Don Shirts grew up in beautiful Bountiful, Utah, and still resides there with his wife and four of his five children. His oldest son and daughter-in-law also live nearby. Don loves movies, books, and chocolate. He also has a fondness for dad jokes and good puns. His favorite scent is garlic sautéing in olive oil. He doesn't care so much for loud noises, long to-do lists, and winter campouts.
"Sean Dirts and the Hidden City" is his debut novel. He says the ideas that eventually coalesced into this story originated while daydreaming during his daily paper route when he was eleven and with his teenage obsession with Star Wars.
So, yes, I'm Don Shirts the author of this book. Why am I claiming to have read it and why am I writing a review? Because I've read it over and over this year and for many years so it's about time I got Goodreads credit for it. Also, I listened to the whole thing again after it came out because I've always wanted to listen to my book like I would listen to any other book. And guess what? I really enjoyed it, hence the 5-star rating.
I hope you enjoy Sean's adventures as a six-inch-tall boy with superpowers!
I bought this book from the author at my local farmers market. It came with a really fun bookmark that had pictures of the characters in their actual size of six inches tall. The author also told me that his kids did the illustrations for the book's chapter headings, which I love.
I really enjoyed this book, and I'm not just saying that because I'm biased and think it's cool that the author is local to me. It was such a page turner, and I didn't ever feel bored reading it. It's the type of story that I feel like I can recommend to most people because it was really engaging and interesting. I loved all the powers the people got, and the mysteries that Sean, and I as the reader, were trying to solve throughout the book.
I liked the character development that I saw in the main character, Sean, as he grew and developed confidence in himself. Summer was my favorite because I feel like she is just such a bold, fun character and someone I'd look up to--especially if I were reading this in elementary or middle school. She gave me Ginny from Harry Potter vibes, and I loved it.
I'm really hoping that there is a sequel coming because the ending is a total cliffhanger. It can't end this way. Please write a sequel, I'm recommending this book to everyone!

Okay, okay. This is my husband’s book. However, it’s the best book ever!! Mystery, fantasy, suspense, it’s all there. Great read for kids, but also for any age. I love it!
Sean Dirts and the Hidden City is a thoroughly entertaining middle grade novel that anyone who’s not considered middle grade would love, too! The story was unlike one I’ve read before and was filled with delightful and exciting twists and turns as well as lovable and relatable characters. I hope there’s a second one because I want to know what happens to Sean next!
A fun and clever read for tweens and teens--especially young boys. Sean Dirts is a likeable kid with good friends, a stable family, and of course as with any good adventure story, bullies, magic, and bad guys. Sean's character and confidence develops, which makes this a healthy and relatable read.
I am not a person of many words, but I just wanted to say that I throughly enjoyed reading this book. Sean’s adventure was a fun one to follow and I cannot wait to see where Don will take Sean and in future books!
Absolutely recommend! My family and I listened to it on a road trip and the whole family loved it! The story is engaging and so creative. Love the author’s voice, both written style and audio - excellent audiobook! Also love that the language is intelligent, great reading for all ages. We are all ready for the next installment and wondering when we can get more Sean Dirts! Side note: my favorite thing about this book is that it has had my 12 yo announcing around the house frequently and randomly to no one in particular, “Sean Dirts by Don Shirts!” He just loves to say it so much cuz it’s so clever and fun to say! Well done!
We listened to Sean Dirts and the Hidden City as a family. My children ages 8 to 15 loved it! it was a fun and exciting tale for all of us with plenty of twists to keep us on our toes.
This book kept my attention from beginning to end and left me hoping this will be a series and there are more to come. Enjoyed it very much! I would definately recommend it for young as well as older readers.

I hadn’t read any young adult novels in a while – I chose Sean Dirts: Hidden City out of simple curiosity when the title character’s play on the author’s name caught my attention.
I ended up finishing it in a single sitting. It’s that kind of book—the kind you think you’ll read a few chapters of before bed and suddenly it’s 2am and you’re wondering how the author made you care so much about a kid who wakes up the size of a Crayola.
The premise is bold: Sean and his family are shrunk to pocket-size and taken to a hidden micro-community for a two-year social experiment. What starts off as a fun twist on the "new kid in a strange place" trope quickly becomes something more layered. There’s a real sense of worldbuilding here, with everything from improvised housing and tiny schools to a system of mysterious superpowers (yes, really). Somehow, it all works.
Sean himself is a standout. He’s not a stock hero. He’s moody, hesitant, and way more relatable because of it. His friendships—with the cocky Luke, the thoughtful Charlie, and the quietly capable Summer—feel natural, with banter that actually sounds like kids talking. The book's humor is well-timed and not overplayed, and the scenes with Sean’s younger siblings, especially Nathan discovering his “super strength,” add a nice balance of chaos and warmth.
One of the book’s more surprising strengths is how it handles scale and environment. Seeing ordinary things—grains of dirt, leaves, cereal flakes—become giant obstacles gives the story a fresh sense of tension and discovery. The author clearly had fun imagining how life would work at this scale, and it’s infectious.
There are also hints of deeper mystery layered in—secrets being kept, a possibly untrustworthy adult or two, and a society that seems cheerful on the surface but may be hiding more than it lets on. That’s where the story really caught me off guard; it isn’t just a cutesy adventure. There are real stakes, even if the characters are no taller than a soup can.
This is the kind of middle-grade fiction that respects its audience: adventurous but not chaotic, funny without being flippant, and smart without trying too hard. I’ll definitely be watching for a sequel.
