He thought he’d forget her. He was wrong. When a battle-hardened warrior returns home from years of campaigning, he discovers that the lass he left behind never married—a lass who will be his undoing. Second chance and redemption on Medieval Isle of Mull.

After a decade campaigning against the English, Loch Maclean returns to the Isle of Mull to find his father dead and his lands in disarray. Cattle thieving is rife, and the isle’s clans are at each other’s throats. Loch’s got his work cut out for him—but he’s distracted by a woman from his past.

Mairi Macquarie is even more beguiling than he remembers, only these days she’s no longer innocent and biddable. These days, she’s got no time for him at all. Or so it seems.

Mairi was heartbroken when the laird’s roguish son went off to war and never came home. She got on with her life and tried to forget him. But now he’s back, battle-hardened, and cynical—and even more dangerous than ever.

The attraction between Loch and Mairi burns hotter than a Beltane fire, yet they both are looking for different things. He wants her to warm his bed, but what she wants is love.

And neither is prepared to compromise.

"I’m worth more than the crumbs ye throw me … I always was.”

So, hmm. I usually enjoy Ms. Castel's stories, and even when I don't they're usually still a solid two star read for me. However, I have to admit this one was very disappointing for me. To the point I had to make myself finish it. 😬

Will I continue reading Ms. Castel's books? Of course. Am I surprised I didn't like this one, like, at all? Definitely! And tbh I can't help but place all the blame for my dislike and lack of enjoyment on the hero Loch.

Rant incoming... 🥴

From the very beginning I didn't like Loch. Which tbh isn't that unusual because that's just how it is with some books, yeah? But once the first handful of introductory chapters passed and he showed no signs of improvement in his thoughts of actions? Well, needless to say I instantly wary.

Truth be told, Loch was a horrible person. He was self-centered, insensitive, shortsighted, selfish, and had the emotional range of piece of cardboard. He treated his own sister like garbage, and because of his stubborn ignorance she nearly died from depression over the choices he made regarding her future. Not to forget he had had a fling with the innkeeper's daughter (the heroine Mairi) in the local village ten years before, then he very easily walked away from her tears and pleas not to leave when he decided to join The Bruce fighting the English. In his own thoughts he admitted to not giving Mairi a second thought when he left, nor the entire time he was gone. That he slept with other women while away as well. That he, at the time of his departure, refused to let himself be snared in Mairi's "web" so to speak. He saw emotions as a weakness and somehow had no ability in truly feeling them himself. He was only focused on his ambitions, his feelings, his future that quite literally no one else mattered or registered on his radar.

Loch was straight up callous, especially to the people who cared about him. He didn't even write to his sister or father while he was away. Ten years! And his own mother passed during that time, and toward the end of the book when speaking with his sister he even admitted (once again) to having never spared the woman who birthed him a thought in all this time when his sister spoke of it only being five years since she passed and show she missed her still. Seriously??

Truly I was just so DONE with his character. I've read some depraved and twisted romances where the heroes in them have been beyond redemption, straight villains even but there was always something redeemable about them because of how they treated their woman or even siblings. But Loch? Nah. He was outright unlikeable and his supposed "evolvement" was too little too late and didn't have any sort of emotional impact on the story or the reader. And it was far too obvious it only occured because the book was wrapping up and we needed to make him somewhat passable as a hero to finish with the HEA. It was all a little too convenient and didn't ease into the his sudden change of character.

Loch didn't really evolve though. He got all sad after reading a letter from his father (which he stubbornly chose to not read for the three months he'd been home) and then got teary eyed over learning his father kept tabs on him and was proud of to call him son. Then, and only then did the fool change his decision regarding his sisters future and that was ONLY because his father's letter outright warned against doing the exact thing he had done. Was I suppose to be impressed by that? His sister was so unhappy and depressed she was wasting away and yet that wasn't good enough to change his mind? 😤

And then he realizes all the jibes Mairi threw at him since his return home were true. Imagine that?! And then somewhere between then and the end he decides well gee he actually loves Mairi after all, that he doesn't want to lose her and is scared about making himself vulnerable to her but decides to ask her to marry him in front of everyone in her inn anyway because he doesn't want anyone else to have her. Truly it was the most underwhelming scene I've read in a long time.

