No, aspoň mají draka.

Australská fantasy od populárních autorek MM romancí jako vystřižená z Dungeons & Dragons kampaně s přáteli (takové, která se totálně zvrhla). Obsahuje svéráznou družinu, kritické nepochopení mise, záměnu identit, ztraceného prince a v neposlední řadě nejroztomilejšího draka, jakého jste kdy potkali!

I love Lisa Henry, and I really love her when she writes funny stories, so it's natural that I couldn't wait to try Red Heir. Though it wasn't a full home-run for me, it was charming and utterly delightful.

Red Heir really shined for me with the comedic moments. It reminded me a little bit of The Lightning-Struck Heart but dialed down a bit. There were scenes where I was shaking with laughter while reading in bed (sorry, hubby). The dialogue and the cast of character was just so fun. It was such an easy, entertaining read. However, I could have used even a wee bit more of that energy with the romance aspect of the story.

I think having only one POV made the romance feel a bit weaker for me. I didn't get into the head-space of both MCs, which made it harder to see the relationship evolving. Sure, I heard about how these guys liked it each other, but it felt very sudden when they got together. It felt too soon, like I needed more UST to really ramp up the emotions. I didn't get the whys of their relationship, and, honestly, the heat level was fairly low for Lisa Henry book. Also, the characters didn't feel as developed as I would have liked.

Though the main characters and their romance could have used some work, the story was so fun that I didn't even care all that much. Plus, I was excited to be introduced to a new author (Sarah Honey), and I'm pumped to see what else she has in store for me. As always, a very enjoyable read from the lovely Lisa Henry.

Initially, the story had me laughing with its clever humor and whimsical charm, but as the plot progressed, it quickly devolved into a series of tedious sex jokes that lost their appeal. The romance was disappointing; the chemistry between the main characters was virtually nonexistent, making their interactions feel forced and unconvincing. Instead of developing a deeper connection, the narrative became fixated on repetitive jokes about inviting a third party into their intimate moments, or one character joking about sexual escapades with strangers, or sex jokes about horses, etc... These attempts at humor not only missed the mark but also detracted from any meaningful storyline.

Despite these shortcomings, the tiny dragon character was a delight, bringing joy and charm with every appearance. The ensemble of quirky and endearing side characters added a lighthearted touch to the overall atmosphere, creating moments of genuine warmth. However, the main character and his love interest fell flat; they contributed little to the overall narrative arc, ultimately failing to engage my interest.

After discovering the prince's true identity, I had hoped for an exciting twist or a surge of dramatic tension. Instead, we were thrust back into the realm of ludicrous sex jokes that overshadowed any potential for suspense or character development. It became increasingly evident that the humor relied heavily on tired clichés, which only served to frustrate rather than amuse.

In conclusion, I was left wishing that the tiny dragon had taken center stage as the main character, bringing with it an abundance of charm and wit that the rest of the narrative sorely lacked.

If you are looking for light-hearted fantasy, humor, and a little sexy... this is another great find. It reminded me a little of The Lightning-Struck Heart, which is one of my favorite series because of its hilarity. And, I've already started the second book and it's even funnier than the first. Plus, Kindle Unlimited - free baby!!!! If that's not enough to entice you:

Yep, they have a dragon. A finger-sized dragon who happens to be adorable, delightful, and working on his ferociousness.

So the story is that this shifty pickpocket gets thrown in the dungeon for being a shifty pickpocket and has a cellmate that he calls "Grub".... because of the grubbiness. They are suddenly rescued by an elf, an orc, a dwarf, and a human. Sounds pretty normal for a fantasy book so far.

Maybe a little tangible help instead?

But, it's so much more because the elf is a collective anarchist, the orc is... dumb special.. and sweet, the dwarf is maybe a female - hard to tell because of the beard, and the human is an idiot. When you add a prince and a pickpocket to the equation you get a lot of fun times. Plus, of course there is a swamp of death... which may or may not contain a goth/emo guy with an attitude.

You say that now but you haven't heard the nihilistic rantings of the guyliner dude yet.

It's basically one of those adventure/quest stories with very colorful and fun characters. Definitely light and sweet, not heavy fight scenes and bad things happening. But, totally a fun diversion if you need a smile.

“We are travelling with a seven-foot green orc, a dwarf, an elf, a fingerdragon, and an idiot. We’re going to draw at least a little attention.”

