Coronation Close #3

Dark Shadows over Coronation Close

Rate this book
There’s talk of war and dark clouds fester on the horizon...

Bristol 1938
A shadowy presence overshadows Coronation Close, watching and waiting. Jenny Crawford is the first to notice the stranger and wonders why his attention is fixed on Thelma Dawson’s house. When challenged he makes a hasty retreat.

Meanwhile Thelma is having trouble with her precocious daughter Mary who is about to leave school and start work. Mary considers herself an adult but to Thelma she’s still a little girl; an attitude resented by her daughter.

Unknown to her mother, Mary is secretly befriended by a stranger, an older man who treats her as the grown up she thinks she is. But what does this man want with this naïve young girl?

Problems shared are problems halved. Jenny and Thelma certainly share theirs as the shadow of war rolls over from Europe and nothing seems certain.

It's like settling in with an old friend reading this book, the third installment of The Coronation Close series. We're back with Jenny, Thelma and all the neighbours for the ups and downs that constitute life in the 1930s in England.
At the end of the first chapter Jenny has a huge bombshell dropped on her and doesn't know what life is going to be like in the future. There's a stranger hanging around the Close and Thelma's life is in turmoil when all is revealed. Thelma's girls are growing up and Mary is proving to be a right handful.
Jenny has to give up her job in Robin's shop when his wife, Doris, sweeps back into his life again and causes trouble as usual.
There's drama in the Close when the family at number 5 do a runner and leave a big 'surprise' behind. The new family that move in are not going to be popular I think, even though they're a lot better than the one that left.
I absolutely love this series!!! Thelma is still my favourite, she's a strong, resilient character and
totally likable. She's also a very good friend to Jenny.
I wish the next in the series was already out because I would dive right in. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good saga about ordinary everyday people.

A big thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an early copy of this book to read.

Review:
Thank you to Rachel's Random Resources for hosting this Book Tour this past week and for the FREE Ebook to Promote and Review for Lizzie.

This was my first time reading a Historical Fiction Novel by Lizzie Lane so i wasnt sure what to expect but i have to say i really enjoyed the History and Research she put into this book to make it such an accurate read.

The Characters were so fun and enjoyable to read about. Jenny, Thelma and Mary were definately my favorites since i loved learning about their backgrounds in 1938 Bristol.

The Setting was beautifully described which made me feel like i was actually in 1938 Bristol during the World War.

Overall a Phenomenally Informative Historical Fiction Novel. Can't wait to read more by Lizzie in the future!!

It's 1938 in Bristol and the threat of war continues to hang over Britain. But for those in Coronation Close, life goes on as ever.

Jenny Crawford is busy raising her two girls Tilly and Gloria at No.2 but a postcard with some unexpected news threatens to topple her world has she has come to know it. Two years ago, when they first moved into Coronation Close Jenny's husband Roy was a nasty piece who when he wasn't home ran with Oswald Mosley's blackshirts and when he was home used his fists to drive home his authority. But then Roy discovered another way of life and signed up for the army, sending his pay back to support Jenny and the girls. This arrangement suited them both perfectly. But news of Roy's sudden illness means he has been medically discharged and was coming home. What does this mean for Jenny now?

And then there is Jenny's work in Robin Hubert's pawn and secondhand store. Robin and Jenny go way back and had once held a torch for each other but fate stepped in and they married other people - she to Roy and Robin to Doris. Roy would never allow Jenny to work and nor would he allow her friendship with Robin to continue, though it was clear the pair still carried that flaming torch. Robin has made no secret of his feelings though his own troubles with Doris make life difficult for all involved, as Doris has a taste for fancy men, rich men, and the lifestyle to go with it. She continues to use the children as pawns in her games to win against Robin, holding the threat of losing them over him to force his hand into doing what she wants. Not including Doris in the scheme of things, what did Roy's return mean for Robin and Jenny's friendship?

Thelma Dawson is also raising her daughters Mary and Alice alone with her adult son George now married and expecting a baby of their own. Her life continues on its even keel whilst seeing Bert Throgmorton on occasion, and she's happy. But when Jenny spotted a stranger staring at Thelma's house one day and later mentioned it to her, Thelma began to fear who it would be. There were only two possibilities...and she didn't favour either one of them.

Then her eldest daughter Mary begins acting out. She's 13 going on 30 and believes she knows all and is old enough to do what she wants, her mother couldn't stop her. She had been seeing a boy from a local band of gypsies but when they moved on her attentions moved elsewhere in the form of a stranger who began to show an interest in young Mary. Then one night, Mary hasn't come home and Thelma is frantic with worry as to what might have happened. The last anyone saw of her was when Alice saw Mary walking out of the Close and when she called her, she ran off.

