Happy release day to Screams From the Ocean Floor: A Horror Anthology!
Thank you to Broken Brain Books for providing me with an ARC of these deep sea horrors in exchange for an honest review.
The ocean— such an undiscovered and vast otherworld. This makes it the perfect writing prompt. There is room for an expansive amount of imaginative tales, and that's exactly what you get in this wonderfully creepy anthology full of oceanic horrors from some of the best, and some of my favorite indie authors.
The pacing of this collection of sixteen shorts was absolutely fantastic, as well as the endless amount of different tales that are told. Oceanic horror can get quite repetitive, but in Screams From the Ocean Floor, there's something for every reader.
From the semi-political, OceanGate reminiscent Dark Waters by Will Forbis, to Beneath the Waves— a retelling of the Titanic from Ollie Gill, you're in for a wild ride.
This anthology houses a ton of watery creature features, too. The Island of Final Resting Places by Gage Greenwood has a unique spin, while Into the Water by D.W. Hitz takes a creepy, sacrificial take. Rhonda Bobbitt's The Wavlings consists of creatures that are monstrous, murderous, and massive. INEXSUB by Megan Stockton will have you feeling claustrophobic and fearful of what her MC discovers...
Looking for stories on a beckoning ocean? Ocean Lust by RJ Roles and Hearing Things by Chad West are for you.
And if you want merfolk and sirens, check out And Then They Eat Your Eyes by Leigh Kenny or Screams From the Ocean Floor by Heather Ann Larson.
Personally, my favorite stories in this anthology were Beneath the Waves, Fool's Gold, She and the Sea, Screams From the Ocean Floor, and The Island of Final Resting Places. Every last one of these wild stories freaked me out in the best way— leaving a salty, unsavory, and terrible taste in my mouth.
A solid and entertaining collection this one was. For all of my oceanic horror fans— cheers!— this one is for you. If you're ready to set sail, grab this anthology. It will take you from land, to boat, and then to the depths of the horrifying sea.
I'm terrified of the ocean and large bodies of water so I naturally thought....why not freak myself out....
YALL. these stories are absolutely incredible. Some genuinely terrified me to the point that i felt true panic. The authors in this anthology are really talented and I loved some of the twists.
I had a few favorites. However I really liked all of the stories. You'd be missing out if you don't get your hands on this!
I already find the ocean kind of scary; its mysteries and vastness, dark depths and creepy creatures… so this book was terrifying for me. At times I had to put it down and take some deep breathes. I just know that a few of these tales will be on my mind the next time I go swimming (lake or sea or pool).
I’m so impressed with the variety of authors and stories in this collection! Bravo to the publisher and editor for bringing them all together. It was great to see some familiar names and their takes on “water/ocean/depth” horror. I really wouldn’t be able to pick a favourite, but I will say that I loved the reimagining of the titanic sinking as a cosmic event instead of just hitting an iceberg (“Beneath the Waves” by Ollie Gill).
So if you’re looking for dreadful accounts of sea creatures, murderers, old gods, and more -centred around bodies of water, grab this book asap!
Screams From the Ocean Floor is a hair-raising anthology that deepens the fear of the ocean with each story. All of the 16 tales masterfully blend psychological horror, cosmic horror and creature features, creating an assorted yet balanced collection. The ocean itself becomes a ominous force, testing the characters in unstable ways. The diversity of perspectives and well-paced tension make each story sharp and chilling. If you're already cautious of the ocean, this anthology will add to that fear, conveying a riveting and horrifying dive into the deep dark depths of the ocean.
Overall a 4.5 star read. This horror anthology has an ocean theme, appropriately picked by the authors as this project started at the time that OceanGate's submersible Titan 2 went missing / imploded. Seeing that I have thalassophobia and megalohydrothalassophobia, this book definitely had my anxiety at 1000 lol.
Dark Waters by Wil Forbis kicks off the anthology with a different spin on billionaires dying while taking an overpriced underwater excursion. I felt the story started off really good and the premise of the story was haunting, but the ending fell short for me and the "villain monologue" made it feel like the author was just over writing the story at that point. I do give this story a solid 3 stars though.
And Then They Eat Your Eyes by Leigh Kenny follows a man who is stuck on a boat by himself after his friend disappears after a night of heavy drinking and fishing in the Bermuda Triangle. He recounts the lore of sirens that lure people into the water and ....then they eat your eyes. As he contemplates his life choices and tries to find a way out of his situation many things go wrong. Just when he thinks he has it figured out..... things take a turn. I really liked this story, the feeling of solitude and despair really got my heart pumping. I give this story 4 stars.
