy reads, steam ranges from explicit bedroom scenes to kissing and everything in between, some are part of a collection but can be read as a stand alone.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Love the series! This is Tris and Camille story. About a childhood crush and a broken war hero. How after many years the two meet again and time and love has changed them. Beautifully written. #ChasingtheDuke
The Ice Duchess
Great introduction to a new series. As in all Tracy Sumner previous books, the characters are wonderful. Georgiana, also known as the Ice Countess is finally free. Widowed from a abusive marriage, she now co-shares the Duchess Society. A society that matches ladies with their eyes open to real life. Vowing never to marry again, she feels like her prior experience will help the young ladies. And then she runs into her first love. Dexter returns home to his dying father, promising to pick up the reins of the dukedom and to give his father the name of his bride to be by the Twelfth night. The problem is he doesn’t have one and only two weeks left. At a musical he runs into Georgie, his best friend’s little sister and the girl he never forgot. Is there still something between them, besides that long ago kiss? #TheIceDuchess
Tides of Desire: A Christmas Romance
The best for last! Love Macy and Caleb story. Both have past family issues that still haunt them and need to let go of the past to find a future together. Be forewarned…steamy! I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading #TidesofDesireAChristmasRomance
To Desire a Scoundrel
Love the story of bad boy Tanner falling for feisty Kate. Although after 6 months everything falls apart and Tanner isn’t given a chance to explain. Now two years has past and their paths cross again during the Christmas season. Kate is more determined not to lose her heart again, but Tanner is hoping for a 2nd chance. Get love hate storyline than is a fast read. With a bit of humor throughout. #TodesireaScoundrel
There are four different tales in this delicious compilation of stories. I enjoyed each for tale that it told, with the connection being they happened around Christmas, two in the same time period. Characters that made me laugh, made me want to shake the stuffing out of few, falling in love with a couple, heartbroken for the loss of a brother and enjoyed the friendship of some. They offered at look back at a time when woman had to find ways to stand up for themselves. Though I enjoyed all the stories I have to admit that “Tides of Desire” was my favorite. Caleb had a difficult time recognizing his worth or seeing himself through Mary’s eyes. A gift to give yourself that will warm your heart, bring cheer at the end and add a bit of spice to the holidays. This is four in one for the holidays. Tracy Sumner has combined four holiday novellas into one edition and each tale has a different twist on the romance at the heart of the story. Let us begin at the beginning… Chasing The Duke 1815 Tristan Tierney, “an arrogant cur” the Fifth Duke of Mercer and Camille Bellington, “brash hoyden” had known each other since childhood. Tristan had recently returned from the war with Napoleon and had realized in the years he had been gone many things had changed. Camille had grown into a beautiful, intelligent and strong willed woman. Over the years her family had become destitute, so much so that she had accepted a marriage proposal from Viscount Ridley, to save the family home. She was too good for Ridley was he first thought and after spending a short time with her he quickly saw that the hoyden had grown up to become a woman he could talk to, that would challenge him, a beautiful lady that would make him the perfect duchess. Now he just had to convince her. A touch of angst. A courtship in disguise and a bit of spicy romance. Christmas in the background sets the stage for romance that might just give one, her dream and the other, the peace he thought he lost on the battlefield and the love that both desired. The Ice Duchess 1815 Georgiana had come face to face with her past. Dexter Reed Munro, if rumor had soon to become the Duke of Markham had returned home. Almost too late for his dying father and far too late for her. She had loved him, while he had simply walked away, set out on his adventures in search of fossils against his father’s wishes. Without any support, she had been forced into a wretched marriage with a man old enough to be her grandfather, upon whose death she now was in control of enough funds to live the life she wanted. However, she was now in a position to help other young woman learn to twist the marriage arrangement to their best advantage in order to survive when, the laws of man were not in their favor. It was the beginning of the Duchess Society. Dexter had returned home to become the next Duke as his father’s time left on this Earth was very short. He promised to find a wife within a matter of a few weeks. He had a plan, get Georgiana to agree to a wager with him betting on who would enter the room in which they had gone to escape the house company. If he won, she would find him a suitable wife, a list of three eligible woman from her society. If she won, he would give her an adventure for which she longed. In the end they both won. The tale brings two people together who were always meant to belong to each other. However, it isn’t an easy road. She, determined never to wed again, angry at him for escaping and leaving her to suffer a wretched marriage while, he converted across the continent searching for fossils and rocks. He realizing the mistake he had made by not swiping her up and taking her with him on his travels. A romance with a second chance at love. From anger, to regret, to atonement wrapped up in love, some humor and a bit of spice.
