A good selection of kayaking incidences with a good range of skill levels. I really liked the sections that talked about how different safety things to know and how to prevent these situations from happening. It is a little outdated with the technology now available but a lot of things still hold true. When you are kayaking you're in a wilderness situation even if you have service, since you may not be able to immediately get help. The safety tips still hold true!

Deep Trouble is a collection of 22 stories of sea kayakers who got into trouble and the consequences of their situations. The authors are all associated with Sea Kayaking magazine as writers, editors, or contributors. Each vignette is followed by a "Lessons Learned" section that summarizes the mistakes made and what the paddlers should have done to get out of their predicament. In addition, there are "Safety Sidebars" that address single safety topics in more depth, such as wind, buoyancy, sudden drowning syndrome, and releasing a spray skirt. All the stories save one occur in the big waters of the Pacific Northwest, in and around the San Juan Islands, Vancouver Island, and Glacier Bay. Most occur in cold water ranging from 40 to 50 degrees and in big waves, high winds, and strong tidal currents. Many occur in the winter months when the air temperatures range from below freezing to 40 degrees. Nearly every story results in severe hypothermia, if not death. The writing style is easy to read with exciting articles alternating with serious instruction. If you ever have the desire to tackle big water in a sea kayak, this book is a must. In between chapters, I consulted the School of YouTube to find as much in the way of visual examples to back up the verbal lessons.
