Then - Madeleine Farmer, the world’s highest paid actor amongst other dignitaries, attends an event at The Novus Theatre in London to honour Dame Cynthia Seymour when all hell breaks loose in the proceedings.
Now - The Seven are the followers of notorious cult leader Patrick Nye and are standing trial at the Old Bailey accused of detonating two bombs at the Novus Theatre, killing 43 people and injuring countless others. All are pleading not guilty to the charges.
CPS lawyer Eve Wren is brought in to oversee aspects of the evidence for the potential trial of the century, hoping all bases are covered to assure a guilty verdict. The world is watching and will expect nothing less than a resounding guilty on all charges. Can Eve help deliver the justice the victims and their families richly deserve?

If you aren’t keen on cult books then I can reassure you that there is much less focus on the cult itself although obviously the events at the Novus are crucial. Instead, the novel focuses on the heartbreaking and moving emotions of the survivors and their families, their recollections of the events and of course, the drama, excitement and tension of the court case with the dramatic ins and outs of Eve’s inquiry. This is done really well and I enjoy how what Eve learns plays out as it’s so unexpected. Eve is tenacious, I like her as she’s honourable and prepared to go the extra mile. I’ll definitely want to continue reading the series and learning what happens to her next.

The pacing is a little inconsistent BUT what it does serve to achieve is make certain events stand out and almost jolt you. Some of Eve’s discoveries are explosive and it gets more and more intriguing and twisty with the mystery considerably deepening. There is a really good twist towards the end and some misdirection that I swallow hook, line and sinker! Well played! It maybe finishes a bit abruptly but the main focus is all about Eve and so it fits. I would have enjoyed more about the trial itself but maybe that will come in the follow up books.

Overall, enjoyable and entertaining.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Lake Union for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

ARC for review. To be published January 1, 2025.

Eve Wren takes a job as a lawyer with the Crown Prosecution Service after she is fired from her firm after doing the right thing….doesn’t she know there’s no place for that in the law?!?!!? (I’m a lawyer too.). She’s assigned to what is probably the biggest criminal trial seen in England in decades (because typically those in charge put the new kid on that. Happens all the time.)

The case? Cult leader (ooh, yeah!) Patrick Nye runs the Decorous cult, which is non-religious, anti-wealth and anti-Hollywood. He was thought dead for many years, but now he and six of his surviving followers are put on trial after detonating two bombs in a London theatre/celebrity event that killed forty-three and injured many others. The case against the defendants appears very clear until Eve finds evidence that calls everything into question. And she shoves it in a crate and sends it away like the last scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” never to be seen again, because these are crazy cult bombers and we want a conviction, right? Oh, not that good girl Eve!

Well, obviously I was interested in this book because of the cult, but, sadly, there was almost nothing about it in the book. There is a lot about a survivors group and all that is OK. Eve’s s little goody goody for my taste. I would definitely be one of those “bending the law the fit my needs” types. So it would likely be prison for me. I thought I had figured out two bad actors and I was wrong about both, so there’s that….I preferred the secondary characters to Eve.

This is meant to be the first in the Eve Wren series, I’m not sure I would read on. Nothing really distinguishes Eve from any other lawyer protagonist.

The Seven by Robyn Delvey

This story is about two bombings in London and the people who are on trial for it. They were instructed by their cult leader, Patrick Nye. However, there isn’t much cult information given here. That was why I was interested in the first place.

This was an average read and it will be a legal thriller series. Out now.

Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and Robyn Delvey for the opportunity.

When you turn Eat the Rich into Kill the Rich, the result would be this book. I loved all the different perspectives this book gave. We got the during, the trial/present, and then we got the perspective of some of the survivors and then a lawyer who is going over the unused evidence with a fine-tooth comb in case anything was missed. There was just so dang much going on, and it was fun watching everything fall into place at the end.

Following an unfair dismissal from her previous position, Eve Wren, a highly regarded criminal defense solicitor, is now employed by the CPS.  She has been unexpectedly summoned by her supervisor and informed of her reassignment from her current case to the Novus Theatre bombing case.

Fifteen months prior, a tragic incident occurred at the Novus Theatre in London during a black-tie dinner honouring Dame Cynthia Seymour, a celebrated Oscar-winning actress  Homemade bombs detonated, resulting in the loss of 43 lives among the 120 attendees.
Patrick Nye, a Californian native and the notorious leader of the non-religious movement known as The Decorous, along with six others, collectively referred to as The Seven, are currently standing trial.  The trial, which should have been simple, becomes complicated because all the accused pleaded not guilty, claiming a "loss of control." They argued that they had been provoked by the actions of others, namely, the theatre's guests. While it is anticipated that this defence will be unsuccessful, some unforeseen complexities also arose.

