The Syndrome #1

The Roommate Syndrome

Rate this book
Christina and Chance have kept their marriage alive for over a decade. Through four kids, a dog, and seven—make that eight—dead goldfish and counting. But they’ve become more like roommates than soul mates with the passing of time, and Christina misses the flirting, the passion, and feeling desired by the man she fell in love with.

Is it possible to get the spark back? Or once the heat dies out, is it gone for good?

Will she succeed in freezing out her husband, or will Chance win her over, get past the defenses she’s put in place, and remind her that they belong together forever?

Christina

My husband used to feel like my soul mate, but lately we’ve felt more like roommates.

And when I catch him servicing himself rather than making love to me, it solidifies it for me.

Our spark is gone, our romance is over. We’re co-parents living under the same roof, nothing more. Capable of raising four kids and one wild doodle, but incapable of keeping our marriage—or a single goldfish—alive.

But when he tries to push past all those walls I build up in between us to keep my heart safe—all the ways I try to make sure he knows what he’s missing—I start to remember what it feels like to be loved by him.

I might not win this battle.

Chance

My wife is punishing me for something. Keeping me at arm’s length, locking me out and freezing me out, but I’ll wear her down.

I know what we have is forever, but she needs to be reminded that we work just as well together now as we ever have, even if life looks a little different now than it did back then. Our love story isn’t over yet.

I launch a plan to win her over, recreating some of our favorite dates from when we were young, but nothing goes according to plan.

Over my dead body am I losing the woman of my dreams, the mother of my children, my wife.

Let the battle of wills commence.

Maddie is an elder millennial who writes contemporary romance books that focus on relatable characters you’ll fall for, journeys you’ll root for and spice you’ll melt for. She’s awful at social media and talking in the third person, but she’s less slightly terrible at writing spicy romance.

When she isn’t at her keyboard from dark to dark, she’s usually blasting music that hasn’t been cool for fifteen years, or curling up with a book, her pups and the book boyfriend of the day, or her very real (and very understanding) husband of over a decade.

Wow, this book really hit home….being a married millennial for 17 years and having been through what the characters in this story go through, I really felt it. Life gets busy and the romance in a marriage fades away. Well this is a cute story about just that and how they work to rekindle their flame again.

It’s a different type of romance novel than your typical “girl meets boy” or friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, etc. These characters have already been married for so long and have an established relationship, know eachother’s turn ons and quirks.

There’s great millennial humor and the spicy scenes were fire. I loved seeing how the characters developed and how their relationship evolved through the book.
And honestly there were SO many scenes where I thought “wow, this could be describing my life” haha. Totally relatable and a good read.

I read an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.

Let start off by saying Maddie never fails to amaze me with her writing. I’ve cried, blushed and felt every single emotion. I ate this up and I loved every single second of it. The easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given a book. This was a spicy but heartbreaking story about two people in a real marriage with real problems. I felt like I was in the story with them.

“To the people who look for the good in the world. May you keep finding more and more of it.”

Chrissy felt like a breath of fresh air. She was real and every single one of her emotions were valid, and I will protect this woman at all costs! I wanted to cry, scream and giggle with her. I loved her stubborn and fiery attitude, she knew what she wanted and she got it. Understanding her story made me fall more and more in love with her.
Chance made me feel things, LIKE HELLOOOOO!!! I loved his soft side, he really is such a loveable character. He tries so hard, slightly clueless but honestly he’s such a sweetheart that I didn’t even notice. He is the PERFECT example of a loving husband and father. I will say, he is 100% a new book boyfriend… the things that man can do phew. He really was so determined to win his woman back, you could feel the love through the pages.

“You’re it for me Di”

I loved understanding both POV’s and seeing real marriage problems that are worked through!! As much as there is miscommunication, the way it is worked through felt so natural. This was spicy but my oh my it was the perfect amount and i couldn’t get enough of it. I also LOVED our besties!!! (Can’t wait to devour Ellie’s books!!!) The pacing was perfect and I read this book in one sitting. I can’t believe I didn’t pick this up sooner. I haven’y stopped thinking about them. Also the way I was sobbing to blushing was crazy but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I loved being on this healing journey with Chrissy and Chance. Maddie, you are amazing <3

What to expect -

✨He’s determined to win her back
✨Golden retriever hero
✨Feisty heroine
✨No third act break up

“I love you so much more after all these years together. This life we’ve built together? These kids you’ve given me? Out world is everything to me.”