Worse was Mairi SHOULD have questioned his change of heart. She should have said "I need to think on it," at the very least. But no, this is a HEA we're setting up so of course she says yes, they boink like bunnies and all is forgiven!!

Which also brings me to finally say I didn't like the heroine Mairi either. Although she seemed promising in the early chapters she took a dive once she fell back into bed with Loch. She came across as a silly school girl with a crush, and she knew she was acting like a fool too. How she couldn't see how little Loch thought of her and how he only came to her out of familiarity and close proximity...it honestly baffles me.

I DID really love when she finally told him off but with it coming in at the 70% mark it was just too late for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Which brings me to probably the most baffling part of this entire story: Why did Loch and Mairi ever get together????

Truly, I have no idea how Loch and Mairi got together the first time. We're never told or offered flashbacks of any kind. To me from the way they both spoke of their past relationship, it sounded a lot like a fling based off sexual attraction. I never felt there were any deeper feelings from either side, despite Mairi trying to claim otherwise. It even sounded as if they had both been virgins when they got together (tho idk if that's true about Loch), but at eighteen and twenty years old respectively I can't imagine that being each other's firsts built the foundation for a deep abiding love. To me, it didn't seem like they had anything romantic between them then or now. They had no chemistry together, they were of different classes with him being the laird's son yet it's never explained how they met or how they began their romance. And I certainly didn't understand WHY either gravitated back to one another once Loch returned other than familiarity and close proximity.

So, I quite frankly I wasn't buying that they had some deep all enduring romance in their past, especially with how selfish Loch was and how little he thought of Mairi or her feelings. Nor did I buy that they had always loved one another or even fell back in love once he returned. It was all so very shallow to me.

I certainly didn't believe any word he said when he confessed his love to Mairi and asked her to be his wife. Not one bit. I don't think it had even been a week since he suddenly realized he'd been a piece of shit to everyone who cared for him and yet miraculously I'm supposed to believe he truly understands how awful and selfish he was? That he was earnest in with his promises to change and be better? And that he was capable of real love? Mhm. Sure, buddy! Actions speak louder than words!

And somehow, Loch was able to decide so easily to marry the village innkeeper with no repercussions?? Like, he didn't even consider looking for a bride in another clan, not even once. Didn't struggle over what he wanted to do over what he should do. Usually that's the norm, ya know? But Mairi was the only one to ever mention such an idea to the reader when assuming he'd have to marry a woman of equal standing. And yet Loch decided to marry Mairi and apparently had no issues from his clansmen or anyone arguing that he could make a marriage alliance himself like he tried to force on his sister.

So, cool I guess?

Anyway...Obviously I didn't like it. I don't even think I care enough to read the rest of the series either which makes me sad tbh. Because not one character was interesting and everything was just so bleak.. I dunno the vibe was weird with this one for me. I just never connected to any of them or the plot.

I was left feeling rather disappointed with this story. There was zero connection between the MC's, zero feels and Loch is as thick as mince. Not what I want to read in a main character 🤷🏼‍♀️

I love the time period in which its set and the world building.

I feel like Lochs redemption arc wasn't good enough. I needed more!! What do you mean all is forgiven, just handover your fathers lifework, happy ending within a day! After the earlier betrayal?? She put too much trust in this man and there was not enough grovelling.

Besides that, I read it all in one day. I was invested and enjoyed reading it, i just didn’t agree!!.

Loch was a dumb b*tch for a majority of the book. Mairi gave into him way too easily and gave up her father's inn even easier. 😬

The Lass He Left behind
Jayne Castel
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loch Maclean was sure he would forget her. He was so wrong. When he returns home after years of campaigning, he finds out that the lovely lass he left behind never married.

Loch returns to the Isle of Mull only to find his father dead and his lands in one heck of a mess. Cattle thieving is rife, and it seems all of the clans on the Isle are after each other for one thing or another. Loch's definitely got got his work cut out for him this time, but it's hard when he's distracted by a special woman from his past.