Eve's task is to carefully examine all unused evidence previously handled by a DO that is currently under investigation, ensuring that no information could potentially weaken the case against The Seven. Could she uncover something that might jeopardize the case?

This is a dual-timeline story that recounts the events at the Novus Theatre, the subsequent court case, and Eve's examination of the evidence.
A brilliant start to a new series, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book!

An engaging thriller packed with red herrings! 🔥

I was thoroughly impressed with this read as it captured my attention and made the perfect start to a brand new series. Delvey has crafted an enjoyable legal thriller which explored more of the out-of-court processes and I really liked this.

The book commenced with strength, and two big explosions, and it instantly drew me in. We were then transported to fifteen months post-incident as the trial begins. What I loved about this read was the constant flip between the past and the present which provided snippets at a time and kept me eagerly turning the page.

I was able to keep up with the plethora of characters and know who was who pretty quickly and I loved the multiple POVs. Eve was lovely and a very motivated character and I was really rooting for her to uncover the hidden proof.

I loved how we were taken across London, especially during some of the more action-packed and tense chapters. I had no idea where this book was unravelling to or who to trust, just like Eve, and I was constantly throwing theories as fast as Delvey threw in red herrings.

I didn’t predict the culprit until just before the revelation and I was quite surprised. The book was cleverly constructed and delivered.

I buddy read this with @mynextreads and we both enjoyed this book. We will be checking out book two in the Eve Wren series when it’s published. ❤️

This was my Amazon First Reads pick for January and I’m so glad this was my choice. I loved it! 😍

Okay, so apparently abrupt endings are a thing with this author.

The plot was good, although the plot line of wondering what one of the characters did that was so bad was incredibly tedious and ended up not even being a big deal.

There were a few parts that made me roll my eyes so hard it physically hurt.

However, I didn’t guess the final villain so it did a good job of keeping you guessing

Kindle edition

Amazon first reads for December. Slim pickings this month. The cover jumped out at me from the rest and I'm not really a fan of historicals or the others in the selection. This was a now and then legal thriller, involving a cult and a bombing. For the survivors it was facing betrayal and closure, for Eve it seemed to be a he said she said twice. Once at the beginning and then again at the end. Plenty of paranoia and miscommunication. Got a bit chaotic until John stepped in. Glad it turned out alright.

After catching a mistake in a colleague's work which nearly derails her career, Eve Wren finds herself working at the Crown Prosecution Service in London. Eve is keeping her head down at her new job, when she is suddenly taken off the case she was working on & moved to the biggest case at present. Cult leader Patrick Nye & his followers, known as 'The Seven', are standing trial after unexpectedly pleading not guilty to detonating a bomb in a London theatre killing 43 people.

Eve's job is to check that evidence deemed not relevant to the case has been correctly processed, but as she starts to work her way through the 10 boxes of evidence files, Eve finds evidence that has not been followed up properly or misclassified. After reporting this & trusting that it will be sorted, Eve realises she is being followed. Is someone trying to influence the trial or cause a mistrial?

I quite enjoyed this one. An interesting case, several twists & turns & a nice misdirection made this a solid legal thriller to start off my New Year's reading. The main character, Eve, is a little bland but nice enough. I'd be happy to read more if there are more books in the future. 3.5 stars (rounded up)

My thanks to NetGalley & publisher, Thomas & Mercer, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This is the first book in a new series about Eve Wren called The Seven by Robyn Delvey. I received a copy from Thomas and Mercer via Netgalley. It came out yesterday!

This book is a gripping legal thriller that dives into the high-stakes world of justice, deception, and moral dilemmas. Eve Wren, a rookie lawyer for the Crown Prosecution Service, faces the trial of a lifetime: prosecuting Patrick Nye, a charismatic cult leader accused of orchestrating a deadly bombing in London. As the trial unfolds, Eve is confident the evidence will speak for itself—until she stumbles upon a discovery that threatens to unravel the entire case.

Delvey crafts a fast-paced narrative filled with tension, complex characters, and shocking twists, keeping you on the edge of your seat. This book is a brilliant exploration of justice and the lengths one must go to uncover it.

Loved every minute of it, and I can't wait for book two!