Tides of Desire 1899 Christmas and love was all around him but not for him. Caleb Garrett was a ship builder, he’d had a rough start, a brawler, quick to temper and fight. His brothers had found the perfect wives for each of them, but the woman he loved was far above him. He saw himself as rough cut. He was a master boatbuilder and while his work was much in demand, he couldn’t see himself being accepted by those far more educated or higher in society. Elinor Mary Dallas was a Doctor of Medicine. A highly skilled physician she had applied to hospitals not many would employ women. So, she practiced her field on a waterfront where even here where there was great need only a few would come to her door. He was in love with her. She never appeared to look down on him, made him wish he was a better man. However, she was too educated, beautiful, she should be searching higher than him a husband. Mary Dallas was in love with Caleb Garret. Facing him with her feelings and realizing that he felt the same should have brought about a happy end. However, he refused to see himself as good enough for her. Finally managing to convince him to share her bed, their time together was everything he would have ever wanted. But he decided it had to end for her sack. He tried to escape, break away for fear of destroying her dream of working at a hospital that had finally accepted her. There is so much love in this story right from the beginning. A talented man who had taught him self to use his imagination, talented hands and quick wits to create a variety of highly sought after boats. I bled for both of them because the time in which they lived was so judgmental. In the end they would find their way. To Desire a Scoundrel 1852 Tanner loved Kate but had made an error. He had been courting her while resourcing a story about her about her fiancé. He editor was to hold off printing the story for a few days, in order for Tate to tell Kate and to propose. Sadly, it was printed making her look as if she was part of the mishandling of funds. For a year she refused to answer his letters or speak to him, in spite of the fact that she loved him. Until they turned up in the same small town, almost two years later, and had to deal with each other again face to face. Kate was a harder character to wrap myself around. She was a strong woman who gave Tanner a difficult time, while he did his darndest to convince her of the facts about the article. Even spending time with other women didn’t destroy the love he held for her. I enjoyed Tanner, he was a character that was so well played out, I could easily picture him. It took a bit but Kate’s hard line against him finally clicked in for me. The time period was difficult to overcome any type of scandal for a woman and she too was hurting. In the end, it was Jack and Jill… Tanner fell first, and Kate came tumbling after… I was given a review copy for my honest opinion.
Actual rating 4.5 ⭐️. This book is a collection of four novellas. I enjoyed reading all of them. Each one had high steam scenes and great storylines. Each story has a strong, independent female character which I love. Each story has a happy ever after and are just the best way of relaxing, even for a short while as each one is a fairly quick read.
Chasing the Duke- Set in 1815, Regency England Lady Camille Bellington and her older brother Edward became orphans when she was five. They go to live with their spinster aunt Lady Isabel Fontaine. Edward’s best friend growing up is Tristan Tierney. Camille had a crush on him since she was young, he always saw her as Edward’s younger sister. After he left for school, she swore she was over him and would never chase after another man again. Years later, Camille is a horticultural expert (encouraged by her aunt) and has a business involving plants which helps keep her aunt’s estate afloat. She is engaged to a stuffy viscount, who she is not in love with. Tristan returns to her aunt’s estate for the Christmas holiday. He has traumatic nightmares from his time at war and doesn’t know if he will ever heal enough to marry. He is attracted to Camille now she has grown up into a beautiful young woman with an independent streak, which he finds a change to the usual women of the ton. She tries to deny her attraction to him but as they spend time together, their relationship develops and their chemistry is electric. There’s a nice epilogue.