What do you do when your imprisoned-by-evil-uncle long-lost rightful heir to the Fantasyland throne needs to be rescued from his dungeon cell in what can only be a clever plot to turn that rescue into a murder? Well, you gotta have the world’s most incompetent rescue party, of course! And so we have an anarchist “Houses and Humans”-playing teenage elf, a bearded money-loving female dwarf who is too normal to get much page time, a giant friendly orc with an intellect of a bowl of soup and a deep desire to become a bard, and a pocket-size definitely-not-poisonous dragon, with their fearless human leader who can’t read maps, gets kidnapped in the middle of nervous crapping and is a remarkable cowardly perpetually concussed idiot.

They’d know the prince by his distinctive red hair, of course. Except that there are two redheads in the cell, and how can you tell who’s the prince and who’s an impostor? Especially when our extra redhead is a certain Loth, a pickpocket/scribe/part-time whore who “really was getting too old to spend the night in shackles, at least without a safe word” and just wants out of the cell. And who does not think his grubby cellmate can possibly be the prince.
“Another emotion that Loth wasn’t familiar with stirred in his gut. He was fairly sure this one was guilt. He wasn’t a fan.”

“If Loth were to start feeling bad just because he took advantage of someone, where would it end? With him unemployed, that’s where—pickpockets didn’t build a successful career on being decent human beings.”

It started chock-full of irreverent snark punctuated with juvenile humor most often referencing, ahem, equinophilia () and in-your-face parody of Dungeons and Dragons (I presume, having only theoretical acquaintance with the game) and conventions of “traditional” fantasy genre. I adored it for quite a few pages, I’ll admit.

The shine did wear off eventually, though, when the characters sadly failed to progress to beyond two-dimensional sketches and punchlines, and when the romance and sudden all-consuming love was added to the fun adventures, constant trash-talking and inexhaustible elf sex. The jokes got a bit flat, the plot became beyond silly, the climax (hehe) and resolutions much too convenient. And ultimately despite the hilarious beginning I was left a bit unsatisfied and feeling that what could have been a very original comedy ended up a much more typical romance with adventures eventually relegated to the filler between the romance scenes.
“Maybe, Loth pondered, just this once, he could try not being an absolute arse. He’d heard people managed it all the time.”

Not a bad story — but it could have, should have been *more*. It had the potential. It still kept me entertained, but I anticipate I’ll forget it rather quickly. Still, I don’t regret reading it, so that’s that. And I did chuckle quite a bit, especially in the first half.

3 stars.
“Swamp of Death,” she repeated under her breath.
“To be fair,” Loth said, “It’s less Death and more Swamp of One Slightly Murderous Anarchist Elf, but that wouldn’t sound as impressive.”

It's coming on July 30!

It's a ridiculous romp, and I hope you have as much fun reading it as we did writing it.

Anything you want to know, here's the place to ask!

I'll be adding the cover art as soon as I can, and trust me, it's amazing!

Overall, an easy fantastical romp that starts with a wrongly imprisoned prince, a reluctant hero who grows a heart, and an eclectic cast to round out an adventure to right some grievances.

If imitation is the best form of flattery, then regardless of whether the author actually has read Klune, I liken this to “Tales of Verania” lite - complete with above mentioned quest, a giant (in the form of an orc), a dragon, and all sorts of silly shenanigans that ultimately ends with found family. Enjoy!

This was lovely, I really enjoyed this. Perhaps a little more romance would have been nice, but it was still a great read.

Loth is a pickpocket, a very charming pickpocket. Except when he gets thrown into the dungeons. Apparently guards are pretty immune to his charms.

He shares a cell with a grubby young man who he names Grub. Grub doesn’t want to be called Grub, but Loth loves to mess with him, so he keeps calling him that.

When their cell suddenly get invaded by an elf, an orc, a dwarf, a finger dragon, and an idiot, they mention being there to rescue the prince. Of course Loth grabs this opportunity and says he is the prince. It helps that he dyed his hair red with henna, just like the long lost prince. But then Grub yells that he is the prince, but of course no one believes him.

Since there are now two redheads, they simply take both of them. But it soon turns out that their rescuers are not that great at this whole rescuing thing. And when Grub turns out to actually be a very pretty young man named Quinn, Loth isn’t so sure that he can keep his distance. Although he suspects Quinn might be more than he seems…

This was a fun book. I loved how this crazy rescue party started out as just these weird group thrown together, and then turned into friends along the way (except Scott, Scott was still an idiot ). And Loth and Quinn were pretty cute together.

I loved the hurt/comfort in this when Loth learns that Quinn was held captive for 5 years and when he notices how skinny he is. But it never turns too serious, it was still light-hearted and fun. But I was also glad it didn’t skip over more emotional moments.

