A New Pair of Glasses

I found this book in the belongings of a good friend who recently passed. He was an advocate for AA and a member. I thought I’d take the time to read what he was into.
This is an interesting work. It’s not a book per say, but a transcription from one of the retreats. I’ll admit, it’s not an easy read, but it is extremely informative. One will find a lot of repetition in the presentation, but then, that’s what it takes to drive points home.
Chuck C. doesn’t hold back as he describes his battle with the addiction and how it ruined his life. He makes light of this many, many times. And, he does not sugar coat anything.
The one message that he drives home is, if you don’t have God in your life, everything else is a waste. No matter how hard you try and control your own life, if God is absent, you will continue to wander wondering why things are happening. He talks about seeing doctors, priests, ministers, psychiatrists, etc. While their advice was heard, it never brought him the peace and understanding he was seeking. But when he went home and knocked on the door of his old friend, everything in his life started to fall back into place.
I’m not an alcoholic, but that doesn’t mean this work doesn’t have a place for me. It reminded me of the final message Joel Osteen uses when he closes out a sermon, “If you’re a Christian, but have become cold to God, I want to pray for you. Please stand up and receive his blessings.” That is exactly what Chuck C. did. He stood up, walked to the door and called on an old friend asking for help. He was amazed when the door opened; he was allowed to enter and have a seat with no judgement. That for me is the strongest message in this story.
Who will like this? Anyone who is lost and looking for answers.

I read this in a forest in Japan on my way back from a monastic retreat. Perfect setting.