“When you marry someone, you take all the best parts of them, and all the worst parts of them. And they take all of yours, too. And together, you hope that each other’s good makes the other’s bad a little less, and you try like hell to make sure each other survives as best as possible, and if you’re lucky, you have a lot of fun along the way.”

“All I’ve ever wanted is to be enough for you. To be what you wanted. You’ve always been the one for me, but when I thought you didn’t want me anymore, that stung.”

“It’s not her against the world. It’s not me versus her. It’s us, as a team. I’ll never let either of us be anything but one-half of us ever again.”

“That’s a title she’s had for nine years now. But this morning, she’s earned a new trophy to add to our mental shelf. Wonder Wife of the year.”

Idk …

Honestly, I’ve never read a book where I actually loathed the FMC. Her way of thinking and how she was acting truly irritated my inner soul. I understand we all have insecurities that bother us and make us feel a certain way, but her entire attitude and placing all the blame on her husband made me want to karate chop her in the throat for real. I literally cheered when the MMC put her in her place! 👏🏽

I was totally in love with her husband Chance. A true lovable MMC. He did everything for his family. The crappy part about all of this, is if they would’ve just communicated they could’ve avoided all the drama. Only gave it 3 stars because I loved the MMC but the FMC truly destroyed the story, had she had a better attitude than thinking she’s all that it would’ve been way better 🤷🏽‍♀️

I loved this book. The characters are relatable and you can feel what they are going through. My heart felt the pain Chrissy was in over Chance’s actions and Chance made me root for him to get her back. This book made me laugh, remember the first decade of my own marriage and how difficult it can be, and really feel the love Chrissy and Chance have for each other and their family. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Wow! I devoured this book in a day!!! I could not stop reading! It brought me through all the emotions…I was giggling, frustrated, teary eyed, and everything in between! This story is one that is relatable on many levels. It’s a beautiful story & a real relationship issue that isn’t spoken about nearly enough. The author does a beautiful job of telling each side to the story & has you rooting for the characters all throughout. I can’t wait to continue the series & to read more from Madison!

Madison Myers is incredible at writing realistic characters. And THANK GOD I am finally seeing characters that are not barely legal.
This book will hit home for new parents, parents of multiple kids, and married couples that have packed schedules. I highly recommend this book if you need a jump into romance that’s not all hot all the time. These characters are flawed and realistic. I think that’s my favorite part!

I got the chance to read this as an ARC Reader in exchange for an honest review. I loved it! There are aspects of this book that are just so real for long term married couples. The spice is very good. I was totally routing for the MMC and I bet you will too ❤️

This felt so realistic to me! As a newer wife (married almost 2 years) my biggest fear is that one day we would feel like roommates and this book had me really sit and think about if I am doing everything I can as a wife or if I’m only seeing the bad in everything. And in all truth made me see my husband in a different light (I already thought my man was perfect but after this book I definitely see him a the definition of a wonderful and perfect husband for me). Anyways onto the review:

I loved this story. I thought again it felt very realistic and the characters didn’t feel completely fictional. I laughed so much during the game night scene and all the fish fiascos. I really enjoyed this book by Madison! Super easy read but I don’t recommend reading at work the smut in this is 10/10 very spicy but so so so worth it!

This book was absolutely perfect! I was immediately dragged into Chrissy and Chance’s story. I felt for Chrissy and all that she was going through and I also sympathized with Chance the whole way through! This author wrote her characters so well that you couldn’t help but root for the two of them to be together. Chance is absolutely a top tier book boyfriend (husband😉) and I loved him so much! Chrissy was so relatable and seeing her grow and fall back into love with herself, life, and husband was beautiful. This story was just EVERYTHING! I cannot say enough words about how much I loved it. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it makes me want to remake 10 things I hate about you into 10 things I love about The Roommate Syndrome. I will forever recommend this book now and will also proceed to talk about it incessantly to anyone and everyone until they tell me to stfu! This book had me in tears the same way Henry Spencer did on the first and last episode of Psych when he said “How many hats are in the room?”