One thing I did notice was that no one ever asked or mentioned Loth’s name right til 90%. Everyone called him your Grace since they either thought he was the prince or they made sure everyone else thought it. And even Quinn never once asked his name. So color me surprised when Quinn casually mentions Loth’s name at 90% while I thought he didn’t even know it yet. Now I could have totally missed it of course, but I was really waiting for someone to ask Loth’s real name when they figured out he wasn’t the real prince.

I’ve been a fan of Lisa Henry for years and I always love how nicely her stories flow. I wasn’t familiar with Sarah Honey yet, but I can say that this book just worked for me.

Reminiscent of "The Princess Bride," with its irreverent humor, eccentric ensemble, secret identities, a mysterious man in black, the Swamp of Death, and True Love, this fantasy adventure story was filled with delightfully good-hearted and madcap fun.

The story features Loth, an imprisoned scribe/pickpocket/ (sometimes whore) and all-around snarky ne’er-do-well who delights in teasing and taunting his cellmate, who he nicknames Grub (a skinny, grubby, prickly young man).

There is a foolish human farmer/wannabe hero, a naive and giant Orc, a cranky, axe welding, bearded lady Dwarf, a sexy and rebellious teenage Elf (who lives for the RPG inspired ‘Houses and Humans’) and a scene stealing dragon (who will also steal your heart).

“We’re your rescue party, m’lord! Come to save you from the clutches of tyranny!”

This is a tale full of adventuring, romance, and outrageously entertaining capers. The perfect way to get away from the real world for a while and enjoy some smiles.

Recommend!

My people!

This was pretty darn funny. A total parody of D&D; honestly, the Houses and Humans game still makes me snort when I think of a certain moody, teenage elf. There's a quest, a rescue, evil relations, a location of certain death, and a motley crew of questionable characters.

A collectivist anarchist elf, an orc, an adorable dragon, a dwarf, and a couple humans: an idiot, a prince, and an imposter; what more could you ask for in your party. Twisty-turvy, amusing, sexy, and even emotionally touching. Roll the dice and have a laugh with this one.

Super entertaining and very funny.

This is a cute comedy set in far far away land where a pickpocket and a prince get ‘rescued’ by a happy band of misfits: a sweet-natured orc, a handsome - and yes he knows it! - elf, a fierce, bearded dwarf lady and a (very) dumb human.

If this seems to ring a bell, yes, this does remind a lot of The Lightning-Struck Heart, just not as OTT and outrageous. Bearing that in mind, you can imagine that the quest to return the Prince back home encounters many a humorous hick-up, with particular highlights in the Swamp of Death.

Lisa Henry’s comic writing is first class, her banter a real delight, so if you’re in need of a laugh, I would full-heartedly recommend this.

Unfortunately, the romance falls a bit sideways which is a shame because there's so much scope for it. Still, there’s a lot to enjoy watching selfish, happy-go-lucky Loth fall slowly for vulnerable, yet sharp-tongued Grub and turning into a better man in the process.

My top favourite though was Pie, the mini dragon. Can I have one please?

Don’t miss the fun here, guys! This is totally worth it.

I won an ARC of this book in a giveaway from the authors. An honest review was appreciated, but not required.

I really loved this book. I think comedic fantasy is one of my favorites, but it can be hard to find a book that strikes the right balance of the two. This book did a fantastic job setting the humor in a world that felt real, and well rounded characters. I really like the main couple. They had great chemistry, and played off each other well. The secondary cast was just as well drawn, and added so much to the story. The elves are my personal favorite.

The plot is well crafted, and the humor is well balanced, and it doesn't fell forced or out of place. It adds to the story without becoming the whole of the story. It was exactly what I've been looking to read something fun, and funny while still being grounded in a solid well built story.

This is a funny book that I think would amuse both both fantasy lovers and people who think fantasy is dumb. A moron would-be hero and some characters who are in it for the promised payment agree to rescue a lost prince from a dungeon. They are pretty incompetent. Luckily the sulky teen elf played a lots of Dungeons and Dragons Houses and Humans, so at least he can read a map. Or could before they accidentally burned it.

Since I know a lot of my friends read The Chronicle of Heloise & Grimple, I'll offer that as a comparison, although this is a bit more romantic and not quite as clever.

An MM adventure comedy romp is pretty difficult to find - or maybe I haven't tried looking hard enough? - so this was such JOY to read. Even from the very get go, I chuckled along with the set-up and the hilarious storytelling. Yes, this is a quest, with a pickpocket pretending to be a prince, the hostage (probably the real prince), the orc, the dwarf, the elf, and the idiot human. Oh wait, also the dragon, Pyromaneous the Third.

Maybe the characters are a bit two-dimensional -- there's no 'surprising' traits coming from them like, the idiot is unbelievably idiot until the very end... and it would be nice if there's more to it than meets the eye...