The Ice Duchess- Set in 1820, England This is the prequel to the Duchess Society series. Countess Georgiana Whitcomb has fancied her older brother’s best friend Dexter Munro since she was a young teenager. He went away travelling and fossil hunting. While Dexter is away, Georgiana’s brother died and she became a widow of a much older man after an unhappy marriage. She and her best friend Hildegard Templeton run The Duchess Society for young women. They help women navigate the marriage process in the ton in the hope that other women won’t have as unhappy a marriage as Georgiana did. She has now been nicknamed The Ice Duchess. Dexter returns after seven years away as his father, the Duke of Markham is dying. He promises his father that he will be engaged by the Twelfth Day of Christmas. He wants to marry Georgiana but she doesn’t want to marry again but she’s wants to help him find his perfect wife. He agrees to her making a list of eligible women and he will meet them but she must be in attendance because he will be trying to make her see that they are a perfect fit. As they spend time together, Georgiana’s mind may be changing and remarrying may not be such a bad thing. This story has a lovely epilogue.
Tides of Desire- Set in North Carolina in December 1899 Elinor Dallas (Macy) is the new doctor of Pilot Isle. She is struggling to find patients as the town is suspicious of a female doctor. Her only family is her father and uncle, who were doctors in practice together. There was a scandal when Macy was younger involving her uncle. Her father and uncle moved away, leaving her alone.
Caleb Garrett is a grumpy boat maker with a short fuse. He hates Christmas time. He has two brothers, both married to suffragettes and love the Christmas season. Even though they fight, Caleb loves his brothers and their families. He has been broken in the past and even though he knows Macy is attracted to him and he is attracted to her, he thinks she is too good for him. Macy only sees good in Caleb.
When he cuts himself badly enough to need stitches, he goes to Macy for treatment. The attraction between the two while she is stitching his arm up is sizzling. When Macy is helping Caleb’s sisters in law decorate their house for Christmas they talk about him and talk her into visiting him to try to get him to talk about his heartbreak. When he bursts his stitches attempting to cut down a Christmas tree for his brother, it seems like the perfect time to visit him at his workshop. Oh my, I loved reading this part of the book. The details of the seduction of each other is amazing! It was like watching it in a movie. It was so hot to read! Both are falling hard for each other. When Macy gets an opportunity miles away that she really needs, Caleb is heartbroken, but he insists she goes. She doesn’t want to go but this opportunity may never happen again. She has to decide what she wants for her life. He gives her the most thoughtful gift she could ever have. There’s an epilogue for this book.
To Desire a Scoundrel- Set in South Carolina 1852 Tanner Barclay had the misfortune of unexpectedly sharing a stagecoach with Katherine Peters. She blames him for her broken engagement with Abel Aster and she is not letting him forget it as they travel together. Tanner was undercover in Abel Aster’s business, looking into fraud for the newspaper he writes for. Unfortunately Kate was caught up in it. She lost her fiancé and her friend, as her and Tanner met when she was working at her fiancé’s business as a bookkeeper while Tanner was working there. They became friends and got much closer when the newspaper article exposing fraud at the Aster business appeared. Kate broke off all ties to Tanner, even though he tried to explain things to her, she refused to see him. Tanner was invited by his friend Adam to join him for the Christmas holidays. Kate’s mother has a shop in the town and she came to stay with her over Christmas. Adam’s wife Charlotte has decided to play matchmaker in bringing Tanner and Kate together. Kate makes a surprising discovery about Tanner while he is visiting her mother’s shop and annoying her. They still have feelings for each other but he broke her heart and they continue to vex each other. The longer they are together, they get closer and they admit they love each other. After an act of bravery almost kills Tanner, Kate waits until she knows he’s out of danger and then leaves. He recovers and tries to find her. There’s no epilogue with this story.
Overall I loved reading this compilation of Christmas stories. They all had steamy scenes. My favourite stories were The Ice Duchess and Tides of Desire. I was disappointed that there was no epilogue with the last book as I feel it finishes the story off, unless they are going to be in further books.
I received a copy of this book from Booksirens as an ARC reader. I’m leaving this review voluntarily. All views and opinions are my own.