Mairi Macquarie is even more breathtaking than he remembers. The only difference is that she is no longer innocent nor as easy to get along with. She's gone on with her own life and done everything she could to forget Loch. But now he's back beyond battle hardened and even more dangerous than ever.

Jayne Castel is one of my go-to authors for this reason right here. Her books captivate me from the start until the very finish, and even then, I'm still thinking about them. The characters were well written and had so much life to them. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. This was one heck of a way to start the series, and I, for one, really enjoyed this book. Ms. Castel has so much talent, and it flows from her when she writes her books. Ms. Castel, this book was phenomenal, and I truly enjoyed it.

Look I’m not here to do verbal judo with anyone. I’m just here to tell you the most basic experience that one person such I, can have or feel from reading such a profound book. And with that, here we go. The Lass He Left Behind. Alright everyone add this one to your TBR list.
Loch and Mairi’s love story is a good one. This book is so good that once I finished reading it, I totally convinced myself to jump online, and buy the book immediately. It’s in my basket right now. Waiting on me to add more books. You know how that goes.
To start off. The writer did the most splendid job of having the readers become familiar with the characters through their own brief bio. These bits of familiarities with the characters are not copious amounts of information, but enough to give each character that exciting vitality to the story. Using this method when describing the character is also helpful for the readers to develop a connection with them, as well as understand what motivates the characters to make that journey through the story.
Really?, you ask. How so? Well its this. There are selected characters who have defining moments in the book.
It’s either by making huge decisions during times of importance. Helping out one’s fellow clansmen. Being that shoulder to lean on. Or making that ultimate sacrifice for the common good. I will say that the characters were quite powerful in their role.
Through their dialogue and actions it almost seemed that they came alive right off the pages. The main characters, particularly Loch, Mairi, Hamish, Finn, Alison,Tor, Jack and Astrid were extraordinary. I could tell that the writer took special care in creating these characters, for the exciting and intense scenes surrounding the plot, through how the story involves. As I continued reading the book, it was clear to me that Loch is the one that grew the most. During his moments in the book the writer focused on, man versus man.
Man becoming a true leader. Man becoming a trustworthy lover. Psst. Hey! Do you want to know the story that really moved me the most, though? It’s the one between Loch and Astrid.
Their story pulled at my tear ducts. UGH! The brother and sister relationship was clearly the most profound moment for both people. It’s these scenes I believe that the writer really put her foot in it. Those of you should know what I mean by that.
If you don’t, you better ask somebody. As I was saying. These moments were so raw, so real, and so touching. Back to Loch, whew Lord! Ladies, the writer did not skimp when she describe the tall attractive Scottish Laird and warrior.
You need to read the section where he’s walking down the path, towards his castle. The wind is whipping at his long hair. He’s big. He’s magnificent. He has that warrior appeal that makes any woman want to cling on to him like a baby chimp, hanging on to her mama. Read the book. You will understand. “ Ahem”. If the door is a rocking. Don’t bother coming in.
Each step that Loch takes, he believes that he’s getting closer to his reason for living. Mairi is the female main character whose very intelligent. Through the eyes of her cousin Alison, Mairi is strong and truly brave, as she makes her way in a world dominated by men. I love that her character was created with grit and a sharp mind. A strong Lass she is you might say.
Together Loch and Mairis love story intertwine with the tragic and harsh realities of clan life. And with a possible war banging at the Durat castle doors. Readers the book is just phenomenal. The writing in this book is something that you can respect and appreciate. The words have the ability to pull your mind.
Pull your soul. Pull your whole being to the Isle of Mull. This is an easy page turner that will not let you sleep until you have read the last word. The characters are positively outstanding and flawlessly captivating. As for the story/ plot and sub-plot, it is quite compelling. There simply is no other way to make this book feel so very real, as to how the writer formulated such a beautiful and remarkable love story. I give this story two snaps and a, ‘this author’s writing, I shall never forget.” Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!

