A dramatic, life-size photographic field guide to the wonders of the forest and the miniature wildlife that thrives there.
Explore the exciting world of the forest, where more than 125 different bugs, worms, and small critters play out the drama of life in miniature. Seven different life-size forest habitats, exploring the leaf-litter to the tree-top canopy through all four seasons, are vividly depicted in enticingly lush photographic scenes. Each scene is followed by "field notes" which identify all animals, relate intriguing facts about survival in each habitat, and share the excitement of discovery. Includes forest exploration hints, essential safety information, and a "picture index" for easy reference.
This book is perfect for the child intrigued by nature. The book is sorted by animals in different seasons that explorers would see. It has tips from the author of how to keep a record of different animals as a nature explorer. It also has a cool picture glossary at the back for kids to look up different animals they are interested in.
This book holds tremendous details within its large-scale two-page spread photos and simple descriptions of the many animals within those. One big area lacking is that there are no names or descriptions of the plants in all the photos. Though animals are to be the focus of the book, the photos are so good and detailed that it leaves the viewer to wonder what some plant names are, too.
I like Bishop's other books better for reading aloud, but this is a great reference book for kids to come back to again and again. There is much to pore over in the illustrations; a first glance won't do it. The illustrations look staged, and they are in a sense: lots of smaller photographs are used to compose one larger image. A lot of work went into this behind the scenes, and it's done well for what it is. A good index helps kids learn to use a reference book as well. A great tool to discuss the myriad habitats and seasons in a forest.
This is a non-fiction book about the different animals one would find in their local forest. Their are wonderful photos of small wild animals one could expect to find in any local forest areas. This author is one of my son's favorite as he does a fantastic job of giving information about animals around us, and taking fantastic photos of these animals. This book is good for pre-k to 5th graders who love animals and the outdoors.
I am a big fan of Nic Bishop books. The photographs in this book are vibrant and almost jump off the page. I would recommend this book for any elementary child that loves to investigate nature.
