Hi, I love writing mysteries and started with a paranormal series. In the last couple of years I have been writing 1920s mysteries. I love the atmosphere of the time, that has been depicted on our screens and in fiction. Of the fashion, the cars, the parties following the war which gave everyone that 'live for the day' attitude.

I set my books in Somerset close to where I live, although the towns and villages are fictional they are based on real places local to me. They have to be fictional as I change them to fit the story. I do use the real cities though, such as Bristol and Bath Spa. They are places I visit often and it's great to be able to spend time researching what the cities were like 100 years ago.

I hope you enjoy reading my books.

Lady Ellen, along with her companion, Lottie, and faithful dog, Prince, travels to Moor House where Captain Hamilton is contracted to provide security for a mysterious item that is for auction. The invite was for a garden party, but when they arrive, it seems the rather secretive widower who owns the place is more interested in gaining a rich wife than he is in hosting a party. His grown up children do not impress, nor does the strange lord who has apparently arrived a week too early for the auction viewing.
When an unexpected storm cuts Moor House off from the village, they all reluctantly settle in to await the clearance of the bridge that is the only vehicular access to the property. Then the artifact goes missing, and a guard is stabbed, and Lady Ellen is asked to delve discretely into the mystery. Her investigations are frustrating and perplexing, and she is anxious to leave the place as soon as possible.
Therein, for me, lay one of the less than enjoyable aspects of this story. Previous novels have been charming and engaging, with wonderful evocation of the period. The latter is still there, but I found Ellen’s dislike of her situation rubbing off on me. I also found her annoying for the first time. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot to like in the characters, the setting, and the story, but for a woman who considers herself modern, with a progressive attitude, her reluctance to consider Hamilton as a potential suitor flies in the face of how she considers herself. She married beneath herself before, and often recalls this, so what is so very different this time? She is positively encouraging a relationship between the son of a duke, and Lottie, a girl from a poor family, and yet thinks it is too far a reach to allow herself to fall for an educated war veteran.
These aspects made me less enthralled with this volume than the previous two, yet the mystery is nicely complex, and wrapped up in a satisfying manner. I get that the tension over another woman lusting after Hamilton is a great plot driver, but to me it just felt a little forced.
I will continue with this series, I just hope that the next situation will be less disagreeable for Ellen, and hence for me!

Five reasons I'm giving Five Stars to A Killer at the Castle by Kelly Mason:

The Time and Place - We are in rural England in the years following the Great War. Lady Ellen Ashcombe has done more than her fair share for the war effort, but now it it time to turn Ashcombe Hall back into a residence and Lady Ellen must leave for three months while the work is being done.

The Plot - Finding refuge in a lovely hotel on a small resort town near Bristol, Lady Ellen treats herself and her friends to a visit to a nearby castle. Tragedy, of course, strikes as a man plummets to his death and Lady Ellen must once again investigate.

The Protagonist - Lady Ellen is visiting a dear friend when she is invited to a garden party at a house where her dear friend captain Hamilton. A house-party, a secret silent auctions, a stabbing, intrigues galore, what's not to like?

The Posse - Lady Ellen has a small group of friends to help her with her sleuthing - There is the loyal Lottie, the dashing captain Hamilton, and a very dear dog. They all work together to solve a fun mystery and make this a charming, light as air and very enjoyable read.

The Cliffhanger - This is the third book in the series and the author not only adds a fun new character but ends the book with a puzzle that will no doubt unfold in book four. I can't wait!

You definitely won't want to miss out on Lady Ellen's latest adventure. Lady Ellen and Lottie along with Cpt. Hamilton are once more put on the spot to figure out who done it after attending a private residence and a priceless artifact goes missing and believe me the array of suspects will have you intrigued the characters are all so vibrant, colorful and secretive with hidden agendas and of course this is a mystery so there's a schemer hidden in plain sight causing problems for others as if they didn't have enough. Although the array of characters is what may draw you in it is a plot so full of intrigue, mayhem, and misadventure that will have you entranced turning page after page with anticipation while laughing, cringing and stuttering with indignation for all at differing moments. I was compelled to read this cozy mystery in one sitting from start to finish so absorbed not noticing the passage of time until I reached its totally unexpected conclusion. Acquire " A Mystery at Moor House " book three in ( Lady Ellen Investigates) for hours of enjoyable and intriguing entertainment. Kat

Once again, Lady Ellen, Lottie & Prince get involved with a mystery. Ellen is visiting an old school friend, Phoebe. Whilst there she receives a letter from Captain Hamilton inviting to visit Moor House, where he is working for Conrad Doyle. There is definitely something iffy going on. There is a storm, that causes a huge tree to fall onto the bridge into the house, so they are trapped there. A stranger arrives, agreeing that he’s come for the auction! An Egyptian item which Conrad has bought & hopes to make his fortune by selling it. There’s a lot of things going on in this household which adds lots of information to help you find the answers!

Lady Ellen was less than thrilled when the garden party she was invited to turned out to be a match making opportunity, where her host, Conrad Doyle was after a rich wife. And when the priceless antique that he was trying to auction off goes missing, one of the staff is stabbed, things start to hot up in the mansion.

As always, the Lady Ellen books are fun and exciting, clever and intriguing. Great reads!

No restful vacation for our Lady Ellen

Lady Ellen finally thought her detective days were behind her . She and Lottie, her companion, were on their way to spend a day with her friend Captain Hamilton.

Unable to return home because of a storm that knocked down the only bridge into and out of the property, she soon finds herself embroiled in another mystery. A thief known as the Magpipe and a stolen, valuable Egyptian artifact has her in an adventure she wasn't expecting.

While visiting a friend, Ellen and her young companion, Lottie, are invited to a nearby estate where Ellen's friend, Captain Hamilton, is working briefly. Expecting to encounter a party, they are surprised to be the only guests. Until, that is, an unexpected guest shows up. A storm and a damaged bridge strand everyone at Moor House—with an injured man, and a missing Egyptian artifact. Naturally, Ellen investigates, despite not having a journal to keep notes in.

I enjoyed reading about Lady Ellen who this time, was invited to garden party, which turns out to be matchmaking dinner during which the mysterious amulet was robbed. She was asked to find the culprit but she wanted to leave as soon as possible.
The main character is likeable and intelligent, story is well written and suspenseful.

Lovely and surprising.

I like these books but I can’t understand what Lady Ellen being so before her time can not accept a relationship with Hamilton and educated man and I think more than just the son of an accountant or an expert in private security. Specially when she is trying to so hard to pair Lottie the heir of a Duke. But the books are good and entertaining.

A Not So Enjoyable Picnic…Mystery

The worst picnic ever turns into a mystery of acquaintances, friends, &
relatives. Some people are friendly, some seem rude, & others are downright obnoxious! But then there’s a mixture of a stolen artifact,
Heirloom jewelry, and a puzzle of whom is to blame. Plus a few secrets come to life.

Love this series of audiobooks (found them on Chirp). Kelly Mason’s fine story telling of a twisty mystery and her way with character development, combined with narration by Frances Butt equals Five star fun. Looking forward to next in series. Hoping for further development of subplot with a newly introduced character.

The Rich Becoming Poor

Very interesting the lengths that the "upper classes" will go to in order to hide their losses. That is definitely what Hamilton, Lady Ellen and Lottie must contend with at Moor House.

Fun read

Great combination of character and setting in this mystery. I think the constant attention to these and the clues to the crime have enhanced my enjoyment of the book. The people feel real in their virtues and flaws.