This is a second chance romance. Will Mairi Macquarie give Loch Maclean a second chance when he ripped out her innocent heart ten years ago? Did Loch destroy any chance to win the woman who has been in love with him since she was eighteen years old? Read the first book in Jayne Castel's new series The Rogues of Mull.

Scottish Highlands, 1314

Loch Maclean is a self-centered heartless warrior, who went off to fight the English for King Robert the Bruce ten years ago. During this time he had never come back to visit his clan, father, sister or Mairi Macquarie, the lass he left behind. Loch had never even sent a letter or brief note to his father, sister or Mairi. He only cares about his own needs and never thought about anyone else! This was while he was campaigning for Scotland’s cause and making a name for himself.

King Robert the Bruce and his warriors won the Battle at Bannockburn against the English, so it was time to return home. Loch comes home expecting everything to be the same as it was a decade ago. Except he discovers his father is dead and the lass he left behind had never married, except Mairi Macquarie is even more beautiful than he remembered!

Loch expects Mairi to be waiting for him with open arms, except she wants nothing to do with Loch. On top of that he discovers his father is dead, the enemy clan The Mackinnon’s are up to their evil mischief again stealing Maclean clan property and livestock, however his clan wants something done about it!

Loch immediately becomes Laird and starts lording it over to everyone! He tries to force his own sister to marry their bitter enemy Laird Mackinnon. Thinking a marriage will solve all his clan’s problems. Not realizing what a monster and how cruel Laird Mackinnon truly is!

Even though Loch knows the horrific actions this man has done in the past. He is throwing his sister in a den of my vipers only trying to do a quick fix and create a name for himself. Not realizing the type of life he is forcing his sister into! However nobody wants this match especially his sister and his cousin Jack. His cousin Jack has seen this man’s brutality and no matter what he says Loch won’t listen until it is too nearly too late!

Mairi Macquarie has always loved Loch, but he only uses her for his own selfish desires. He broke her heart ten years ago and she is not going to allow him to do it again! She ignores him as her father recently died and she is busy running their tavern and Inn with her cousin Alison. Now her cousin is sweet on one of the young men that came back with Loch after fighting for Scotland’s cause.

When Mairi starts to let her guard down and opens her heart again, she soon realizes Loch hasn’t changed and is exactly the same selfish, disrespectful, and egotistical man he was ten years ago! Mairi has had enough as this time it is a lot more painful and nearly destroys her! Enough is enough Mairi feels, now wants nothing to do with Loch Maclean no matter what his title is!

Is it even possible for Loch to realize his mistakes and apologize to the people he has hurt and ask for their forgiveness? Will Mairi ever forgive Loch or are her wounds too deep and raw? Shall she finally move on and discover there are other men in the sea besides Loch Maclean? Shall Loch be able to redeem himself or is his ego so big he can’t even see his faults and mistakes? Is it too little-too late for Loch and Mairi? Definitely read and find out! I will never tell, but it is definitely an extraordinary story not to be missed which I highly recommend!

This is another book that just blew me by my go-to-author Jayne Castel. I had a difficult time liking this hero to be honest. My heart definitely was breaking for the heroine, as this was definitely an emotional read for me. So have those tissues ready! Another Castel book that I highly recommend and I can’t wait to read Jack and Tara’s story, which is next in this fabulous series titled “The Bride He Stole.”

A wonderful start to the new series! The plot is very good and I always enjoy the narrative style of the author. Her writing is so authentic, so true to detail, that I felt like I was right in the middle of it. The characters are very well developed. Mairi is an admirable personality, independent, warm and strong. Loch is a contradictory character. He is overwhelmed by his new responsibilities and emotions, and his callous, arrogant and self-centered manner was quite infuriating. There were a few moments when I wanted to jump into the book and strangle him for his stupid behavior.
The steamy chemistry between them was great and I enjoyed their banter and battles of will.

I cannot wait for Jack‘s story to come out!

After spending the last 10 years of his life fighting alongside The Bruce, Loch Maclean returns home to the Isle of Mull to find that his father has died shortly before his arrival and he is now the new clan-chief.

One of the first people he meets upon his return is Mairi, his former lover whom he still finds attractive but hasn’t thought a lot about while he was away.

