National Award for Debut Fiction (Bulgaria) * Eastern European Bestseller * Deliciously Illustrated She is youwhen youwere lost...
Love is an addiction. Trying to understand people is an addiction. As are drugs, alcohol, and eating disorders. And every addiction is a whole new world worth exploring.
So Alice explores.
Working at a bar and searching for her own path in life, she enjoys studying people and their obsessions with a nearly-scientific devotion. She is not a passive bystander. A rebel with a strong inclination for trouble, Alice is always thrilled to experience everything first-hand, including the dark stuff. However, as she encounters a myriad of peculiar characters who change her perspectives on life, things quickly start to spiral out of control.
Will Alice find her way out of the hole?Have you?
An honest narrative about mistakes and our entitlement to not be perfect, Alice on a Friday Night is a hypnotic adventure in the unsettling depths of delusions and dreams. The book is not just an addicted-to-drugs novel. With a sprinkle of Eastern European dark humor, it’s an incredibly relatable story that rings true to readers from all walks of life.
Dessi Nikko on clarifying the “I’ve been compared to authors like Charles Bukowski (‘a female Charles Bukowski with elements of psychological thriller, satire romance and charming naivety,’ how about that?), and my work has been classified among urban novels, coming of age books for adults, new adult addiction novels, books like Fight Club, books like Girl, Interrupted, books like My Year of Rest and Relaxation, addiction memoirs bestsellers… I don’t like putting art in frames though. I write the books I’ve always wanted to read, that’s all.”
Dessi Nikko is an award-winning novelist and filmmaker from Eastern Europe.
Born in 1986 in Bulgaria, she navigated the challenges of a post-socialism society to become a cosmopolitan rebel girl in the end. Dessi is interested in psychological fiction, dark humor, satire, and all art that’s quirky, urban, audacious. She earned her BA with a thesis entitled “Graffiti and PR,” and her MA in Film Directing with a poignant short film about school bullying that raised quite a controversy in Bulgaria.
Dessi knew she was to become a writer as soon as she learned how to write. Meanwhile, she worked as a lifeguard, an English teacher, a lifestyle magazine editor and a waitress. In that order. She is positive that these occupations were good psychological training for her craft.
Based on her own experiences and encounters, Dessi Nikko’s semi-autobiographical fiction is so honest that readers of her debut novel “Alice on a Friday Night” are known to have googled the author to check if she was doing OK.
oh, what a pleasure it is to read yet another retelling of alice in wonderland. i will never, ever get tired of reading these twists on my favourite childhood classic.
here we have the main character— a frustrated writer, and nonconformist adult just doing her best to make it through life, despite the depression, and we have her best friend who endlessly pushes her to keep writing so that she can work through her trauma. she is finally convinced to write about herself, but she does this with disturbingly dark fiction— and so we are given two narratives within this book: the real world where she suffers, and the fictional world she has created to accommodate her thoughts and help her express the depth of her emotions.
reading this book felt like a cross between a wild ride and a fever dream. like falling down the rabbit hole, indeed— except you crash into wild parties, lots of booze, drug addiction, mental illnesses, toxic friendships & relationships, and a whole lot of other things as you fall deeper and deeper into the spiral.
this is definitely one of those reads that should be filed under: books with dark and unlikable, but pretty interesting main characters— so to this i give 🌟🌟🌟🌟 also, the illustrations are fascinating!!
if you take bunny’s hallucinatory storytelling where everything seems real and unreal, where the line between lies and trust gets blurred, then take boy part’s savage, unreliable main character who literally gets away with anything she wants, you have this book. i might even add in a sprinkle of my year of rest and relaxation into the mix if u want to factor in depression, and addiction. so if those reads are your cup of tea— then i highly recommend this book.
The reading experience was so fast paced and i think i read this book at the right moment, i needed a fast past yet deep and philosophical book with interesting and memorable characters and this book has all that
I loved all the alice in wonderland references
One think that i could not help but notice it’s the way i almost instantly thought about Sally Rooney characters when i was introduced to the characters in this book in the way they are written and developed
All the monologues, especially from the main character, turned the characters so real and human
As a person who likes to do people watching, all the different points of view and all the different people with all different personalities that the main character meets and analyses throughout her journey was really interesting
Even with all the fragile points and sensitive themes that this book shows, at the end, this book is about dreams and ambitions and what we are willing to do to achieve them
I LOVED this book so much. It’s been a while since I’ve read anything this good and unique. This book had me hooked from page one. It’s a book about addictions and dreams with deep psychological meanings, thought-provoking conversations on life and discussions on mental wellbeing. Loved the lyrical writing style filled with relatable moments and gorgeous illustrations. Honestly, a work of art! This was a wild ride that I highly recommend 💖
Thankyou so much @dessnikko for a copy of this masterpiece 💖
Oh wow! This is a hard hitting story about addiction, mental illness and dreams. Alice was such a relatable character. I’ve had friends like her and have been myself a girl like her. The illustrations were gorgeous and I cannot recommend this book enough!
