Wolf's Pride #1

Pride's Run

Rate this book
Seventeen year old Pride is a tracker—a werewolf with a hunger for blood. Taught to trick and to lure, she is the perfect killing machine.

Kept leashed in the cellar by a master who is as ruthless as he is powerful, Pride dreams of freedom, of living a normal life, but escape from the compound is near impossible and disobedience comes with a price.

When she learns her master intends to breed her she knows she has to run.

Pride soon learns if she is to survive in the wild, she must trust in the boy who promises her freedom, the same boy she was sent to hunt.

With life and death hanging in the balance the two find themselves on the run from the Paranormal Task Force—officers who shoot first and ask questions later—as well as her master’s handlers.

Can Pride flee the man who has held her captive since birth and find sanctuary in the arms of a boy who has captured her heart? Or will her master find her first?

Pride is a tracker, kept in a cellar by her master. She always hopes to one day escape and find freedom, so when her master plans to force her to breed to tame her, Pride knows she must run. As pride is on the run with a boy she feels a connection to but also the boy she was sent to track, she not only has to be on the look out for her masters handler and tracker but also the Paranormal Task Force, who is trained to shoot first ask later.

I really enjoyed this story and am glad to be a part of the blog tour for this book. I loved the plot and I loved the characters. This was a quick read for me. I didn't want to put it down!

The characters were great. I really liked Pride and Logan's characters. Pride, was kind of confused. She didn't really know who she was. All she knew was that she wanted to escape from her master and try and save the rest of the wolves from their torture. I loved that about her, the need to survive. She had been stuck in that cellar all her life and knew nothing of how to survive in the outside world when it came down to it. But all she knew was that she needed to run. To save herself and the others. She was so awkward around Logan, that it became cute. I really liked that. Logan, was probably my fave. Mr. Alpha. He was smart and strong, and you could tell that there might be some kind of developing relationship between the two. One of my favorite things about the book. The relationship with each other was so cute but you could also tell that they each had been through so much.

Stone was confusing to me. I didn't like him in the beginning, but as the book progressed I didn't know what to think. Still a question mark there. The master. I can't wait to see how things play out with him in the next book.

The ending! I really liked the ending, but it was such a huge cliff hanger. I'm mad. I hope a lot of things unfold in the next book and answer all my unanswered questions!

Overall this book was amazing! I am so glad I found out about this book and got to be apart of the blog tour. If you love werewolves, with action and romance. This is a book for you!

Pride's Run is deep, dark and a tad bit disturbing. I really enjoyed it! Pride is an amazing character that is a complete joy to read about. Her struggles with her "flaws" and trust are realistic. The connection between Pride and Logan is also realistic, slow and iffy, not rushed or forced. Logan is kind and caring when it comes to Pride. Pride's Run has twists and turns that you never expected, keeping you on the edge of your seat the entire book. There is never a dull moment and I'm anxious to continue Pride's story!

Original Review @ Naomi’s Reading Palace

I have had Pride's Run sitting on my kindle for so long and I finally decided it was time to get into it. It has been a long time since I have read a shifter book and I enjoyed diving into Pride’s dark and twisted world as she tried to make her escape.

I liked Pride; she was a determined girl who wants to break away from her master and where she has been confined all of her life. It’s a harsh way for any person to grow up in and it was sad to see the inhumane way they were all treated; kept confined and treated like animals. When an opportunity presented itself, I was glad to see her grab hold of it considering the danger she was in.

When Pride got away she was running with Logan, the boy who happened to be her assignment. I liked watching these two cautiously get to know one another. It’s extremely hard for Pride to trust anyone, so I liked the gentle way that Logan showed her that he would help and protect her. Logan was a really sweet guy but he’s also a very strong and dominant alpha. I could see that his attraction was growing even though Pride was oblivious to it, because she feels that boys never look at her.