To the author: You are amazing, fantastic, and an unbelievable writer! I love your story and I can’t wait to read more of your books!!❤️

The roommate syndrome

I was really looking forward to this one as from the synopsis out sounded like issues that a lot of married couples go through, but it was so slow. The internal monologues went on for ever and i ended up skimming a lot of the book. Overall it was ok, maybe i expected too much.

My first DNF. At chapter 5, the FMC was so annoying I couldn't follow the story. She's a stereotypical millennial but in the worst way, idk if being younger made me not relate to her story, but she talked to the reader like she was in a talk show and I hated that.

4.5 Stars Rounded up

This is a new author for me and I had no expectations going into other than being intrigued by the description, and curious how the author would write romance on what some would consider a “boring topic”, loss of intimacy in a marriage.

First, I felt like I was reading parts of my own marriage. Being in a long term relationship there are so many highs and lows and getting stuck in a rut where you think the worst of someone and can’t see the good anymore was so relatable for me. There were several moments in the book I was nearly brought to tears because it reminded me of times I felt the same way the FMC did (body issues after having children, feeling down about ones self, wondering if my husband was still attracted to me, etc) and it was nice to see representation of that. Thankfully my partner and I are in an amazing place now but this book touches on the real and raw emotions couples go through in the day to day life struggles, and it was handled with such care.

I really enjoyed the authors style of writing. She is extremely witty and funny and it was easy to read and follow along with and kept my attention from start to finish. I absolutely LOVED chance and his humor and the way he loves all parts of Christina and the way he handled the *situation* once it was discussed.
I also loved there was no 3rd act breakup because I’m sick of that shit in books 🙃

The .5 is for personal preference, there were times I was screaming “JUST TALK TO HIM!” haha but mainly because I saw so much of myself in Christina’s character and I wanted her to do what I would do in that situation and I wanted her to lay into him more in the beginning of the book (🫣 IYKYK)

I’m really excited to read more from this author and to continue this series.

I can’t tell you how much I loved this!

Honest, raw. emotional and oh so real. A story that shows how marriage is a rollercoaster of a ride and how much communication is absolutely vital. That even the best of marriages can go through a rough patch when assumptions are made, but also that there’s no such thing as a perfect person. That humans are flawed, can be stubborn and only view things through their own eyes at times.

I really enjoyed the fact in that Chrissy was so ‘flawed’. With her stubbornness (although created from being hurt) actually gave the book balance for me. How someone can make assumptions and be forced to look at their own behaviour and reactions. So many stories focus on the man being the ‘problem’, whereas this was very good at showing how sometimes being a strong female can actually make you blinkered to your own faults. The author was so good at making Chrissy realise that her own actions and reactions contributed to ‘the straw that broke the camels back’ as it were. Chrissy recognised this over time and then began to match Chances efforts to rekindling/saving their marriage equally….instead of it all being on him.

Chance I adored, he truly was a great mmc. That in a marriage you lean into fixing what’s broken, rather than lean away from the relationship.

This book encapsulated how a lack of communication can destroy a seemingly healthy marriage and how quickly smaller issues can snowball into something much bigger, but also how you can come out the other side. Although this is fictional, it is so true to life with the relationship and emotions it didn’t feel that way to me, it touched me personally and I enjoyed every word.

A Heartwarming and Relatable Read

A heartfelt, engaging story that had me hooked from start to finish.

The characters felt so real, especially the challenges they faced trying to balance life, love, and unexpected circumstances. I found myself nodding along to some of the dynamics between the main characters—it reminded me of how chaotic yet beautiful life can be when you’re juggling relationships, family, and responsibilities.

What stood out to me was the humor woven throughout the story. As a mum, I often feel like I’m living in a comedy routine with all the little mishaps that happen daily, so I appreciated how Madison Myers captured those lighthearted, laugh-out-loud moments while still delivering a story full of emotional depth.

It was a wonderful, feel-good book that I’d recommend to anyone looking for a relatable and heartwarming escape.

If you’re a busy parent like me, this book is perfect for those rare moments when you can sit down (or lay down) avoiding sleep and immerse yourself in someone else’s delightful chaos.

I was intrigued by the premise of the story, often feeling like a roommate myself with my spouse during this life stage with small children running around.

What frustrated me is that the wife seemed to put it all on the husband to come up with dates and childcare during their reset period. It takes two to tango. I know she was hurt and wanted to feel appreciated, but she should’ve put the effort in as well.

