They say the enemy of the enemy is your friend. But sometimes it's hard to know the true enemy--and harder still to know who your true friends are.
As a hunter, Constance Jaeger grew up believing that all vampires were evil. But now the Accords say they are citizens with rights. Constance is dubious. And her doubt grows when a vampire who scoffed at the Accords has murdered a neighborhood cop who looked out for the homeless, the sort of cop even the street kids trusted. She wants revenge.
Her strongest ally against the rogue bloodsucker is the charming, fiddle-playing Valentine McBain. He's seeking vengeance for a beloved servant and friend killed by the same vampire. The only problem? Valentine is a vampire too.
She doesn't want to trust him, but she may not have a choice. The deeper they dig into their mutual foe's machinations, the bigger the problems they uncover. Simple revenge rapidly turns into a tangled web of corruption, trafficking, and sorcery, until Constance and Valentine are the only ones who can stop the summoning of a demon powerful enough to destroy an entire city.
Assuming they can work together long enough to do it.
From earliest childhood, Shawna Reppert has had a passion for stories-- for reading them and for writing them. She obtained a BA in English with a Writing Option from Penn State University and has participated in numerous writing workshops and seminars given by the likes of Charles de Lint, David Farland and Elizabeth Lyon. Two of her stories have won honorable mentions from Writers of the Future. Previous short stories sold to 10 Flash Quarterly and to Everyday Fiction can be read for free at their websites. Several 'indie' short stories are available for sale at Amazon, and her story 'The Beast Within' will appear in the second Gears and Levers anthology, edited by Phyllis Irene Radford. Her first novel is due out as a Carina Press e-book in the summer of 2013.
In college, Shawna volunteered at a raptor rehabilitation center, which became valuable background for her short story The Sword and the Kestrel. Shawna has always had an affinity for wolves, and used to keep a wolf-dog hybrid as a pet. Her current four-footed children are a Lipizzan stallion and an orange-and-black cat named Samhain. She enjoys Irish social dancing and is an ardent supporter of live Irish music. Shawna also likes to play with the Society for Creative Anachronism and can sometimes be found in medieval garb on a caparisoned horse, throwing javelins into innocent hay bales that never did anything to her.
A Pennsylvania native, she currently lives in the beautiful wine county of Oregon.

Shawna Reppert's The Enemy of My Enemy is the first installment in the authors The Hunter's Chronicle. 29-year-old Constance Jaeger is a former gymnast and a Hunter. She's currently the only Hunter in the entire Portland metropolitan area. She comes from a long line of Hunters including her mother, brother and sister who were ambushed and murdered. Constance is also held back by the very Accords that has made her job that much harder. Accords which now state that vampires have rights, and unless you can actually prove they broken the law, they are untouchable.
A great series starter! Loved the characters, the worldbuilding, the building tension. It was a very fun read, and I look forward to seeing where Constance and Val go next
The only good vampire is a dead one. At least that's what Constance, the lone hunter in Portland, OR believes. In fact, before the Accords, she'd just kill them all and let the devil sort'em. But this is post Accords, and although her attitude hasn't changed, she has to be more careful.
Then things go south. And who saves her? A filthy (handsome, suave, funny) vampire.
This action packed UF is a juicy glimpse into a future slow burn, enemies to lovers romance. It has it all, the hot fiddle playing vampire, the grumpy hunter, and lots of mutual enemies to take care of.
There is a rich cast of characters, from the villains to the innocents being saved and a bunch in between. Constance has to learn and grow past her familial brainwashing to find the truth. People are people no matter their supernatural type.
Shawna Reppert has done it again. Her great prose and story telling ability suck you in from the start and then you've read the whole thing, wondering how you got to the end of the story so fast, and are left wanting more!
I highly recommend this new series! And I'm already desperate for the next one!
This was ok. Lots of angst and past hurts with plenty of "I'm not good enough" thrown in. At least the fmc, Constance, has been working as a Hunter for 5 years and has a decent confidence in her abilities. There are a few pseudo-political sections, maybe author personal feelings, throughout the storyline. Racial biases compared to vampire/werewolf treatment. Even slavery was mentioned in comparison to werewolf near genocide by the Hunters/Council. Constance finds everything that she has been taught and believed in about vampires especially to be under scrutiny and up for assessment. I did like Val as a character as well as others in his group.
Editing is needed - There were words used frequently but spelled two different ways (shanachie vs seanachie), missing words in a sentence ("and the one to look ."), and lots of repetition with sections reworded but repeated two or three times. Also some explanations were frequently repeated as if the reader was unable to remember anything. It did mean there were sections that I was skimming. I will try book 2 at some point, but no rush.
A great read by a new to me author! This book is about Constance, a former gymnast and reluctant Hunter. She never meant to be a Hunter, but the deaths of her older twins siblings gave her no choice. She is just making the best of it until they find someone else. But when a police officer is murdered, she is forced to ally herself with Valentine McBain, vampire and Irish fiddler. Constance starts off a perfect hunter, believing all vampires are evil and should be dispatched. But after forming her uneasy alliance with the handsome and charming Valentine, she begins to rethink all she’s been taught. This is a great forced proximity story with the possibility of enemies to lovers down the line. (Fingers crossed!) There is plenty of action, suspense and surprises!! All the characters are wonderful! They all do their part to slowly chip away at Constance’s lifetime of “truths”. And the ending! I did not see that coming and was almost biting my nails waiting to see how it turned out for the good guys! I look forward to seeing where things go from here!
I loved it! I loved the way the author forced the FMC to re-evaluate everything she thought you knew about vampires (cold, heartless monsters with no soul), only to find out she knew nothing. And the MMC had to set aside all of his well-earned distrust so they could find the true enemy. It was so believable! This was a perfect Enemies to Lovers trope.
Character development great as always. I would recommend this book to anyone who has read previous books from the author, and anyone that loves a good read with paranormal aspects and characters who dwell in shades of grey rather than black or white.
What a fun read! Although I sometimes wanted to yell at the FMC a tiny bit for being narrow minded, she finally figured things out on her own. Looking forward to the next installment. What is going to happen with Val? Dare I say some romance?
Good characterizations in book 1 of a paranormal series. Storyline is intriguing and raises many questions concerning good and evil and how and who you apply which anyone is. Can't wait for the next book.
Super slow got to 50% and quit…kept waiting for something to happen. For reference I can finish a 200 pg book in a few hours…I kept putting this book down to go clean my house…so house cleaning was more exciting.