Pride’s Run was an action packed read that constantly had me on edge because of the danger continuously following them. Pride had to learn how to survive in the cold mountains and to use her inner animal to her advantage. The romance was slow building and there were a few twists thrown in to keep you guessing how it will all turn out. The book ends on a bit of a cliff hanger, and the next books aren’t available at this time. I hope I get to find out what happens, because I was getting drawn into the dangerous and intense end to the story and I need to see how Pride got out of that situation!

I heard about this book via word of mouth and am so glad I picked it up.

Cat Kalen pens a riveting tale, a YA thriller featuring werewolves on the run.

She captures the teen voice and angst perfectly, and creates a page-turning, emotional read.

TLDR Recap:

Pride, a 17 year old werewolf, is pretty much a slave. Kept in a cage, she is only allowed out into the world when her master says so. When an opportunity arises for her to gain her freedom- something she wants more than anything- Pride takes it. But she is being hunted- and it’s not just her master who’s after her…Pride’s Run is a GraveTells “must read!”

Thoughts:

Pride has lived her whole life in captivity. Her sole purpose is to use her werewolf abilities to track, kill, or capture the targets her master sends her after. The rest of her life is spent training for missions and being locked in a cage like an animal. Parentless and without any siblings, Pride has no family to comfort her. The only people she has are a few fellow werewolf friends who are also prisoners. She can shift at will, but on every full moon, she is forced to change and has no control over her wolf.

Days before the next full moon, Pride receives some terrible news- her master will be forcing her to spend the night of the full moon in Stone’s cage to mate. Stone is not like the other captives, however. He’s several years older than Pride, and is an aggressive, almost cruel, alpha male. Horrified and angry, Pride knows she has to find a way to escape her master’s estate. When she is sent on a new recruiting mission, Pride takes advantage of the situation and bolts. She meets up with Logan, the werewolf target Pride was supposed to capture, and knows she’ll need this alpha’s help if she wants to outrun her master, as well as the PTF (the Paranormal Task Force, which is a group of people who hunt werewolves.)

Pride was such an enjoyable character to read about. I love that she was not only strong, but intelligent, too. She has plenty of reasons to want to kill her master, but she knows she has to bide her time and not act impulsively. She thinks before she does anything stupid, and I admire that about her. There are so many heroines in the YA genre who don’t have this trait, so it was refreshing to read about someone who knew when they had to remain calm, even though they didn’t want to, because it was the smart thing to do. And though initially she didn’t want Logan’s help, she realized and accepted the fact that she needed someone with his knowledge of the outside world if she was going to survive. I like that she kept her attitude throughout all the years she was kept a prisoner, and that she never let herself be “broken.”

And speaking of Logan, can I just say how much I love him? He’s a sweet guy, but also protective and possessive. He had to earn Pride’s trust (as she does NOT trust easily) but he never lets her down. The two of them make an amazing, powerful couple. Pride may be a trained killer, but when it comes to relationships, she’s kind of lost. It was amusing to read about her attempts to sort out and manage the new, foreign feelings she developed for Logan.

Pride’s Run was an awesome book, with intriguing characters and the perfect amount of action and romance! It was a great book to kick off the series with.

Memorable Quotes:

The pewter in his eyes bleeds into his inky black pupils and when he looks deep into my eyes, I get the sense that he can see past the fur, the eyes, the girl, and see into my soul, and can see how damaged I really am.

Everything in the way he touches me, and everything in the way he looks at me has shattered my last vestige of control and I know in this instant, life as I know it will never be the same again.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Pride’s Run was a fun, entertaining read. Cat Kalen is a talented writer, and it clearly shows in this book. I can’t wait to start Pride Unleashed, the next book in the series. If you’re a fan of YA, and like reading about werewolves, you have to check this one out! It’s a GraveTells must read!

