They Hunt is the fourth book in the uncanny They Stay paranormal thriller series. If you like fast-paced shivers, slow-burn romance, and heart-stopping tension, then you’ll adore Claire Fraise’s spectral story.
Claire Fraise is an award-winning author of paranormal thrillers about sinister spirits and the brave ghost hunters who bring them down. She won the Grand Prize at the 2023 Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards for They Stay, and published her debut novel Imperfect when she was still in high school. Many thanks to Claire for the advanced copy of her book! Some spoilers lie ahead.
I want to preface this by saying I really liked the book! I’ll talk more about that at the end.
I’m a huge fan of this series and of Claire. These books are typically a 10/10 no notes read for me. This one started out pretty rough, and it had me worried.
The beginning felt pointless. I couldn’t feel the drama I was supposed to be feeling. A lot of the writing felt forced, like it was trying too hard to describe the situation or fit the voice of the characters. The stakes were supposed to be high, but I didn’t feel them for quite some time. It kind of felt like nothing was happening, and it was confusing.
Normally I wouldn’t mention typos in an advanced copy. This is not a final proof, so to mention them would be unfair. But I have never seen this many typos in an advanced copy before. That would be absolutely fine, but what concerns me is that the beginning of this book felt so unusually bland and even confusingly disorganized at times. It’s also longer than all the other books in the series (sometimes what feels like unnecessarily). Considering all that as well as the fact that this is the second book Claire published this year, I worry that she rushed through this one. Again, typos are nothing to criticize in advanced copies, but I fear they were possibly an indicator of why some of the rest of this book felt off.
(SPOILERS HERE) Something that’s bothered me for quite some time with this series is that in the first book, Shiloh mentions being sexually molested by her father once, which is obviously extremely traumatizing. He’s also physically abusive, and would beat her and her family frequently. But this never comes up again, save one time when it’s implied that this happened and then doesn’t really affect much else in the story. Through four books now, it’s basically forgotten that her bodily autonomy was taken away from her by her dad, the person who’s supposed to take care of her. I just don’t understand it in the slightest. That should be a big deal, but it felt like a throwaway detail in Shiloh’s story to make her situation feel even more tragic.
(Soft spoilers for the next two paragraphs—no specific plot details revealed.)
Another thing about Shiloh that I’m just not buying is how she figured out Jonah’s situation with the orb. The foreshadowing was STRONG but not in a good way. Maybe that’s the dramatic irony talking as I the audience already knew what happened to Jonah, but the tiny details Shiloh was noticing didn’t feel real. With all due respect, she’s not that clever, I don’t think.
And speaking of Jonah. Oh man. The foolery situation. I’m no hater of taking inspiration and borrowing ideas, not in the slightest. But this one was too hard to ignore. The Jonah subplot is literally the plot of Mockingjay. To the point where I could name the specific scenes that were being paralleled in Mockingjay. The specific DIALOGUE even. It was tough to read. The only thing that saved it was getting into Jonah’s point of view during that subplot. Getting his take was original and made all the other perspectives more bearable. By the end, I could stomach it, but wow.
All right, now for my praise, because while this is the weakest book in the series, I’d still recommend it like crazy!
This book was a RIDE. So much of it was wild and unexpected. Sometimes I would predict things happening and my expectations would be totally thrown. The character development was so sweet and powerful. I feel like this plot was less clean than that of the other books so far. So much happens, but that wasn’t a bad thing. It was still so enjoyable and riveting, and once I got past about a hundred pages I couldn’t put it down.
It took its time to get there, but Claire fell into her stride, and I’m excited for the conclusion of this series.
Claire Fraise this is the best work of yours to date. Oh gosh, I didn’t think that the story would progress in this adventurous and nail-biting way. I was thrilled the entire time while reading it. The story touched new boundaries and made its path. The journey got more intriguing, captivating and time investing in an excellent way. It kept me hooked throughout.
Claire threw curve balls after every few chapters and it stunned me sometimes that's what just happened. Even after getting a few clues for the next action it just surprises me when it occurs. I really enjoyed the book and was pretty sure it was the end by the way it was all going but then NOOOO it can’t end like this so we got a new striking cliffhanger—hats off.
