Kai

Life in the Red Widow Crew is a twisted dance of loyalty and deception, suffocating me like a straitjacket. I yearned for something more, an escape from the shadows that clung to my every step. Cue Audry crashing into my world like a hurricane. But the longer she sticks around, the more it feels like we're dancing on the edge of danger. Especially when a bounty is slapped on her head, turning our wild ride into a rollercoaster of risks I never signed up for.

The story plunges you into a high-stakes world of danger, deception, and deep-seated family legacies. This mafia romance unfolds through the eyes of Audry, who finds her preordained life as the heiress of the Santora Hotel upended by a deadly incident that exposes her family's sinister roots in her hometown. Alongside Kai, a member of the Red Widow Crew, she navigates a perilous path of newfound threats and a bounty that puts both their lives in jeopardy.

While the relationship between Audry and Kai offers a mix of intensity and mutual discovery, so many elements of the plot just leaves me wanting for something more. I think I keep waiting for a little bit more...meat (?) to the story but when I didn't get it, I quickly lost interest in the characters. It's fast-paced and pretty straightforward mafia story. I guess I just needed more to make it more compelling.

Thanks for the ARC!

The devil you don’t know had me hooked!!
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This story is about Audry and Kai.

A.D Marie did it again!! You know a book is going to be good when there is spice in the first chapter. 💜

I love Kai, he is the hero of this book. Something happens to Audry and Kai is there by her side. He doesn’t even know her and he is there. He is there to help fight her battles. He stands beside her, even with all his problems.

I love the friendship with Liam, Logan and Carson. Even with all the tension in the book, their bickering made me laugh. Carson is a bada$$ girl. I can’t wait for her and Logan’s book.

The twist and turns in this book had me, I could not put this book down. It was hard working when all I wanted to do was read this book. This book is full of so much spice and tension. I loved the characters and story line. A.D Marie did a wonderful job writing this book and I can’t wait for the next one.

I 100% recommend you read this book on it’s release day April 11th. Also read book 1 Missed Connections with Liam and Sofya story (Which is available on Amazon and on KU).

Thank you for letting me be part of your wonderful arc team!!

The Devil You Don’t Know by Adelaide Halliday
ARC Read: Releases April 2024

Oooo such a good read. Audrey is high up in the society, but doesn’t know exactly what comes with it or will eventually. A little lost but trying to find herself then she meets him, Kai. Kai has battles of his own and is working through those as well when Audrey gets thrown into the mix. It all happens fast, pasts collide and get thrown into their mix, but they have each other, or do they?!

I’m ready for Book 3, I need to know more of the ins and outs of the society. I want to know more about their families and just what happens next in general!

Welcome to Santora Hotel… Enjoy your stay.

When Adelaide announced she would be writing Kai and Audry’s story, I started watching her socials like a hawk. I knew I needed to be on the ARC team. My introduction to Adelaide’s writing was Missed Connections (released under A.D. Marie) and I’m offended that her book hasn’t gotten more attention. Missed Connections was one of my favorite indie releases in 2023. The Devil You Don’t Know is just as amazing as I was expecting. It’s technically book two in the Red Widow Crew series, but I would read this one first if you haven’t already read Missed Connections because canonically, it happens first.

Audry is our messy FMC. Ever since her best friend, Sofya’s husband killed himself and Sofya ran away, Audry has been drowning herself in drink and men. She finds herself at Dockside Dive, drunk and texting Quinton. Her favorite hookup is there on a date (Audry doesn’t know this) but has no problem joining Audry in the bathroom for a quick funsie.

Kai is our grumpy MMC, a part of the Red Widow Crew. He’s more reserved than his chosen brothers, preferring to use kn!ves over guns. He’s at Dockside Dive and happens to see Quinton’s texts at the bar, and watches as Quinton ditches his date. Kai decides to let the date know and leaves with her. Quinton catches up to them outside and tries to take on Kai. Naturally, this doesn’t end well for Quinton. The next night, Kai decides to go back to Dockside Dive to try and find the mysterious piece of @$$ that Quinton hooked up with. No loose ends.

