Healing For My Soul

Rate this book
Jakari protector and provider…

He takes on those roles when his father gets incarcerated for hideous crimes that are still bothering him ten years later. Jakari is so busy taking care of those he loves he forgot that he needed care too. Anger, guilt, and hurt have guided his life’s trajectory, and he doesn’t know any other way to be. So when he has to pick up his cousins from school and runs into librarian, Yendi Odom, he doesn’t know how to handle her. His attempts to get what he wants, like he does with other women, prove to leave him unsatisfied. For the first time in over ten years, he wants more. He wants a relationship with her, but he realizes that isn’t something he’s mentally or emotionally ready for.

Yendi nurturer and caregiver…

She doesn’t know those roles fit her until she meets Jakari Bolton. Running from drama with her family, she ends up in a small town working as the librarian at the high school. Her decision to move where she doesn’t have any familial ties or friends, while grieving the loss of her father, proves to be harder than she thought it would be. However, when she meets Jakari through two of her students, she knows he’s the one that will change her life. Almost love at first sight, Yendi commits to Jakari and to helping him through his issues without reciprocity. That decision has left her confused, but she’s sure about the way he has swept her off her feet.

Jakari and explosive, passionate, and emotion-filled…

The emotions between the two are strong from the very beginning and neither of them know how to explain it. Both dealing with heavy issues, they lean on one another for healing and solace. Jakari has a hard time with that though, because he believes Yendi deserves better. She deserves a man that is ready to love her through anything. Yendi believes he deserves her and more importantly, that she deserves him and everything he has to offer.

The push and pull gets overwhelming, despite Yendi’s devotion. She begins to question her decisions and doubts that a relationship with Jakari is feasible. Can Jakari come to grips with his issues in time to claim Yendi’s love for him? Or will he allow anger, hurt, and guilt to continue to consume him, leaving no room for the love his soul needs?

Starting with poetry, writing has always been a constant in Monica's life. The interest began in her teenage years, being in love for the first time. Her love for writing has only progressed. Song lyrics and poetry led to short stories, then one day in her down time, a short story became a 56k word novel. It has been non-stop since then. Being a wife and mother, has only added to the joys of Monica's life. Attaining a BS in Sociology, helping her better understand people and their behaviors, has only helped her become a better writer, understanding characters and their complex personalities. Romance of all types has been her passion, and she plans to continue honing her skills in that genre.

Lawd Miss Monica! You did not have to do me and my emotions like that! Whew.... My heart went out to Jakari, as he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. Being strong for those around him, did not allow him the space to recognize, process, and address his own feelings. All he knew for sure, was that he hated Avery and wanted nothing to do with him! Who could blame him?

Yendi, running from her own family ish, found solace in the small country town. However, she knew she wanted Jakari at first glance. There was something about him that called out to her, even in his brokenness. She was truly an angel, to want to deal with all the issues that came with this man, not knowing anything about him. He tried to let her down easy, as he knew he wasn't ready, but she pushed, and well.......

I really enjoyed how we were able to catch up, and get glimpses of the Henderson clan, without it taking away from Jakari's story. Was glad to see Nesha doing well and thriving with Lennox. Uncle Mayor was still up to his wild shenanigans, and loved that Jasper got his time to shine. Now, Jessica girl.... you bout to mess up yo good thang holding on to the past. Is she regretting her decision? She says no, but I'm not so sure.

I could not believe Avery bombarding Jakari like he did! If he would have gotten f'd up, it would have served him right! Ughhh.... 🤬 Jakari knew then and there he needed to do the work to save himself from further destruction that his anger was causing. I hated how things went down with Yendi; however, I could understand that Jakari needed time to get himself together. The growth he displayed in that short period of time while in therapy was amazing. I felt so happy for him as the shackles of his trauma began to fall away. Yendi, I know you love the man, but damn, you ain't make him work for you at all after that ish? Angel indeed. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Looking forward to Nate's story, as he needs to release that hold that Jessica has on him. He deserves to find someone to be love him fully, and properly. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

