This book will take you on a journey to awaken a spiritual relationship with the seal, familiarizing you with the seal's anima as well as its history with the Gaelic ancestors of the British Isles. The Clan of the Seal on North Uist, and the traditional oral storytellers, were the transmitters and custodians of folklore, who told tales about the kindly selchie and revered seals as sacred, akin to their own family. The gentle seal will help reclaim what is lost within as we remember our Celtic heritage and identity in this fragile world. Seal lore teaches valuable lessons in integrity and kindness, and ignites our imagination, leading us to the seal's inner landscape of presence and peace - inevitably towards our own inner peace. This is the magic of the seal; not lost, but found.
‘The Magic of the Seal’ will take you on a magical underwater adventure, where you will journey with Seal and learn to see the world through their eyes. On this journey they will inspire you to reclaim your own freedom through reminding you both the vast potentiality of the ocean of Self, and of the certainty and hope that like waves, all that at some point seems overwhelming or difficult, will pass. Melanie shares many ways and tales that demonstrate the Seal’s powerful message that transformation and understanding is always possible, even when you feel completely lost at sea. The book is a good mix of theory and practice, combining folklore and mythology with practical ways a modern person can connect to seals as part of their spiritual practice. You will learn ways to honour the spirit of Seal and build a relationship with these creatures that will both nurture and fulfil you, mind, body and soul. However, Melanie, importantly, also signposts ways in which you can in turn be of service to the seal population on this planet and she shows there is a way for you to make a difference and a contribution to the well-being of the oceans. Melanie writes in a gentle and compassionate way that will encourage you to find your own peace and solace in the remembrance of the sacredness of this planet and its aquatic creatures. Seal spirit flows strongly through the words of this book, bringing a message of peace, harmony, collaboration and communion which asks you to lean into the strength of their compassion and wisdom. Seal will encourage you to trust your place as part of nature and in inviting you to swim with them, they offer themselves as guide, ally and inspiration for creating a more nourishing world for us all.
This was a great introduction to seal/selkie lore and I particularly enjoyed the connection with Scottish and Norwegian myth and lore because of my own ancestry on my father's side. I felt like I learned something new about my own heritage. I have an interest in animism and stories of shapeshifting entities and in particular I'm very fond of mermaids and selkie lore so this book brought multiple facts and old stories from a variety of sources together creating a well rounded, engaging read that inspired me to learn even more and I kept saying to myself (whilst hihglighting sentences of interest) "Oh I didn't know that! Must research deeper into this!"
The personal story of Melanie encountering and resucing a seal pup was also very sweet and charming, bridging the connection between author, seals and reader even more. As someone who advocates for ocean conservation (I donate to help mantarays and coral reefs yearly) I also appreciated the extra messages about protecting and caring for our oceans and the creatures in it. The book cover is eye-catching and enchanting too!
This was a great introduction to seals, selchies/selkies, the lore, the magic, and the beliefs surrounding them. It's well organized, and while much of it is spent on the lore, I enjoyed seeing the photos, and reading about Elizabeth, a seal close to the author's heart. There's a lot of good information packed into these chapters, and although I was aware of some of the lore, I learned quite a bit more. There's such a rich history surrounding seals I wasn't aware of, especially in North America (Canada specifically). I can't say I've ever worked with seals in a magical sense, but I found the second part of the book fascinating. It covers not only working with seals in a magical sense, but conveys the importance of protecting seals and the environment. Highly recommend for beginners who are curious, before they're ready to deep dive into everything. Once you're ready to dive deeper, the bibliography at the back is the perfect resource for furthering your own research.
I wish I had better things to say about this book - after about 20% I just skimmed through the rest. I so wanted a book on this topic but I feel like there’s just not enough info for a full book. It felt like a lot of talking (writing) without any real takeaways for me. It felt like it lacked any real structure. It felt like when you’re writing an essay for school and you just kind of keep introducing new topics back to back with no real thought to it. I appreciate what the author set out to do, maybe it will be a better fit for others.
I feel very connected to Seal and Selchie stories and energy, so I was excited to read The Magic of the Seal by Melanie Godfrey. The book definitely did not disappoint. It is clear that the topic is close to the author's heart as well because she did such a thorough job covering the myths and stories. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about these wonderful animals and the touching stories passed down through time about them.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC of this book.