Mairi is now the innkeeper after her father‘s death. Although she’s still attracted by Loch, she can’t forgive him that he left her heartbroken, without remorse and tossed her away without a backward glance. She won’t give in to his seductive ways…

If you like authentic Scottish medieval stories with heroes in dire need to be reformed and indomitable heroines, you are sure to love this book!

Thank you to Booksprout and Jayne Castel for a free ARC copy of The Lass He Left Behind in exchange for a fair and honest review.

A new book. A new clan. A new historical romance to emotionally knock us off our feet and glue us back together from the incredible imagination of Jayne Castel, who is one of my favourite go-to-authors of historical romance. Her writing draws the reader into a visual feast for the imagination of the untamed landscape of the Scottish Highlands & Islands of the medieval era – when Scotland fought for its very existence heeding the call of the Bruce. With strong character voices and action-packed, emotive storytelling that will put your heart through a wringer at least once or twice in the book.

Jayne Castel never fails to write distinctive, memorable characters in her books. Her characters are as varied as the sun and moon – like the saying goes ‘variety is the spice of life.’ Delighted to get some highland historical hunks with the Macleans to Hate with the Macleans of Mull. Loch MacLean is arrogant, self-centered, and entitled with a bit of a god-complex. Plenty for him to work on in his character arc of redemption to win the heart of the woman he loves.
And a heroine to cheer for in Mairi Macquarie. Mairi, you go girl! Kick the Laird to the curb and make him beg, grovel, and chase after he broke your heart! She leaps off the page, bold and colourful with her strength of heart, a strong sense of self and vulnerability buried deep down in her soul.

Another story full of clan conflicts, sizzling tension, and a female protagonist with a ‘not-if-you-where-the-last-man-on-earth-my-laird’ attitude and she makes the Laird work to win her heart! If you love the vibes of the early Outlander books (books 1 and 2), I recommend you pick up the historical romances by Jayne Castel. I can promise you will get strong female protagonists who know their minds, gorgeous male clansmen with buckets of flaws but love as deep as the turbulent North Sea, and a romance story to keep you on a dirk’s edge.

Oh, I like this one! The ‘blood, guts and gore’ level is very low and the steam level is frantic and exciting. Loch, his cousin Jack, and their friend Finn returned home after a decade of fighting the English, and they brought their protege Tor with them. Loch returned to find that his father, the Maclean Clan-Chief, had died four days ago and that his sister Astrid had had a heavy hand in running the clan. Not only that, but Kendric Mackinnon whose clan bordered theirs, had been stealing cattle, destroying fields, fishing in their waters and causing lots of trouble. It was believed that his aim was to destroy the Maclean holdings and take over the whole Isle of Mull. Add to that Loch’s reacquaintance with, and lust for Miari, who had been his lover before he left, and he, as the new Clan-Chief, has got a lot on his plate. Loch’s ego and arrogance encourage him to make quite a few mistakes as he tries to negotiate peace and fulfil his new role. The marriage of his protege, a set down from Mairi, Astrid’s illness, and a missive left for him by his dying father, inspire Loch to take a good hard look at himself and make some changes. This story has strong displays of emotion, danger, uneasy undercurrents and a wonderful cast of characters. And the best part is that this is just the beginning….there are at least two more books to come!.

A Sensual Scottish Romance Set in the Hebrides

Set in the 14th century on the Isle of Mull, this is book one in the Rogues of Mull trilogy. It’s the story of Loch Maclean and Mairi Macquarie who were lovers at one time. When Loch, the eldest son of the Maclean chief, went off to fight with Robert the Bruce, he left Mairi behind, without a backward glance, breaking her heart.

He returns a decade later to find his father, the chief, dead and Mairi still single but angry at his betrayal. He shrugs and goes on about his business, assuming his role as the new chief. After all, he has treacherous MacKinnons and their raids and cattle thieving to deal with. But he continues to see Mairi, who runs the local inn, and can’t get their lovemaking out of his mind. One night, she gives in and takes him to her bed. But in the morning she regrets it.