2.5 Stars…

This was a little hard to rate because I thought the emotional complexity of what Jakari and Yendi were facing in their relationship with their father and mother respectively in the plot was dealt with really well and took us on a journey. The main issue I had with this was the substance of Jakari and Yendi’s actual relationship- which to me didn’t really exist in the absence of sex. From the beginning, Jakari is very clear about where his mental health is and rather than hearing him and really listening, Yendi pushes to get deep into a relationship with him with huge declarations for someone who is clearly not ready. Even Yendi herself isn’t ready as her goal really seems to move her yearning for family to Jakari’s family. Which would be fine if either of them had the space or support outside of their sexual relationship to be there for each other and talk to their issues. The part that bothers me the most is that when things inevitably crash and burn as any reader could see they would, Yendi is surprised and catches feelings, which to me minimized the magnitude of the big issues that Jakari had to reconcile with his pedophole father and that she herself has to reconcile with her manipulative and neglectful mother.

It’s not so much that I didn’t like this story and the emotions in it, I just didn’t think the build of the relationship between Jakari and Yendi made sense and I think there was a missed opportunity to develop their relationship to actually be supportive in light of what they were both facing. It read to me as desperate and not really listening or reading the room and made the instalove feel even more forced and out of nowhere, ignoring stated needs for space and support to deal with deeper issues. This element of their relationship building was super jarring and made their relationship hard to believe even though I thought other elements of the book were well done.

As for the next book, I have to admit I’m wayyyyy over the Jess-Brixton-Nate love triangle (have been over it since Jess’ book where she picked Brixton over Nate)- I don’t particularly care about Jess, I think she’s messy. And frankly I’m ambivalent about Nate, with him not respecting himself and moving on. I WISH Rylan and Angel were next…. But oh welll…. I’m still invested in Hendersonville and all the drama in Big City Nome so plan to pick up the next book either way.

The author mentioned the books that tied into the story, and I cannot say whether I missed any details even though I did not read one of the books mentioned. A few times I was confused by the timeline of events surrounding his father, ages, and the victims. I had a slight disconnection with this storyline and the massive cast. I do not usually stay long with a series. I will dip in and out as the story calls me to imbibe. Five is usually my max. See what you think.

Title: Healing For My Soul
Author: Monica Walters
Series: The Henderson Family Saga #18

What to expect:
*Cowboy-ish romance
*Insta lust/love
*Reformed playboy

Pros:
I love a story featuring a female librarian! Reformed playboys aren’t always my favorite, but this MMC goes all in with the FMC and falls hard. Love seeing MMC’s getting counseling when they know that they need help!

Cons:
Not required to read the series in order, but there are a lot of crossover characters included in this story. I have not read any of the other books in the series and did not feel lost in the story.

Safety:
No OW/OM drama, does have a third act breakup. They are separated for about a month, neither are with other people during the break. There are several parts of the book that talk about a side character that sexually abuses family members, no abuse takes place on page.

Format: Libby audiobook
Genre: Contemporary fiction, Romance
Overall score:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice level:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Characters: Yendi (FMC) & Jakari (MMC)

🙌👌⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I'm always at a loss for words when I read about the Henderson family. So many great people so many great stories so much emotion and passion. This 1 was no different. The chemistry between jakari and Yendi Was amazing amazing amazing And 💦💥explosive from the beginning. They were made for each other. Even though there was a little struggle to get there. It's so awesome to see the Henderson girls growing up. It's always good to get a few 😂 from uncle mayor.. Uncle Jasper staying hi is hilarious but the advice is awesome. I love ❤ the way she has woven the Berottes into the Henderson's saga. This book was a definitely 5 star⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ great job although Jess and Nate😡 got on my last nerve. Hashtag team Brixton.😂😂

Healing Together!

