Everyone in Seattle knows the name Melody Louise Scott. The little blonde girl with a mischievous grin disappeared three days ago, and every night since her photo has appeared on the news with pleas for any information that leads to her being found safe. Not everyone knows the name Jenna Morris who was just reported missing. The only difference between the two girls is that Melody is white and Jenna is black.
Fearing the worst and knowing the police won’t give her daughter priority, Jenna’s mother hires Ari so she’ll know that finding her daughter is the top priority for at least one person. Ari agrees to take the case, putting her at odds with a Detective Lorne, whom she first encountered during the Gavin debacle. Lorne has grown suspicious of what happened that night and uses the opportunity of working together to try and figure out what secrets Ari is hiding.
Meanwhile Ari becomes friends with a British canidae Millicent “Milo” Duncan, another wolf whose intentions may not be as pure as they first appear. With Ari distracted by the case and keeping Detective Lorne at arms’ length, Dale becomes more suspicious of the new arrival’s true motives for being in Seattle.
Geonn Cannon is a male author who grew up in Oklahoma, thousands of miles from the nearest coastline, who found his calling in stories about women who live on an island in the Pacific Northwest. In 2010, Geonn became the first male author to win the prestigious Golden Crown Literary Society Award for his novel "Gemini." In 2015, he won it again for "Dogs of War." He has written two official tie-in novels for Stargate SG-1, and his Riley Parra novels have been turned into an Emmy-nominated webseries by Tello Films. His first name is pronounced just like "John."
Great series! once again Geonn did an incredible job giving us/readers a more indepth look into Ari's life with her Mother--the relationship between them & their herd plus it also involved all this hunting stuff. An enjoyable story from the first page to the very ending--highly recommended series to everyone!
This was better than the first book. I really enjoyed this one. While I liked book one, I thought this was a good step up. If you are new to this series the main character is a werewolf who happens to be a private investigator. I love that these books mix mystery and paranormal together. You had a really interesting case of a missing girl, and the paranormal wolf side is heating up when someone from Ari’s past makes an entrance.
I always think you should read books in order. The prequel and book one, both are tied in with this book. However, enough is explained so if you need to skip a book, I think you would be fine.
I have been having fun reading this series. So far it does get better with every book so I’m excited to read book 3.
I don't usually read the second book in a series first, but this time it was an accident. Kudos for making it work even for newcomers.
Ari and Dale are P.I.s - and Ari is a werewolf who can change at will (but she prefers the term "canidae"). Now, they take on the case of a missing little girl. The detective stuff is pretty good, and the mystery is fun to read.
Aside from the mystery, however, there's a part concerning werewolf politics and some plots to stave off a war through an arranged lesbian marriage (seriously? In this day and age? Arranged marriages?). The more I think about that, the less sense it makes, other than announcing that the next volume in the series will probably be about a werewolf-werewolf hunter war.
This is a good mystery/suspense novel with a paranormal slant that makes things a little more interesting. The writing is very good, with a unique and interesting plot and good pacing. I especially appreciate the strong main characters that are well developed and easy to like. I really love Dale and the strength of her love and devotion to Ariadne. I think this second book of the series is better written and stronger than the first book, mainly because we get better insight into Ariadne and her history. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
The first part of the book was a decent read, but even though I really like Ari and Dale, I was annoyed with the way the story developed, it seemed to be turning into a yet another ridiculous werewolf saga. The latter part of the story was fine, but it seems that the author has decided that the ‘PI with a twist’ storyline is going to make way for a war between wolves and humans.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The mystery/thriller aspects, with little girls being kidnapped, didn’t get too dark, but certainly upped the stakes. The first two kidnappings don’t seem to be connected, but all assumptions get turned on their heads with the third. There’s an interesting police detective occasionally helping out a little, and Milo gets involved as well. The action was great and kept me glued to the page.
I love the romance and sex. Dale and Ari have a beautiful same-sex relationship, including explicit sex, and it’s really enjoyable to read. Milo’s interest in them doesn’t result in the stereotypical flaring, unthinking tempers that I’m used to seeing in heterosexual romance, which is nice. People use their heads in this book.
Someone from Ari’s past shows up, and a secondary plot about old grudges between hunters and canidae comes into play. This is interesting without overshadowing the missing girls plot, and it leads to some compelling revelations.
I received this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review.
A really brilliant novel. To call this book a mystery would be an understatement, it's a mystery within a mystery, leaving the reader constantly needing to read on to discover what will happen next. It's full of intrigue and excitement and just as one mystery seems to be solved another one arises some connected others may be connected or may not be, constantly keeping the reader in suspense is one of the strengths of this wonderful novel.
Although part of the "underdogs" series it is a stand alone book. Mr Cannon cleverly explains to new readers any previous information needed by still managing to make this information new and relevant for previous reader of this magnificent series.
One question I would ask was when did Milo learn about Ari's collar as she seemed to know about it before seeing her?
I really would recommend this fascinating book. This is the third book in this series I have read and I am eagerly awaiting the next.