As for Loch, he will have to face the consequences of his actions and the ache in his heart from the loss of Mairi. There are several graphic love scenes in this well-written story and a fair amount of angst. The characters who will be the leads in books 2 and 3 are introduced in this first tale, adding dimension to the trilogy. I liked the atmospheric background as Mull is a beautiful isle and Duart Castle, the home of the Macleans, a clan monument. The tension between the rival clans will keep you guessing as they are not resolved in this first story.

I'm not even sure where to begin. This book was so good. It held my attention and was never dull. It pulled me in and tugged at the heart. A lot of emotion throughout from several characters. It was difficult to put down. Love, heartbreak, and some passionate love making make the story flow at a fast pace.
Loch Maclean returned after ten years and becoming Laird was very onerous for him. He was ruling without heart, making himself and others miserable. Luckily he realized love and family make you stronger, not weaker.
Mairi had hardened her heart against Loch, but him returning gave her mixed emotions. My heart broke for her at times.
The characters are very well-written and I liked the main and side characters immediately. I am ready to read everyone's stories. This will be an amazing series. One I will definitely take the time to read in order once the whole series is finished.
This is one of those times I can't find the words I need to write a review that is up to the standard this book deserves. Jayne Castel is a very talented author and has quickly became a top favorite of mine. I look forward to more books from her.

Samhuinn, Fate, Clan, Family:
A love story that is deeply emotional and passionate throughout every gripping page.
A plot that is captivating and filled to the brim with clan feuds, forgiveness, undeniable attraction, and betrayal.
Loch comes home after 10 years at war only to discover that his father has passed, and he is now the chief of the clan.
Mairi the lass he left behind has some issues to deal with as far as Loch is concerned.
Both of these characters are very interesting as we learn about their thoughts and feelings from the past and into the present.
Loch is an arrogant self-centered man, and we follow him as he finally gets in touch with his hidden feeling about Mairi and life in general.
Mairi loves him but has been dealing with his abandonment for ten years now.
Their love is strained and sometimes hidden but their overwhelming desire and passion come to the forefront and their love finally brings them to a happy ending.
😥 Many heartfelt tender moments at the end brought me to use the tissue box.
💖Special Mention to Luag the loyal Irish hound.
💋 Perfect Cover for the story
👀I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest thoughts and opinion.

I have enjoyed a lot of Jayne Castel books but this missed the mark.

No really story other than Loch returning to find his father dead and his clan in a dispute with a neighbouring clan.
Loch is an awful character to read, he is self-centred, childish and simply unfit to rule. He left her behind int eh first place without a care throughout the 10years he was away, and he is dismissive and cruel to Mairi and the way he bargained is sister away like it didn’t matter is cruel.
It took til 70% of the way through for Mairi to finally speak her mind, which is just far too long.
There is no real connection between them either or at least from him there isn’t
And the penny only drops for him around the 80% when his sister is nearly dead for him to realise he made mistakes and needs to change.

I have read a lot of morally grey characters, but nearly all of them have a redeeming quality (usually how they treat family and the one they love) but Loch had nothing redeeming or nice about him.

I will read other books from this author as this is the only one I have come across I didn’t like, it I probably won’t read the rest of this series as again I didn’t like the sound of the supporting characters who feature in the next books

Mairi Macquarie gave her heart to Loch Maclean, the laird’s son, ten years ago. When the King called him to war, he left her and never looked back. He couldn’t even bother to write or contact his family or Mairi in all that time he was away. When he finally comes home, he has changed. He is bigger, stronger and more opinionated. He is no longer that young, brash lad who went to war. He also has to deal with some major changes in the clan.

Jayne Castel is a great writer. Through her descriptions she lets the reader feel, hear and smell medieval Scotland. The reader is also the fly on the wall as the characters hopefully change and grow. There were so many times I would have liked to have tapped Loch on the back of his head. But, the character has to grow and learn on his own and he does.

This is a story of second chances. Will the smoldering look Lock and Mairie gave to each other as Loch first came back into the area lead to something? Will Loch learn from his mistakes when dealing with Mairie, his sister and the other clans? There is a lot going on in this book and I have enjoyed the journey. I’m looking forward to the next book in the Rogues of Mull Series.

