I totally identified with Philip's midlife crisis, even though he's a pianist and not an author. I think the two careers must be quite similar in their all-consuming and uncertain nature. This is a beautifully written book about music and finding life when music fails... I thought the ending was clever, but wanted another chapter at the end to tie things up.
There was allot to like about this novel, I couldn't help but feel though that if I was more interested in classical music I would have enjoyed this more. However the book did have plus points. I loved reading about Philips relationships, I found his interactions with the mother of his aborted child, this former lover and his new found love impossible to put down. I found like them I wanted to understand this impossible man. I think these relationships made the book for me. I found some of the other chapters difficult in comparison. In conclusion an interesting read probably best suited to readers who have a passion for classical music or who can actually play the piano.
