The guy put the red flag up—and the irony was not lost on Harry at all.
Asher Garin holding a Mac 50 was the biggest red flag known to man. — Harry
Warnings: Guns. A deep near unhealthy love of a specific gun.
This is a perfect piece of fanservice, well to a degree. You need to be a fan or at least have read and remember both The Kite and Tallowwood to read this and properly enjoy this. If you don't understand the importance of Kookaburras or know what Ash's baby is then you probably should read/reread the original works first. I love the cover of this though. The scope and target are prime The Kite cover detailing, even if the tree doesn't quite suit the climate.
Asher and Harry are now going by the names of Joshua and Michael Hill, Joshua is a French expat as a way to explain that mysterious accent. I struggled to stop laughing at Asher in this. He shone so brightly. Watching him light up with his baby like a kid on Christmas is one of the funniest things I've read in while. He is a show off with her and it makes the small minded gun loving men of Tallowwood shut up. Harry is sweet af in his teasing and do anything for Asher attitude. Yunho does make an appearance it made me happy, he is so important to Asher.
Then we have Jacob and August. I feel they take a back seat. August is very suspicious of Michael Hill, only amplified once he meets Joshua and Michael on their rural property. Michael makes the hair on the back of his neck stand up. Joshua is less sus until the kookaburras come into play. I like their reaction to the two very dangerous men. It is easy to become complacent as readers as to how intimidating if not downright scary mcs of novels are to outsiders. Some things cannot be hidden by an immaculately designed cover story.
What I feel like this might be doing is setting up the upcoming sequel to The Kite, announced as a publication around September 2024 (as per N.R.'s New Years email). Am I complaining? Absolutely not. I love Harry, Asher and The Kite, I'm so pleased about spending more time with them. But I do feel like it was never established that The Kite and Tallowwood were set in the same verse before this was announced.
“Ah, Harry. I thought I called Asher.”
“You did. He’s . . . indisposed.” Yunho laughed. “I hope he’s thoroughly so.”
Asher laughed. “You know him so well,” he said loud enough for Yunho to hear. — Yunho, Harry and Asher