Sand by Derek Heath is kind of a weird underwater love ish story LOL. Two deep sea divers who have been working on a project for a long time go searching the ocean floor and find something completely new. This is a horror anthology so of course the something new, is nothing good for them LOL. I seriously wanted to scream while reading this because the anxiety was overwhelming on this one, I gave this one 4.5 stars
Oceanlust by RJ Roles follows a ship and its crew with mysterious cargo that no one knows what it is. The wiind dies and the ship is stuck still in the middle of the ocean as the crew slowly starts to go a little crazy under as they hear voices of loved one's trying to lure them in to the water. I gave this story 3.5 stars as I felt this one was a bit drawn out and had some stuff that didn't add to the story at all.
Screams From the Ocean Floor by Heather Ann Larson is the book title story that is also very accurately depicted on the cover of the book. This follows a young girl who's grandfather went missing and she finds a journal with a note addressed to her explaining a find he made. She tries to befriend a sea creature named Kai, that her grandfather had journaled about and things start to unfold. The ending of this story gave me horrible anxiety....so I loved it. LOL I give this one 4 stars.
Inexsub by Megan Stockton is a different type of submersible story. I thought it was very reckless of the MC to not allow all of the system checks to complete before being released "into the wild" and for a situation that is already extremely dangerous as is, I couldn't really get in to the story that started with such recklessness. I know that this factor is how the whole story comes to fruition and the premise of the story was good. I gave this story 3.5 stars
Dead Man's Cove by Patrick McNulty is a story that follows a ship that is overtaken by a giant wave right as they spot Dead Man's Cove, a hidden island with a lot of lore to it. This story fell flat for me and dragged on in places where it could have been shorter and then lacked in the areas that I would have liked more. I gave this story 3 stars.
The Island of Final Resting Places by Gage Greenwood is in a shared journal/diary format following the entries of a group of friends who gather at a friends mansion on a private island. Wanting to document memories for the future they each write in the journal, and start talking about sightings of a strange creature. I won't put any more details here but this was a really good story and I loved the journal formatting of the story. I gave this story 4.5 stars
Hearing Things by Chad West is following two couples on a boat. One by one they start being lured by the water. Now, this is obviously a very vague synopsis as I don't want to give everything away, but it was a really good story of the lengths we go to for someone we love. I have this story 4 stars.
Beneath The Waves by Ollie Gill is a cosmic cult take on the Titanic's sinking. Uh... this story would have been a great story if it weren't the Titanic. Like, any ship other than the Titanic. I think there are just too many adaptations of stories for the ship that putting a cosmic cult spin on it just seemed TOO far fetched for me personally. I gave this story 3 stars.
Into The Water by D. W. Hitz is told from the point of view of a young boy who is sacrificed by his village to some God(s). I don't remember a reason being given for the sacrificing as far as what the village got out of the deal. But the boy finds himself in a cave that has a pool with creatures working an underwater "construction" job. He ends up meeting up with 2 other sacrifices, one that has been there for quite some time. This story was super cute, and I would love a follow up story on the older girl's backstory and survival LOL . I gave this story 4 stars.
Fool's Gold by L. M. Kaplin follows a couple on vacation trying to fix their marriage... well... one of them is trying to fix it anyways. While snorkeling at The Great Barrier Reef the husband finds a coin and takes it. Again, this is a horror anthology so there are no happy endings LOL. I did feel like the dialog between the husband and the wife was a little off... I just didn't feel like it flowed at all even if it were trying to portray the awkwardness and resentment between the two... and it is this reason I gave the story 3.75 stars. But the ending was great!!!
Only The Ship by Charlie Walls follows a husband who is on vacation with his wife and child but goes on a fishing excursion without them. Some stuff happens and he is the last one on the ship with no idea where he is or how to navigate back to land. This is kind of a Bermuda Triangle - Survivor ish type story where there is a time gap. The last paragraph left me a little confused but the story itself was decent and had a lot of potential that I think could have been met in a longer story or a stand alone novella. I gave this story 3.5 stars.
What the Tide Rolled In by Joshua MacMillan follows an older brother who is saddled with having to watch his younger brother (12 years old). A mysterious island shows up by an ocean town and the boys head to go see it while the older of the two also meets up with friends to party while the younger one finds his way onto the island to explore. The writing of the younger boy made him seem much younger than 12 but overall a cute story but nothing that gave me anxiety. I gave this one 3.25 stars.
The Wavlings by Rhonda Bobbitt has a fishing town with some mysterious screams and murders that leads to the sheriff putting a ban on fishing for awhile. A group of fisherman decide not to listen and go out to fish anyways. They encounter the reason behind the screams and killings and the story takes off.... I gave this one 3 stars because the dialog really didn't come off as natural and I personally don't like cliffhangers for short stories.
She And The Sea by Angel Van Atta was saving the best for last, in my opinion. Angel.... are you ok? LOL This story does involve the unaliving of children by a child serial unaliver ... so make sure you read this one responsibly. Angel is so good at bringing the heartbreak it's disturbing. I feel like I need a novel from the girl's point of view with more of her backstory and more in depth details of her growing up and her thoughts as she does her deeds. This story was so good. I gave this one 5 stars.