I already knew Tracy Sumner was a good writer, having read a couple of her Regency romances in the past. But I didn’t realize just how good a writer she was until I read this volume, which contains 4 novellas, two of which are Regency, but the other two are set in the Carolinas, one North, the other South, both historical but set at somewhat later dates than the Regency stories. The Regencies are all written in the same idiom, one that Sumner has a good command of. But the ones set in the Carolinas are written using not one, but two different voices. It’s the mark of a good writer to be able to produce multiple different styles, and Sumner has succeeded at that. I almost felt like, instead of reading a well loved author, I had discovered a new one. All four are delightful romances, but I was particularly taken with the third, the one set in South Carolina. The writing was so lyrical, the sex scenes so arousing, the characters so endearing. They are all Xmas stories, which, as a non-Christian, are not my favorite genre, but I’m really glad I read the series anyway. And If you are not someone who rolls their eyes with impatience through the Xmas season, that will doubtless make you enjoy them even more.

Chasing The Duke-5* Who's chasing whom? This is such a good story. It really fulfilled all my expectations for a romance story. Very well written second chance romance. Tides of Desire-4* Engaging and entertaining story, pretty much short and to the point. The story does stand alone but I think reading the previous books would shed more light to understanding their history with supporting characters. The Ice Duchess-4* Enjoyable story, I like this because it gives these childhood friends a second chance and after reading their history I was convinced that they are just meant to be. Love that this scenario gives more mature characters an opportunity to work through their emotions and obstacles without all the society drama so I get to just enjoy the humor and love tumble. To Desire a Scoundrel-4* Tanner has to put on his running shoes because Katherine has the fool me once, shame on you, but fool me twice, not going to happen. Regardless of their history, I love that Tanner has to work for it. I think they are meant for each other and was well entertained, short and to the point. This review is for Book 1, Chasing the Duke. This book is in the Mistletoe & Christmas Anthology by Tracy Sumner. The female character is Camille and she has said she chased the Duke growing up and now Camille says she is never chasing the Duke again! Camille has been in love with her older brother’s best friend Tristan for many years. Now Tristan is home from the war and has been invited to Camille’s family home for a Christmas get together. While there Tristan realizes a couple of things…Camille is now a beautiful woman and he’s very attracted to her…and unfortunately she is now engaged. There is only a small amount of angst due to Camille being engaged but we know that Tracy will find a way for true love to win in the end. This Novella is 140 pages, the length seemed perfect to me. Nothing in the book was rushed at all and this book felt like a full length novel. I thoroughly enjoyed Tristan and Camille’s story and with Tracy S. writing about a very fun and sexy Duke, there is nothing better than that.
I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing two of the four books in "Mistletoe & Christmas Kisses." "Chasing the Duke," and " The Ice Duchess." I love that all of her heroines are strong, sassy, independent women and the heroes masculine, sexy, wealthy men who love their women just as they are.
Caleb Garrett and Dr Macy Dallas's story, from "Tides of Desire," is a fun steamy read about two people who have the hots for each other. Him trying to hide how he feels, and her trying to dodge him because of an incident that occurred between them. These two along with the rest of the Garrett brothers and their wives make this a funny wonderful love story.
Kate and Tanner from "To Desire a Scoundrel," is a love story filled with misunderstandings, arguing and hot steamy love scenes. The reason for the 4* rating is that I didn't really connect with this story like I did the other's. All in all this is a wonderful collection of novellas. This author never disappoints. I recommend this book.

These four novellas by Tracy Sumner ran the gamut of her different series, on different continents, at different time periods. The four books were Chasing the Duke (prequel to the Duchess Society books); Tides of Desire; The Ice Duchess; and To Desire a Scoundrel. The Duke and Duchess books took place in England and the others in America.
Personally I enjoyed the English books better (Chasing the Duke and the Ice Duchess), and the American books seemed to have less plot and and less interesting character interactions.
I have already been reading the rest of the series connected to the English novellas and will continue to do so. The novellas that took place in America weren't as interesting to me and I don't think I'll be reading more of that type of book by Sumner, but I will definitely keep reading her books.