Mrs. Walters and these Hendersons. I can always depend on the Hendersons to leave a lasting impression on me. There was something about this book that just hit my heartstrings at a different angle. As I was reading, I paused and thought this seemed to be real and personal. After reading the author's note at the end, I was correct. Everyone processes traumatic events differently. Poor Jakari was going through the storm. He was using an unethical outlet, but that was how he cope with his father's low moral actions. Yendi wasn't exactly doing any better with her father's passing and how her mother and siblings were treating her. In essence, they needed each other to aid in the healing process. Once Jakari realized the importance of having Yendi in his life, he finally sought the therapy to turn the curve on his trauma. It was then that Jakari and Yendi officially became a couple. So Ashanni and Maui did a magnificent job in matchmaking their teacher and cousin. Jakari was 100% in and wanted to make sure he locked Yendi down. I am anticipating the next installment, I feel their love is going to go to the next level.

Mrs. Walters, these Hendersons have been in our lives for so long now. I don't think we will ever get tired of them. Keep the stories coming because they are all unique. Of course, there is always the staple like Uncle Major Storm that is always at catastrophic levels, but he is the most entertaining Henderson of them all. He keeps the new love stories rolling. Folks, you all know what to do. Grab your copy so you can too indulge in Jakari and Yendi's story.

Oooo weeee Mrs. Monica Walters come on up here and get your flowers, Queen! This book was so beautiful, raw, and gut-wrenching. You left your entire soul on these pages. You gave Jakari his story at the right time and with the right woman.
Having read the previous books I was well aware of what transpired but having Jakari’s POV broke my heart all over again. He definitely needed a woman who could weather the storm because my man was going through it. Yendi has made her way to my top five females from this author's catalog. Her patience alone was commendable but adding her caring, understanding, and accepting nature made her even better. She was also in need of healing and her grief was just as important as Jakari's issues however I didn't feel she got the same support but her pouring into Jakari seemed to help her and made for a phenomenal read so obviously she was getting what she needed.
This book has me drained in the best way possible! Jakari is now in the third spot on my roster (after Ali and Shy of course) because the way he was giving all he had in their sex scenes 😫🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾. Monica Walters made ‘slutting you out respectfully’ a whole vibe and me and Yendi thank you😏. I’m hoping plans stay the same and Nate finds his woman next because I need him to move on… for real!

I was on the fence with this book. Now mind you, I’m new to the Henderson family and although I hate starting in the middle of a series, this one came available in my library and I couldn’t pass it up. Jakari and Yendi are a massive complexity of unresolved childhood trauma (that’s very present in their adulthood) and toxic parents. Yendi kind of made me mad cause I just felt like she was giving too desperate in her desire to be with Jakari, who did not hide the fact that he was mentally and emotionally unavailable. And high key, Jakobi was selfish and I’m glad he came to realize just how much. I feel like their relationship lacked any real substance because it revolved around lots of sex. I would’ve love to see them evolve more together.

This book gave all the feels! It was definitely an emotional rollercoaster for sure. I felt like Yendi sold herself way short by forcing the issue of the relationship and catching feelings. Clearly neither of them were ready, but they also literally fell in love overnight. It was a bit weird and I’m not sure if I’m giving more grace because in the end they were better for each other or because of the author’s note and the pain she wrote through. Either way, I hope MW finds peace in her situation and the memories she shared with her dad. I’m still rocking with you!

Conflicted…Emotional Scars

When am I not conflicted reading a Ms. Walters book 🤭 …particularly with these 🤬 eleven million Henderson’s from “Big City Nome” 🤣⁉️Nevertheless, “Healing For My Soul (The Henderson Family Saga - Book 18)” was great read but an emotional turbulent journey for me. Poor Yendi, I can’t empathize with her torment, heartbreak, insecurities and internal battle (s) over her own family personal struggles and conversely loving a man that’s incapable of emotionally reciprocating stability and or affection 😮‍💨❗️Not to mention Jakari created another emotional scar for Yendi, abandonment again❗️…That shiggy is frustrating & exhausting ‼️Unfortunately though, Yendi’s your mental health & welfare is just as important for you & to your siblings (cause ya mama ain’t 🤬❗️🤷🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️…yeah I said it 2x!) as Jakari is to his family. However, like Jakari, most men justify and filter everything through their external member. Sex, emotions, intimacy & love are all mutual exclusive (male species). Internalized traumatic experiences & maintaining the shame associated with each traumatic event aren’t healthy for the individual nor the longevity of a romantic relationship! I’m just not confident about this couple (Yendi & Jakari) ⚖️🥴🫣‼️