Did Mary leave of her own accord? Or was she taken?

Another emotional yet easy read in the lives of those in Coronation Close. We see the flight of one lot of neighbours who then make way for a new set of neighbours...neither of whom are popular with the rest of the Close. All the while, the threat of war continues to loom over them.

I must admit, I'm a bit like Jenny. I don't want to hear anything or know anything about the possibility of war. I could see myself every time Jenny's internal monologue screamed "NO!" and she switched off the radio to silence any further talk of War.

I am really enjoying this series. I enjoyed the Tobacco Girls but I think I am enjoying this one even more and I can't wait to see what's in store for the residents of Coronation Close next.

A delightfully easy read that is compelling, enjoyable and entertaining.

I would like to thank #LizzieLane, #Netgalley and #BoldwoodBooks for an ARC of #DarkShadowsOverCoronationClose in exchange for an honest review.

I was delighted to get an arc of this wonderful book, having read the previous two novels I was hooked. Reading about the residents of Coronation Close is like catching up with old friends.
It’s 1938 in Bristol and it’s looking like there might be another war on the horizon, but, for Jenny Crawford and her friend Thelma it’s the problems that are closer to home that are more worrying.
Dark Shadows brings us into the heart of Britain at a time when for an awful lot of people money was tight and people really had to make do and mend. The cast of characters in this book is wonderful. It is evocative of a time long gone but wonderfully transcribed here. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. I would give this book 5⭐️ and would encourage anyone who has an interest in historical fiction to read this, indeed you don’t need to be a big historical fan to enjoy this just a lover of a good story.
Many thanks to #BoldwoodBooks and #NetGalley for this book.

Dark Shadows over Coronation Close is the third book in this wonderful historical saga series written by one of my favourite authors of this genre, Lizzie Lane.

Once I had finished the first chapter I just felt like I was back amongst friends as it is just so easy to settle back into the lives of the neighbours of Coronation Close.

There are definitely dark shadows looming in both personal lives of the residents and also the threat of war is very serious and is causing a lot of worry for everyone.

One of the many reasons I love this series is the way the author develops the characters, they are strong and feisty women who work hard and will do everything for their families. From start to finish this is a wonderful read which is at times filled with drama and also with love and courage.

1938 Bristol, everyone has a past but do they have a future.
With the mention of war looming again, Jenny Crawford just didn't want to know, Coronation Close will always be home, she was happy working part time in the pawn and second hand shop and looking after her two girls, then a postcard changes everything those dreaded words, Jenny I am coming home Roy she had to tell Thelma she knew she could count on her, but a stranger is seen watching Thelma's house, who is it and what does he want.
Dark Shadows is such a enjoyable read I am loving all these books in this series, they certainly keep you entertained with plenty of day to day goings on from the characters, you feel like you are part of it all.
superb story delivered once again from the author.

Hey fellow bookworms! 📚✨ Just had to spill the tea about "Dark Shadows over Coronation Close" by Lizzie Lane! 🌟 This gem took me on a rollercoaster ride back to the pre-war years in Bristol, and boy, was it a trip! As a 38-year-old history buff from Israel, diving into this historical fiction masterpiece was like time-traveling with a front-row seat.

So, picture this: Jenny, Thelma, and the gang from Coronation Close are like your BFFs, but in the 1930s. I mean, who knew the past could be this relatable? 😂 These characters are so real; I found myself shouting, "No, don't do it!" at my Kindle. Yes, I know they can't hear me, but a book can dream, right?

Even though I only gave it a cheeky skim, I got hooked faster than you can say "teatime." Lizzie Lane's got that magic touch, weaving serious topics into the storyline with a finesse that's downright genius. And can we talk about the mysterious man lurking around Thelma's house? 👀 Talk about adding some spicy suspense to the mix!

Now, let's spill the personal tea. As an aspiring historical fiction writer from the land of hummus and falafel (yep, Israel!), I found this book not just entertaining but seriously instructive and inspiring. Lane's storytelling game is strong, y'all! 🖋️💪

And Mary, Thelma's daughter, with her secrets and the drama of a 'will they, won't they' romance? 🌹😘 Absolute chef's kiss! It's like reading a juicy 1930s soap opera, and I'm here for it.

The nostalgia hit hard, reminding me of my own childhood and tight-knit communities. The worries about war, the gossip, and the scandal – Lane nails it all! 🕰️💔

In a nutshell, "Dark Shadows over Coronation Close" is not just a book; it's a time-traveling, heartstring-tugging experience. I'm officially a fanboy of Lizzie Lane, and if you're into historical fiction with a side of drama and charm, grab this series ASAP! 🎉💙 Can't wait to devour more of Lane's literary delights and see what Coronation Close has in store next! 🏡🔮

This is book #3 in the series & I think that having read one or more of the previous books would really help you understand the characters & their back stories.
In this instalment of the story, it’s now 1938 and rumours of another world war are circulating.