Kai finds Audry, not knowing that she was who he was looking for. He comes between Audry and Nate, who refuses to take no for an answer. Audry turns Kai down and leaves, only to be cornered by Nate in an alley. What happens next turns Audry and Kai’s worlds upside down and threatens to destroy the carefully constructed truce that keeps the city from becoming a warzone. The plot follows Audry as she unintentionally uncovers terrible family secrets, plunging her into a perilous world of lies.

Adelaide Halliday's "The Devil You Don't Know" is a captivating blend of action, romance, and intrigue that had me hooked from the start. Halliday's brilliant narrative keeps readers interested throughout, flawlessly moving between heart-pounding action and sweet moments of romance. Kai only has eyes for Audry and it's absolutely everything. The chemistry between Audry and Kai is evident, lending dimension to their turbulent journey. I am so happy that I was given the opportunity to be on the ARC team for this book. Thank you Adelaide and I can't wait to get a physical copy!

My Rating: ★★★★★

Adelaide Halliday's "The Devil You Don't Know" is a gripping tale that seamlessly weaves together elements of action, romance, and redemption. As a member of the ARC team, I had the privilege of diving into this addictive narrative before its official release, and I must say, it did not disappoint.

The story revolves around Audry, who finds herself thrust into a world of danger and deception after a fateful encounter leads her to uncover dark secrets about her family's legacy. Alongside her is Kai, a member of the enigmatic Red Widow Crew, who becomes entangled in Audry's tumultuous journey towards truth and freedom.

Halliday masterfully crafts a narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The pacing is relentless, seamlessly transitioning between heart-pounding action sequences and tender moments of romance. The dynamic between Audry and Kai is electric, their chemistry palpable as they navigate the treacherous waters of their circumstances.

What truly sets "The Devil You Don't Know" apart is its richly drawn characters and intricate world-building. Audry and Kai are flawed yet compelling protagonists, each grappling with their own demons as they fight to carve out their own destinies. The supporting cast is equally vibrant, adding layers of complexity to an already gripping narrative.

Moreover, Halliday's prose is nothing short of captivating. Her vivid descriptions breathe life into the gritty backdrop of the story, immersing readers in a world rife with danger and intrigue. From the bustling streets of the town to the shadowy corridors of the Santora Hotel, every setting feels vividly real, serving as the perfect backdrop for Audry and Kai's tumultuous journey.

In conclusion, "The Devil You Don't Know" is a must-read for fans of action-packed thrillers with a side of romance. Adelaide Halliday has crafted a masterpiece that will keep readers glued to the pages until the very end. I, for one, cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this book, as it is undoubtedly deserving of a permanent place on my bookshelf.

This dark mafia romance is Book 2 in the Red Widow Crew. While can be read as a standalone I would recommend you read Book 1 as these characters do appear in this story.

Book 2 is Audry and Kai’s story. Audry’s family is wealthy, and they view her as the cluck up. The one who makes bad decisions. The one they are disappointed in. Audry does have some self-destructive behaviors including meaningless hookups. The behavior is being used as a coping mechanism to deal with the pain of being alone in her family and the fact that her best friend has left the area.

Kai is the member of the Red Widow Crew unalived, unknowingly, Audry’s latest hook up at at club. He has been tasked with finding the woman this guy was with and to “take care of her.” On his way back to the club, he stumbles across Audry being SA in an alley. As he approaches, Audry takes matters into her own hands and unalives him.

I won’t give any spoilers, but this story takes off from that point. I love these two characters. Audry brings out Kai’s protective instincts and he does everything he can to help her overcome the SA. Audry doesn’t care who he is or where he is from, she just wants the man who finally made her feel.

There are some twists and turns with secrets about Audry’s family come to light. This plot keeps you hooked, and you get invested in the characters and their lives. The smexy times are smoking hot and these two burn up the pages.

