About the author

Nikki Moustaki is the author of The Bird Market of Paris: A Memoir, as well as twenty-five books on the care and training of exotic birds. She holds an MA in creative writing, poetry, from New York University, an MFA in creative writing, poetry, from Indiana University, and an MFA in creative writing, fiction, from New York University. She has received a National Endowment for the Arts grant in poetry, as well as many other national writing awards. She splits her time between New York City and Miami Beach.

Love Dummies books

When you want simple, precise books..you can’t go wrong with these books. So I got this to remind me about parakeets. Had one many years ago. Refreshed my memory and gave me new facts, like can’t use Teflon type cookware because the fumes are dangerous for a parakeet! Good info about cages, food, cleanliness and playtime. Would recommend to anyone thinking about buying a parakeet.

This is a great book. I wanted to buy Parakeets and this book taught me almost everything to know about Parakeets. Now I have two healthy Parakeets and only because of this book. I highly recommend this book to any bird lover or if you are looking to get a Parakeet.

As a new parakeet owner, I found this book very informative. It includes tips on:

- Telling the difference between the English budgie and American parakeet, and how to decide which you want
- Behavior, and what to look for when selecting a bird
- How and when to get started training
- Signs of illness/injury, first aid, and how to make a hospital cage to keep your bird in until you can get him/her to the vet
- Feeding: what overall type of diet is best, which foods are safe and which to avoid
- Basic cage setup
- Acclimation and taming
- Wing and nail trimming
- One parakeet, or a pair of 'keets?
- Bird-proofing your house or a room
- Teaching your bird to talk (Did you know male parakeets can learn *hundreds* of words and phrases? I didn't!)

Doesn't include much information on specific vocalizations or housetraining. It's also a little repetitive, but the information presented is good.

Great source of info, perfect for a beginner budgie parent

This book was exactly what I was looking for. My grandparents had budgies back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when I was young when a lot of the stuff we know now wasn’t common. My nana used exclusively non-stick pans for instance and both grandparents were heavy smokers, tragically little bird lives were lost multiple times until I begged them to not get any more. This book would have been a treasure then, it still is one now. I have my first pair of budgies as an adult on my own and this book was exactly what I needed. I’m on the way to hand taming them well and they’ve started saying a few words each so I’m very excited and thankful for this book!

A great quick-reference. It didn't get too technical but provided enough information for me to feel confident with my newly acquired Parakeet. It will be a great on the bookshelf for when I need help. I have yet to read any other parakeet books, so for me this was a good start.

tis is a good book. it tells you all about parakeets. it was very useful to people getting a pet parakeet. it told me every thing i had to do when i was getting one.
