"Divorcees.Biz" by Eileen Thornton is a great book about a group of divorced British women who decide to take the fate of dating into their own hand. They set up a dating agency for the high end of the market and for divorced people only.
The writing is fresh and lively with plenty of humour but also has some serious notes thrown in. The women have their own past and ex-husbands, some good, some bad and then there is a bunch of eligible bachelors.
This is clearly chick lit territory and for that it comes with some predictability and clichés but fortunately in this case that does not mean that the story fails to surprise, entertain and make you care for the characters.
Warm, uplifting and fun this is a hugely enjoyable read.

Divorcees Biz: EILEEN THORNTON

Divorce often means that some women begin to cower, hide or even spend their time wallowing away in sorrow feeling wronged. Ex-husbands sometimes seek revenge for no reason, want their ex’s to feel the financial strain caused by having to pay alimony and child support by demanding changes in the already signed agreement. But, some women as you will learn take the as some might say bull by the horns, lift themselves up, shake off all the anger and decide to do something that will not only benefit others but just maybe help them snag the next Mr. Right. Meet Connie, Sadie, Lucy and Jenny and why not become a member of the newest online dating agency Divorcees Biz and along with them fill out the application, pay the fee and start on your road to what some might call husband hunting but with a definite touch of class.
Connie seems to be the brains behind the organization and the one who wants to set the bar high and the clientele on an upper echelon level. Lucy has computer savvy and she’s the one that created the website, the codes, the client profiles and keeps track of who wants to meet who, when, where, why and much more. Jenny is kind, sweet and just wants to help where she can and even attempts to learn the computer. Sadie I have to say is my favorite no holds barred, says it as she sees it, tells it like it is and is truly someone you want as a friend even if she is not as she puts it so tidy.
Four friends with wild and different personalities who have decided to risk it all for the sake of love. So, what happens that just might put a snag in their opening? Well, the champagne is poured, the appetizers are set out and the guests are arriving and what happens? One ex-husband shows up in all his glory hoping to not only join the agency but with a hidden agenda in mind. The expression on Connie’s face as described by the author is priceless, her reaction definitely believable. But, with the help of her friends and their quick thinking things turn for the positive in a situation that could have brought this whole thing down before it got off the ground. So, when the rests of the guest arrive and everyone is milling around talking to everyone, it’s Sadie who reminds Connie that these people need to sign up or the evening would not be a success. Now, for the hilarious part that will definite crack you up as poor Connie tries to shout, scream and get everyone’s attention to no avail. But, Sadie does what my Aunt Tommy would have done, puts two fingers in her mouth and you guessed it whistles louder than a police whistle and definitely gets everyone to focus. The end result is a riot but each and every guest does join and the end result is just what he or she hoped for. But, when people have to come clean and tell the truth about certain things what they read in some of the profiles is right out of a tabloid that has personal ads. For anyone that has ever been divorced or joined one of these online agencies or dating services this book will bring it all into focus for you and is totally filled with real life situations that will make you laugh, cry and root for our four brazen, smart and savvy women.
The agency has started up, the enrollment is high and then of course not everything goes as planned. When Connie’s ex fills out his form what he writes alerts her and the rest of the group that something is wrong and she decides to confront him. What happens is right out of a Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn movie you have to read it for yourself. But, when he approaches Lucy ex-husband the encounter will make you shudder as will the one with Jenny’s ex too. Stalking, abuse, and rudeness and much more follow as the four friends join together to make sure that everyone is safe, no one is alone proving that their friendship is stronger than steel.
Each one of them wants what’s best for the other so Sadie decides to intervene on Connie’s behalf. Now, if you think I am going to tell you what she does I am not. The form is confidential and the information can only be revealed when you read the book for yourself. When Sadie goes to the bank little does she know that the security guard would decide to join the agency just to connect with her. Okay, so I gave you that much but what happens I will not reveal. But, when she and Mike, the guard go out you just won’t believe the reason he joined, paid the huge fee and what she learns about him that could nix the entire deal or maybe not!
One ex was a womanizer, one a bully and the third a loser and one just a nice guy who made a mistake. When Connie and Jenny decide to go for dinner what happens next will enlighten you to the rules many restaurants put in place, the discrimination singles might encounter and the chutzpah of one woman named Connie who will not mince her words and gets what she wants. As the evening enfolds things fall into place as two men find both Lucy and Jenny attractive and poor Connie begins to feel left out as Sadie tries to enlighten Connie about Andrew’s true feelings for her. But, fear and the thought that he might be playing her you might say stops her cold at times from giving him a second chance. Are her problems her own making? Does she need to take a reality check? When will the light shine on her and the bulb be bright enough for her to see the real light?
As Sadie and Michael get close, Connie worries about Andrew’s date with Lucy’s aunt; the two men they met call Jenny and Lucy, As one of their clients seems to be most popular and one cannot get a positive response you begin to wonder if they are going to have to put some rules on their site, guide some of their members as to what to look for in mate that would be more suitable for them and what do you do when a date is a no show?
Sadie is really committed to helping Connie see the light when it comes to Andrew and when he decides to ask her for a date to move things along what happens is short of a Lucy and Ethel episode and only reading it will bring it to life for you. It is hysterical and quite clever. Author Eileen Thornton has really hit the top mark with this novel as she brings readers both married and divorced into the world of dating whether online or when someone actually asks you out. The situations are real and the end results well you have to read it for yourself. As these four very distinct, different and intelligent women take on the world of online dating, men and much more.
Relationships heat up while others change and then Connie makes one statement that might change it all. An agency that is bringing in a lot of clients and money was what they hoped for. But, when Connie, Sadie and possibly Lucy find happiness what will they decide to do next? Is keeping the agency and helping others find happiness in their future? What will happen if they decide to sell it?
Things at the agency seem to become strained as Connie and Andrew bond more closely, the day-to-day activity seems to be lagging behind and someone’s ex comes out of the dark in order to ruin the sunshine in one of the four women’s life. Lies, truths, deceits, revenge and the happiness of four strong women is at stake when the past becomes the present and a major decision has to be made what will the four decide to do? Divorcees Biz: Sell: Keep it: What do they decide? What happens to each of these four vibrant women you will have to learn for yourself. Where do they wind up? Are they going to live happily ever after? Will their friendships stay strong? Read this outstanding novel to find out.
Can four women prove to the world that they have what it takes to start from scratch and be successful? Meet Sadie, Connie, Lucy and Jenny and find out. Only author Eileen Thornton can create four diverse women with four distinct personalities and pen one Five Star Novel.