JAKARI & YENDI ❤️

My favorite family is back, and now it's time for Jakari to find his mate. I loved this story because you have two people who are dealing with loss and trying to move forward through the pain. Jakari was holding in so much anger for Avery that it consumed his life, hindering him from finding someone to have a relationship with. I was happy that he finally chose to seek counseling and set his boundaries with Avery. Although Yendi was going through her own issues with her mother, she never gave up on Jakari. I was happy that she did get the opportunity to express how she felt regarding her father's passing and the things that took place. I wish she would've had the chance to also seek counseling. There is no denying that the Hendersons are going to rally behind you no matter what, and their acceptance of Yendi proved just that. Yendi and Jakari's story was beautiful not just from the physical and sexual attraction but the real emotion they both showed. You felt that it was not the end for them. It took some time, but im glad they got it right and with a blessing on the way. I also loved the cameos of characters from past reads.

Healing indeed

Another good one. Initially, I was a bit put off by how willing Yendi was to accept a fraction of Jakari; especially, after he expressed not being fully ready to pursue a real relationship. It led them on a cycle of crashing and burning when the root of his issues started to surface because his trauma was looking him in the face each time he saw his family. On the flip side, while I felt like she was what he needed, I think she could have benefited from counseling as well because she had her own issues. I’m just glad it worked out though.

The subplots were very interesting. I was side-eying Nate and Jess, but Rylan and Angel are getting a bombastic side-eye. The latter has too many factors that I’m on the fence about like their ages, difference in experience level, and how the family is connected. I’ll be interested in how that comes together because I’m not feeling it at this moment, but Monica is the best at weaving a story together so I’m sure I’ll swoon soon enough.

Jakari & Yendi - 😍✨🫶🏾

Anytime that I can read about Storm I am all for it.

I really enjoyed Jakari’s book. It was really good to see his point of view of everything that was going on. He help onto a lot of anger and guilt for sure I am glad that he deiced to get help because he was better than all of that. Yendi that dear soul tie is real because I would have told Jakari to kick rocks good 🍆 or not 🤣.

Now that Jess and Nate situation I am ready to see it die. I am looking at both of them like WTH are you doing 🤦🏾‍♀️. I’m over her and Nate for real, just let go and move on. I feel Jess is selfish to lead something on that you don’t want unless you still wanted it. I am looking forward to Rylan and Angel’s story for sure.

I cannot get enough of the Henderson Family for sure, thank you Monica for brining your work to us for sure!!!

What a journey

I really enjoyed Healing My Soul. It felt a bit heavier than other books by Monica, but the heart and soul that Monica injects into each book she writes is all there . Jakari and Yendi both struggle with trying to deal with betrayal from family members. Yendi moves far away from her family to pick up the pieces of her life. Jakari swears off love. Jakari and Yendi’s attraction causes both of them to experience feelings they haven’t felt before . Yendi is all in, Jakari fights his feeling and his heart so much you wonder if he deserves Yendi’s unwavering love. I love the Henderson Family! Every book is better than the next . Jakari and Yendi’s love story really hits you emotionally on so many levels ! Excellent storytelling!!

After The Hurt, The Heart Can Heal

Monica, another great read. I still say the Henderson Clan is my favorite. As well as all the other outside friends. Jakari and Yendi my lord this was a very intense read. Seeing them both go through some very uncomfortable situations that neither one could handle at first. I felt so much emotion with Yendi. The one thing I loved about Yendi is she was open to explore.
When I tell you those Henderson's protect their own with everything in them. I was so glad Jakari finally gave himself a chance to forgive himself for things out of his control. His fear kept him at bay, his love wanted him to open up. As always having true friendship and family love can change things in a minute. I love this read🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

SUPERB❣️

WOW! ✨
What an AMAZING read! 💖
What made it amazing to me is the reminders that we as a people need to seek help for our mental health concerns as well.
In the black community seeking therapy or counseling was once considered taboo. Sadly some of us were raised with the notion that we are too strong of a people to need it.
Thank you Author Monica Walters for writing in the therapy sessions in your story. We are deserving of peace of mind too.

