The old , great courageous gang from two previous novels by the amusing Jules Verne, From the Earth to the Moon and Round the Moon...
Are back, of the famous Baltimore Gun Club, they have an even more ambitious, better, ( yet quite dangerous many will say) brilliant idea or is it? Change the tilt of the Earth's axis in order to give the North Pole nicer weather, since Impey Barbicane is president of the club and the organizer, Captain Nicholl, the explosive expert and the brains behind the scheme J.T. Maston, a mathematical wizard what can go wrong. Having earlier bought the large, unclaimed unseen worthless frozen domain from the U. S. government at a dubious auction. People and newspapers around the world laughed at these morons, spending 800,000 dollars for such a place which nobody has ever reached in 1889, the time this was written. Mrs. Evelina Scorbitt 45, a very wealthy widow has given these gentlemen her money for the wild endeavor, particularly Mr. Maston, she has warm feeling for the one -armed genius a Civil War veteran, not unusual for that era numerous others had also loss a limb or two. Truth be told , the lady would do anything for the bachelor and he a little uneasy. . . still she is a good looking woman and Maston a lonely man. The American public greets the plan at first enthusiastically, especially when they get a piece of the action for a price of course , an amazing 15 million all told raised everyone will become fabulously rich from coal mines, that industry depends on then never mind the dirty air, a little smoke doesn't hurt anything and ...hopefully it wouldl be found soon when the ice melts...and land is underneath. Nevertheless newspapers begin to ask important questions, what happens when the water rises and engulfs coastal cities, while some nations could be hundreds of feet below the sea surface, millions might perish if they can't get away from on -rushing tides devastating the Earth, civilization in parallel. Mr. Barbicane, Mr. Nicholl flee quickly for their lives as angry, large fickle crowds threaten a lynching , Maston is hidden by the anxious Mrs. Scorbitt in her huge mansion; to a secret place on the equator the others arrive where a gigantic cannon will send into space a vast missile going south, the terrible concussion devastating everything in its path ... to make their dream a reality...or is it a nightmare? A story that is still relevant today, how far can we go to adjust the planet...
For our comfort and benefit without destroying it and ourselves. My 25th Jules Verne book, the most from any author...he makes me smile.

My Japanese/French friend Yukie is visiting tomorrow from her new home town of Nantes. By association of ideas, that reminded me first of Jules Verne, Nantes's most famous son, and then of this bizarre sequel to From the Earth to the Moon.

Everyone knows the story of the first book: the manic Gun Club build a giant cannon which projects a steam-punk spaceship into an orbit that takes it round the Moon and back home again. This one is rather more obscure, though when I was reading my way through Verne as a nine year old it was a favourite. The Gun Club have dazzled the world with their lunar exploit, but now they need something even bigger to keep people's attention. As you see in Apollo 13, this prediction was spot-on: the fickle public quickly got bored with space flight, and only woke up when it looked like a mission was about to go horribly wrong.

Luckily for all of us, NASA didn't come up with anything as crazy as what happens here. Newton's Third Law, muse the amiable gun lunatics: equal and opposite reaction. You normally think of a gun as something used to throw a projectile. But the momentum imparted by the recoil is exactly as large. Suppose you had a really big gun. Maybe that recoil would be enough to change the axis of rotation of the Earth? And once they've got hold of the idea that this could be technically feasible, they immediately come up with a reason for doing it. You could flip the Earth's axis so that it was no longer at an inclination to the orbital plane. Then, hey, not only would you get rid of those pesky seasons, but you'd also move the North Pole to a place where you might be able to mine its mineral deposits! Must be a win. When can we get started?

At age 9, I read the novel straight: the Gun Club are lovable rogues, possibly a little too impetuous for their own good, but basically on the side of the angels. The horrified citizens who try to stop them from carrying out this insane scheme are kind of boring. Okay, I suppose it's dangerous, but you never get anywhere without taking a few risks. Don't they see how damn cool is? I should re-read the book and find out whether it was actually a satire. It ought to be. But, given how much Verne loved technology in all its forms, I wouldn't bet on it.