The book overall is entertaining which is why it is an overall 4.5 for me. Thank you so much LM Kaplin and Broken Brain Books for allowing me the opportunity to read this anthology before it's release!!! I will definitely be getting a physical copy of this book for my shelves!!
Quite a mixed selection! Some good, some not soo good.. Several had very little time devoted to the creatures, unfortunately! My faves were ' Fool's Gold', 'The Island of Final Resting Places', and 'Screams from the Ocean Floor'. It was nice that every story had a different watery setting!
Screams from the Ocean Floor includes an introduction by LM Kaplin and 16 stories by some super talented authors - Wil Forbis, Leigh Kenny, Derek Heath, RJ Roles, Heather Ann Larson, Megan Stockton, Patrick McNulty, Gage Greenwood, Chad West, Ollie Gill, D.W. Hitz, LM Kaplin, Charlie Walls, Joshua MacMillan, Rhonda Bobbitt, and Angel Van Atta.
I absolutely love water horror! You’ll never find me scuba diving, or even snorkelling for that matter, because the ocean terrifies me. Which is exactly why I loved these stories so much! From sand monsters, mermaids, and mysterious islands, to underwater caves, giant squid, portals to another dimension, and killer crabs, this anthology gives you everything you’re looking for in water horror. Definitely recommend!
I have to be open, the biggest reason I picked up the book was because the cover caught my attention, so well done there. The stories inside do the cover justice. Each story has its take on oceanic horror and honestly, it's gotten me to rethink whether or not I'm afraid of water. It's hard to choose a favorite story, so I won't. Some stories had cliffhangers, which was a bit of a disappointment for short stories, I hope the authors of those stories intend to continue those stories.
Despite that, I think you would be remiss if you didn't pick up this anthology. I give it a solid 4.5/5 stars and round it to 5.
If you’re afraid of deep, dark water and the stuff that lurks beneath the surface then this anthology is the one for you!
Fantastic, bloody, scary, unsettling, and murky stories from awesome authors such as RJ Roles, Megan Stockton, Gage Greenwood, Chad West, D.W. Hitz, LM Kaolin, Joshua MacMillan, Angel Van Atta and others.
The ocean is a place of mystery to humanity, unexplored, unknown, what lurks under the surface? These tales of the dark depths explore what could be waiting for us below the water, grab your wetsuit and dive in.
Dark Waters A billionaire explorer lost under the ocean and a viral tweet that causes nightmares And then they eat your eyes A boat trip for two college friends turns tasty. Sand It gets everywhere doesn’t it?! Oceanlust The ocean is a powerful thing, it can make a man lose his mind Screams from the ocean floor Do you know why sometimes there are screams from the ocean, here’s why. Inexsub A lesson in claustrophobia and how to handle the pressure. Dead Man’s Cove Shipwrecked by a Captain’s obsession The Island of Final resting places A group of friends annual get together with a surprise guest. Hearing Things A boat of friends hear the call of the sea Beneath the Waves A survivor of a famous shipwreck tells his story. Into the Water What moves in the cave? Fool’s Gold A treasure found on holiday brings surprising results Only the Ship Deep sea fishing but what is in the water? What the Tide Rolled In An unexplored island just appeared so of course we have to take a look! The Wavlings A monster from the deep needs to feed. She and the Sea A girl’s mission to destroy beauty
16 authors come together to give us 16 dark tales of the deep, mysterious ocean. In this collection we can find sirens, portals to hell, take a trip to the Bermuda Triangle, submarine screams, and go to lost islands with dark secrets. We can read about journal entries, stinky sea monsters, a different look at the Titanic, ships lost at sea, and the constant dread and fear the ocean has.
If you have a fear of the open water, this collection will add into that. Each story was written very well and brought their own verson of fear. Usually, I enjoy a couple of stories in an anthology, but with this one, it was hard to pick a favourite. They were all really good. Also, the lineup is excellent! I highly suggest grabbing a copy of Scream From The Ocean Floor today.
I LOVE aquatic horror. It's a genre that I didn't know I needed until I read Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant earlier this year. As soon as I had read that book, I knew I needed EVERYTHING that I could find that fell into the same horror niche. The stories in this range from cosmic to creature and include everything in between. I loved every single story in this collection and I'm gonna be reading the other Screams anthologies as I've noticed there's a couple floating around. This book also gave me a taste of a lot of different authors who's works I'll be looking up!