My Review:
PRIDE'S RUN is a great paranormal YA. I have a fondness for shifter books, but don't actually read that many in the YA category. This book caught my eye with the synopsis right away. Usually shifters are at the top of the food chain in paranormal books. They're faster, more dangerous, and they are only part human. PRIDE'S RUN takes a look at the other side of the coin, where shifters are subjugated and controlled by humans.

In fact, PRIDE'S RUN draws some disturbing parallels to human trafficking and the way that people can be used as property to those rich enough and lacking morality. Pride is a young woman who's been born into captivity and has never known anything other than the brutality and indifference of her master. He uses her as an assassin that his targets never see coming, mostly because of her youth and pretty face.

Cat Kalen's characters are ruthless and lack any kind of childhood, and yet both Pride and her nemesis at her master's compound have a certain vulnerability. Despite the fact that they live in an unconscionable world, Pride has a family in some of the other werewolves held with her. The pace of PRIDE'S RUN is frenetic and intense, taking place in present tense, yet the reader can still get a sense of how Pride has survived for as long as she has, the friends that she has, and the events that have shaped her personality.

What I liked about Kalen's plot, characters and setting was that it combined the best parts of a paranormal coming-of-age with an urban fantasy. PRIDE'S RUN was edgy and dangerous, with disturbing events right from the start. But, that wasn't all of the story. With the romantic bond that forms between Pride and Logan, (which doesn't over take the story, well done) and Pride's initial fear of her fellow werewolf enemy, Stone, which later turns into confusion over some of his actions, this is a well-rounded novel.

Though I do think that PRIDE'S RUN could be inappropriate for younger or less advanced YA readers, anyone who enjoys a paranormal read involving werewolf shifters should not be disappointed.

4.5/5 for plot
4.5/5 for characters

I value my sleep and will only very rarely give-up my 8 hours of rest for a book. A sacrifice that I was more than happy to make for Pride's Run. The title might have you thinking "cats" but don't be fooled; this story is 100% werewolf! The main character's point of view is raw and primal. I didn't have any problems seeing the wolf in her, that's for sure! Be prepared to be swept off your feet by Cat Kalen's writing! You will not be able to put Pride's Run down until the end. I sure couldn't!

Pride's nitty gritty point of view is mesmerizing. I loved every second that I spent inside her head. For the first part of the book she's more animal than human. Kalen does an amazing job of conveying how wild this seventeen year old wolf really is. Pride's running on pure survival instincts. I felt like I was right there beside her through every step of her refusal to be broken by her master. What a horrible life to be born into! Yet, somehow, Pride never looses hope. Such an unbreakable spirit! In the second half of the novel she becomes more human than she's ever been. It's an enlightening yet immensely scary process. Thank goodness for Logan!

The plot line of this book is pretty straight forward. Pride and Logan are running for their lives while leaning to trust each other because if they want to survive, they will need each other's help. The alpha male totally throws Pride off of her game. I liked how intuitive Logan is. Even though he's big and strong he's also capable of being equally as gentle and kind. He quickly realizes how broken Pride is and, as a result, handles her like you would a china doll. Logan also rebels against the norm. I really enjoyed his blatant disregard of werewolf stereotypes. He throws tradition into the wind and instead, does whatever it takes. Good for him! Pride's no ordinary girl and it'll take an extraordinary boy to win her over. Luckily for her, Logan's up to the task.

The majority of this novel is all about the characters but the ending is a shocker and leaves room for Kalen to expand Pride's universe by tenfold. Pride's Run is perfect for readers who prefer the animal side of the characters in shifter fiction. I look forward to seeing where Kalen takes us in Pride Unleashed.

The characters were thoroughly written and there's a plot twist (or two, I guess?) that make you do a double take, but all in all this is just a solid lead into the next book.

Pride, named for being her parents' "pride and joy" - this is explained multiple times always thinks of herself as a runt and is therefore unworthy. But, she's a smart girl: she knows when to be submissive and when to give it her all. Although young in years (17) she is quiet mature, having lived through the murder of both her parents and endless days of torture, she is always plotting her escape. When the opportunity presents itself, it seems a little too convenient (she was going to be forced to mate), but because of the circumstances, things seem legit.