This book represented a “read-out-of-my-genre” for me, which is something every reader benefits from. I was asked to review by the publisher, and I’m glad of it, because my usual genres are Horror, Supernatural, Mystery-Suspense, Thriller, Sci Fi, occasionally Urban Fantasy, and historical. Well, here is a novel that I would classify as “literary women’s fiction,” and I totally enjoyed it. The author does a superb job of delineating characters, through thoughts, dialogue, and bringing out the backstory through present interactions and encounters. The plotting is good, also; and the reader lives through the tension of building a start-up business, hoping against hope for a second chance in each of the character’s personal lives, and then the ups and downs as new people enter their frame of reference: will this work? Will that fail? Can we afford to go on, professionally or personally?

Jenny, Lucy, Connie, and Sadie are four close friends-close enough they’re not afraid to confront each other when one heads down the wrong path, or pridefully refuses to accept a joy-filled path. They are so real, so likable, and elicit the reader’s empathy. Living in London as divorcees, in all but one case struggling to maintain financially, the four women form an online upscale dating agency. The “hidden” agenda is for each to find a new relationship; but they also want to help others and to have a financial success. Not any of them are left out of the plotlines, either personally or professionally, and the novel is rich with emotions as well as the tensions of struggle and second-guessing oneself.

Obviously, I really enjoyed this novel, and I highly recommend it to any reader.

I reviewed an e-book version provided by the publisher, SalGad Publishing, in return for my fair and impartial review.

The minute you read the title you know something clever is going to happen in this book. When Jenny, Lucy, Connie and Sadie open a classy online dating agency strictly for divorced people, we expect it to keep them financially sound and out of trouble. Each woman has a hidden agenda for a new start—could that be a new man?

What they intended was a high-scale agency to link like-minded men and women looking for a committed relationship. What they didn’t expect is that one of their ex-husbands would sign up, that they would spend hours monitoring the website, and that their extravagant opening would put them in financial peril. The back-stories of their previous marriages are aptly woven into their repartee. How do they relate to each other? It’s a toss up amongst who’s going to be the boss, bickering over the business, and crying on each other’s shoulders.

This contemporary romance is a fun frolic if you are in the mood for something light and original.

SalGlad Publishing Group graciously provided a copy of the book for my unbiased opinion.

A good romantic story with a difference with its fun and humour showing the modern day woman making waves in the world.

Each of the women have distinct characters and fit well into the scheme of things. They each have a goal and we follow their journeys with a smile.

A light-hearted read.

I'm not a big romance reader, but this one seemed fun, so I took a chance on it. I wasn't disappointed. It's about four divorced female friends who decide to create a dating web site for divorcees. Each one is on her own journey to find her perfect man while also creating love links for others. Each character had her own personality, and I felt that the author did a great job in making each one feel as if she had her own journey.

The plot was simple and easy to follow. They had little obstacles in running the business, especially when each of them found love interests. There were many conflicts outside of that. I kept expecting some trouble from each of their past husbands, but except for a short encounter here or there, they really were nonissues. Maybe I'm just used to books with BIG conflicts, but this one just seemed as if it really didn't have much conflict.