I have been provided with a copy of Mistletoe and Christmas Kisses: Steamy Holiday Romance Collection from the author and I am voluntarily leaving an impartial review. This box set has the following titles Chasing the Duke, Tides of Desire, The Ice Duchess, and To Desire a Scoundrel. I’ll update my review as I finish each title.
Chasing the Duke
Tides of Desire
The Ice Duchess
This title used to be a part of the A Scandalous Christmas Anthology and has since been republished on it's own. This is a prequel to the brand-new The Duchess Society and this was just a great way to start off a new series. I was just drawn in and had so much fun with these new characters. I was just captivated by their story and I was so sad to turn the last page. I can’t wait to read more wonderful stories from this author.
Chasing the Duke: Camille has loved the Duke Tristan forever but she is now done chasing him and moving on with her life. However Tristan has now realized she is the one for him. The struggle and wooing begins.
Ice Duchess: This is the beginning novel of the Duchess Society series with Georgie and Dex.. Dex has been oblivious to the love of Georgie and now has to make up for lost time. The whole series is worth reading and rereading.
Tides of Desire: A Garrett brother novel with Caleb falling in love with Macy the local doctor. A small town romance with interfering relatives.
To Desire a Scoundrel: Tanner and Kate have a murky past complicated by love, lies, and betrayal. Working through it to a HEA is taking a lot of work.

Overall, I adored this anthology! Tracy Sumner never disappoints! I loved the variety of the different settings with each having a bit of Christmas magic. Her writing style completely captivates me, leading to late nights when I have to read just one more chapter! The well developed characters stole my heart. There is something for everyone in this anthology with strong female leads and the men who love and appreciate them. Well paced plots that do not lag ensuring a story you can become lost in. This can be enjoyed any time of the year so no need to wait until the holiday season!
I received an ARC from BookSirens. (Thank You!) All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Four great Regency stories in this collection, I found them separately on Amazon so I can read again at another time. The stories are Chasing the Duke = Tristan Tierney, and his defiant lady, Camille Bellington get a second chance, Tides of Desire = physician Macy Dallas and boatbuilder Caleb Garrett, The Ice Duchess = Georgiana Whitcomb and her childhood obsession, Dexter Munro, the future Duke of Markham and To Desire a Scoundrel = Katherine Peters and Tanner Barkley. All the stories are short and well worth reading. I would recommend. I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Such a yummy four novella collection! The characters are varied, vivid and realistic. The story lines are captivating, and the endings are happy. You will find heartbreaking passages, steamy encounters and multiple surprises. Each story is an escape into another world where the leading men are damaged/dashing, the ladies are strong and passionate, obstacles are overcome, regrets are remedied and love prevails. What could be better than that?
Chasing the Duke Camille Bellington and Tristan Tierny, the Duke of Mercer Wonderful story! As a child, Camille used to chase after her brother Edward and his friend Tristan, both of whom were eight years her senior. She had been in love with Tristan for as long as she could remember. Then he went off to war. Years later he came back and she had just become engaged to Viscount Ridley, a fastidious mama’s boy. When Tristan kissed Camille in her beloved conservatory, the intensity surprised them both…but Tristan considered himself damaged goods. He suffered day terrors and nightmares and wasn’t sure if he could ever marry, yet the prospect of being with Camille gave him hope. For Camille, Tristan was, and always had been, the only man for her. Poor Viscount Ridley. It is easy to get wrapped up in this story. The characters are so inviting and diverse. Camille is intelligent, courageous, vibrant and determined. Tristan is strong, capable, handsome, protective and damaged. Who could not love him? Aunt Bel’s propensity for laughter at another’s expence adds a little spice, as does Viscount Ridley’s inability stray from Society’s norm. This is a passionate tale wherein Camille gets her heart’s desire, and Tristan finds the love of his life and begins to heal. The epilogue is very sweet.