Loch has finally returned home now that he is no longer needed to fight for his king, and one of the first people he sees is the lass he ran from, Mairi.
Mairi was devastated when Loch left and has no plans to get involved with him again, but now he is her Laird she cannot totally avoid him.
As a youth, Loch was arrogant, selfish, and entitled: and on first interactions, Mairi does not think he has changed much, and judging on his attitude towards his sister, it appears she is right.
Mairi and Loch have an unresolved past that effects their future interactions. There is danger stalking the Macleans of Mull and this is not resolved in this episode. This is a book rich with Scottish pride and traditions, you can almost smell the honey cakes and mulled wine; Beltane and Yuletide are wonderful times in Scotland and this comes across with the wonderful descriptions.

This is the first book in a new series – Rogues of Mull.

Loch Maclean returned to the isle of Mull after ten years fighting with Robert the Bruce for the freedom of Scotland.
When he gets to the castle he finds out that his father has died and so he is the new laird.
Mairi Macquarie is the lass he left behind. She was devastated when he left.

“The attraction between Loch and Mairi burns hotter than a Beltane fire, yet they both are looking for different things. He wants her to warm his bed, but what she wants is love.
And neither is prepared to compromise.”

I really enjoyed this book. It held my attention for the whole book.
I liked the characters both the main and secondary ones.

Looking forward to the next book in the series.

3 1/2 stars. The book appears to be well researched in terms of details such as the fish that fishermen caught. The author's note also attests to her research. Ten years ago the H left his lover the h and went to war. At odds with his father, the H didn't visit or communicate with his father or the h. He returns to find his father has recently died and he is the new Laird. He reunites with the h but seems unaware of how heartbroken she was by his leaving and how casually he now treats her. The H really seems to be one dimensional. Why does he treat the women in his life with such disregard, his mother's memory, his sister and the h? No explanation is offered so it feels unsatisfying when he sees his treatment of them as hurtful and makes amends. Despite the marriage at the end the story feels unfinished and is to be continued.

- Historical romance
- Second chance

I always get excited when I see that this author is releasing a new book. She is a master at medieval Scottish tales and I know I will be in for a treat.

This book is the first in a new series, so world building/character introductions are necessary.

Loch has returned from a decade long campaign to find that he's lost his father and the girl he loved is still single, but wants nothing to do with him. He never communicated with his clan while he was gone. Now he is Laird and is trying to acclimate to all of the changes since he left.

But as with all of this author's work, even with the MMC being a bit difficult to like, we end up rooting for the couple.

I look forward to seeing what her next story brings!.

I thought this was a strong start to this series, though I thought we got maybe slightly too much set-up and not as much of the romance as I would have liked. I really loved the second chance romance trope in this story, and I thought that the happily ever after was definitely deserved, I just wonder if we got there a tad too quickly and the main issues were resolved too easily. That said, I loved Mairi and Loch and was so happy to see them get their happily ever after. I also loved the introduction of all of the other characters, including the heroes for the next few books. I'm so excited for the next story! Plus, as always, I couldn't put this book down and finished it in one sitting!.

Loch Maclean returns to the Isle of Mull, after ten years. He was fighting the English. Mari Macquarie was his lover in the past. He distracted by her. Mari wants to be loved, and cherished. Loch wants her to warm his bed. He is now the new Clan Chief. His father died before his return. He wants an alliance with the MacKinnys. He arranges for his sister Astrid to be marry their Clan Chief. I do not like the way he treated Mari, and his sister. Will Astrid marry the Clan Chief? Will Loch lose Mari again? I enjoyed reading this story. The storyline flowed well. You need to read this book!.

While off fighting for Robert the Bruce for 10 years and ignoring those he left behind, Loch Maclean comes home to discover nothing is the same. His father has died, his sister is grown, a rival clan is raiding their lands, and the girl he left behind wants nothing to do with him. Mairi Macquarie has no use for the arrogant, entitled Loch Maclean. He left, broke her heart, and hasn't communicated with anyone on the Isle of Mull in 10 years. She is grown, independent, strong-willed, and even more beautiful than he remembers. But she is no push-over. Well-paced storyline, and compelling characters, this book is full of sizzle, drama, action, steam, and more. A solid 5-star read for me.