However, I also have too much fun with this; it's been a while! Plus Loth's parents are probably the most awesome parents ever. So yep, this is a winner.

Loth and Grub are rescued by a colorful bunch of creatures... Ada the dwarf, Dave the orc, Calarian the elf and a human named Scott, and let’s not forget the dragon Pie.
Oke, to be honest, they are not the most intelligent group.
They thought they were rescuing the redheaded Prince, but both prisoners were redheads and they both claimed to be the prince only Loth had a bigger mouth so he was the convincing one.
To be sure they were both taken and all get on their way to... Scott knows where to, he called himself the leader.

“We’ve got an orc, an elf, a dwarf, an idiot, and a dragon—what could possibly go wrong?”

While they travel all together it seems Grub is very thin and ribs are showing. Loth asks himself who the hell this thin and dirty man was and what has he done to end up behind bars. Loth was thrown in the dungeon for pickpocketing, but this man...

-your Princiness, your Lordiness, your Worshipfulness, your Highnesses- there is more, when you read this in the context you’ll understand why it’s so hilarious and delightful.

The story is about their journey to deliver the prince to the client who will pay them.
A lot is happening, I don’t want to spoil. I tell you it was smashing ridiculous, sexy and exiting.
I’m in awe how these authors wrote a journey that’s frivolous, joyful and playful and sexy
Oh boy, the sexual encounters were just art. The elves were delightful and how the others comment on their virility, I’d say jealousy ha!.
The world created here was magnificent, the ambience awesome, there was a wonderful stupidity, it cracked me, super-duper done, the humor was so so great.
It’s an amazing eventful fun journey with a deserved hea.

This is a romantic comedy people! This is how it's done! I have never laughed so much that I cried with a book, never!

The story was a little bit simple but very well written and enjoyable. It was a mission to get back the Red Heir to the main capital, and the journey took almost all the book. In every aventure there are problems and the very first one is, that there are two heirs, so the rescue party decides to take them both.

The characters were so fucking amazing I don't know where to start! We have the real heir and the fake one, they have a love hate relationship at first, their banter was so fricking enjoyable and of course when they got to know each other all of it changes, but I lived for their interactions!

We also have an ogre who is not so smart; an elf who is beautiful, has ears like a bat and is a gamer; then a dwarf who is fierce, smart, and loyal until she gets paid; a human who believes himself a hero but is just plain stupid; and a finger dragon who has more personality than most of them. That's the rescue party, and believe me they make for really funny situations, I loved all of them, except Scott, but he was written to be hated.

The love built slowly like it should, and it was delightful to read. I really enjoyed being in Loth's pov, he's the most funny and witty character I've ever read and he never changed, even when he was courageous he did it without noticing and then was surprised about it! Loved it!

There were no big plot twists, or big battles or anything, everything was quite simple but oh so enjoyable, I'm sure I'll read this again! Loooved it! 💜

I rarely read funny stories, but after reading The Book Thief, I needed something radically different. I chose this book and it was probably what I needed.

At first, Loth irritated me. His idiotic comments and jokes were really annoying. But luckily then we gradually begin to see the more serious side of Loth, and he has ceased to be so annoying. Thank goodness, because I don't know if I could endure this Loth-jester.

I liked the whole idea for this story - the two princes and the group of unusual characters, referring to the classic fantasy in Lord of the Rings style. This is a really good and fun idea. I was a little surprised at how long it took Loth to figure out the true identity of his cellmate. For a while, it wasn't clear to me whether Loth knew who the boy was or not. Also, I don't quite know why, but after reading blurb, I thought that Grub would be some older muscular guy, so I was a bit confused at the beginning.

I saw that the next books in the series are about the other characters we met in this book and to be honest I'm not sure if I want to read about them. I was completely surprised that these characters have their own books because they looked like sidekicks to me. I am also not convinced that there is enough depth in them that I am interested in their stories. But we will see.

I was looking for a funny story, which I rarely do, and that was just such a story. It suited this moment well. As I said, I don't know if I will read any more books in this series.

Well. Twelve-year-old bathroom humor, a complete lack of world building, shallow characterizations, silly immature characters, clumsy sentence structure at the beginning of the book, mixture of old and new world dialogue... there was nothing about this book that worked for me. I've loved some of Lisa Henry's other stories, but it's obvious someone else had a hand in writing this book.

I might get back to this at some point if the mood strikes me, but for now, giving up around the half way mark. This one is definitely on me, the characters/plot/tone (basically the sense of humor) is just a bit too silly and juvenile without much real comedy.

