I have painfully mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed everything about Vivienne and Selene very much. Two strong personalities make the submission a lot of fun to read. All the scenes with Vivienne and Selene on page together are scorching hot. The battle of wills is delicious. The falling in love is a bit quick, it feels as if the author could have stretched the exploration of lust as a basis a little more, but Vivienne is a complicated soul and I won’t pretend to understand her.

Everything else, however, feels in the way. Except for the niece (the trans friend arc is sweet), the other characters barely exist and editing/proofreading approximations make the story hard to follow. That said, I read a review copy, so these might have been fixed in the final version.

It’s frustrating because there is so much potential. I really hope the author keeps writing and publishing and I look forward to this potential being fulfilled.

I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

I love it when new voices are added to the mix in sapphic fiction and Thea Belmont is a welcome one.

This book was smokin' hot. Icy Professor Vivienne Carter has neglected her own needs for years since taking over the care of her niece. While she has no time for relationships, she decides to let off some steam and hire a dominatrix after she unexpectedly happens upon her business card. Vivienne has certain desires and kinks that a dominatrix can fulfill nicely. But she discovers that Selene, the delicious dom she hired and starts to develop feelings for, is also the new principal at her niece's high school. While she wasn't looking for a relationship, this revelation certainly complicates matters.

It was an interesting dynamic that the ice queen in this story was the professor, more than the dom. When they had a scene, Selene took over, but otherwise Vivienne is prickly with pretty much everyone in her life. And she is with Selene at times as well, outside of their play. She is convinced she needs no one - that she's self-sufficient and has her family to care for, but she definitely responds physically when someone else takes the reins. Certainly in the bedroom.

This is one of those insta-lust stories and the mains had little interaction outside the bedroom so the falling in love aspect was… suspect. That said - women tend to develop emotional bonds at a quicker pace and Selene definitely “saw” Vivienne, which is appealing to anyone. And being in that kind of dom/sub relationship does require a whole lot of trust. Still, I would have liked to see their relationship fleshed out more.

There were family dynamics explored as well and social issues taking place at the school that were a good complement to the overall story. I would have liked to have learned more about Vivienne's complex relationship with her niece and sister, though.

For those not really into BDSM, this was relatively tame although the pain aspect always makes me squirm. But some of their encounters were ridiculously hot and I'd definitely be interested in an audiobook version with the right narrator. Bottom line - this is an erotic romance with focus on the erotic. So if you're looking for a sweeping romance, this isn't it. However, it definitely scratches a certain...itch.

Principle decisions by Thea Belmont is a BDSM, erotic romance that will tie you up and hold you there until it’s finished- pun intended.

What happens when a professor enters into a no strings attached agreement with a high school principal?
Icy, standoffish Vivienne Carter wants is to relieve her sexual tension. She doesn’t have time for relationships or feelings. She is too busy looking after her niece and making sure the family is provided for.
So when she finds a card with a phone number and two words written on it ‘Selene Dominatrix’ she decides to call. However Vivienne gets a lot more than she bargained for, because Selene knows exactly what she wants before she wants it. Surely she can’t possibly be falling for the beautiful dominating woman? That’s not the plan. Feelings will complicate things. But maybe complications are exactly what is needed to open the door to something wonderful.

I started reading this in the afternoon and couldn’t put it down! I devoured it , or maybe it devoured me? At this point I’m not sure. But my god, what a way to pass the time.

This book is exactly what the blurb says it is. It’s packed full of erotic BDSM scenes that will make your toes curl and your temperature rise. It’s also full of so many feelings.
The book is told from Vivienne’s point of view and I couldn’t help but love her. She’s icy so of course she captured my heart. This woman is fierce, icy, and aloof, but, she’s also broken and lonely and in need of someone to take care of her.
And my oh my does Selene take care of her. In every sense of the word the way Selene care for Vivienne is beautiful and caring and as I’m typing this I think how crazy does this sound because the woman’s favourite toy is a whip or cane or riding crop! Yet everything she does, she does to please Vivienne. It’s stunning to witness how quickly she breaks down her defensives.
Now don’t forget Vivienne is icy so even though Selene breaks through, it takes her a while to keep those walls down.
The romance that builds between them is gorgeous. From the start I could feel it was more than just and arrangement. There are moments that I had tears in my eyes and one scene that broke my heart and I cried (damn ice queens get me every time!).
There are sweet moments to warm your heart in between the hot moments that warm other places. It’s really is a wild ride.