This story also touched on some heavy topics that were PERFECTLY written. The scenes were SO realistic that I forgot that I was actually reading them and not living the experience for myself. Now that's talent! 💪🏾

The love between Jakari & Yendi was so hot & sexy! 🔥😜
Very well done❣️

Healing for my soul

I enjoyed this book and getting more from the Henderson’s. Both Yendi and Jakari were relatable characters and they both needed each other to heal and get past the hurt of their parents’ actions. I was glad the Jakari finally got the help he needed and allowed Yendi to love him completely and allowed himself to do the same for her. There were some funny moments as always especially with Mayor Storm and Jasper and it was great to see more of Jakari’s personality and how funny he was and how much like his uncles he was as well. I’m definitely looking forward to getting more from this family and to seeing who takes Nate’s attention from Jess. This was a great read that I would recommend, just like the rest of the series.

Healing from trauma

Both Jakari and Yendi had a lot of emotional baggage to deal with. Jakari found it hard to heal from the past trauma of his father raping a few of his family members. It made it worst when he unintentionally almost did the same thing with an underaged girl he met in a club. When he found out her age he'd sworn off being in a relationship with anyone until he met Yendi. He wasn't even trying to fall for her but she had an emotional pull on his heart.
Yendi was dealing with past trauma dealing with her father's death that she felt her mother was somehow responsible for.
They tried to help each other but Jakari's trauma caused him to lash out and almost lose her. With the help of counseling he got better and saved his relationship

Can't go wrong on reading one of Mo's books!! Jakari is all grown and sexy with it! Yendi had no option but to fall right in love with him. A girl's first love is her Daddy. I lost my Dad 9 years ago, and I still grieve his death. His death took a toll on my Mom, but we got closer as mother and daughter. Sadly, I lost her on November 15, 2022. What does not kill you makes you stronger!! I love these two together. Each had a parental issue and healed each other. Wow, that's love! Love the intro of the Berottes series fam! Storm and Jasper had me laughing as well. It was good reading about he posse from Big City Nome! Gwaan do yuh ting Mo! Bless up!

Jakari & Yendi

Yendi had her work cut out for her w/ Jakari. She hung in there longer than most of us because really... he would have lost his good thing had he not pulled his head out his tail, gotten help and gotten his girl back.

So her mom was really a villain? That was crazy.

There was a-lot going on in the background and a few potential love matches 😍.

Nate's love match has to be epic to break that soul-tie he has with Jess because that storyline is messy!

Noah (🙄🙄) comparing that one-sided sh!t-show he had with Sonya to Nate & Jess, I just can't with him 🤦🏾‍♀️.

Rylan "Uncle Ry Ry.” and Angel?Yes, please! She sounds like fun!

Jakari wanted to love but he felt he was like his dad cause he looks like his twin but his little cousins had something up their sleeves getting him together with the librarian of their school. Yendi seen him and it was damn the chemistry was off the charts . Jakari couldn't face the feeling he was having and tried to fight it but when he saw his father at the basketball game with the young girl that tried to play him together it messed him up but Yendi was in love and wanted to help him but he had to figure it out and get the help so he love Yendi like she deserved.

Loved It

Monica, I know that this was a bit difficult for you to finish, due to your loss. You did your thang with this storyline, I'm hopeful that this story provided you with cathartic for you. As adult children, we can't be responsible for our parents, it's okay to love those that we love from a distance for our peace! Jakari and Yendi truly needed one another to be one another's peace after suffering losses, sometimes losses don't equal death. A loss can be a friendship, sisterhood, betrayal of those that you trust. I love seeing the Henderson's, especially Mayor Storm!

Loved Yendi and Jakari

Even though Jakari tried to deny his pull towards Yendi it was inevitable! They both harbored past trauma but they were both in need if love to heal! I loved how he loved her and how she refused to give up on him no matter what! Tyrese messed with the wrong family and paid the ultimate price! Loved how Grandpa Henderson is starting to heal from his grief! I hate how gone Nate is for Jess but I really hope he finds love! Angel and Rylan, hmmmmm.... This was a great read it dealt with depression, isolation and grief but also healing and restoration along with new beginnings! The Henderson family us really growing! Great read Monica!