This was very cute, I really like Lisa Henry's writing and I was happy to see she had a new one on KU. It is a quest as you can see only from reading the blurb and it is also a romance. I would call it romance lite, which was perfectly okay by me. I said many times that I absolutely love SFF/fantasy books which have a main story that has little or nothing to do with romance and gay couple ( or creating a gay couple) as a secondary storyline.

What left me not very satisfied was that this was characterization LITE too in my opinion. I was charmed when I was reading it, but when I finished it I did not feel like I knew main characters very well besides very few things about them, if that makes sense.

This story was a hoot.

High fantasy in theme, featuring an assortment of quirky characters and magical beings, Red Heir had an impossible quest vibe going for it, which immediately pulled me in.

Never slow of pace, this story jumps to the quick, with narrator, pickpocket and sass-master Loth, finding himself broken out of prison, along with his new mysterious cell mate, Grub, by a hodgepodge group of supernatural misfits, who are on a mission to rescue the long-lost Prince of Aguillon.

Never one to miss a prime opportunity to turn the tides of fortune, Loth immediately dives in with claims of royal stature, setting off a course of mishaps and hilarity as the unlikely group head to the capital to put “the Prince” back on his thrown.

It’s clear from the first who the real prince is, at least to the reader, but the silliness of the situation and the antics this lot get up to is half the fun—if not, all the fun!

Featuring a group made up of a couple of humans, a collectivist anarchist elf, a badass female dwarf, and a guileless orc and his pet finger dragon, this cast of characters made for never a dull moment and left quite the fond impression.

There was a bit of romance to go along with the adventure-filled quest to put the Kingdom of Aguillon to rights, but I didn’t find myself too immersed in that side of the storytelling. What transpires between Loth and his love interest was sweet and steamy, but not as compelling as I usually prefer my romances be in my fantasy reading.

Like many, I couldn’t help but compare this to Klune’s Tales from Verania series, which, as my friends will know, is one of my top favourite M/M series and therefore hard to beat. The comparisons are positive in nature though, as I’m always down for a new high fantasy adventure to immerse myself in.

As the first in a trilogy, this definitely set the scene for more fun and shenanigans to come.

When you expect humor and get obnoxious gits instead. Not feeling this one. Which is a shame because it has such a good premise. I love a well-done "incompetent misfits" trope. This unfortunately relies on wall-to-wall potty humor, which isn't my thing.

🎵Narrated by: Nick J Russo🎵 Ok I need more of this narrator ASAP. Not only did he slay the voices but boy can moan! 🥵 I was not expecting a fairy tale adventure to be this hot so thanks for that NJR. Also, the voice he did for Scott after he was hit in the face and had a broken nose was amazing! 🤩 The only other audiobook I can say was this whimsical and outlandish with voices was Chloe Archer’s Tentacle Tales. 💗💗

It took me entirely too long to listen to this but I adored the hell out of it. Loth and Grub were darling and I loved watching them go from disliking each other to more. This is about a group of “rescuers” that were recruited to bring the prince home but their leader Scott was a complete bonehead and the supporting cast of characters made me laugh out loud.

I’m definitely going to keep reading the series as it’s included with Kobo Plus and I have a free trial right now. Oh and I’d like a pocket dragon please. I need one thanks. 🤭🫶🏻

However, there were some cringy phrases thrown into this from time to time that had me 😬😬😬😬 The worst being “soft little mouth of muscle” for the asshole. Seriously, I’d rather have read “back hole” and we know how much I detest that one. 😂 Other than that this was cute af and I can’t wait to listen to the rest!

Fun and campy!

Love it, tho I personally think it's a bit idiot-sist. Poor Scott! Not like he can help being what he is. OK, some of it is justified - like snitching, but the whole wrong map reading and babbling? So not his fault, imo, dyslexia (among other disorders) is to blame for sures. He kinda grew on me. Dave's ballads won't be as great without his misadventures!

Reminded me a bit of Thick as Thieves by Tali Spencer with Dirty Alchemist substituting for the Unicorn.

Absolutely adored the diversity in this book! :D

I read this after asking for orc suggestions in a Facebook group. Even though the first two aren't even about the orc (in a romantic sense), I devoured this and the following two books in record time. They were like a soul cleanse. Such a joy to read. So lighthearted and laugh-out-loud hilarious. I loved all the characters, and while I went into this wanting some sweet orcs... as much as I love Dave... Benji and Calarian quickly became my favourites. This didn't change in book two.

Read this trilogy if you want to read about elves and orcs and princes and kings in a fantasy setting but without the heaviness. These are adorable and hilarious, but still sexy. I already want to reread them all.