This is not a pretty story. It is raw and gritty but so worth your time. If you like your romances a little on the darker side, grab this book.

The Devil You Don't Know by Adelaide Halliday.
Releases April 2024.

CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS!

This is my first read written by Adelaide, though it is the second release of the series the events of this book are pre book 1.

This book is fast paced in places and slower in others, The main characters are a little bit shallow but we get enough backstory to move the story along. I would definitely describe this book as romance with a splash of plot which is perfect for those that prefer low plot high romance and for those that need a simple (ish) read between intricate plot books. I'm guessing the main plot stretches across the series which I definitely look forward to finding out!

The MFC experiences on page trauma in this book (again check the trigger warnings!) and we follow her through the process of coping with her new reality, I do think the author wrote this scenario very well. I'm sure some would disagree with this opinion because people love to decide how others must process feelings, trauma, grief etc. the reality is that the characters process of coping is accurate to many peoples real life process.

Over all I enjoyed reading it, it did take me a bit longer than my usual reading time but that's life's fault not the book!

Would I recommend it? Yes, to the right people.

Have I recommended it? Yes, it is now on my friends TBR!

Will I read more from this author? Yes, 100%!

Some Tropes:
🖤 Rich Girl x Mafia Boy
🔪 Touch Her & ☠️
🖤 Forced Proximity
🔪 Sweet Only To Her

The Characters:

Audry is from a wealthy family with dark secrets that she is not privy to. She lives her life under her parent’s microscope and does what she can to shirk the shackles she feels weigh her down.

Kai is the victim of a terrible upbringing that leads him to the mafia life when he’s caught with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar. With his new found family, he felt invincible, until tragedy left him heartbroken and jaded.

My Opinion:

I loved this book. I was hooked, I was devouring, and I didn’t want to put it down. The spice, the story, the character growth, the advocacy, all of it was incredible.

Audry became a woman reborn and I was cheering for her. She didn’t cower, she didn’t break, she fought back and she grew. I loved that for her.

I will say that after reading Missed Connections, I thought I would get more of an ending from this book. The way Missed Connections ended, I wanted background on Audry and Kai’s story, yes, but I REALLY wanted to know more about what happened when Audry told her family about Kai. What happened with the crew?

All in all, I highly recommend this series. I’m dying for the rest. I need to know what happens to Logan and Ms. (M) — if there even is anything and Carson? Who the heck has Carson’s attention?! Inquiring minds would like to know 🥲

Audry is a party girl that is blind to her family's involvement with the local crime underworld. Her family's business sits directly in neutral territory, where all the families can come together without worry of chaos and death.

Kai is a part of the Red Willow Crew who is just trying to get away with his two best friends and one's sister, to make a life on their own without all the chaos and drama that surrounds the Crew. Unfortunately, Kai, Liam, and Logan are in debt to Liam's father due to an accident that cost the Crew millions of dollars in product.

Audry and Kai cross paths at a local bar. They don't hit it off, but later on in the evening, Kai saves Audry. From there, their wild story begins. After Kai discovers Audry's identity as the daughter of a Santora, the family that keeps the neutrality amongst the city's crime underworld. Will Audry and Kai be able to overcome the obstacles that are presented to them by her family and his Crew?

The Devil You Don't Know is the second book in the Red Willow Crew series, and it is a stand alone book. However, I'd suggest reading book one, Missed Connections, as well. Either before or after, but definitely read it. I devoured this book in a day. I loved how the party girl, known for her wild side by her family, is falling for a Red Willow Crew bad boy. Their story is exactly how you'd expect - a rollercoaster of emotions and events. The book keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