I’m a little over this series and didn’t particularly care for these characters but it was nice being back in big city Nome, and the interactions with the Hendersons. Not a fan of Jakari or Yendi, and their relationship didn’t have much substance (especially compared to some of the others). I really hated how he consistently left Yendi in situations where his father called or appeared. I do not care for Avery or more or that storyline so I’m sure that influenced my “eh” rating of this book.
I’m also sooooo sick of Nate being whiny about Jessica and I know his book is next but imma need a break again

Jakari and Yendi, Healing and Forgiveness

This book was filled with so emotions and realistic topics that were covered and the reactions were so relatable!!!…
Jasper is definitely one of favorite characters in this series and all the advice he has given is so genuine!!!…
I love that Yendi cares for Jakari the way she did and I know it took a lot, even with her dealing with the heartbreak of losing her father!!!…
To lose family, gain a family and then on the verge of losing that family can be a lot!!!…
Nate has been setting himself up for so much heartbreak with Jessica!!!…I truly hope a woman comes along to show him that he deserves to be loved and not a consolation prize that is sitting in the background watching the person you want love and be loved on by another!!!…

Audiobook 🎧

Leon Nixon as a narrator was good but I was not the biggest fan of Taryn for our FMC.

Honestly the story about this relationship was kind of depressing. Our FMC Yendi ran behind Jakari for too long, dignity be damned. I found myself yelling “stand up!” multiple times as I continued to listen. The FMC & MMC both dealt with familial trauma but having Yendi falling into a deep depression and drinking heavily then just coming out of it once they made up was a choice.

Add in the fact that we had a make-up to break-up with a very short lived relationship; their rekindling within the last 40 minutes, I was not feeling it at all.

Jakari and Yendi

This book had me in my feelings from the beginning to end their journey. I glad to see Ali and the gang pop up in this book. I am proud of Jakari for doing the work on himself, but understand that his soulmate was Yendi no matter how hard he tried to resist. The title really does fits the story and we can see nobody mess with Henderson’s family without meeting their maker. Thanks to Ms. Walters for always giving us a good drama and romance story to read every time! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

another hit lit

Another Henderson bites the dust! I loved it! I need a black cowboy with that Henderson swag and strength lol. Black men getting therapy is a turn on for me. I want to see Nate get his happily ever after too. I’m still not 100% sold on her and Brix. Mr. Mayor, Storm will forever be one of my favorite Henderson characters because he has a few screws loose. Yendi was very relatable and the grief following the loss of a parent can be debilitating. So, I truly felt for her. Again, I loved, now what’s next?

I love the Henderson family ♥️

Once again, another #1, I'm sure. My heart just bled for Jakari. I can't even imagine how hurt he was by what Avery's has done to his family. Yendi, I know how bad it is for her. The loss of a parent is devastating. But there's more to the story with her mother, and I'm dying to know exactly what it is. Once again, it's a wonderful story beautifully written. This is one of my favorite families. I'm happy for Jakari and Yendi. As always, it was my absolute pleasure reading your book 🥰.

Wow

So normally I just leave a rating and very rarely leave a worded review but when I tell you this book had me in my feels!!! Whew from the beginning to the end and I love the collaboration of characters from the other series!! This book had me doing a self reflection of my own life and my expectations in this dating world and as a BBW how to demand what I want and take nothing less. Thank you Monica for your transparency and touching the real issues. On another note I may be moving to Texas because baby listen they like them BBWs out there lol!!!

Healing For My Soul ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved Jakari and Yendi story. The instant connection between them was beautiful. They connected Spiritually and had some issues in common, her with her mother and Jakari with his father. As always Storm was hilarious he is still my favorite. I love the way the Hendersons embraced Yendi and became her family. I’m happy Nate story is next, he needs to move on from Jess and he deserves happiness too. All in all this was a great story as always Monica did not disappoint.
