On January 1, 2018, I set out to once again read through the entire Bible in a year. I have done this every few years as a spiritual practice. I grew up with, and am most comfortable and satisfied with, the NRSV as the best overall translation that is available. I still believe that is true. But to broaden my own horizons I chose to use the New Living Translation which came out in 1996. The group of scholars who created this translation come from theological schools and backgrounds very much to the right of center. Still, I think they did a very commendable job of translation. They very clearly outlined at the beginning their methodologies and practices of translation, so the reader is aware of the liberties and translation decisions that had been made for use in the NLT.
This particular version I was reading was also a Bible specifically geared toward people who practice 12-step Recovery. From my years in ministry, and afterward, I have had many associations with people who have battled addictions of all types. So I was intrigued to see how a particular translation was going to be used to speak specifically to those in Recovery.
In actuality, the side notes and resources contained throughout this Bible could have been applied with any translation - they are not unique to the NLT. Still, this volume did a very nice job of connecting each of the 12 Steps (which are actually a program of spiritual practice and personal recovery) to many of the passages and stories found in Scripture. In addition, this edition contained very detailed footnotes - many of the traditional type noting issues of translation and textual issues - but also many detailed connections related to the practice of recovery and spirituality in daily living. It would be my belief that anyone who is in a Recovery program would benefit greatly, and find much encouragement from, the insights and connections of Recovery and Scripture found in this notations. And as the principles of Recovery are beneficial to ANY person of faith - be they in a Recovery program or not - these footnotes offered great encouragement for faithful living for any and all readers who choose to take advantage of them.
For anyone who may desire of 'easier' translation, the NLT I believe will work very nicely. For anyone in Recovery, this particular version of Scripture will provide very helpful resources and connections with your program.
This is an awesome bible not only for those dealing with an alcohol or chemical addiction, but for those dealing with any type of sin issue. The 12 steps as used in AA and NA can be used in any problem from over eating to gambling, to porn. This is also a good starting bible for those with little or n0 knowledge of the bible. It helps walk you through not only the 12 steps, but the basic principles in the bible. If you have a friend or loved one who is incarcerated this is a good bible for them. This bible also has a work book available that goes hand in hand with this bible. You have to purchase the workbook as well, but is very much worth it. This book is great for all ages from teens to adult.
