Golden City #1

Wings So Wicked

Rate this book
Fourth Wing meets The Serpent and the Wings of Night in this dark, alluring fantasy romance filled with tension, combat, magic, fae, fallen angels, vampyres, and two stubborn rivals.

Huntyr has fought for survival her entire life. Raised under Lord, the master of assassins in Midgrave, she has spent over twenty years learning to kill the blood-hungry, depraved vampyres that lurk in the darkness. Huntyr is the most lethal fae in the kingdom, which is why Lord chooses her to complete the next mission.

Huntyr must survive Moira Seminary and make it into The Golden City—the mysterious elite society of the few remaining angels and the magic fae who live in luxury with no crime, no poverty, and certainly no vampyres.

Only when she arrives at the academy, she’s forced to room with Wolf—the terrifying fallen angel who happens to know her assassin identity.

Determined to keep her head down in Moira, Huntyr tries her best to ignore Wolf. Over time, though, he not only becomes the only person she can lean on, but the one who might keep her alive through the life-threatening tests to get into The Golden City.

A wolf and his huntress. An academy designed to break them.

Huntyr will do anything to please the assassin master, but Wolf begins to test her in ways she never imagined. Is she strong enough to stick to the mission? Or will new truths—and alliances—put everything at risk?

Wings So Wicked is a new adult fantasy romance with fae, vampyres, fallen angels, magical trials, fierce main characters, dark themes, forced proximity, 'who did this to you' moments, possessive males, rivals to lovers, elite societies, hidden identities, and so much more. Readers who love academy settings, main characters riddled with darkness, angst, and slow burn romances will devour this story!

i’m so tired of books with girls who are supposed to be so strong, so well trained, so badass, practically invincible just for them to suddenly become damsels in distress the moment the love interest is introduced.

Honestly seeing as I’m still recovering from a 6 star read before this… this book didn’t really have a chance to begin with. It was kind of fun at first but then it was all downhill after the 20% mark. It genuinely gave knock off fourth wing with vampires and Fae instead of dragons. The overall premise of the book was intriguing but the execution was not there. Oh god was I so bored. Wolf our MMC single handedly carried this entire book on his back which is ironic seeing as the man didn’t even have his own POV. I knew the FMC was going to piss me off from the very beginning and I unfortunately was not wrong. I just found her inner monologue to be so annoying and she kept making the most idiotic decisions I wanted to SCREAM. I also just didn’t feel the romantic connection at all between our main characters. Like I really couldn’t care less if they have a happy ending together if that says anything. The world building was nonexistent, the magic system made absolutely no sense. Everything just fell so flat and it was so predictable to the point where I had zero investment in the story whatsoever. But I could definitely see how this could be an easy fun read for some people. I however am not some people.

Just not for me personally!

UPDATE:
Ok now that I’m not rambling off a review at 2am… this book absolutely had issues. I hated the ending. But I still read a 450ish page book in one sitting because it kept me entertained. Was this original? Not at all. Did I care? Nope. It’s angsty, it has no world building, but the characters were messy and fun. A friend compared my feelings to watching a silly movie and that’s basically what this was. It was a good time if you don’t think too hard and just enjoy it for what it is!

****

It’s uh… 2am. 5stars.

Was this perfect? No absolutely not. Did I care? Not a single bit.

It was somehow The Serpent and the Wings of Night meets the hunger games meets fourth wing (for the academy) with a sprinkle of crescent city. There were definitely things taken from other books but not in a way that was bad? If that makes sense?

It was addicting and I obviously couldn’t put it down to have read the entire thing tonight into the early hours of the morning. Idk maybe I’ll feel different in the morning but for now it remains 5stars.

OMG... I LOVED THIS SO MUCH! I need book 2 now!!!! 🖤

Fourth Wing meets Serpent & The Wings of Night meets Divergent. It's a freaking beautiful mix of all three of my favorite books and I couldn't be more obsessed.

This book was so addicting. I actually forced myself to put it down a few times so I could just savor it. Wolf is legit perfection and is easily one of my favorite mmc's now.

CHAPTER 26 🥹🥹🥹

Quotes:
"Anything for my deadly huntress."

"I needed him like I needed air. I would crawl for him if he asked. I would beg for him; he only needed to say the words."

If you love:
Fourth Wing
Serpent & The Wings of Night
Hunger Games
Divergent
... you will LOVE this book.