The Ice Duchess Georgiana, Countess of Whitcomb and Dexter Munro, Marquess of Westfield /Duke of Markham. Georgiana, the Countess of Whitcomb had not seen Dexter Munro, the Marquess of Westfield for seven years, and yet here he was at the same social event as she. Dexter had left on a government funded geological excursion, and had recently come back to England because his father, the Duke of Markham, was dying and he would soon have to assume the ducal duties. When they were younger, Georgiana’s brother Anthony and Dexter had been best friends who had allowed her to tag along, even though she was five years their junior. When she had her first Season, she was so well received that, in order refill his depleted coffers, her father auctioned her off to the highest bidder, the older and unkind Earl of Whitcomb. Then Anthony died and Dex left England. Georgiana had been widowed now for three years. She was finacially independent and together with her best friend Hildegard Templeton, had created the Duchess Society where they educated young women about the real world things they needed to know concerning marriage. After her miserable experience she made no bones about declaring her vow to never remarry, earning her the moniker of ‘Ice Countess’. But now that she and Dex, the only man she had ever loved, had reconnected, she was finding it hard to stand her ground. Dexter was determined to marry Georgiana and set about a campaign to win her heart. This is a heartbreaking and heartwarming second chance tale. You will find sad and disturbing memories, as well as delightful and joyous ones, hot kisses and one very steamy scene. This story will draw you in, stir up your emotions, and have you rooting for the happy ending they both richly deserve. I love the epilogue!
Tides of Desire Elinor Macy Dallas, Medical Doctor and Caleb Garrett This story is set in 1899 on Pilot Isle, North Carolina. Caleb is the middle of three Garrett brothers. Zach is the eldest and the town’s constable. Noah is the youngest and an academic genius. Both are married. Caleb is not. Even though Caleb is a successful ship builder and designer, he feels inferior and tends to allow his temper to get the better of him. After an assembly hall cloakroom kiss, Caleb became obsessed with Macy Dallas, the new medical doctor in town. They danced around their attraction until they finally surrendered and one night of promised passion became sixteen. Then a telegram changed everything. This story has a different feel to it. There’s an underlying rawness mixed in with the loneliness and secrets. Macy ‘sees’ the real Caleb hidden behind the facade he shows to the world, and he finds it both comforting and terrifying. You will find strong women, Garrett family love and loyalty, misconceptions, town prejudice, complex emotions and multiple steamy encounters. I loved Macy’s Christmas present from Caleb….it appears he really ‘sees’ her too.
To Desire a Scoundrel Katherine (Kat) and Tanner This is one of the best second chance stories I have ever read. There is so much heat and hurt between Kat and Tanner. On the day he was prepared to propose, his newspaper editor betrayed him and he lost the woman he loved. Two years later they ended up on the same stagecoach, both heading to the same town, each professing to hate the other. Several encounters and a drunken kiss later, she told him her love for him had died and that she was marrying another. Even after a quickie in the newspaper office and a saloon fire that led to a daring rescue by Tanner, resulting in him being unconscious for two days, she still left him. But the final twist is romantic, powerful, and to die for! Loved it!.

when it´s cold outside Tracy Sumner is one of my favourite authors, her protagonists are always loveable and relatable, her plots are entertaining and her stories contain enough heat to warm you up when it´s cold outside. This collection provides books from different series and entices the reader to want to read the rest of them, a clever marketing strategy at a bargain price. I enjoyed every page of the different plots and backgrounds because the unique characters always keep me highly entertained. I received this collection as a review copy.
A nice collection of the author's Christmasy stories. I've reviewed my two favorite here.
Chasing the Duke Nice brother's best friend, tormented hero Regency story. I loved the heroines spunk.
The Ice Duchess Good short story to start the new Duchess Society series. Georgiana had a long crush on Dexter (brother best friend), but he left to go off on adventure and she was married off to a man older than her father. Now a widow, she can do what she wants. Good second chance, male pursuer story where the hero needs to convince the heroine he's all in for her. Nice HEA.
I really enjoyed these Holiday stories. I do like a little holiday 'magic' when it comes to romance. The stories were well written, kept my interest and kept me turning the pages. My least favorite was the last story and honestly it was the location that put me off the story. I tend to enjoy Regency stories, that take place in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. It was a fine story just not really my storyline. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