Jenny has really grown as a character and is still working in the pawn shop with Robin – there is an underlying romance between the two of them, but both are married to other people and whilst Jenny’s husband is still overseas in the army, Robin’s estranged wife is determined to let Jenny know who’s the boss!
When Jenny hears that her husband is coming home, she fears that her happy life will be shattered. Elsewhere in Coronation Close, Thelma’s daughter is growing up. She is causing concern for her mother, firstly meeting up regularly with a traveller boy and later with an older man – who turns out to be her biological father.

As always, the local and historical information has been well researched and there is a good sense of time and place.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this audiobook free via NetGalley. Whilst thanks go to the author & publisher for the opportunity to read it, all opinions are my own & my review is left voluntarily.
I enjoyed catching up with the characters again, but I just felt this book was less interesting than the previous two. However, there is plenty of potential for book 4 …

Book three in the Coronation Close Saga and it’s now 1938 in Bristol and rumours of another world war are circulating. I definitely recommend reading the series in order although you could read it as a stand-alone. Having lived in Bristol for most of my life, albeit the other side of Bristol, I really enjoy the local historical facts, some of them are fascinating and it’s clear the author has done extensive research, alongside her personal knowledge. It’s very well written and a great plot as we are back with Jenny and Thelma.

Briefly, Jenny is still working in the pawn shop with Robin but when his estranged wife Doris moves back in and Jenny hears that her husband Roy is coming home she has no alternative but to leave her job. Meanwhile Thelma’s eldest daughter Mary is a cause for concern, firstly meeting up regularly with a traveller and then, when he moves on, she is spotted with an older man.

Outside my normal genres but I am absolutely loving this series. It’s a very compelling read. A good saga spanning a number of eras and including a lot of socioeconomic details that show how people lived during this period. A very enjoyable and entertaining read, bring on book 4, I’ll be there!

A wonderfully researched and well written novel. This is the first Coronation Close book I have read but it was well enough explained to be fine as a starting point. There are spoilers in here for the previous books but as I don't mind spoilers and I'm intrigued to know how they played out, I will be going back to read the prior books when I can.
As Coronation Close is a set of 12 houses in a horseshoe, there is plenty of fodder for a huge series! This is the 3rd book and it is set in 1938. The smell of war is in the air and the neighbourhood is fit to bursting with gossip, new happenings and drama.
Lizzie Lane's characters are very realistic, covering all sorts from all places. I love the way she turns a phrase and manages to teach me new things about the era.
The books topic's don't start at the very beginning but are well thought out and continue on in each book, without any dreaded cliffhangers.
All in all, an excellent slice of life set in prewar England, rich with details and character and full with plenty of heart.
Thanks to Netgalley and the author and publisher for a temporary copy in exchange for an honest review.

Every book Lizzie Lane writes never fails to immerse me in times gone by. This is the third book of the Coronation Close series, and it's great to be returning to the characters. Lizzie Lane writes so well that it feels like you are returning to friends.

Historical sagas such as this one always make me think of my grandparents and their life during and after the war. These characters all feel real, and that makes Coronation Close so easy to pick up and read. The guts everyone had back then are crystal clear within these books. Between family and work, these women do their best to bring their friends and family through whatever hardships life throws at them.

Yet another page turner from an author whose research creates an authentic and gritty tale that's important because we need to keep this history alive. We need to remember how hard it was and how gruelling things were back then.

Lizzie Lane is definitely one of my go-to authors for historical sagas, and she keeps bringing top-notch sagas time after time. A highly recommended series from me!

Dark Shadows over Coronation Close is the latest dramatic wartime saga from much-loved author Lizzie Lane.

Jenny Crawford is troubled by the shadowy presence of a stranger who hovers over Coronation Close with his attention firmly fixed on Thelma Dawson’s house. When challenged, the stranger beats a hasty retreat, but Jenny cannot help but feel uneasy and unsettled. What is this man doing in the Close? What are his intentions? And what does he want with Thelma?

Thelma has her own problems to contend with. Her precocious daughter Mary is growing up and about to leave school and insists that she’s treated like an adult – even though to her mother she will always be her little girl. The two of them are constantly clashing and butting heads, but unbeknownst to her mother, Mary has started a relationship with a much-older man who treats her like the adult she wants to be.

Life is never dull or boring at Coronation Close and with the gathering clouds of war approaching, Jenny and Thelma will need to rely on one another like never before.

Lizzie Lane’s sagas are perfect for reading while curled up on a comfy chair with a great big pot of tea. Dark Shadows over Coronation Close is another captivating saga full of laughter, tears and pathos packed with characters that just bounce off the pages and straight for the reader’s heart.