-rivals to lovers
-slow burn
-dark (ish) new adult fantasy
-obsessive/ dark mmc
-vampyres
-magic
-phantoms
-assassin fmc
-academy setting
-plot twist

Fourth Wing x Serpent & the Wings of Night? Maybe if you ordered it on Temu. The FMC is so contradicting and unrelatable. There was exactly 0 world building and the storyline had major holes until a twinkle of development in the last 20 pages. I didn’t connect with a single character or any of their extremely rushed relationships. The idea was there but poorly executed and written. 2.25⭐️

I received an ARC for this book for a fair, honest review. There will be heavy spoilers in this.
This may seem like a negative review, but I specifically gave it three stars because it DID pull my interest so much I finished it in one sitting and it was fun(ish) to read.
This is a fast paced, dark fantasy book with angels, vampires, fae, assassins, magical academy, etc. I think this book COULD have been five stars for me given the plot, but it fell flat. Im going to be pinpointing just some of the things that were missing out of it and what bothered me the most.

My biggest problem with this book was the lack of proper world building. We get bits and pieces of information, but nothing is ever elaborated on.
For example the Moira Seminary, it’s an academy specifically for people trying to get into The Golden City. You have to pass a series of challenges and undergo extensive physical and magic training to get into the city. Our MFC is sent there on a mission by the assassin lord and it’s never told what the mission is. I’m assuming that will be brought up in book two. Anyways, nearly the entirety of the book is spent there and while it’s set in a classroom a handful of times, we basically learn nothing. A dash of information on vampires, mostly as a foreshadowing. We learn about Fae wings, but just the once and not in great detail. “The Bond” is brought up and the Headmistress claims no one is learning about it yet because they’re not ready. That’s all, that’s all that’s said until the main characters bond at the end of the book and the MFC says “This is how the bond worked.” Also very little is told about the differences in magic, it’s just kind of put out there and then everyone starts using it. Except our MFC who tries it once and says “smoke filled my senses, darkness filled my veins, I panicked. My eyes snapped open”. That is also not elaborated on throughout the book. She can conjure fire, just once, until the end when she suddenly can. There’s nothing about any major trials to compete in, besides the very first one and then some knife throwing. The physical training is shown a couple of times, but not enough. They’re all told that there is no killing outside of the classroom, our MFC does end up doing this out of self defense and has the MMC hide the body. The Headmistress eventually finds the body, MFC is freaking out about being caught, andddd nothing else. That’s it.

We essentially know nothing of what the MFC looks like besides her “darkly curly hair”, then learn at the end she has blue eyes. Again, the world building lacked that we didn’t even know this. The friendships felt forced and the most that is learned about her friends is Lanson and at the end, more about Wolf. For a person who is mistrustful of everyone and is solely focused on her mission for Lord, it’s contradicted in her near immediate trust in all her friends, especially Lanson. It really lacked consistency in her personality. I found myself detached from the story in this department as all the relationships felt forced. I just needed more, more from all of it.

Overall, this felt like a rushed version of The Serpent and The Wings of Night. The plot twist could’ve been guessed from the very beginning. It was fast paced, but felt rushed and focused too much on the pace that we miss out on so much of the story. I’d like to read the next book, but not entirely sure after this one.

One last thing, please let there be a different phrase for the next book. Reading “Hells” nearly every page, sometimes multiple times in one paragraph, was irritating

I’m honestly shocked at all of the 5 star/rave reviews for this. This started out interesting but never reached any potential at all. The world building was nonexistent, and the dialogue was extremely juvenile. I wanted to like the MC’s but they were both so boring.

I highly doubt I’ll pick this back up and continue on at a later date.

the lack of plot and messy storyline is killing me. The writing has potential in of itself, but the characters development is nonexistent and everyone in our cast has the personality of soggy cardboard.

↪ I honestly have no idea what I’m in the mood for right now, and whenever I feel like this, I default to indie reads. This one has around 20,000 ratings and 2,000 reviews—so not small by any means, but still criminally underhyped if you ask me.