This year, I decided to read as many classics as I can, and so far, this choice has been very amusing. Even in the case of this story, which was the ultimate roller coaster, making me either turn the pages at an alarming pace or roll my eyes at the overwhelming descriptions of mathematics, physics and technical terms, I still found myself enjoying it.

This follows the story of the famous Baltimore's Gun Club, which tried to change the axis of the earth. If this sounds weird enough, wait until you see how greatly Verne manages to frame the story with real scientific findings, and even predicts a lot of climate change reactions that we fear today. The characters in this were all quite eccentric and obsessed with their job, as Verne's characters usually are, and I really liked that there was a major female character, even though her portrayal was a bit "stereotypical". As always, I had some problems with a few opinions portrayed in this, but considering the era, it was still interesting.

The plot had a few twists I did not expect, which is why despite the tiring descriptions, I did enjoy it. In fact, the last twist was absolutely incredible, and I should have seen it coming, but still didn't, considering I wasn't used to this kind of endings in Verne's books.

Overall, my classics readings this year are going well, and it makes me really happy ♥ Please, take care of yourselves and stay safe ♥ Until the next review, keep reading ♥

One of the more obscure books by the great French author Jules Verne (1828-1905), its original title is "Sans Dessus Dessous" ( Upside- Down) and it was published in 1889. In this story, we have the return of the Baltimore Gun Club, who gained fame by sending men into orbit around the Moon by shooting them in a shell out of a huge cannon ( positioned in Florida). This time, they want to achieve an even more ambitious engineering feat. They plan to build an even bigger cannon and cause an explosion at just the right spot to shift the axis of the world. Of course, first, they purchased the North Pole. How they could get away with that is hard to believe in itself. But, by moving the axis, they believed that this would melt the polar area enough that it would make huge coal deposits accessible. Never mind the flooding that would result ( for some reason, it's estimated that much of Asia would go underwater--but I'm sure they felt that it's a small price to pay for an almost unlimited supply of coal. Scott Pruitt would love it!) Anyway, it's a fast read and fun, although one of the more far-fetched stories I've read in a long time. I think it's interesting that here Verne is pointing out the dark side of the Victorian "idea of progress."

A most interesting, thought provoking tale, I also read it under the title of 'Topsy Turvy'. Highlights the exploits of Barbicane and the Baltimore gun club previously heard of in the tale 'From the Earth to the Moon'...

This is a short book, one I read at a single sitting. It was a really exciting thriller, however! I recommend it for all teens and adults who want to be on the edge of your seat for the entire reading time! I thought of an alternate ending, which would have been humorous! (Ask me if interested.)

Another of Verne's rather interesting and thought provoking tales. Here we meet Baltimore Gun Club President Barbicaine once again together with other characters such as JT Maston and Mrs Scorbitt...
So what's the plot? well, altering the earth's orbit, to change the climate of the Arctic region...
Good read!!

Herkese keyifli okumalar!

Everyone should be able to find something to hate in this book, Corporate greed almost destroys our planet, Science gone wild almost annihilates humanity, Private enterprise steals a march on Government, Government erases personal rights for the collective good. So many chances to stir up political agendas. Yet Verne takes all these issues mixes in a few irascible and lovable characters and you have a marvelously silly tale.
As usual he uses many true facts, right along with his fanciful theories. This time it was geography. It certainly helped to have a good map handy when you read this book.
The best part of is how Verne gets the world out the scrape his scientist get it into. Because his setting is the 'real' world and not a made up one, there always has to be return to normal. Just wait till you see what this one is.
Oh, be sure to read it after From the Earth to the Moon . This is the sequel.

More a political satire than a straightforward adventure story.
The Baltimore gun club buy the north pole.
They know the place is just crazy with coal and they have figured out a way to get at it and meet the world's energy needs for the next couple centuries.

Then they reveal their brilliant strategy and the world goes crazy.

Not as cutting or clever as say 'The Mouse that Roared', but Verne gently pokes fun at international relationships and even at the racism of the time.

Do wish he had told more of the story through character interaction, as he tends to just tell us what's going on rather than show us.
The Gun Club is a fun bunch of characters, so I wish they'd done more.

