Was interested in learning more about the religion itself and the book tells you a lot about the author's personal journey. It gets annoying at first, I'd rather just the stories, but it sends up helping the book a bit in the end (they could be shorter though).
The writer will say several times in the book that he is not an expert yet he continually gives advice to potential initiates. His tone switches back and forth from Storyteller to Advisor. I found this annoying and wished he just talked of his experience among the pataki and descriptions of orishas. There were moments when his tone felt condescending. His extensive description of his personal altar was unnecessary and boring. It felt like I met a guy at a party who has an interesting life story but I have to wade through a lot of narcissism before I hear anything worthwhile.
It wasn't a total disappointment. I enjoyed all the pataki.