It takes a special kind of book to interest both a mom and a 10 year old boy. Don Shirts does just that with this book. We both were intrigued from beginning to end. And we wanted to know what would happen next!
Sean Dirts and his family have been smalled. They've headed to a place called Lilliput where everyone is small. And everyone gets a special power. Some get super hearing, some are fast, and some have other talents. Sean's whole family gets something, but Sean doesn't. And when he finally does, he has to keep it a secret.
I loved so many things about this book. The way the author makes each of his characters so individual, especially with their talents, is such a great parallel to how we are all different, but all needed as well. I loved the way this tiny city works to help each other. And when everything seems to be in turmoil, they pull together even more.
This is such a great book! I hope we get to know more about what happens to Sean and Lilliput!
I was sent an e-copy of Sean Dirts and the Hidden City by the author. All opinions are my own.
Sean Dirts and the Hidden City by Don Shirts is a thrilling story that masterfully blends adventure, self-discovery, and the challenges of fitting in. Sean Dirts, waking up to find himself only six inches tall, faces a new reality in an experimental village where superpowers are the norm. As the only one without visible abilities, Sean endures bullying and isolation, but his journey takes a dramatic turn when he uncovers his unique power—one that others covet.
This novel explores themes of resilience and courage as Sean learns to embrace his differences and protect those around him. With vivid world-building, dynamic characters, and a suspenseful narrative, it’s a story that keeps readers hooked until the final page.
Perfect for fans of young adult fantasy and tales of underdogs triumphing against the odds, Sean Dirts and the Hidden City is an inspiring and imaginative adventure filled with heart and heroism.
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. Honestly, I loved this book! After reading it through the first time, I then obtained it on audible and listened to it with my kids. My kids are all teenagers and they loved the book as well. Such a fun, imaginative, magical adventure. The adventure started on the first page and never stopped. Not only is it a fun adventure, but it teaches as you read; lessons of loyalty and friendship among many others. I’m excited for whatever comes next! As a therapist for adolescents, I’ve already recommended this book to several clients as themes in this book hit home with things they are working through in their own lives.
It might also be good to note that the audio version is read by the author himself and, for me, that always makes it more fun!
I'm always in the looking for fun, clean, and interesting books and audio books that I can cycle through while on the go. This is a great story with well-written characters and keeps me going strong all the way through. I love the dad joke style of punny humor! This joins my collection with the Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Star Wars, and Star Trek series. I can't wait for more adventures with Sean Dirts!
I really enjoyed this book for its captivating story and rich, imaginative world. The characters are compelling and well-developed, drawing you into their journey from the very first page. The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat, making it impossible to put down. It's a perfect blend of mystery, adventure, and excitement. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good adventure!
I wish this book had been around when I was a kid! I would've read this alongside Fablehaven and Harry Potter. This book is full of heart, the fun shenanigans a tiny person would get up to, and most of all: a great story, a big mystery and just EPIC fight and battle scenes. This story is full of heart, and the best part is that the audiobook is narrated by the author himself! I can't wait for my kids to get a little bit older so I can read this to them.
You know how there's often one line in a book that sticks out and makes you say, "Okay, I'm glad I read this!" When I read, "Hey, maybe you'll have a super colon to digest that pea," I laughed out loud. As a scientist, I liked the premise of shrinking people to consider such an approach for saving resources. Clever and creative. Nice work, Don!
I thought this was a super fun book. When it ended I couldn't believe it, I can't wait for the next one! I am so happy that the characters felt real. It bothers me a little then they have younger kids be completely oblivious to what is going on but this book had them just right I think. (I also really like the name Sean Dirts by Don Shirts. Makes me laugh to myself)
Such a great middle grade fantasy book that all ages can enjoy. I loved how engaging it was. I am eager to read the next book because of how well the author did in tying together all the details/tension that lead up to the bigger picture. I also loved the way the author has these really wholesome themes placed between the humor and action. It gives the story a flow that I really enjoyed.
This is such a fun book! I read it with my family and it was honestly a great read! The vocabulary isn’t too young and has a story line that captivates all readers. Sean Dirts and his friends have amazing character development and you make a connection to them. It starts off great and is a paced amazingly well. I am looking forward for the next book to come out!
Wonderful novel! I met the author at an event I attended with my daughter and absolutely loved the concept as explained by the author himself. I purchased the book and the audio book as well and it is narrated by the author as well. Amazing story telling and you feel like you are right there witnessing the adventures with Sean Dirt and his friends. I will be recommending this book to friends.
A fun adventure for all ages! I really enjoyed reading Sean Dirts and the Hidden City. This story made me laugh out loud, get caught up in the action and hope for the underdogs. A fun ride with a well written fantasy adventure.
Don is an old neighbor of mine, I’m so proud of him, I was privileged to get to listen to this book. Don did an amazing job, I couldn’t stop listening. I ended up buying the book so my family can read it. Can’t wait for the next book.
My 11-YO son and I read this aloud together as part of our nighttime routine. He definitely found the story line engaging. We got hung up on some of the sentence structure and dialogue tags a few times, but overall, it reads well and kept my son hooked.
Sean Dirts and the Hidden City is an amazing journey through a hidden city full of wonder and excitement. This story encourages kids to embrace bravery and be open and curious. The picture brings the story to life. Perfect for young readers.
I'm always on the lookout for good books that I would let my children read. This is definitely one of them. Well written, good plot, comedic, and overall enjoyable. I wish there was a sequel.
Worth reading! Well written, imaginative, and an all-around fun read for adults too. The story grabbed my attention and kept it right to the end. I can't wait for the next one in the series!
