Window of Time

Rate this book
A kingdom in the future, a girl from the past, and a stained-glass window that can’t be found.

Mia Miller just needed a moment to breathe and admire the stained-glass window in the chapel before she had to plaster on a fake smile for her only sister’s wedding reception. Her artist’s eye drew her to the window but something else entirely made her fall through it. Now she’s stuck in a strange land, a different time, mistaken for a princess, and the stained-glass window nowhere to be found.

With Rebels stealing his Kingdom’s low food supplies, Prince Liam Dunne agrees to an Engagement to secure better trading routes. When the princess arrives without a shred of luggage or her entourage but plenty of anxiety, his heart has a hard time staying out of it. Princess Amelia challenges what he believes in—in a world where faith is eradicated. But when the truth comes out about her true identity, will he have the courage to live up to his family’s legacy?

I have loved the stained glass window at the center of this series since I read the first book, and even though Erin R. Howard’s installment is dystopian fiction – which isn’t a genre I typically prefer – I had to see the series & the window through to the end. And I’m so very glad I did! Window of Time is entertaining and romantic with very believable worldbuilding (honestly, I could easily see the US turning into this type of country at some point in the hopefully very distant future) and great characters. The time travel element at the beginning of the story fits well with the dystopian plot, and I was invested in how Mia would handle the dilemma she’s fallen into. One minute she’s her sister’s maid of honor in their tiny Tennessee town’s chapel; the next she is in a very different world where she is mistaken for Princess Amelia of the Western Sector and Prince Liam Dunne’s bride.

Mia is a very likable character from the moment we meet her at her sister’s wedding, and falling vicariously through the window with her into a strange future made us instant friends. Her warm heart and vibrant personality win the hearts of many in the Southern Sector too, including the handsome Prince Liam. I really enjoyed these two together and their chemistry, the color that Mia brings into Liam’s life and the affection that Liam offers her in return. He’s a good guy with a big heart, a smart mind, and a burden for his people and his legacy. The fact that faith is outlawed in this version of the future United States added compelling layers to the plot and to Liam’s character, not to mention complicating things for Mia.

Bottom Line: Imagine a version of the United States where the country is divided into sectors that each operate as respective monarchies, where faith is outlawed, and where technology is limited. This is the world that Mia Miller falls into in Window of Time – through the very special stained glass window that has presided over all the books in this series so far. Erin R. Howard crafted an intriguing dystopia and compelling characters that captured my interest and kept me invested in the plot, though I do wish the time travel loose threads had been tied up just a bit more. The romance (which we all know is my favorite part) is swoony and sweet and felt almost like a fairy tale (also a win in my book). You can read this as a standalone just fine, but I highly recommend reading all four books because each one is enjoyable and well-written – including Window of Time!

The final book brings the series to a sweet and beautiful conclusion. Mia falls through a stained glass window and finds herself cast into the future where is is mistaken for a princess. You won't want to miss her struggle to hide her true identity to save herself from certain punishment for impersonating a royal. Prince Liam feels duty bound to save his subjects from starvation by agreeing to a strategically arranged marriage. I cheered, laughed, and cried as they fall in love in the web of danger and deceit.

Drawn to the stained-glass window by a flash of light, Mia Miller stumbles and falls through the window and one-hundred fifty years into the future. The Dunne family is the royal family of the Southern Sector of the United States, and Mia is mistaken for Princess Amelia Lockridge of the Western Sector, who is to marry Prince Liam Dunne. It’s a marriage of political necessity for the impoverished and troubled Southern Sector.

Caught in a time warp, Mia wants to go home and searches for a way to escape before the wedding takes place, but the stained-glass window no longer exists. In the meantime, with the aid of Luna, her maid, she learns about her new place of residence, the royal family, and the prince she’s to marry.

Prince Liam is an admirable protagonist, accepting marriage to a stranger as a matter of his duty to the kingdom and its people and showing kindness to the anxious Mia (aka Princess Amelia). He takes his princely responsibilities seriously and works hard to prove he’s worthy of his father the king’s trust.

In this time travel fantasy, the author imagines what the United States might become in the future. The characters act like real people. Conflict, suspense, and action keep the story moving forward.

Window of Time is a love story, sort of a fairy tale without magic. You can read it as a stand- alone novel, but I recommend reading the three other books in the Stained-glass Legacy Series first to learn the history of the Dunne family and the stained-glass window.

I received an ARC of Window of Time without expectation of return. Opinions expressed are my own.

Window of Time, book four of the Stained Glass Legacy Series, was highly enjoyable. Mix a little time/portal travel, a royal romance, and a dystopian future where belief in God has been outlawed, and you have a riveting story. When Mia falls through a stained glass window at her sister’s present-day wedding, she finds herself in a future she could never have imagined, many years in the future. The Dunne family not only still owns the land the now-dilapidated chapel sits on, but are also the reigning family of their sector after some hard times in the USA.
While this is book four (book 1 – 1920; book 2 – 1970; book 3 – present day; book 4 (this book) – about 150 years in the future), it can be read as a standalone. The faith element, rather than being about a character who doesn’t believe or has lost his/her faith, depicts individuals who still HAVE their faith but must hide it or be punished.
Highly recommend this for those who love fantasy, romance, royals—or simply a great story!

Wow. Just wow! This book, which is designed to complete the Stained Glass Legacy series, failed in just one thing! I makes me want to read more about the Dunne family. When I first heard about it, I was so intrigued by the concept of this series. How does one turn a historical fiction series into the present and also a dystopian future?! It's not any kind of series that I had encountered before. Besides the time and the genre changes, this series was also written by 4 different authors! I had no trouble going from one author to the next. They really meshed well together. I wish I could continue following the Dunne family on into the future or even in between during the skipped generations. Such a great concept and well-written! I received a digital ARC of this book with no expectations in return. The opinions and comments above are my own.

Goodreads seriously needs to update their genres. This book is contemporary with a time jump to a future kingdom with a castle and political struggle— which really blends, sci-fi, fantasy, and dystopia. Speculative would be the best genre fit, but that is not offered in goodreads. Speculative aspect aside, this could be considered a sweet romance. Lively, fun entertainment with just the right amount of tension to keep the reader intrigued.

Best of all, imho, is that I get to comp this.

With a perfect hint of fairytale, this dystopian future hits all of my favorite dystopian tropes while touching the world of princesses and princes. So much is lost to the passage of time, but still history touches these pages. What a great set of complicated and driven characters! Loved this book! You would too!

Such a fun and imaginative end to this series. All four books tie together, despite being years and years apart. It was fun to see bits and pieces of the other three books woven into this one, even though it's set 150 years in the future. While I hope our real future isn't like the one in this book, it was nice to see the faith of the other books pull through to the dystopian end. Great finale.