💕ARC REVIEW💕 THIS BOOK DOES HAVE TRIGGER WARNINGS. Release date : 4/11/2024
Tropes : 1) Forced Proximity 2) mafia romance 3) morally gray characters 4) Touch her and Die
This book is a captivating journey into the intertwining lives of Kai and Audry. I have not read the first book (Missed connections - the stories of Sofya and Liam) but chemistry between the Kai and Audry is palpable, and the slow burn adds depth to their connection. The author skillfully navigates sensitive themes, showcasing Audry's resilience in the face of adversity. The plot twists, like the “mysterious” body on the beach and Audry's unexpected encounter with Samuel, keep the narrative engaging. As the story unfolds, I'm eager to see how the Santora legacy and the Red Widows play into the unfolding drama. A compelling read that balances romance, suspense, and character development seamlessly. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mafia romances, but I do hope in the next book that there is more appreciation showed for Kai by Audry and that we learn more about the family dynamics.

There are a couple handfuls of grammatical / spelling errors, but it is an ARC read, so I didn’t really mind them too much and assume they will be fixed before publication.

Thank you for allowing me to/ us to read this before its release date.

The Devil You Don't Know is the second instalment of the Red Widow Crew series by Adelaide Halliday, but this book is a prequel to the events of book one.

The novel's beginning throws you into the deep end. We are quickly introduced to Audry and her preferred lifestyle, which is deeply frowned upon by her prestigious family. Audry is self-assured and rebellious, which makes her such an interesting FMC when you understand her familial problems.

Kai is your typical mafia romance MMC, obviously up to no good but a very sweet character. The introduction to Kai and Audry's relationship is sudden and exciting, however, the chemistry between the two isn't strong enough to justify the rash decisions that are made. Audry goes through a very traumatic experience and it seems strange that she is so willing to trust Kai and the people he's involved with, however, he does seem genuinely supportive of her.

I started to struggle mid-way through the book, whereas the action was enough the keep me interested, the relationship between the FMC and MMC was very surface-level and it felt like it hindered Audry's character development, which is what caught my attention in the beginning as I wanted to see how Audry grows.

I managed to finish the book and it was an easy read, but it didn't really progress enough for me to eagerly want to seek out the ending.

I was surprised I enjoyed this book so much. It was a much more realistic picture of gang life and trying to “get out” of the life. Audry is shaken by tragedy and Kai is in a battle of who he has had to be versus who he is trying to become. The opening chapters are intense and fast paced, definitely read the trigger warnings (I added some of the big ones below). I hate books that include unnecessary violence in an attempt to add to the plot line, but in this case it sets up the conflict of the book and drives the plot forward. It definitely explored how different survivors will react to different acts of violence. The only part I felt was a little rushed was the final fight scene, it was a little difficult to visualize as I read it, then the book came to quick end. When I realized that the author had written this as a prequel to Liam and Sofya’s story I was relieved, and excited to continue to read the characters story through other point of views. Missed Connections picks up where The Devil You Don’t Know left off and is to fill in some of the gaps in the time Liam was “away”.

Trigger Warnings: real time rape scene with flash backs throughout the book, gun/knife violence, death of loved ones, descriptions of torture, accidental murder of a loved one

Ok so this is the 2nd book of the series of 'Red Widow Crew'. We are introduced to Audrey and Kai’s story.
FYI: This takes places before book one.

Audrey is a high class/party girl and one night she undergoes something life changing.

Now Kai is part of the mafia gang *Red widow crew. And he happens to stumbled upon the tragic life changing accident that Audrey undergoes. He helps her and swears to protect her, Not knowing how much his life would change along with hers.

This story is filled with trauma and sexual tension. The forced proximity has them go through their own struggles as they come to terms with their life and the new changes. Along the way we get to watch both grow into themselves. I really enjoyed the backstory. I feel like I know the characters a bit better. Can’t wait to reads the upcoming books.

- The Devil You Don’t Know was such a great read, it’s the second book in the Red Widow Crew Series but occurs before the events of Missed Connections! Definitely check trigger warnings before reading!

- Audry is a member of the Santora family, high class and a party girl, who doesn’t quite know what being a Santora means. Kai is a part of the Red Widow Crew and was living a normal gang life until he stumbled upon something life changing happening to Audry.