The blurb on Kindle Unlimited sold me immediately, and so far the vibes are Fourth Wing x The Serpent and the Wings of Night (which I LOVE) with actual real enemies to lovers 😏😏

Safe to say I am very excited and fully ready to dive into this duet 🤭🤭

Wings so Wicked - Emily Blackwood - 0⭐️
———————————————————————

BOOK OVERVIEW

a pile of shit. there isn’t enough words to describe how terrible of a book this is. not one single redeeming quality besides that at the start it had the POTENTIAL to be actually good. it just turned out to be throw up of a bunch of popular books like Forth Wing etc. first off characters, Huntyr actually makes me want to fucking throw myself off a cliff. she has zero self respect, not an ounce of actual talent, and was a damsel in distress the ENTIRE freaking book even though she’s so tough? that brings me to the the half angel half vampyre Wolf. the name is disastrous enough but he was just so not it. the author attempted a dark, mysterious MMC but he was pathetic and honestly a little dumb. don’t even get me started on the storyline and plot. plot? whats that? literally a foreign concept here. I could go on for hours. I genuinely hated almost every single second I wasted, reading this dumpster fire of a novel.

—————————————————————-

WHAT I LIKED

- nothing. actually nothing. congrats to this book for being my first and hopefully last one star of 2024.

—————————————————————-

MORE OF WHAT I DIDNT LIKE

- the attempted romance. Wolf was literally obsessed with her since the moment he saw her FOR NO REASON. he just fell head over heels for some random ass girl that I guess he was supposed to bring to his dad?

- what even was the ending of this book bro. it made the entire story bullshit and fake. she’s actually a queen!! but no she is in a cell like a prisoner! but his dad is obsessed with her because her mom blah blah blah. WHAT THE FUCK.

- THEY BOTH DIED?? and then came back to life. how convenient.

- maybe everything will “spill into darkness” for the last time because I suffered through this book and am not putting myself through another one. I couldn’t care less about this characters and all their dumbassery, they honestly deserve each other.

if chatgpt studied tiktok romantasy and told to generate a story this is basically what it would be

logical holes aside it was just a silly book. like yes! of course our fmc is hot and sexy and every guy wants her (but she doesn't know that) and of course she's the most feared vampyre killer (aptly named huntyr??) who is just soooo lethal and deadly (and apparently dumb or something because her initial instinct is always to panic??) and has a hot smoldering ambiguously dark "male" brooding after her and kills for her and blah blah blah she doesn't love anyone because she's too broken and jaded but he's the same so they just trust and love each other for no reason and form a special bond but they still have secrets kept from each other and OH (spoiler alert) she is the most specialist special lost princess of a fallen kingdom (freaking duh!!!! i knew it from the second i read the prologue) and so on and so forth quite literally any every romantasy cliche possible

anyways thats all you really need to know about this book! but cliches are my guilty pleasure so i will also be reading the next book lol

One of the worst books I've ever read. I would have DNF'd it but it was the book choice for my readers along with 2 other friends. The story line had so much promise but the author fell so far short there really no words. The storyline was so dadly underdeveloped that you literally felt no connection to the characters or storyline. With every new detail was only more questions with nothing really ever getting answered. There was no world building or character building beyond a few details. Will not be reading the second book.

Huntyr is supposed to be a fierce and ruthless assassin, but for someone trained to kill, she makes a lot of frustrating choices. Wolf, the brooding fallen angel, felt like a standard possessive love interest without much depth beyond his protectiveness and cryptic warnings. Their romance, while slow-burn, didn’t feel truly earned.

If you love academy fantasy with a mix of enemies-to-lovers romance and magic trials, you might enjoy it more than I did. But if you’re looking for something truly unique with deep character development and a fresh plot, this one might not be for you.

Wow, I could not put this one down and I cannot wait to add the physical book as a trophy to my shelf.

This book has everything, vampires, vampire hunters, fallen angels, an elite academy, action, drama, romance, spice, one bed(room), a brooding shadow daddy… oh the list goes on!

The story is fast paced to keep you interested and needing more but slow energy to understand all the world building. There are so many twist and turns so buckle up and prepare yourself for a wild ride.

However that ending, prepare yourself to cuss out Emily Blackwood because how dare she leave is hanging like that. She might as well have hung the noose ready for us, because I’m not going to survive the wait until book two.

fun, entertaining, quick-paced - very typical romantasy.

it certainly didn't really have the enemies-to-lovers or the slow burn vibes that i was hoping for, but the love interest was satisfactorily swoonworthy and obsessed with our fmc, which is always fun.

i also thought that the fmc, despite apparently being some incredible, vampyr killing, badass huntress was... frighteningly weak. she seemed to lose an awful lot of fights, even when she was trying to win, and just kept getting rescued. kinda disappointing.

all in all, an easy, addictive, quick romantasy read. nothing stood out, but it provided some amusing entertainment!

concept- banger. execution- majorly lacking.

she was such a cutthroat badass in the first 10-15%… then must’ve sipped some stupid juice as soon as she got to the academy. very frustrating decisions were being made ✨constantly✨

also, love triangles only work sometimes. this was NOT one of those times. just felt incredibly unnecessary, like did not move the plot forward one single centimeter. i would’ve dnf’d if i didn’t listen to the audio. me guessing the twist probably also didn’t help much😶

p.s. lanson is a pussy. that’s the review.