The communication and negotiations Vivienne and Selene have to navigate to make this work are not easy. They don’t always get it right, in fact they sometimes they get it very wrong, but they learn and in the end they build something beautiful together.

I love it! It’s not a long novel but it’s the perfect length for this type of story.

The writing is brilliant, the plot flows and grows, and I will be rereading this one many times. You can tell this author has knowledge of a BDSM relationship, it jumps off the pages. Principle Decisions is a stunning debut! If this is Thea Belmont’s first book I can not wait to read what she writes next.
Without a doubt this book gets five stars from me. It’s fantastic.

It seems I can’t write a review without this app crashing but I need to warn folks that want a second opinion (especially since I fell for it after all the high scores).

The writing is bad. No character is well rounded or likable, including the narrator MC. There’s a moment in which she says “what did it matter… (what) a sister who earned minimum wage thought?” Or when she sees this guy who she used to date and goes “He looked far better than he had right to after his wife died” (yup, that’s it word by word - mistake and all)

***spoilers below***

I would get whiplash constantly. Characters would change behavior in the span of a paragraph or when, at the 85% mark when the out of the blue breakup needs to happen, it’s so surreal I abandoned it completely. No smut is worth this much inconsistency: The MCs are finally in a relationship, the minimum wage sister gets her revenge by telling the niece about them without any heads up (told ya no character is likable), the 16-yo niece throws a fit saying the aunt promised she would only date someone she approved, aunt acquiesces because why not, and I just couldn’t continue… ugh, I wish I could ask for my money back.

But in case you’re wondering if this is for you, here’s a different POV from all the 4-5 stars reviews that paint how wonderful this novel is. I won’t be reading anything by this author again, 💯 not for me.

This book has beyond my expectations, and I really love it! Before you turn down the book, because yes, it contains BDSM, but there’s so much more! And this is one of those books that makes you understand more the emotional side of BDSM even if you’re not into it.

I wish we could explore more about Selene. She’s such a mysterious and incredibly sexy figure from the beginning to the end.

I couldn’t put the book down once I started; the pacing was good, and I love Thea Belmont's writing style! Overall, I enjoy it a lot and I’m looking forward to her future book.

Just 3 stars. I liked the blurb of this book but found the book itself disappointing. I didn’t like Vivienne, one of the main characters, mainly because of the way she treated her sister and other people. Add to this that there was not a lot of a story in this book. Everything seemed to revolve about the sex scenes and then the sex changed into love without letting the reader see or feel how that happened.

If you’re in the mood for an erotic (bdsm included) romance, look no further. Not only were there incredibly written sexy scenes, but there was an actual plot that went along with it which made their love story that much better. This book completely exceeded my expectations

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Ice queen on ice queen and an absolutely delicious debut. Admittedly, there were some detracting aspects, but regardless, I am completely in love with this book. I need more!

And oh, I'm beyond grateful to have discovered another audiobook narrator I absolutely love! Avery Reid has definitely earned a spot alongside Lori Prince and Abby Craden as one of my favourites after listening to this.

A new author and debut book so I was quite keen to read Principle Decisions with leads Vivienne and Selene.
Unfortunately, the storyline was somewhat choppy. The school principle/domme aspect just didn't fly for me as well as the ice queen role reversal. Torrid yes but quick declaration of love not so believable. Of the supporting characters Hattie stood out and I couldn't understand the need for Vivienne to be so mean to her sister. That seemed over the top and was in fact bullying - one of the threads in the book.
Overall disappointment in a plot that tried too hard. However, I give a rating of 3 to encourage the author.

3.25 stars? Perhaps more of a 3? Then again, I could stretch it to 3.5? My feelings about this book are pretty mixed, but at one point my feelings were leaning towards negative, so I guess mixed is an okay place to end on. This is an erotic contemporary romance that excels (mostly) at the erotica, but kinda flops on the romance. Icy, uptight university professor Vivienne engages the services of a dominatrix on a whim, and soon comes to find out that Selene, who makes her feel more than anyone else has in a long time, is the new principal at her niece's school. This isn't really a problem for them (until it very suddenly is). What follows is a lot of smut (that's not actually every explicit, but still sexy) and kink exploration, and a very middling (imo) romance.