I never liked spooky stories, it makes me lose my sleep at night because I am that frightened but this series is too hard to ignore. It has the frightening element but at the same time, it is action-packed with lots of twists and turns. The characters support the story beautifully and the events happening synchronise well. Now I am waiting for the last book.
Thank you to Claire for sending me an advanced copy of her book! I have enjoyed being on her ARC team for all four books in this series and always enjoy her writing.
While the book overall was an enjoyable read, this one fell a little flat for me. (Especially since I now have three others to compare it to).
The pros: - High stakes drama the entire time with lots of action - Lots of ghosties - which I've always been a fan of - Shiloh's POV has always been a personal favorite of mine and that continued in this book
The cons: - It was LONG - At times it felt unnecessarily so - A lot of typos in my ARC - The main group that I love to see together is together is separated for a lot of the book - Not sure based on the ending if another book is happening or if this was the final book in the series? All the characters are in pretty rough shape, I'm not sure how much more drama and torture these kids can be put through.
I want to end with, I adore Claire as an author. Although this book was not my favorite in this series, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another book from her and look forward to seeing what she writes next!
Oh, no! Not a cliffhanger! Claire, you have done it again! The action, adventure, ghosts, near deaths, the beating of death…
This book has it all. It’s a little unbelievable because no teenager could go through all this and still be allowed out of the house, but who cares!? It’s a story!
Thank you, Claire, for the ARC, for keeping me on my toes, for keeping me questioning “what on earth could happen next!?”, and for giving me action after action after action.
If you’re a YA Mystery fan, this series is for you! Book 4 did not disappoint!
It took me longer than necessary to read this book because my brain is a jumbled mess on the neat days, but I loved this book! It was a great addition to the series. There were so many twists and turns, some expected and some unexpected. I really hope there will be another book, because I need to know what is happening in Bethany now!
What a crazy ride! That's what I always get reading Claire Fraise's books. I had the honor of being an Arc reader for "They Hunt" and If you haven't picked up her books yet, I highly recommend you do so, especially if you love all things paranormal! This group of friends is truly unstoppable and it's incredible with what they endure along the way! As usual, my favorite character Francesca is a beast throughout this entire book and we see her grow even more with her supernatural abilities and we see her finding more about herself as well. My favorite POVs are always Francesca's because I think she has the most growth out of all her friends and holds the most weight of responsibilities in her group of friends. Francesca is the glue that holds them all together and I was so happy to see her doing just that in this book!
However, I do have to admit that this was not my favorite book out of the series so far and I struggled a little to get through it. I felt the pacing of this book was a little too slow for me, especially in the beginning and I struggled with the group hardly being all together in this book. I always look forward to the group's banter and seeing them grow with each other and to be honest, I didn't see much growth in any of the characters (besides Francesca) this time around. Yes, the friends all had each other's backs the best they could in their given situations but I didn't feel that strong friendship connection as they had in the previous books. I also didn't like the over-explaining of things I felt we should have already known from reading the previous books.
What I will say is, "OMG that ending though!!! 😳" Heck yes I'm excited to read the next book for sure!!" The ending made up for all the other parts that I wasn't a huge fan of this time around. But let me say that the twists and turns I foresee in the new book get me sooooo excited for her many more books to come in the future!
I was honored to be an ARC reader for Claire and im so excited to see what she has next! Pick this series up and dive in because I guarantee you, you'll be on the edge of your seat excited to see what happens next!