Also: празни страници за край, need I say more?
I’m a simple girl. I see a book with illustrations in it, I read it immediately. I’ve just completed it and my thoughts are all over the place. I’ll probably come back and edit this review again but for now I’m just gonna talk about all the things running through my head right now.
✨Please note that there maybe some spoilers below so you might want to stop reading here✨
This book has such pretty illustrations in it and the writing in this book is so raw and captivating. The illustrations were the first thing I noticed and the blurb was the reason I decided to pick this up. The author talked about addiction, anxiety, depression and many other issues in such a manner that I found myself constantly thinking about them and the way they affect the people who faced these issues.
There were so many parts where I could relate to Alice and Venus and so many instances where I wish I could just give them a hug too. I love the way the book ended, leaving it up to our imaginations to decide Alice’s fate(and Venus too) since anyone who knows Tino, knows what kind of a person he is. The letter that Alice wrote to Bartender made me feel so emotional and since I’m a big fan of HEA, I’m gonna imagine a different ending to it all.
Overall I really enjoyed reading this book and to anyone who wants to pick this up, make sure you check the TWs first. It’s also available on KU for anyone interested✨
“Alice on a Friday Night” by Dessi Nikko explores the dark and gritty world of addiction, with a young woman named Alice as the protagonist. It narrates a realistic and unflinching look at the struggles of addiction, without shying away from the dark side. It delves into questions about meaning, connection, and the human condition.
If you're looking for a light and fluffy read, this is not the book for you. However, if you are looking for a powerful and honest story about addiction, then this book is definitely worth checking out.
Overall, Alice on a Friday Night is a powerful and unforgettable novel
Getting sucked into Alice On A Friday Night felt like tumbling down a rabbit hole of retellings. In this modern twist, our girl Alice takes us on a wild ride through heartbreaks, drugs, and mental health, all while trying to figure herself out.
As she embarks on a quest for self-discovery, egged on by her friend Annie, Alice pens her Friday night escapades. "On a Friday night, you can tell the most about people" struck a chord, as Alice's narration unveils a tapestry of relatable human experiences.
What struck me most was the rawness of the writing and the relatability of the characters. The prose is refreshingly raw, with monologues that really hit home. Amidst the chaos, we also encounter a cast of characters grappling with their own demons, yet striving to embrace life's unpredictability.
Alice On A Friday Night isn't just a book; it's a poignant reminder that every decision we make ripples outward, shaping our lives in ways we can't always predict. It's a narrative that doesn't simply ask to be read, but demands to be felt, contemplated, and internalized. It's like a mirror reflecting back our own struggles and triumphs, urging us to confront the complexities of existence with open eyes and open hearts.
The wonderful illustrations adds so much depth and charm to the book, I'm blown away.
It is a must-read for anyone craving a dose of dark humor intertwined with raw reality. (Please be aware of the TWs before picking this up
Alice on a Friday night, struck accord with the Book Alice in wonderland. this book explores the theme of human psyche under the guise of coming of the age story. The protagonist, Alice, serves as a mirror to our own struggles with addiction and the pursuit of self-identity.
At points, I was comparing myself with Alice since she felt so relatable at times. The authors narrative is raw and unapologetic which makes us face the realities of life. I was really fascinated with some lines from the book which I have shared, and there was a a feeling that there is so much similar thoughts going on in everybody’s mind. It challenges readers to confront their own demons and find solace in the shared experience of being imperfectly human.
For me, this book was really special, and I would like to thank the author for making me look deep inside myself. I would totally recommend this book to everyone who wants to go on a journey of self discovery.
For me, this book was truly special. It prompted deep introspection, and I am grateful to the author for that. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a journey of self-discovery.
What a beautiful and relatable read. If you love physiological thriller and dark humor this is it.
Alice story was a rollercoaster of emotions and feelings that are too relatable and the way the author wrote everything every character it was amazing.