And why was she so hell bent on withholding sex from him? That punished her as well and sex is a great way to rebuild that intimacy with your partner she was looking for.

She took a while to be honest about her final straw (finding him in the bathroom) and once she did, he was able to explain and set things straight.

The wife rubbed me the wrong way but otherwise a cute read for parents with young children to remember to prioritize each other.

Honestly loved this book sooo much!
Such a good story that as a millennial, married woman really just hit, whether it be with laughter or tears or “oh… okay,” level mind blown. I love that a lot of it was based on real life experiences. I also could never have predicted the origin of her nick name. 😭😭 Like any debut novel, I did think there were a few moments here and that felt like something was missing (like a small detail or a back story), but not so much that you couldn’t continue. And let’s be honest, Madison writes A++ spice that made up for it! 🥵Coming from reading Madison’s more recent books, it is so cool to see where she started and how her writing has developed from here! Can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Chance was a real DADDY in the bedroom AND out omg
Wasn’t a fan of Chrissy. She blamed Chance for everything and why was he always the one taking care of the kids?!
I mean she goes for a night out and comes home to a messy house and him playing video games (for boys night btw)
Give him a break girl y’all got 4 kids that he’s taking care of so YOU can have a night out

Yeah he’s wrong for j@cking off to a pic of someone else. I’d be pissed too but the fact that it took her SO LONG to tell him. How can you be mad at someone and not even tell them what they did?! Like don’t want to fix your marriage or not??

As a married woman with multiple kiddos, this book was meant for me 😂 and dang it did not disappoint! It was so fun and cute (not to mention spicy 🌶️ 😉😉) but it gave me alllll the feels and hit me with real emotion. I felt like I was living in this story. I feel like I related to Chrissy more than any other character I’ve ever read. I just fell so in love with Chrissy and Chance ❤️ and I bet you would too. As a side note, reading this book actually legit helped my decade old marriage, so there’s that too 😉 definitely read this one!!

This book was one of my favorite reads ever. It made me FEEEL things.

In the first chapter alone, I was LOSING my mind. Did I want to cry? Laugh? Puke? LITERALLY ALL OF THEM IN THE BEST WAY.

I loved that this wasn't a cookie-cutter story. The characters really resonated with me and it was different to anything I have ever read. It was funnier, spicier and the goldfish moments had me DYING (if you know, you know).

I cannot wait to dive into the next two books in this series.

If you're looking for HEART and some serious HEAT, this author is DEFINITELY for you.

Nice story about a couple settled into decade long marriage with their brood of kiddo’s and after seeing husband knocking one out to a photo of another woman the h worries that husband doesn’t want her anymore and they’re living more like roommates.

Really liked the H character in this, actually disliked the h for about half the book she ripped the H for every little thing dispute him clearly trying desperately to save their marriage. She was way too high maintenance for me, she was less strong FMC and just annoying tbh

She redeemed herself towards the end thankfully

loved this book!

This was my second book by this author, and her writing style just resonates with me! I love the banter, passion, and spice that she writes so well. Chrissy is a strong, emotional woman, who gets in her own head sometimes and doesn’t know how to move forward. Chance is a loving man who isn’t sure what he did wrong, but is determined to fix it. I loved watching them navigate the challenges of parenthood and getting older (I LOVED the club that was “too loud” and the dance move that put both their backs out, lol). Can’t wait to read more from this author!

This book was beautifully descriptive and immersive. I had so much fun while reading it, I didn’t want it to end. It felt like I was right there with the characters, going through the chaos with them. I didn’t want to put the book down.
It’s hilariously relatable when it comes to being a millennial. I really enjoyed the jokes and subtle references.
Regarding spice, this was an absolute thigh-clencher of a book, iykyk.
What a lovely story. I’m jumping straight into book 2 of this series.

Honestly, I have never read as slow paced and repetative book as this one. It gets to a point where is boring it's the same sentences but turned around, meshed, shorter, longer versions and I couldn't wait to finish it but for the wrong reason.
I would give it a one star, but the writer has potential and I think she can do a lot better or she needs a better editor or something.

Devastating but heartwarming at the end

I went through so much heartache for this couple while reading this story. A husband who is trying so hard and a wife who just can't see the wonder of herself and what he sees in her. There was some humor that actually made me laugh out loud. I'm new to this author and can't wait to read more!