Overall, I liked the details and being able to see the inner workings of Pride's mind. It was nice to see her bloom and break down her barriers. The two little twists at the end were nice too. I felt that the story was a bit too short for my liking, but I suppose if it was any longer the author would have to include the 2nd book.

Lastly, I think there were some editing problems - sentences that stopped halfway through thoughts. They would go. Something like this. I didn't mind it so much, though it was irritating, but it definitely ruined the flow.

Pride's Run begins with Pride being help captive by her Master. She's not the only one being held though. There are several of them like her, and when she finally gets the last straw she realizes she must get out before it's too late.

That proves harder than she thought, and she ends up finding an ally named Logan along the way. However, Logan is also keeping secrets, and as they continue on their journey they must come to trust each other before it is too late.

Pride's Run starts off very interesting. It was something new and fresh, and I just adored it. However, when it came to Pride and Logan I had conflicted feelings. I didn't really feel much of a connection between them. It was hard for me to understand it.
Then there was the issue with Stone that didn't make a lot of sense to me either.

Other than that I really enjoyed this story. It had a very fierce heroine that I truly admired, and I enjoyed reading this one.

My thoughts:
I truly enjoyed this book. The characters are well developed and easy to invest in. The story is wonderfully written and nicely edited. Cate Kalen has a way with words and the ability to put the reader on the edge of their seat. I never would have guessed that this was a debut novel, this is quality writing!
Pride and Logan are both fantastic characters, you can't help but fall in love with them. Stone, now he's another story; as a reader, I both loved and hated him depending upon where I was at in the book. Cate Kalen has filled this story with emotional turmoil and you ride that roller coaster of heartache, sacrifice, desire, longing, fear, and hope on every page. A fantastic addition to YA paranormal. Don't miss out on this one. I am barely able to wait for the second installment of Pride's story!

I didn't even make it through the first chapter of this book. I HATE books about slavery, torture, and other forms of subjugation/ victimization. That's exactly what this one is about. Eventually, the werewolf teen girl escapes and is on the run from the drug lord who held and abused her, but I didn't make it to that part. Yuck!

Classic YA. Love triangles, overwhelming hormones, and unrealistic dramatics.

That being said, it was somewhat decent for a YA novel and I may read the next one just because I’m grateful for a paranormal romance with NO FREAKIN VAMPIRES THANK THE LORD.

Still not sure how they call themselves werewolves when they never actually turn into wolves, just humans with long teeth and thick skin (like really? Wow...). That whole aspect was super lame.

A story of turmoil and strength. Pride is not to be underestimated and learns just what her worth is. Along side an unlikely ally, Logan teaches her all what her wolf is capable of outside of the captivity she has always known. The story continues in book two and looking forward to it

Very boring for huge chunks. I also couldn't tell what they were supposed to be when they "shaded" - wolves? Hybrids? Hairier humans? It's not clear.