There was a lot of switching of points of view in this novel. Usually, that annoys me, but I was able to catch on with each switch (most of the time). Still, it would have been a bit smoother had the author separated the scenes by perspective. That being said, I did enjoy learning the thoughts and emotions of each character. One last thing, it's set in England and uses British words. It didn't take away from the story from me, but it does take a bit of getting used to if you only read American novels.

All in all, if you are looking for a light romance to read, this one might just be enjoyable for you! :-)

“We created something with-class,” says Connie, near the end of Divorcees.Biz. I think I nodded in agreement. Actually, it was the author, Eileen Thornton who created a wonderful novel, rather ‘something with-class’. This book is truly an enjoyable read, filled with unique characters and ‘classy’ romance.
Four friends, Lucy, Sadie, Jenny and Connie have been friends for ages. They plan to start up a small dating agency in the posh section of London. Each day they learn new things about business, and a little too much about each other. Still, they thrive, while making the best of unusual circumstances.
There’s so much going on that the novel kept my attention the entire time. Thornton weaves her clever dialogue through pain, heartache and laughter. Amid the wild outfits and free-flowing champagne, there are brutes and floozies that need to be put in their place. Will the business fail? Will love save them all?

This is one of Eileen Thornton's first books and it is totally different from what the books I have read before this one were like. It is light and fun--okay there is a bit of drama--but no more then real life hands us daily!

Four very good friends get together and decide to open up a dating service for Divorcees. They don't want it to be run of the mill--it is to be upscale! They are actually hoping to find men who are unlike what their prior husbands were like--What they never expected was what a success it became!

This is kind of a zany comedy in many ways which will have you laughing and gasping in equal measure! Definitely a book you should read in my opinion-

But do these 4 women find the men of their dreams? You will have to read the book to find out!!

I started out enjoying this, it's a very light read and easy to pick up and put down and return to. That said, I did get bored halfway as it started being very "samey" and you could tell how it was going to end up. I also expected there to be a big reveal of the part Sadie played in trying to reunite two of the other characters but at 98% I finally realised that, unless it was going to be the shortest reveal in history, it wasn't going to happen. It just felt like a book about not-a-lot and whilst I enjoy it, I'm not sure I'd be in a rush to read anything else by this author.

Cute and entertaining romance with a somewhat complicated cast of characters. I don't read a lot of romance but found this tasteful in that it wasn't sexually graphic but rather sweet and naive in its portrayal. Several scenes were left hanging (what became of the ex-husbands and eventually, the business?). Overall, I enjoyed it as a pleasant change of scenery with the point of view that a handsome and wealthy man is the epitome of happiness for a recently divorced woman!

Definitely this is worth a read if you're into romances and fairytale endings! A nice holiday read.

Entertaining. Heartwarming.

Four girlfriends start a dating agency for divorced individuals, while looking for new love interests of their own.
This is a fun, quirky, heartwarming story. It has well written characters that you root for all the way through. Enjoyable from beginning to end, truly didn't want it to end!

Wonderful!

Great story with great characters. The four women, Sadie, Lucy, Connie, and Jennie, come up with the great idea of a dating agency for divorced people. Who knew if it would take off? But it did. The idea came to them because they are divorced. Wonderful things happen. It's a a terrific story. I really enjoyed it.

I expected *chic fic*, and this story delivered. High on the cute factor, low on the suspense/tension. That said, I tend to prefer a little more conflict (or at least humor) in my beach reads.

Eileen Thornton’s Divorcees.Biz promised a light-hearted, humorous look at four friends who start a dating service for divorced people. The premise seemed interesting to me, and I do love a good laugh.

All in all, I have to say the book delivered on its premise. There were some laughable moments, and because it was a light-hearted novel, it ended with a happily-ever-after ending for the characters, which I expected.

I had trouble getting into this story, though. Cultural differences aside (the author is British, not American, so there are differences in grammar, spelling, word choice, style, etc.), three things really bothered me.

First, there is a lot of head-hopping in the book. Just when you get in the thoughts of one character, you’re in someone else’s point of view. These switches aren’t a problem if they occur at scene or chapter breaks, but these occur right in the middle of the action. It sometimes made the action hard to follow, but mostly just took me out of the story.

Second, the characters weren’t remarkably likable. They were relatable, I suppose, but three of the girls seemed to really dislike the fourth. I’m not sure how they were even friends. In fact, the characters wondered that themselves, and we never got an answer. One of the women seemed pretty pretentious. The other two were kind of pushovers. All of these traits are relatable and forgivable, but there have to be some positive aspects to them to counterbalance the negatives. I never really found any. These women were realistic, but I just didn’t like any of them enough to root for them. The men were much more interesting and likable, although they weren’t the main characters. But they all got happily-ever-afters in the end, so it all worked out.