This was such a great read! A few of the stories really stood out above the rest but overall I will happily give 5 stars! The first page of each story is gorgeous! Hats off to Heather for her editing skills
Screams from the Ocean Floor is the first in the “Screams” anthology series from Broken Brain Books and it hits on all the fears. These sixteen stories range from siren’s songs luring people to their fateful ends to horrific creatures in the water to creatures coming out of the water to people going into the depths, and more … all of them take unwitting souls to their violent and painful deaths. I read this in a buddy-read group and there were a few of us that have phobias of the sea, the reactions of those individuals to these tales were intense and visceral, and the entire group loved the anthology. The lineup of authors is like an all-star indie horror roster with Gage Greenwood, Leigh Kenny, D.W. Hitz, Megan Stockton and Angel van Atta … just to name a few. It’s almost impossible for me to give an anthology five stars, as there is always a story or two that doesn’t grab me, for whatever reason. Screams from the Ocean Floor is a very solid four though. It also reaffirmed why I prefer mountains to the beach and have zero desire to enter the ocean. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should.
The ocean has always simultaneously repelled and fascinated me. It's an objectively terrifying place. The stories in Screams From the Ocean Floor all center around water and the ocean, from creature features to psychopaths. I had a great time with the anthology. 4 stars

First things first, I am not a big water person. I will adventure all day in streams and creeks, but if I have to deal with large bodies of water or boats... immediate panic. So you might ask yourself, then why would you read horror stories that involve water? Well, with the list of authors and the gorgeous cover art, I couldn't resist. Pretty glad I didn't pass on this either as each page turn, each story, just got better and better as this book went. From mysterious islands, to pirates, mermaids, sea monsters, giant squid, portals to another dimension, and the scariest....the regular every day human. I wouldn't be lying when I say I held my breathe a few times while reading this just imagining what was going on in the stories. But if I were you, I wouldn't hold my breathe, but would take that leap and grab your copy!
This anthology was really good the sixteen authors did a great job.You will never look at the ocean or a cruise the same way.I recommend this for fans of horror.
The ocean is a beautiful thing, but what lurks within it. Come along as divers encounter monsters. submarines find things better left undiscovered. These tales will make you think about what hides in the ocean deep.
Thank you to all the authors who collaborated to create this collection
It's a rare treat that I find a collection of stories where I enjoyed all of them. This one takes place mainly in the water. Most of the stories have awesome twists at the end. The stories are all well written with atmospheric and believable characters. The settings are around the world.
One of the best stories is Fool's Gold by L M Kaplin A wife believes she has found the perfect solution to her daily routine, or does she?
16 stories are in the collection.

I recently read this anthology with a group of friends and we all agreed that it was excellent. Each of the 16 stories contained within it was unique and entertaining. Whether you’re looking for sea monsters or human monsters at sea, you won’t be disappointed. Whatever your fear of the ocean/water is, these stories will deliver and then some. I enjoyed some stories more than others but there truly wasn’t a bad one in the bunch. My personal favorite was Inexsub so thanks Megan Stockton for that one. It honed in on one of the things that scares me most about the deep sea. I was DEEPLY uncomfortable for the entire story and it was great 🥰. (also shout out to Leigh Kenny and Heather Ann Larson for my other faves in the bunch)
I had a ton of fun with this collection, each story was dark, gruesome, horrifying and unsettling. It takes you to all ends of the world, and has such a diverse cast of characters and story themes.
We have politics and history, in Dark Water and Beneath the Waves.
Pirates and Bizarre Sea Entities in Fools Gold and The Island Of Final Resting Places.
Sirens and Merfolk in Screams from the Ocean Floor & And They Eat Your Eyes.
A little bit of something for everyone, with great pacing and fantastic writing this anthology was so much fun to read! There wasn’t a bad story in this one, 5 sea monsters all the way! 🦑🦑🦑🦑🦑
Biggest thank you to Broken Brain Books for the ARC of this collection! 🖤🤘🏻
I went into this book with a fear of the ocean, and I'm leaving it with an even greater one. My thalassophobia has only grown with this collection.
A married couple on the brink of divorce go for one last ditch vacation on a cruise ship. A young girl meets a new friend at her missing grandfather's house. A journal from a group of friends' yearly vacation property. A young man comments on social media about a missing submersible.
The majority of stories in this collection were excellent, terrifying, chill inducing, heart racing reads, but the ones that stood out to me the most were from Heather, Leigh Kenny, and Angel Van Atta.
If you are afraid of the ocean like me, I would still say to read this anthology book!😅 all 16 short stories were creepy and perfectly written to make you afraid of the ocean and what’s inside of it (that we know of👀) I liked the flow and of each story, though they were short, they kept me fully immersed🌊
This anthology had a few good fish in its waters, well crafted and at a good pace. Others felt like your avarage monster trope thrown in just to end the story and move on. Overall a fairly good mix for quiet horror / monsters fans.
Such a great horror anthology from some of the most talented horror writers today. Creepy, claustrophobic, and all round spooky! Lol, if you don't have a fear of the ocean, this book will give you that fear!
