I think the saddest thing about this series is wondering if the human race is worth saving.

This episode seems to be the last of the Peeling story and it's well-written but really, unsurprising in regard to human behaviour.

Thought-provoking and worth a look.

“We all need to just chill the fuck out,” said David.
“Chill out?” said Colin.  “Something abducted two of our members like something out of Close Encounters.  We should all be in a very un-chilled out mood.  In fact we should all be in quite a flap about things."

"The Lights" closes out the last of "The Peeling", an end-of-world scenario where the world's population is devastated by a flesh-destroying disease. Again, no zombies here, but author Wright throws a monkey wrench into the story when the lights descend from the sky. A very interesting twist, and unexpected.

As you may have noticed from previous reviews, I really like The Peeling series. In fact, I own a signed copy of The Peeling Trilogy and Iain Rob Wright is amongst my favourite authors.

So, this is a bit awkward! I didn’t like this book.. I didn’t feel it added to the story in any way. For me, The Peeling will always be a four book story (Patient Zero and Books 1 to 3) I’m unsure why this new direction was taken or whether it was planned out all along but I didn’t really like it

All of the books have been directed at a skin peeling disease and they’ve all been pretty gritty for short stories. This one is definitely the weakest of the series. The characters don’t feel as deep and the story doesn’t seem necessary. I understand that the series needed an ending but I don’t think this was the way to do it.

That’s not to say nobody will like it, by all means, buy the book and give it a go. It’s a nice short read and if you’ve invested in the rest of the books it’s worth finishing them off, but for me personally the series didn’t need this book.

At the end of the last story, Sargent Parker saw green lights in the sky. As this story begins, a group of twenty survivors hiding out at a hotel starts to see the same green lights every night. A woman named Gretchen is the leader of this group. She doesn't know what the lights are or how to defend her group if they turn out to be dangerous.

Logan is one of the men in the group. He says he used to be a physicist and is also drunk all the time. He tells Gretchen the lights are aliens. He thinks the aliens created the virus to wipe out humanity so they could take over the planet. Gretchen doesn't know whether to believe him or not, but they try to reinforce their defenses just in case.

One night there is a loud boom that wakes everyone up. One of the flashing light ships landed. They go to investigate and...

This was a good, suspenseful part of the story. Just when the survivors thought they had made it out alive, this new threat appears. Logan has a great theory about what is happening, but can he be believed? I guess we'll find out in the next, last story.

Not Quite The Ending I Had Hoped For

I really enjoyed the 1st 3 books of this series & did enjoy this one, the 4th, but it just seemed a completely unsatisfactory conclusion to an otherwise good series of short stories. Not a great ending to the series unfortunately.

What a cool ending. There was an explanation and an unimaginable closing that left me satisfied. :). It was great and worthy of all five stars.