Also wish Verne had done more books about them.

So - The Gun Club seems to think that anything can be accomplished by firing a gun. In 'The Moon Voyage' a gun shot voyagers out to space to explore the moon....... in this work, the explosion of a gun is supposed to rectify the Earth's tilt on its axis........ What are you on, Gun Club.

I fell in love with From the Earth to the Moon for how bro-ish it came across. Then Jules Verne decided Impey Barbicaine and company should have sequels. When I last heard from them, Impey, Capt. Nicholls, and our Frenchman went down to Florida to be blasted from a ginormous gun-rocket. Somehow "falling back to earth" they landed in the ocean playing board games until a naval ship rescued them. But, you know, they needed to top that stunt.

So, when several nations gather to make bids on the North Pole, it's the Baltimore Gun Club that gets the winning bid. Their plan: build an even more ginormous gun-rocket that will alter the axis of the earth, making planet warmer, therefore allowing them to get at what they think are deep untapped coal mines.

Of course, everyone on the planet gets kind of worried at this idea. Impey and the Captain flee imprisonment, leaving their secretary, Maston, to take the brunt of the wrath, so they take advantage of the local people of Mount Kilimanjaro, burrowing into the earth to make a crazy large gun-rocket. However, thanks (?) to Maston being struck by lighting during a phone call (yep) the calculation for tilting the axis was off and the world stayed as is - except for the nearby area which was completely destroyed.

Even though these were written by a Victorian-era Frenchman, these are still some of the most modern 'Murica books.

Jules Verne in The Earth Turned Upside Down (also called The Purchase of the North Pole and Topsy-Turvy) returns to the Baltimore Gun Club (From the Earth to the Moon and Around the Moon), which now proposes something even more outrageous than a cannon projectile aimed at the moon: This time, the irrepressible Impey Barbicane and J-T Matson plan to change the north pole by permanently changing the rotation of the earth by some 27 degrees so that the North Pole ice could melt, and the Baltimore Gun Club could own the rights to all the coal and iron they would mine.

Of course, millions of people would drown by the displacement of the oceans, including China, India, and parts of South America, but that is secondary to the mining rights to the North Pole. Who would shed a tear for them?

Barbicane and Matson envision another giant cannon, this time consisting of the African volcano at Kilimanjaro, which would have a giant steel barrel shoved down its center and loaded with a special alternative to gun-cotton called dyna-mix. The projectile would go into orbit around the earth.

I won't give away what happens. Needless to say, China and India are not under water today, so it must not have worked.

A few of the large number of short novels written by Jules Verne are still very well known, but this is not one of these. It's a strange sequel to the much more famous From the Earth to the Moon, where the Baltimore Gun Club attempt to change the rotation of the earth using a huge gun, with the aim of making the poles temperate regions, allowing the exploitation of coal there. The physics is very suspect, especially taking into account the devastation to life on Earth; the realities of the fluid dynamics of such an explosion is noticed by Verne, but would have been far more destructive.

To give it a positive spin, it could be read as a warning of the potential stupidity of scientists and engineers when they don't look at the big picture; a satirical story.

Interesting to read, but not really enjoyable.

An amusing book. I read the version translated by Sophie Lewis, and I think she did a fantastic job with the translation. The book itself is very much a charming product of its time, for instance the bombastic pronouncements and ironclad belief in the gentle elan of "modern" times justifying the US refusal to torture J-T Maston. Some language used is dated and "politically incorrect", but no more so than that of an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, and in no way detracts from an otherwise good novel.

The only thing preventing me from giving this five stars is that the "surprise" plot twist that saves the day in this book is conceptually very similar to the famous one in Around the World in 80 Days.

It is one of the least inspiring books of Jules Verne. Having said that, it still holds its didactic standards regarding the updated knowledge on the scientific evolution of its era. Also, despite its lack of philosophical background, the book manages to be of good use as teaching material for elementary school students, due to the demonstrated variety of informations, regarding physics, chemistry, geology and geography. Finally, regarding the moral standards it stands for, Verne reproduces in a vulgar way the kantian ethics on love and power. On our current western standards, the reading is a rather conservative material.