And perhaps I'm being unfair, idk. It's clearly labelled as an erotic romance, so you know what to expect when going in, and you know what the spotlight will probably be on. I can't complain that most of the emphasis was on the sex and their physical connection. But I truly felt nothing emotional between these women. I believed every bit of their physical chemistry, but for more than half the book, I felt like they didn't even know anything about each other, because they never, ever talked. (Outside of their kink negotiation, which was great.) The entire book is told from Vivienne's POV. I'm the type of reader that loves single POV romance, but Selene remained a mystery to the reader in ways that did not help, and only hindered enjoyment. I dearly wish we could have seen them having more conversations, or going on clandestine dates, or having long phone calls or text messages. SOMETHING. Around 60%, the L word gets used, and I was genuinely incredulous, because it did not feel like these characters even knew each other.

The writing also wasn't my favourite. Slightly formulaic, and not enough description. I didn't mind that the sex scenes weren't super explicit, because they didn't need to be. But there were lots of moments that deserved to be lingered on, or described more fully, and I felt like we kept rushing past those. None of the side characters are particularly well drawn, and they all felt like props. The third act conflict was ludicrous, and again, I had to laugh. It felt sooooo silly and forced. Perhaps if the author had convinced me that there was an emotional connection, it might have worked better? Or I would have at least been able to look past how silly it felt? But nope. There are several character moments that felt really mean and over the top, and I kept waiting for Vivienne to admit that she'd been overly harsh about certain things (Hattie's job, Claudia not wanting to study languages) but those things, and her attitude about them, just never came up again. Also, this is minor, but the book had quite a few typos and punctuation errors, more than I would expect from an Ylva book.

But despite all of that, I can't rate the book too lowly, because I did enjoy it as an erotic romance. There were so many moments that captured the perfect mixture of sweet and intense, and it really worked for me. I love the combination of a submissive ice queen and a charming, more upbeat domme, so that was also pretty fun. There's a lot of potential here, but to work as a cohesive story, it definitely needed to be longer and more character focused. Not bad for a debut. I'd be happy to give the author another try.

(Great cover, though!)

Principle Decisions centres on Vivienne Carter, an icy professor who, while overwhelmed with caring for her niece, stumbles into the world of BDSM to address her neglected desires. She hires Selene, a dominatrix, only to discover Selene is also the new principal at her niece's school, complicating their no-strings-attached arrangement.

Belmont interestingly flips the usual dynamic, making Vivienne, not Selene, the ice queen of the story. Vivienne's prickly demeanour outside the bedroom contrasts with her submissive nature during their BDSM scenes. The physical aspect of their relationship is intense and well-described, hitting the mark for those seeking erotic content. This is where Principle Decisions truly shines.

However, the story has little development of Vivienne and Selene's emotional connection. The relationship is largely confined to their physical encounters, so unfortunately their falling in love comes across as somewhat forced. A deeper exploration of their personal lives and their non-physical relationship would have provided further depth to the narrative.

While the BDSM elements are not overly intense, they might not appeal to everyone, though certain scenes are undeniably steamy. This novel leans heavily towards the erotic side of romance as it offers sizzling scenes for those looking for an erotic fix, but with a HEA ending.

Thea Belmont's entry into sapphic fiction with Principle Decisions brings a fresh voice to the genre. I'm excited to read whats next from her in the future.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Ylva Publishing for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my, but this was a delight! Principle Decisions delivered on everything that I expected, but it also delivered some surprises as well. There were aspects of both Vivienne and the story that I wasn’t expecting, that spoke to me deeply, and I know that connection certainly flavored my reading of this.

The cover blurb describes Vivienne as icy, aloof, and sexually frustrated, but it’s so much deeper than that. Here we have a woman who has sacrificed for her family, given of her free time and relationship dreams, to care for her orphaned niece. Vivienne comes across as icy and aloof because she holds so much in, because she is so reluctant (and afraid) to allow any sort of human connection. She’s so committed to the roles of professor and caregiver that she hasn’t the time or space for a lover, or even friend. At first, I thought I disliked her because of how frustrated I was with her, but then I realized that what really bothered me was that she forced me to really consider how my family has felt about me – I saw aspects that I disliked about myself in her.