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gobsmacking book

where to start with this one

courtroom drama
hostage situation
bombs exploding
massacres

this is the first book in a new series and i have to say its high energy and packed with action... i cant wait to read the next book in this series to see if it can keep up the high octane action

theres a slow build up to it all with different before and after chapters with different characters but on the whole it keeps moving you forward to the sense of horror and betrayal that happens/happened

its a refreshing change to find a new author that you want to know everything about their style of writing and genre and i look forward to reading more from this author

Story is about our hero(ine), Eve who has recently been a scapegoat for a cock up at her legal firm which terminates her employment.
Along comes one of the biggest trials in recent legal history and so the CPS decide to employ her and give her a key, pivotal role. I found this a little odd, but what do I know? Must have been a glowing reference even though she was fired for incompetence, which we know is untrue, but the CPS don't.

Anyway, the story is set in two timelines and focuses on the survivors of the bombing. There is little about the cult and almost nothing of the trial which was one of the reasons I started reading, the other being slim pickings last month on Amazon 'first reads'.

There is nothing particularly wrong with the story, just did not grip me. To be fair, didn't bore me either so I humbly opine 3 stars.
I note that it is only the first instalment of Eve's exploits, but I am not inspired to read further.

Wow! This is the first book from this author, and I will definitely be watching for her next one. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, but the key one is a young lawyer, Eve Wren, who was fired from her previous position because she pointed out an error made by a superior and got blamed for it. In her new role as a Crown Prosecution lawyer, she is put on the high profile case of a cult leader and his followers and tasked with reviewing the material deemed not relevant for the actual case. There are plenty of twists and red herrings, that kept me guessing, and the resolution was not what I expected. As an American, some of the terminology (such as Crown Prosecution Service) was unfamiliar, but it did not hinder my understanding. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes legal thrillers.

Please note: I received a copy from Goodreads and Thomas & Mercer Publishing in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

3.5 stars, rounding up.
I was expecting to read a novel about a cult or at least one act that the cult committed, but this was more of a legal thriller that was more about correct evidence and feelings of survivors. I ended caring very little about the cult and why they did what they did because they weren't covered very much. Instead this novel focused on Eve and how she is trying to do her best to be ethical after being falsey accused before. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, it does make it hard to make a series (as intended with this book) without focusing on the case. The person I was most interested in was Brandon, the cult member who flipped.
Thank you to NetGalley, Robyn Delvey the author, and Brilliance Publishing for my advance copy of this book.

This was a book whose story pulled me in right from the outset, and I was keen to see where that story would ultimately go. While there was a lot of potential with this one, especially with the trial-based aspect of the story, in the end I felt like there wasn't enough excitement or intrigue throughout the middle portions of the book to really keep me invested. The ending was pretty damn good though, especially the latter few chapters. I also loved the female lead who was a character you definitely wanted to root for. I just wanted more story involving the actual trial and more understanding surrounding why the antagonists did what they did.

Since this wasn’t a normal read for me, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have no idea if the author got everything about the courts correct but I thought it was interesting especially that someone would be hired to go through the unused evidence.

I liked the way Eve conscientiously worked her way through all of the documents; however, I thought she was a little premature putting the blame where she did instead of thinking about everyone involved.

I was totally wrong about the cult person but right about the rest. I liked the dynamics of the characters and the plot. I’m looking forward to the second.

This book was soo good! I enjoyed the twisty plot and unforgettable characters. I loved Eve. She was a great mc, I liked how she didn't take any bs from the detectives and kept to her gut about the phone. I don't normally read law / courthouse based plots, but i really enjoyed this one. It had so many twists, and I thought I'd figured out who it was as the second in command with Nye, but I was so wrong. It was easy to read and follow as well.

4.5*

I love a cult thriller, which is what attracted me to this book. It is a legal thriller written from the perspective of a CPS solicitor doing a case review, making it slightly different to the usual legal thriller.  The story is told on dual timelines - the day of the bombing and the present day, during the trial.  The case was interesting and there were several twists along the way. I thought I had it sussed but I was very wrong! I hope that this will become a series.

I enjoyed the narration by Moira Quirk.

This is the first in a series that I will definitely be reading more of. It is a legal thriller following the trial of the decade. The Decorous Cult are responsible for two bombs in a theatre killing 43 people and injuring dozens more. Eve Wren is the protagonist, a lawyer working for the CPS and she is assigned mid trial to make sure all the unused evidence is logged correctly to ensure this ‘bang to rights’ trial secures all seven members standing trial receive the guilty verdict.

Patrick Nye, the cult leader and his followers are the defendants, referred to as The Seven. Told on two timelines, now is during the trial and then is 15 months earlier when the bombings in the Novus Theatre took place.

I honestly could not get enough of this book, the characters, the writing, the story it was all five star for me and I really cannot wait for the next instalment. My only complaints were I would have liked to have read more chapters on the trial, and I found the ending really abrupt. This author has definitely found a new fan in me. Roll on August 2025 for the next book ‘The Bait’.