The illustrations stole the show for me I've not read many books with illustrations but this one was soo good.
I was hooked so soon in the book i didn't even realised that the ending is close and when i reached at the ending my god it was so many emotions I can't even describe.
Thankyou for the eARC and this is my honest review ❤️
"On a Friday night, you can tell the most about people. That's when workaholics still work. Jealous people fight. Those who are newly in love are most affectionate...Writers often deviate from their original thoughts, but as long as you always come back to Friday night you'll be just fine."
I'm sorry but if this quote alone doesn't make you want to read the book, then you can not be helped. Alice on a Friday Night is such a delicate, intriguing novel that just sucks you in. It's about Alice, an aspiring writer who is just trying to navigate her 20s. She starts a novel about her life where she documents her Friday night outings and her struggle with love, heartbreak, mental health, and addiction. This novel is such a raw depiction of life and all the struggles that come with it, explored in such a dark and witty narrative. If you've ever struggled or felt lost in your life you will find this relatable.
Big thank you to Dessi for sending me an e-copy of her novel! (check TW's before reading)
I have to admit, this book was different from my usual reading choices. At first, I struggled to get into the unique writing style, but eventually, I found my rhythm.
While I can't necessarily say I personally relate to Alice (she's a pretty complex character with so much depth), I could definitely understand where she was coming from and why she felt the way she did.
It was like watching a young woman navigate the complexities of life, love, and human nature. Her perspective on the world was so different but it was fascinating to see things through her eyes.
There were some quotes that really resonated with me, and a conversation about how we are both unique and similar to others really stuck with me. One particular paragraph on the concept of how opposites attract offered a fresh perspective that I absolutely loved. It's moments like these that make reading so rewarding.
I loved the plot and Alice's journey! There were some twists that completely surprised me in the best way possible.
"Alice on a Friday Night" by Dessi Nikko is a complex coming-of-age story that mirrors "Alice in Wonderland" but adds a more intense, dark, and realistic twist. The main character grapples with personal struggles, and through her journey, we see reflections of our own lives. As she stumbles and fights to find her way, we can relate to her experiences.
The book leaves a lasting impact with its hard-hitting themes and doesn't shy away from presenting the truth. The author's compelling storytelling, combined with beautiful yet haunting illustrations, captivates the reader. The depth of the story lies in its content, but the characters keep us engaged and emotionally invested. This book will latch onto your soul, staying with you long after you've turned the final page.
This book is my first psychological literary fiction. It touches on multiple mental health issues, and while these can be heavy for some people, the author has done a wonderful job writing about these sensitive topics. Alice’s thoughts were so relatable, and I fell in love with her journey. Also, Annie blew my mind!!! The moment I realized who or what Annie is, I got goosebumps! I kid you not, I did not see it coming, and this concept was so new and different. The ending was left open-ended for readers to decide Alice’s fate. This was a one-of-a-kind book. It took me some time to get into the story, but I think overall it was a good read.
My biggest pleasure is recommending Bulgarian books in English, so I am super happy to talk about this piece of literary fiction I discovered recently. “Alice on a Friday Night” by Dessi Nikko is a winner of the National Award for Debut Fiction in Bulgaria; it came out in 2016 and has since been an Eastern European bestseller.
The book follows the story of Alice, who struggles with a chaotic lifestyle, a quest for self-discovery, addiction, and a group of friends with equally messed up lives. It touches on topics like eating disorders, depression, and drug abuse… It’s not a light read by any means. Let’s say that if you’re a fan of shows like Euphoria or Skins, this will be a book you like. You’ll also enjoy it if you tick any or all of these boxes:
Your teenage years/early twenties were pretty wild, and you’d like to read a story that will plunge you into nostalgia for days long passed.
You’re a fan of gritty and dark tales a la Donnie Darco, and narratives that closely resemble a fever dream.
You have lived abroad, in a country far too different from your home, where people, rules and locations left you feeling alienated.
You wake up from having the weirdest dreams and often struggle to interpret them.
You enjoy a powerful ending, gorgeous illustrations by talented Bulgarian artists (well done Diana Naneva), and multiple points of view in storytelling.
“Alice on a Friday Night” was super easy to get through. It was a curious experience to read a book from the point of view of a Bulgarian who has clearly lived in London and hated it, just like I did (although the city isn’t explicitly named, there are plenty of hints and signs throughout the book). I loved the different writing styles used inside the book too, it made it feel all the more real.