- Kai decides that it’s now his job to protect her not realizing that she’s going to change his life too. The story is very fast paced and detailed and I love how Adelaide wrote about Audry and Kai dealing with their own struggles and coming to terms with everything.

Thank you Adelaide for the ARC, I can’t wait for book 3!

If you’re a fan of mafia books written by authors like Serena Akeroyd or SJ Tilly and feel that reading slump sinking in right after, try A.D. Marie with her Red Widow Crew Series. The books can be read as a standalone, but you won’t want to. Book 1, “Missed Connections,” will have you incredibly hooked in the universe, and Book 2, “The Devil You Don’t Know,” hits everything I love in a mafia romance.

Like Book 1, A.D. Marie hits readers hard and fast, which I love. “The Devil You Don’t Know” is sometimes dark, gritty, and raw with emotions. Kai is that tough guy who is gentle and protective over Audry when tragedy strikes. I love how he empowers her through the story. Some emotionally intense scenes are pretty graphic as well, and A.D. Marie was able to pull me into the story as if everything was happening right in front of me.

Spice, suspense, and action are all wrapped into a solid plot that flows well. “Devil You Don’t Know” is well worth the read.

Kai and Audrey have such a unique relationship but the way these two work together makes them amazing.

“Sometimes the best things come from awkwardness.”

Audrey’s the party girl that has been brought to her knees. One night changes her whole life, while also being her terrible sadness has brought her the best thing to happen to her.

Kai was living the normal gang life following in the line. Until he stumbled upon a tragic situation. In that moment he knew Audrey was his to protect, he just didn’t know how much his life would change along with hers.

Love story filled with trauma and sexual tension throughout. Along the way we get to watch both MCs grow into themselves and find their true self’s. Book two takes places before book one so that took my for a loop at first but we get more backstory to help along the way.

I absolutely LOVED this book by Adelaide!

I haven't read Missed Connections, but it is on my TBR to read ASAP!

Adelaide's storywriting ability are incredible. I feel that the pace of the story itself was really good. It was a slow burn when needed to be and also a heartstopping read at other times. Audry was the BEST choice in a FMC. Her character growth from beginning to end was beautiful to see, she really grows into herself, being a strong-minded and willing woman, not letting anyone dim her light or make her back down. We love a strong FMC! The storyline had an equal balance of romance, suspense, plot twists and action! I will say, that this book does has some TW's so definitely read it before choosing to read. For my introduction to Adelaide, this book did not disappoint! I will definitely reread this again after reading book 1 and CAN NOT wait for book 3!

3,5🌶️

This was a really good, dark mafia romance filled with trauma and emotions. It's part of the Red Widow Crew, but as I read it, it could be read alone or out of order. That said, I absolutely recommend reading the first book in the series as well because it's wicked good. I was already in love with the book by 5% in, because Adelaide knows how to grip you straight away.

The story follows Audry and Kai (Audry was Sofyas best friend in the first book, where she first is introduced and Kai is Liams best friend), and how they met and all that happens after that. It is a raw story and I highly recommend you to read the trigger warnings which is listed in the beginning.

Happy reading😏

Check TW in this book as trauma happens on page

This book handled some very sensitive topics very well. We all handle trauma and healing differently and this story follows Audry as she learns to do just that. She finds comfort in Kai, her hero and the man that just keeps showing up. But he has secrets he won't share with her.

As she gets comfortable with some of his friends, Kai has to decide if she is worth the risk of bringing her into his life. And showing her the devil he believes himself to be.

Very hard fought HEA. Lots of angst. Amazing spice. And the first chapter spice that we love with an AD Marie dark romance novel.

Thank you for the ARC! Definitely recommend this book.