Not her best story by far. Loch was a self-centered, egotisical male for most of the story. He treated Mairi like a mistress and expected her to fall into bed with him the minute they saw each other after 10 years apaort! What was worse, Mairi didn't stand up for herself. She tried to at first, then succumbed. I hated how he treated his sister! She had held the clan together since his father's death, and Loch found fault with how she acted, as it wasn't deemed "ladylike". That he almost gave her to a man who would most likely have killed her, was beyond frustrating! He finally really "gets it" after dire occurrences! I really hated Loch, and wish something would have happened to HIM, to cause him to wake up! Not sure if I will read more of this series.

A fully immersive read!

Jayne Castel writes another fantastic story set against the sometimes harsh lifestyle and backdrop of the ancient Scottish highlands. Cold climates. Lost loves. Family. Forgiveness.

I loved book 1 of Rogues of Mull. The showing and telling is so captivating you feel like your sitting at the table in great hall or in the solar or maybe at the local Inn beside the fire; having an ale or mutton stew served to you by Mairi.

The story of Loch & Mairi is a second chance romance with engaging fully realised intimate scenes that will leave you sighing…and wanting more….including a HEA for them.

And it’s onto Book 2 in the series for me! With book 3 soon to be on preorder.

You can’t help but feel for Mauri, who after spending time with Loch McClean is left crying while he turned his back and left to go fighting the English. Fast forward 10 years and he’s back, now laird, but only seems to need Mauri for “booty” calls. Mauri calls a halt to that and grieves what could have been. Meanwhile, Loch’s sister is also on the receiving end of his thoughtlessness and is wasting away to the point of death. Will Loch ever think outside the box of himself or what’s good for the clan? Will he ever put the women he loves first?
This story is wonderfully descriptive, but not to the point of making your eyes glaze. It is a standalone with an HEA.

I so love this authors books. I’ve been reading their books for years and I’ve never been disappointed. I know when I get one of their books Im going to be up late reading because I just can’t put it down. If you haven’t read any of their book I highly recommend you give them a try. I’d say make sure it’s the first book in the series so you start at the beginning. This one was just an amazing as the last book I read. The storyline was captivating and the characters were compelling and them drew me in and kept me read. I do can’t wait for the next book to come out.

Loch is a typical clan chief's son - arrogant and self centred charging through life without looking back at the devastation he leaves in his wake. Mairi gave her heart to Loch at 18 and has no chance of getting it back despite how he stopped on it. Loch is forced to make a series of major decisions and is then faced with the dire consequences he never considered. A beautiful story and it was great to watch Loch open his eyes, feel the pain of others and right the wrongs he created. Loved it.

What a great start to a series.
A story of homecoming, expectations, an alliance between feuding clans and a chance of a couple reuniting.
Feeling frustrated with the way Loch treated the two most important women in his life (his sister and the woman he left behind) I kept reading waiting for his ‘light bulb’ moment to happen and for him to come to his senses.
Will he realise in time or lose them both forever?
I thoroughly enjoyed Jayne’s story and really liked all of the characters, hoping that she will write a story for each of them in the upcoming series.

A new series with new characters from author Jayne Castel is always exciting and refreshing. I've never read a story from the Isle of Mull, but it sounds lovely the way it's described in the book. The book has all the elements most look for in a Historical Romance, strong alpha males, sassy and capable women, a loyal animal or two, drama, romance and a bit of humor. I enjoyed Loch and Mairi's tale, and am really looking forward to Jack and Tara's adventure!.

Awakening.

I enjoyed the first book of the series. Loch has been away fighting for 10 years leaving a broken hearted Mairi behind. He never sent word home to her or his father or sister during all that time. Loch is a hard man to like and I struggled with his character because he was so unlikeable. Mairi just wanted to be loved like she loved Loch all this time. When he returned, he was no different. Only caring for himself. That is until a letter from his father opens his eyes.