As for my Bulgarian buddies, if you haven't read this, where have you been?
So i have recently finished this book and I can't get it out of my mind.😌
4⭐
"Alice on a Friday Night" by Dessi Nikko is a raw and captivating take on "Alice in Wonderland."(Sorry I was never a fan of Alice in Wonderland). Even though I’m not usually into literary fiction, this one really got to me.
Nikko dives deep into heavy stuff like addiction, anxiety, depression, and toxic relationships, making it a gritty and real read.
The story kicks off with a frustrated writer who's battling her inner demons and the pressures of her work. Her journey is both heart-wrenching and relatable, pulling you right into her chaotic world. Thankfully, she has a super supportive friend who keeps pushing her forward, providing a glimmer of hope in the midst of all the mess. When I discovered what Annie actually was, I totally lost it because for me she was really something I needed in my life 😭.
One quote that hit me hard was, "Hope dies last but mine's in a coma already." This line perfectly captures the deep despair throughout the book, yet it also hints at the possibility of recovery, mirroring the writer's own struggles.
Nikko’s writing is evocative and thought-provoking, making this retelling not just a simple reimagining but a powerful commentary on real-life issues. The characters are well-developed, and their interactions are filled with raw emotion and authenticity. The narrative doesn’t shy away from the darker sides of life, making it a gripping read for anyone looking for a story that dives deep into the human psyche(the reason why the book kept me hooked is because it was so freaking real.)
In short, "Alice on a Friday Night" is a hauntingly beautiful novel that sticks with you long after you’ve finished it.
And the illustrations, they just make the story more enticing. I can't stop admiring them🤌the artist did a wonderful job ❤️
For someone who's looking for psychological literary fiction, here's your pick.
Modern retelling of Alice going down the rabbit hole that explores very sensitive physiological issues.
Pick it up if you want to experience a raw & real story of Alice; that might be relatable & makes you question deeper aspects of life (☆▽☆)
This is not my usual kind of a read, but when I came across this book's synopsis I was intrigued & eventually picked it up as part of a book tour campaign.
There are some books that come into your life totally unexpectedly but leave with a larger impact on you. Personally, Alice on a Friday Night is one such book for me.
"It's as simple as that. Beauty is more powerful than pessimism or optimism"
I started with the question in my mind "Who is Alice?" Then ended up asking the other deeper "who" & "why" questions. But eventually as I continued to read I realised:
I'm Alice, I was Alice
And You are Alice, You were Alice
Alice here is struggling to write something, Annie is helping with picking out her emotions. And they both seem to tell a lot to the readers through their conversations.
We get to go on this wild journey that takes us through self doubts, addiction, dreams & love - the ones everyone of us carry or carried no matter who you are or what you are doing. The success of this book lies exactly there. You relate no matter what, you RELATE.
"That's how heart is - a bit ungrateful, you know; you love it so much but it always loves someone else"
Humans emotions are difficult to comprehend & the humans we get to know in the book: Venus, Tino, The Bartender are complicated creatures adding a mix of various emotions; and you get to watch all the mess that unfolds slowly yet you find some beauty to it ♥️
Beauty of Imperfections, Yearning for Love, Failures, Dreaming and Struggles.
I feel Dessi Nikko's writing style makes it more personal. I felt everyone's emotions through her pages. And somehow, the narration & illustrations by Diana Naneva adds an extra weight to the words & just goes straight to your heart, wrenching it.
Don't be an amateur in dreaming, you deserve big.
So go on pick this one up & experience Alice, Me & You ❤️🩹
I didn't expect much from another Alice in Wonderland retelling, but wow, this book blew me away! The main character, a frustrated writer battling depression, is pushed by her best friend to write through her trauma. We're treated to two narratives: her real-world struggles and the dark fiction she creates.
Reading this book felt like a wild ride and a fever dream—wild parties, booze, drug addiction, and toxic relationships. The Alice in Wonderland references were perfect, and the illustrations were fascinating! The deep, philosophical monologues made the characters feel real and human. As someone who struggles with mental health, this book felt like a huge hug. It was comforting to see these issues represented so authentically. The lyrical writing and relatable moments hooked me from page one. It's a masterpiece and a work of art!
неочакван край, донякъде и отворен край, тъй като не сме на 100% сигурни какво се е случило с нея, но със сигурност бих погълнала също толково бързо и една "Алиса и събота сутрин"; finally a relief to my reading slump, if i can dare to hope