• thank you to the author, Adelaide Halliday for an ARC of The Devil You Don't Know.

this is the second book in the Red Widow Crew series. this book follows Kai & Audry and also takes place before the events of Missed Connections which is the first book in the series.

after reading Missed Connections, i have been so excited to be able to learn more about every character specifically Audry & Kai. i enjoyed their relationship and their dynamic a lot. i do think that something just did not click with me so i did not enjoy this book as much as i thought i was going to but i still enjoyed how fast paced this was and was also a very quick and fun read even though at times it did confuse me on where the story was going but would still highly recommend to anyone looking for a mafia romance!

i am really excited to see where the next books go and to be able to read Carsons & Logans stories in the next two books!

This starts off with Audry hooking up with a man in the bathroom and then Kai making a move on the women who was the date of the man who was hooking up with Audry (she did not know). Then Audry meets Kai when he hits on her at bar and she declines and leaves where she is followed and SA outside in the alley where Kai rescues her. The start of the book right off the rip!! I just want to say that “your mom” ( if you know you know 👀 lol) deserved to get taught a lesson just saying…

🌶️🌶️

“Everything was better alone..” made me a little sad! I love that we get to work through some of that internal conflicts that she’s come to blows with.

I honestly didn’t know if I would like Aubrey at first.. I definitely don’t think she fully appreciated Kai.

Loved loved loved the book!!

“My heart skipped a beat as Kai's name stretched across my screen.” Oh honey my heart would’ve done the same !!!

Last thought, I honestly cannot wait for book three!! The series just keeps getting better and better!!! Ahhhhhh!

This author is a new to me author. The Devil You Don't Know is book 2 in the Red Widow Crew series and is Kai and Audry's story. These two have their fair share of things to deal with so I strongly suggest checking the trigger warnings before you start their story. The Devil You Don't Know is an intense, emotional, gritty story that pulls you in from early on and holds you in place until the end. It's full of drama, intrigue, mystery and chaos with characters that'll take hold of you from the beginning. I completely enjoyed every second of their journey.

I found A.D. last year with her book Missed Connections and was instantly hooked to her writing and the Red Widow Crew. I loved the way she told Kai and Audry's story. I love that even in the dark parts, she wasn't afraid to say what was happening. Made the book much more impactful emotionally. I loved the history of the world in this because it's going to set up the next story amazingly. Hands down one of my favorite reads this year. Who doesn't love a dark mafia romance with touch her and die vibes!!!

This is my second book by this author, and I definitely liked this book more than book one! The characters and their backstories, just felt more fleshed out. They were much easier to relate to. The pace of the story was perfect. Things didn’t drag, nor were things kind of glossed over.

All in all, a pretty easy/solid read. Definitely check the Trigger Warnings with this one though! There was a scene that may be difficult for some individuals to read.

Thank you again, for letting my ARC another book of yours!

This is a fantastic book! It was a quick read because I couldn't put it down! It takes off right at the beginning. There is spice, a great plot, and a secret society that Audrey belongs to but knows nothing about. She accidentally finds out some things that she shouldn't have, which doesn't turn out well.
Kai runs into Audrey as something awful is happening. He helps Audrey out, and they brace themselves for the fallout, and together, they try to make it through the web of lies they fall into.
Great book! Can't wait until the next one!

Ugh loved this one just as much as the first one!!! Spoiler this book does piece a lot of pieces that you read in the first book. Which I loved. Because I sure was confused and wanting to know what happened to Audrey in the first book and this book explains it all perfectly. Honest truth now it makes sense why she acted like she did in the first book!

I loved this book just as much as the first. It's a different type, smut still but not as crazy. Still loved it! Read this series there two more coming out and I can't wait!!

I loved this book, the characters were so likeable and a little bit fun.
But the story is serious, the FMC is in danger and the MMC is there to support her. Their relationship develops then comes the news, that she can't really be his, but they are determined and she is determined to move away from her pre=planned life. The character development is good as is the friendships of the MMC as well as their acceptance of the FMC along with their willingness to help and support her.
The writing is good, the story engaging, the MC's likable and I am looking forward to the next one!