Like Vivienne, I find the role of submission, the act of being controlled, dominated, punished–and then cared for–to be extraordinarily soothing. We both come away from it with the same sense of a relief so deep, so permeating, that it’s hard to explain to others. It’s cathartic, and it’s also sometimes hard to remember professional boundaries.

And that brings us to Selene. She is, in a word, marvelous. All too often it’s the domme who is written as cold or stern, sacrificing a personality for a presence, but she comes across like someone you could happily sit and have coffee with and never suspect her other activities. She’s what I would call playfully stern, someone to be respected and admired, but also someone who doesn’t need to feel feared or to make a submissive feel humiliated in order to work her magic. The sparks are there from the start, and my heart was fully invested in seeing them achieve a happily-ever-after.

There is also a well-written subplot to this about Vivienne’s niece and her best friend, a transgender boy who is being bullied at school. It explores the overall novel’s message of tolerance, love, and taking responsibility in a sort of microcosm. That being said, I do feel like Vivienne’s family was the weakest link in the story, especially her sister, Hattie, who feels so timid and meek that I, once again, had to confront the sort of exhausting level emotional trauma we can sometimes inflict on our families. My spouse has told me that, since I’ve begun getting help for my anxiety, she not only loves me more but likes me again–and it’s hard to realize you were unlikable.

I’ve rambled on enough, and likely injected more personality into this review than most would care for, but Principle Decisions was a fabulous read. The BDSM scenes are delightful, the romance is scrumptious, and the drama that threatens to keep the lovers apart is genuine. Please, do pick that red business card from the book and give Selene a chance.

Finished it pretty quickly! Definitely a very enjoyable book for me. It was a very spicy read with depth to the characters I liked. I will say certain coincidences were repeated throughout the book a little too much for my liking which brought it down a star, but I loved Selene and how she could put Vivienne in her place. I also like the author's writing style. I'd recommend for a fun and spicy yet romantic read.

3.8 stars for me.

I think this is the third BDSM book I've read in my life, and while I found it interesting to read and learn more about the genre, I don't think it is my usual cup of tea.

I need build up of emotions, longing and pining, which of course are not the main purpose here.

I wanted to know all the reasons why behind certain feelings, but they were rapidly brushed away.

It has been although quite eye opening to read and insightful, and I can understand why the readers who love the genre are giving full appraise to the book.

Just, I prefer reading about the pain of the heart than literal corporal pain.

But I am happy that Vivienne has finally found someone like Selene who is capable of loving her the way she wants to be loved.

To each their own.

Some scenes are indeed as hot as pure fire.

I was very excited for a wlw bdsm book but this fell flat for me. If I hadn’t been given an arc for the book, I would have DNF’d.

There were spelling errors, plot holes, the MC is unlikeable (and not in a dynamic way, in a hates her family and blames them for her own choices way), and the book could have been 200 pages shorter.

The smut is good, but not good enough to make me want to keep reading.

Soooooo Good!

Vivienne finds a business card for Selene, a dominatrix, tucked within a book and can’t fight the desire to explore what might be on offer. When Vivienne is called to her niece’s high school, Selene is the last person she expected to be in the principal’s office.

This was fabulously erotic, fun, and moving all at the same time. I enjoyed every second of the story, from the initial meeting between Vivienne and Selene to finding out how their paths were almost destined to cross in other places. Their reactions to everything were always a little unexpected and surprising. Each of them were strong and slightly elusive but Selene actually really surprised me when we got to know her better outside of her other profession.

Vivienne was trying so hard to keep her cool and not get swept or carried away in fantasies but she loved to daydream and share thoughts that gave us very intimate insight into how she was feeling, what all these experiences were like, and that she too had a hidden side that wasn’t anything like what everyone got on the surface. She was a family orientated person, loyal and caring, but also sometimes lacking some awareness that landed her in situations that weren’t as easy for her to control. At times she had her hands full with her niece’s and Selene’s antics, and it was great being along with her for the ride.