They Hunt was well crafted, scary, and at times emotionally charged
(Spoiler Free Review) I have always been a fan of Claire Fraise, and as she gets older, her writing becomes stronger and more finely crafted each book she releases. When I read this story, I was expecting the usual craziness of the scooby gang, but the level in terms of story creativity, general excitement of emotions, and overall story development was next level. They hunt was so packed in terms of action, intrigue, and exciting character moments that you felt the roller coaster of emotions reach new levels. She weaved a horror story that carried every emotion you can imagine and told a story that made you feel as if you were in the same room many times with the characters. She focused really hard on flushing out her charactors personalities and quirks in this book, all the while setting up the next book in the series. When you compare book 1 to book 4, it's night and day in terms of her writing ability and how it has developed. I enjoyed this story , I got frustrated at the main charactors at times but had to remind myself that they are teens and felt the villian moments were well spaced out and how she introduced them shows how well her writing ability has developed. This story was a fun ride full of spooky horror moments and teenage angst, all the while developing weird love love moments. Pick up this book you will enjoy page 1 to the last page and you will ask yourself when will I get to the see the next book, remember I told you well crafted story that developed the plot for the next story sprinkled throughout, make sure you pay attention I feel those key moments will need to be remembered because how she wrote them it scares me what the next book will introduce. Enjoy this book
I don’t know how this is going to end, but I know one thing. My life is over. It ended the second I pulled that trigger
Once again Clarie Fraise has delivered an attention grabbing novel that delves into the mystery of ghosts and the supernatural. They Hunt is the fourth book in the They Stay series which follows our four main characters; Shiloh, Miles, Jonah, and Francesca, and their battles against a decades old ghost Leonard as he roams Bethany, Ohio in search of hosts to bring his former friends back to life. As time passes, Leonard is growing stronger, and without the proper assistance, perhaps too powerful for them to stop him. But before they can plan anything else, the group must first find a way to break Shiloh out of jail. Legally of course.
I loved seeing the mother become more involved and understanding of the situation since she was forced into the supernatural world since she was introduced as more of a static character in the previous novels, especially concerning Max and the abuse reports about her husband; but here, we get to see her take part in freeing Shiloh and even stand up to her husband to do so. They Hunt is definitely one of my favourite books from the series packed with mystery and action that will always leave you wondering what’s going to happen next, what’s the next twist.
Claire’s writing and description really tie everything together as well; everything is perfectly described— character descriptions, settings, emotions especially in the ending chapters as they face off against Leonard for the second time. This book definitely lived up to my anticipation from Claire’s previous novels and I can’t wait to read the finale!
THEY HUNT is the fourth installment in the They Stay series and it’s the most gripping book in the series to date. The stakes are higher for Shiloh and crew, there’s tension between friends, and there’s an overall feeling of dread in the air that begins to creep in from the very first chapters. My favorite part of this series is ghosts and the supernatural elements, and this book had ghosts aplenty. I loved getting back in to this world and seeing Shiloh, Francesca, and the rest of the friends again. This book felt like nonstop action from beginning to end. While the main focus is the ghost that was previously banished, things are a bit complicated this time around as most of the crew aren’t together like they normally are. It was interesting to see them work together without actually being together, and I think that helped shine a light on their strengths as individuals. I’ve grown so used to seeing them work as a unit and I kind of liked seeing a couple of them out on their own. There are a couple of twists thrown in that I certainly didn’t see coming, and I loved that even though this is book 4 in the series, Claire still manages to surprise readers. Don’t even get too comfortable because she’ll be sure to shake things up. The end is yet another brutal one and it still leaves some things hanging and a bit unfinished. All told, another solid entry in the series. I’m so excited for the fifth and final book, I have my fingers crossed that these beloved characters will finally find some peace and some happiness. 4 stars.
*Many thanks to the author for gifting a copy for review!
They Hunt is the fourth book of the They Stay series. This book is a thrilling ride that combines vivid imagery, engaging characters, and exciting action effortlessly. From the beginning, Fraise's imagery is so evocative that the book reads like a movie playing in your mind. The scenes come alive with rich details, making it easy to visualize every twist and turn of the plot.
This book was a refreshing escape, pulling me out of a reading slump with its fast-paced narrative and well-crafted storyline. Shiloh's journey resonated with me, and I became more invested in her character. Fraise skillfully weaves her struggles and triumphs, adding depth and authenticity to Shiloh's story.
What sets this book apart from the rest of the series is the involvement of supporting characters like Shiloh's mother and Max, which make the plot personal to the characters’ families in a way that raises the stakes. Their roles in the plot add layers to the narrative, creating a dynamic and interconnected story that keeps readers eagerly turning the pages. Fraise's knack for crafting compelling plots and developing characters shines through again, but what's truly noteworthy is her evident maturity in this book's writing.
