Is the coming of the Lord near? Must God's people go through the Tribulation? These are questions raised in 1 and 2 Thessalonians, but the author focuses on the real message of these epistles: our need to Be Ready with prepared lives and churches.
Warren W. Wiersbe, former pastor of the Moody Church and general director of Back to the Bible, has traveled widely as a Bible teacher and conference speaker. Because of his encouragement to those in ministry, Dr. Wiersbe is often referred to as 'the pastor's pastor.' He has ministered in churches and conferences throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Central and South America, and Europe. Dr. Wiersbe has written over 150 books, including the popular BE series of commentaries on every book of the Bible, which has sold more than four million copies. At the 2002 Christian Booksellers Convention, he was awarded the Gold Medallion Lifetime Achievement Award by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. Dr. Wiersbe and his wife, Betty, live in Lincoln, Nebraska.
This book covered Paul's teachings to the early church. I do not know if I totally agree with Wiersbe's explanation of the events of the second coming but he does make a good case for his point of view.
The author offers an outstanding study of the Bible’s 1 & 2 Thessalonians. His insights and research on the contexts of Paul’s letters offer a good understanding of these letters.
I usually enjoy Wiersbe’s “Be” books. I know that they are not meant to be deep, analytical, academic type commentaries, but this one was very shallow and generic.
I found some useful points in the chapters on 1 Thessalonians, but I feel that 2 Thessalonians was VERY glossed over. I read those chapters in one sitting and didn’t feel like there was much valuable commentary.
Wiersbe provides a brief overview of his eschatological views as well. While I don’t agree, I respect his reasoning. I just wish this book had less personal anecdotes and cutesy illustrations and rather stuck to exegeting scripture (especially in the second half). This book is more appropriate for new believers or someone studying the Bible for the first time.
Warren Wiersbe really does have a way of just bringing God’s Word to people in a comprehensive and also challenging way. It’s like getting spiritual glasses and see God is new ways! But Mr Wiersbe also shows us, those tools in the Word that removes another layer of the old man, that casts off shackles we didn’t know we have.
I feel like is have taken several more intimate steps towards Father’s Heart, and I am so grateful the He is so patient with us. But my heart also breaks, as I see the warnings of Jesus happening before my eyes. Today is the day for salvation!
Another excellent book in the BE series. This book deals with Paul's letters to the church at Thessalonica where someone is teaching that Christ's return is imminent. Things are so bad that people are quitting their jobs to wait for Christ's return. Paul's letters present the truth about the return of Christ and tells the Thessalonians how they should therefore behave. And the truths he gives apply just as much to us today as it did to this first century church. Reading it gave me new insights into my own beliefs as well as the false beliefs of many around me. Time well spent, and my wife and I will continue our study in I Timothy.
Admittedly, I just read the study guide of the Commentary, so I did not rate the book itself.
The study guide provides helpful questions that would allow both new and long-time believers to thoroughly examine the meaning of 1 & 2 Thess. Wiersbe is consistently helpful in his resourcing believers, and this is no exception.
What a great exposition of Paul’s writing to the Thessalonians. I had no real problem understanding of the teaching here relating to Revelation. Powerful stuff for the letters' recipients, and for me.
The study of prophecy is not for us to make calendar, for no one knows the time, but for us to be ready. The explanation of this commentary was simple, yet could broaden our view.
There are some things that I disagree with but other than that it was a good book. Well written and went through a lot of Paul’s teachings. Great Book.