This is so giving middle school.

I hated huntyr so so much, like everything she does just genuinely pisses me off and why is she so stupid omg like girl u spent over 20 years fighting and training yet had to be saved over like 10 times??

the story was literally like any other fantasy, the so called “tests” aren’t even tests?? Like where is the killing?? And as every other fantasy book the first the first guy she likes always betrays her and the hot tall morally grey mmc is always the one she ends up. There were also so many flaws in this stupid book and I have so many questions.

This only gets 2 stars because the ending intrigued me and I liked wolf in the beginning.
Will I read the second book? Idk the ending kinda left me wanting to know more even tho this book was shit 😭

I wrote better fanfictions than this slop of a book when I was in the 9th grade.

How can anybody sit through this book with a straight face? I was mortified about 80% of the time, while the remaining 20% was spent in pure indifference. World building? Poor. Character development? Non-existent. Plot? Unbelievably cliché and predictable. The characters in this book are quite literally insufferable. There was a very meek and feeble attempt at creating the perfect MMC by throwing together popular tropes and hoping for the best. It was just one cringey, forced encounter after the next. This book is insta-lust final boss and I don’t even want to think about how horribly written the FMC is.

academia x training montages x bonds

It has been a while since I read a book with fallen angels and this has brought back my obsession. It’s so easy to read, so easy to become invested. If you’re looking for a romantasy duology that will get you out of a reading slump, do this! But be prepared for a cliffhanger for this book…

Read this if you’re in the mood for…
- angels, vampires and fae
- betrayal
- academia
- high stakes trials
- training montages
- bonds
- slow burn
- rivals to lovers

I really enjoyed this book!! It’s fast paced without losing plot or depth and has a slow burn romance that I was itching for them to finally give in. A couple of the reveals felt a but predictable but it didn’t bother me! I’m immediately starting book 2 and hoping for a dual pov!

Here are a few of my favorite things…
- oh he’s obsessed with her from day 1
- love any book with a bond where they can feel each other through it

I would recommend!

DNF 41% through when Huntyr turns down Lanson, she's been a complete hypocrit and straight up lies to the reader to make it seem anything more than she just wants the taller dude

His eyes were so large and innocent. I envied him, I really did. He didn’t have the heaviness on his shoulders that I had grown so accustomed to. He wasn’t from Midgrave. He didn’t have to claw and beg just to make it through the day alive. Fae from the surrounding cities seemed… happy.

Hahahahahahaha go fuck yourself, YOU never had to worry about making it through the day, you had your entire life a very privileged standing (considering where you're from) because the Lord sheltered you, fed you and trained you. HE's actually the one who's been on the streets, remember?

"My father practically disowned me after that. I lived on the streets for a while, debated running away dozens of times. I didn’t have a future to begin with, and without my brother, I felt lost. My father told me that the only way I could prove myself to the family was to get into The Golden City. He said once I did that, I would be forgiven.”

The guy had his brother die, his family throw him away, blames himself for it and he's in a death tournament, still manages to be nice to everyone and help whenever he can, putting himself in a worse position to enter the Golden City since he's essentially teaching YOU the basics of physical combat, meaning HE doesn't get any training, and you're happy to just do that to him, just have him waste days, WEEKS of vital training time just because you want to keep your secret, and you call yourself a friend of his? You're litterally the one causing him the most damage out of any person here, since you're effectively having him waste his time on training you don't need.

And it couldn't just be that, it also had to be "ugh, white knight, how boring, this guy has never struggled, he doesn't get me", while it's litterally the opposite (and of course we're not gonna think THAT of the guy who was born with a genetic advantage over 99% of the population, who proudly proclaims he doesn't have to train to pass the exam, yeah i guess he struggled for sure).

No, i'm not saying Huntyr has to like Lanson back because he's "nice", that's incel bullshit. I'm saying she gives straight up false reasons as for why, completely forgets said reasons when thinking of Wolf and actively damages Lanson's chances at passing the exams by intentially holding him back when he's been an absolute gem of a guy, the very least you can do is politely tell him you're not interested and to stop wasting his time "training" you.