The action scenes in "They Hunt" are nothing short of spectacular. Gripping and exciting, they propel the story forward with a relentless energy that makes it nearly impossible to put the book down. Fraise demonstrates a mastery of pacing, seamlessly blending suspenseful moments with character-driven elements.
They Hunt is a must-read for anyone seeking an escape into a world of suspense and adventure.

I’ve been on this ride with Shiloh and her friends since book one, and I gotta say, it just keeps getting better! We ended book 3 with the death of Leonard, so everything must be okay now, right? Wrong! Things are getting really serious now and Claire pulls out all the stops! Just when you think this story is finally reaching a conclusion, bam, we are hit with another unbelievable cliffhanger! I can’t wait to see how she (maybe) wraps everything up for us! Get your hands on this series now!
Claire, my children need to have a happy ending because while this was a nicer ending than usual there are still things that have to get dealt with. And if those things aren't dealt with that I will riot 😤. But anyways this was such a good book!!!! I wanted to cry some many times with how Shiloh and Jonah's relationship progressed but I was very happy with how it ended.
Francesca just can't catch a break though and I want her to get at least a decent ending in the next book since she's kind of in the middle of seeing how her body reacted to everything that happened in the end. I really can't wait to see what the extent of her abilities are because even though she pushes them to the limits in this one I feel like there's still more that have to be explored, especially given how the book ends.
Miles is also going through a lot in this but I was happy with how he came to acknowledge his situation and accept there was no changing it and to just take the good with the bad because there was not really much else he could do without freaking out his family and everyone else in town, but maybe that wouldn't be too big of a problem given the end.
There is just Soo much that happens and I really need the next book to come out sooner so I can have the satisfaction of a hea if that's what Claire's gonna do, which I really hope is the case 😭.
I am absolutely obsessed with these books! And I think this one may be my favorite!!
The stakes continue to rise for Shiloh and her friends as they cross paths with the Other Side.
I loved this book! I love the development of the story and the characters - it's all just fantastic!
The suspense and the twists and turns are so good (as they have been the whole series), keeping me on my toes constantly. I love the way Claire writes in general. It's the perfect amount of suspense that isn't too much or too little and the end was so wild but also perfect for the direction of the story. I truly loved it.
some of my only con about the book is that most of the characters are separated for a large portion of the book, so the groupings that I enjoy reading working off of one another aren't really there. Although there are new groupings that I enjoy, I do miss the old ones. And there are a few times where I start to wonder just how much more these teenagers can be put through...
Overall an amazing book and I love Claire's writing. I can't wait to see what the next installment has in store for the gang!
(Thank you to Claire Fraise and her team for sending me an advance review copy of this book for my unbiased review!)
First discovered this series through finding Claire on Instagram. She was a fellow Tufts alum and I saw that she was releasing her first book- They Stay. Received an arc copy and devoured it!! I’ve been along since the very beginning and have fallen in love with these characters so much! I cannot wait to find out how it wraps up after finishing Book 4. Yet another good installment, totally exceeded my expectations. The story is coming along very well, and with only one more book left I can’t wait to see the conclusion. My only critic, if you can even really call it that because it’s more just a personal preference, every book cliff hangs at the end. Never giving these kids a happy ending- which is what I’m really hoping for with book 5. They’ve been through so much pain, sorrow, death and loss. And for me, I really do prefer an ending to each book. But I enjoy these books so much, the cliffhanger has made me so excited for the next books release! This series is well worth a read- highly highly recommend if you love a ghost story!
They Hunt by Claire Fraise is the fourth installment in the They Stay series. I absolutely love the way she writes and truly enjoyed reading this latest chapter detailing the lives of Shiloh, Francesca, Miles, and Jonah. The book picks up where number three ended and Claire makes it incredibly easy to recall what happened and where the characters are currently. The storyline is action packed and keeps you hooked from the beginning. While I agree with some other reviews that the story does have some parts that drag, overall I think it's a fantastic read and great addition to the series. The ending has an incredible cliffhanger that leaves me on the edge of my seat in anticipation for the fifth and final book. Highly recommend!