Just a lot of fun, very sexy, laced with a deeper emotional connection that brought a whole new level to this type of story, injected some humour, and made it unforgettable.

1 ★ Hate this with a passion. Vivienne in particular is public enemy number 1 with her extremely bigoted and unlikeable attitude. And for that reason alone I couldn’t continue reading. Fym you were forced to learn a language when you were little so your force your kid to aswell? Talk about generational trauma. Wtf???

3.5. When it comes to romance, BDSM is never on my radar. This is a short read with not much development other than the story between the main characters. I enjoyed it and don’t think the BDSM was as heavy as in some other novels I have read. It's a quick, no-strings-attached story that I devoured. Damn!!! This is HOT! Vivienne Carter is as uptight at home as she is as a professor of languages. When one day at the book store her sister Hattie works at, she picks up the newest best seller and finds a business card for Selene, a dominixtrix. Being that she's emotionally woven tight, she makes the call and sets up an appointment.
Then the fun begins. It's an awakening for both women. So worth the read! 5 stars !!

It all started with a black embossed business card that was tucked inside of a book that Vivienne bought: “Selene Dominatrix.”
Vivienne’s whole life changed when she called the number on the card and then quickly found herself already being dominated in a game Selene was playing, manipulating her and simply forcing Vivian to name the service that she was inquiring about! That’s when I was hooked.

I’m really not a fan of BDSM, but this one was something else! The erotic romance was beautiful and completely lured me in. I became mesmerized. The chemistry, the barriers, the longing and anxieties and inability to deny oneself of pleasure. Vivienne was in a sex bubble. This was just so well done that even I was seduced.

Vivienne was a college professor and had been raising her brother’s 16 year old daughter, Claudia, after the parents died in an accident. When Claudia got into some trouble at her high school, Vivienne was called in to meet with the school’s principal, who just happened to be Selene. I don’t need to say more about this because you can surely figure how this could play into the situation.

I loved this book because of the romance and the chemistry between the two characters and how smoothly the story flowed. I loved the journey of watching them fall in love and wanted so much for them to find happiness….and was not denied the HEA! (Not a spoiler because you still need to experience this journey.)

My thanks to NetGalley and Ylva Publishing for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

i'll start off by saying this handled kink and communication very well! this was probably the strongest part of the book honestly for me.

i had to force myself to finish this book, and it sort of put me in a bit of a slump (it took me almost a month!!).

let's look at the reasons why;

1. aside from the kink aspect, viv and selene felt so incredibly flat and boring. i didn't care for either of them at all, which meant i couldn't connect to them on any level. i also didn't feel all that attached to any of the side characters either.
2. it was entirely 'she did this. then she did this. she felt this. then this happened.' and i struggle with this writing style. it doesn't keep me immersed at all and i prefer to be shown things as well as being told info. this was all tell no show.
3. the conflict, or 3rd act was ludicrous and i almost laughed at the ridiculousness of it.
4. giving me insta love vibes. i couldn't feel all that much chemistry between the two ladies which meant their whole relationship was as stale as month old bread.

some of the sex scenes were hot tho and again, the communication and how kink was handled were rreally good. it's a shame i didn't really like anything else.

thanks to netgalley & publishers for an arc in return of an honest review.

It was an fucking amazing surprise.

It's the only book by the author and jesus christ, it's good. REALLY good.

I enjoy the relationship between them so much, the loyalty Vivienne has to her niece is amazing and, at the end, it broke my heart a little bit because THINGS TM.

Selene is so... I don't know where to start, so kind, warm, understanding and aaaaaaa, these two had me kicking from chapter 1.

I really love it and I want to read something more from the author so I hope we have a new book son.

For all my kinkster buddies- you found your holy grail. Safe. Sane. Consensual. Negotiated scenes. Safe words. Boundaries. Guided exploration. Trust building. You'll find impact play, service, wee bit of exhibitionism, giving and receiving rope, switch deliciousness, and some lovely aftercare. It is a beautiful power exchange that will make you smile at your collar, or wish for one of your own. I haven't read a D/s relationship this well fleshed out in years and 2024 has started off with a high bar and a bang!