Third, there were plenty of conflict opportunities, but none of them were followed through on. Each woman had an ex who potentially could cause problems but never did. There were other women mentioned, but they never showed up. One had a son who could have made problems for his mother’s new love interest. But none of these things happened. It seems that there really wasn’t much conflict in this story. More like four romances building, but not many obstacles to overcome.

This was an easy read, but it took me a few days because my interest waned. Had the conflicts been exploited, it would have moved much faster. Had the women been more likable, I would have read faster.

But all that said, there were moments of levity which buoyed the content. If you’re looking for a light chick-lit story, you’ll probably enjoy this. But if you’re looking for action and conflict, this isn’t the story for you.

The book centres on 4 friends who are recently divorced and setting up a new business. The trials and tribulations of setting up this business provides the progress for the storyline, supporting each other through life's ups and downs, as well as the convenience of access to available men! The ladies have their wistful moments (including the classic "why me" which the vast majority of people can identify with) which I felt were the best elements of the novel.

I thought that this book had an interesting twist on the usual chick-lit genre. Not a young single girl, looking for love, but four ladies who have certainly been bitten by their previous relationships. The characters are well-defined and we understand whose husband has played away, whose husband is violent, whose husband [...] etc.

I think the storyline would have benefitted from more characterisation beyond the focus on the one with 'wacky' clothes. I did find the characters plausible but found that 4 felt contrived and it could probably have survived without the side story of Lucy - she was just there to round out the numbers.

I would recommend this to readers who like their fiction full of fun and frolics. It is a fast and straightforward read - it does get you thinking whether you would react in the same way - but not overly challenging.

Disclosure: I received a free e-book from the publisher (SalGad Publishing). This is my fair and impartial review.

BREEZY WITH POWERFUL MESSAGES.
Always a pleasure to pick up a fun, romantic comedy. You have no need to duck and cover to avoid the heavy conflicts that come at you, full frontal, and the story becomes a real joyous escape. When my children were younger and they loved to watch movies with their mom, whenever they would take too much time agreeing on a movie, I’d say: “Quick! Get me into somebody else’s life.” They would laugh, when in actuality, it is quite wonderful to experience life walking in someone else’s shoes. Especially when we’re starting a business and all the ideas go according to plan. How refreshing. YES!

I believe Sadie is my favorite character. A tad on the bohemian side, she enjoys speaking her own mind … yet I also enjoyed Lucy, the computer expert who cannot manage her own life. All the girls, though different, mesh well together, and all take turns handing us freebie advice on what to do and what to avoid.

As I read this book over several days, I got to know the four ladies and their men friends quite well. Eileen Thornton does an excellent job of using each lady’s quirks and flaws to paint a true and believable picture of who they each represent. I am going to miss them. Grapevine Thornton is now writing a sequel to Divorcees.Biz. I will definitely be grabbing me one of those books as soon as it comes out.

Divorcees.biz is a delightful, short read. It is the story of four women friends who decide to open a "classy dating service" in the Mayfair district of London. (A friend once shared the following words of wisdom with me: Always keep a good address. This book adheres to that principle.) The book not only tells the story of the friend's new business venture, but also the story of the four women involved and their second chances at happiness. It is a very English/British story using their vernacular, so many American readers may not understand all the innuendos and the vocabulary used in the story. I recommend this book for anyone looking for a lighthearted, fun read. It would make an excellent movie.

Four 30-something women....all fairly newly divorced and looking to start whole new lives....decide to take their friendship in anew direction: to start an upscale type of dating service for divorced clients only.

The story opens at the over-the-top launch party that has gotten out of hand. Each woman wonders about the choice they've made and the careers.they have given up. Yet they are holding out hopes of meeting their true Prince Charmings.

The story uncoordinated ways none of them eve expected.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was such a pleasure to read and great fun too.

An excellent story line with an unusual theme.

It starts with a group of friends who were all divorced and each hoping to meet the man of their dreams, started a dating agency. The journey the author takes you on with these ladies makes this a very worthwhile read and will have you smiling in parts.

I loved it and definitely recommend it.

This is a fun book I think readers will enjoy. Four friends, Connie, Lucy, Jenny and Sadie come up with the quirky idea of a dating agency for divorcees.Of course they ave no idea what they are letting themselves in for and besides it's hard to help others get dates when you have problems with your own relationships. Join in the fun and the craziness as divorcess.biz dating agency goes on a rocky ride of love, friendship, fun and turmoil.

I liked this story. It was about four divorcees trying to recover from traumatic relationships and divorces. They decide to set up a dating service in hopes of finding Mr. Right. Divorcees.biz is the story of their adventures. It is set in England so some of the terminology is a little different but it is an entertaining read.