How do these books keep getting better and better? It felt like three books in one with all the plots going on. I adore Shiloh and was biting my nails with how the book opens. She has been put through it. I loved Francesca and Evangeline together and need them to find a way through this small obstacle now.
WHAT is going on with the town now? I need to find out!
I’ve never read anything quite like this, so I never can predict where it’s going but I’m here for the creepy ghostly ride.
Thank you to the author for giving me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
They Hunt is the fourth book installment by Fraise. They story continues…does it ever! Four books in it is impossible to not be attached to these characters and be rooting for their triumph over Leonard. Fraise continues to write in a digestible manner—this book flies by! They Hunt is compelling and not at all predictable. Shock and dread mingle with hope and perseverance in the face of evil. You will say “oh no,” many times, but will want to see this series through. This book gives off some Hunger Games vibes, and I smell a real dystopian thriller for the next installment…
This book was so good. I have enjoyed diving into this world three times already, and each time just gets better and better. And I’m still in awe of how each character has such a unique voice.
This book was especially fun because we got to see the gang all together a lot of the time, and I just love their interactions with each other. The stakes were higher, the conflicts were intense, and it left me racing to the finish with a pounding heart.
Once again, the author knocked this installment out of the park!! I absolutely loved it!! The pacing is just right and the epic battle with Leonard is a mail biter!! Like omg, y’all!! So dang good!! The ending left me in an upheaval but I’m so excited for what’s to come. I have a few questions and I hope they get resolved in the next one. If you love reading young adult books with supernatural elements and a thriller be sure to grab this series!!
"They Hunt" is an absolute thrill ride! Claire Fraise has crafted a gripping paranormal story with a relentless evil ghost and teens you'll root for fiercely. Shiloh's bravery, Francesca's connection to the spectral realm, and the boys' loyalty had me on the edge of my seat. The suspense is killer, and the hints of romance add a sweet touch to the chilling atmosphere. I devoured every page – a must-read for paranormal fans!
Claire Fraise has done it again. This book kept me on my toes from the beginning. You think you have what is going to happen next figured out, but you're wrong. These kids go through hell and back in this book. And that ending! I'm sad to know there's only one more book left in the series, but I'm thankful for no more cliffhangers. I can't wait to see where the series goes in the final book.
One of few books that have left me at a loss at the end, not because it was bad, but because I had nothing else in the to-be-read pile that would have anywhere near the emotional impact. Another excellent entry in the They Stay universe. Rest assured: if you enjoyed the previous three books, you'll love this one.
Wonderful and mysterious and a great thriller! Moved quickly whenever the characters were in danger or being attacked and fending off ghosts. The only thing making me give it four stars are the typos and strange sentences that I had to figure out. Otherwise the books are great! And now I want to find the next installment.
I love this whole series, but They Hunt is probably my favorite so far. I’ve completely devoured it! The characters continue to grow and develop through the story. It’s so cool seeing how far they’ve all come since They Stay. There’s mystery, romance, action, and ghosts- what more can you ask for?
From the start, this book grabbed my attention and didn't let go. (Though I wish we'd seen more of Shiloh in juvie.) Seeing Leonard meet his end(?) was so satisfying (though I'm not entirely convinced he's completely gone). Can't wait for the next book.
Leonard is killed and his spirit is pissed! He tries to.kill.Shiloh over and over because if it wasn't for her, he would continue to be "alive" and do.his work. He makes Jonah turn against Shiloh. But , of course, the kids come together to get rid of Leonard once and for all.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
These characters just keep evolving. They are faced with difficult situations. Even an adult would second guess how to handle it. Shiloh is a modern-day hero. They all are in their own path. Overall great read! I can't wait for book 5!
Claire, I'm formally requesting either - a short story about the rest of their lives being happy - a gay ghost wedding - or - - the release of the rest of the series at once, please don't make me wait.
Wow. I just finished this book in the series and can't wait till book 5 comes out!!!! I loved all the characters and the twists and turns of the story. I read each book and couldn't wait to get to the next.
I read all four books in a day and a half. The character development was spot on. I will definitely look for and read the next in this series as well as all books by this author