A wonderfully told page-turner from a terrific storyteller, Dark Shadows over Coronation Close by Lizzie Lane will go down a treat with saga fans everywhere.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am enjoying Lizzie’s Coronation Close series and this third book is just as good as the first two in the series. It was great to catch up again with Jenny and Thelma who are neighbours and great friends. In this book both ladies are finding their past is coming back to haunt them. Jenny’s husband has been off in the army and she suddenly receives word that he’s ill and is coming home to her. Thelma has similar problems when her Ex unexpectedly returns into her life and starts to meet up with their daughter Mary. This is set in 1938 when everything is up in air about the possibility of a Second World War. It was nice to catch up again with all the great characters from Coronation Close. I love this series and give this book five stars. If you like the historical genre then you will definitely enjoy this series

I was real excited to read this. I read a previous book of this series and I loved it.
There are some real serious topics dealt between the pages of the book. But Lizzie Lane has a special writing talent that accomplishs this task in a tasteful way.

Jenny, Thelma and all the neighbors of Coronation Close are doing their best to live week by week. I really love both Jenny and Thelma. They are so different but are the best of friends. I don't always agree with their decisions. And I find myself wanting to shout "No, don't". But they can't hear me.

I hope there will be more to come. I loved the story. Thanks to Boldwood Books, I was able to read this to review.

Book 3 of this brilliant series.

We meet up again with Jenny & Thelma. Jenny now fully settled in the close with her 2 girls and is happy. working for Robin a few hours a week in his shop> then his wife returns home with the girls when her relationship with her current man ends. She causes trouble from the word go.

Thelma, is still seeing her friend from the council. Her son and his wife are going to have a baby and Thema is over the moon. The father of Mary turns up.

A lot going on. Happy times and sad times. WWII draws ever closer.

A great 5* read which I can recommend

I love the families of Coronation Close

I think Lizzie has something up her sleeve for there we’re a lot of loose ends left in this book. Is Bert going to ask Thelma to marry him? Jenny and Robin .. will Robin break free from Doris once and for all without having to go broke? Than there is Cath’s brother moving in to number 5…. what’s up with that? So much going on.
Lizzie please don’t leave us hanging on love Coronation Close!
This is a great series of a time where neighbors were like family, times were so different but we can still relate to what goes in life.. from being. First time Grandmother… loosing a loved one ..forgiveness and understanding….and more.

I was delighted to read more about the happenings on Coronation Close as the characters have come to feel like treasured friends. There is a dark shadow over the close and it's not just talk of another war that is troubling Jenny and Thelma. Who is the strange man watching and what does he want? You will want to read for yourself to find out! I adore the characters and the plot is historical but engaging drama. I loved every minute of my time in the Close and can't wait for more!

What a lovely story. Praise to Lizzie Lane.
This is the third installment in the coronation close. and it's 1930.
It gives you a warm happy hug each time you return to it.
The women are hard-working and industrious., at holding families together.
There are a few dark shadows in the street waiting to be unraveled, and they do. Whenever I get to read a Lizzie lane book I know I'm in for a good read with old friends.

Situations were coming to a head on Coronation Close. Jenny gets a letter from Roy saying he is sick, the Army is discharging him and he will be coming home for good. Her relationship with Robin had been heating up but since both are married they are honoring their vows. A mystery man is seen watching Thelma's cottage and Bert's mother actually turns out to be really nice.

Still not great literature but I like the characters and will continue reading.

Ok

I liked all the drama but things seemed left out. For example, when Roy came home to die, nothing was written about his death or funeral. It just said it in an awkward way many chapters later. I didn't like the writing in this book as much previous books in Coronation Close series.

Although the story ended abruptly all the storylines were tied up nicely. It was cleverly written and covered a lot of unusual situations. I look forward to the next book

Near the end, the author refers to Enid Blyton, in a sort of giveaway. The story holds, and it is pleasant. The style is rustic, the story simplistic. Nonetheless this made me think, many aspects of the book make one reflect. And in the end, all is good.

In Lizzie Lane's most recent novel, Dark Shadows over Coronation Close, I was once again transported back to 1938 and the charming Coronation Close. This time, the story focuses on Thelma and her eldest daughter, Mary.

When Jenny, Thelma's neighbour, notices a man watching Thelma's home, she informs her. While Mary has been keeping a friendship with an older man secret, Thelma believes she knows who the man watching their house is. As we all know, secrets have a way of becoming problems, and the best way to deal with them is by sharing.

I love the beautiful friendship between Thelma and Jenny as they shared each other's challenges and victories.

If you are a fan of Lizzie Lane's Coronation Close series, you do not want to miss out on this one.