So I read the blurb of this book and the words popping into my head were 'thrill', 'trauma', 'escape' and 'hunt.' All of which are pretty promising for a book to have...Four star material? And then of course the word 'romance' cropped up...made me think that maybe, this book had what it takes to get up into the Hollywood star of fame region; Completely legendary.
So, obviously, I started reading it, and realized that looks really can be deceiving...
First page in, hope is still shinning in my eyes, first and second paragraph, the hope and anticipation is growing, and I'm starting to imagine this book up on the same shelves as Jen and Suzanne. And then I read the third paragraph. I kid you not, almost cried. (I realize how this makes me sound, you probably all have images in your heads of a nerdy girl, hair in bunchies, with no friends or social life...oh well, YOU GUYS CAN BE MY SOCIAL LIFE :)) Where was I...oh yea, my hopes and dreams were just crushed. She wants to be 'a normal 17-year-old girl.' Where have I heard that before...Twilight, The Reaping, Sweet Evil, Hex Hall, Mythos Academy, need I go on? I'm sorry, but that cliche just pisses me the hell off.
The heroine however, is kinda bad ass. She's making people scared with her 'death glare'... something I'm really jealous of seeing as whenever I glare, I'm told I look 'cute,' not really what I was going for. She's all about 'playing the game' and basically owning the shit out of everyone around her. 10 points for Pride :)She's also proud.(shocker.)But she fights for what she wants and doesn't see an amazingly attractive guy and instantly fall into his arms, she makes him earn that privilege. And thank God she's not 'gifted' in some way as I'm getting tired of people being able to control wind or read minds or even magically block her boyfriend from reading her mind...it's just weird. (excluding the fact that she can turn into a big scary animal at will...) She's relatively normal as far as shape shifters go and actually relies on intellect rather than her 'gift.'
Chapter 2, enter annoying cliche number two. She wants to go where the 'wolves run free.' I'm really not a fan of far away promised lands. They irk me, just look at how it turned out for Moses. (Not great BTW.)
Then there's the foreshadowing, could she mention how impossible escape is any more times...trust me, it's be a tough challenge.
STONE, now he's interesting! He's not the 'leading man' but wow. He's actually got some depth, hidden motives and a 'broken' mind to go with it all! He's also a suspected psychopath/killer/future boyfriend/rapist...Maybe there's a reason why he didn't fit the role of the 'leading man'
So earlier I said this book might have it all, I'm ten percent through...there are wolves, illegal immigrants, drugs, forced breeding, slaves, assassination, unanswered questions and the always present hope of escape. So yea, it has it all.
Extra 5%, there's now a hostage situation and a chance for that escape... I stand corrected, now it has it all.
ENTER STEROID INDUCED BODY GUARDS, well, I didn't see it coming at least. ;)
LOGAN, now he is beautiful, beautiful and hot and fit and...beautiful. Why she thinks he's an 'obstacle' is beyond me, distraction I could understand, never an obstacle...unless she's planning on rugby tackling said obstacle to the ground and just lying on top of him for a while...yep, definitely a distraction.
The most annoying thing in this book.. she thinks that she's a runt, even though she's been told otherwise by many many people, many many times...so stubborn :(
So it all sounds good and dandy...and it is, it was a fun (albeit short read) but it was just so amazingly predictable that i ended up high fiving myself for my oracle status by the end of the book. The twists were in the roller coaster, there were just five warning signs in neon lights making sure we knew about them.
I'd recommend it for a light read but if you want emotion and suspense and hidden suprises...don't bother.

Pride's Run feels like it's two different books mashed up together. There's the part, which is about Pride, our kick-butt heroine, and her life as a captive Lupher in a drug-lord's Compound. And there's the second part, the majority, where Pride plays second fiddle to a stereotypical YA alpha-male dude who irked me to no end.

I really liked the Pride I got to know in captivity - she's smart, sassy, and looks out for her cell-mates. She might not be the strongest Lupher, but she can outthink most of her opponents, the most dangerous of whom is Stone, her once-friend who has been broken by the Master. Pride and Stone share a unique ability to telepathically communicate when not 'shading', but since becoming the Master's favourite, Stone has become violent and angry around Pride. Pride is strong without being amazing at everything, and is determined not only to one day escape, but to come back for her cell-mates. Her inevitable escape leads her to Logan, a mysterious lone alpha Lupher who helps her survive.

"It's crazy how beautiful he is."

The point when Pride and Logan meet marks where my enjoyment of the novel began wavering. It wasn't so much that I didn't like the romance (although it's so stock-standard I struggled to keep invested in it), it was that Logan inexplicably and frequently disarmed Pride to the point where she couldn't move, speak or think. Which is silly, really. It's explained that he has this affect because a) he's an alpha, and b) because he's the only non-captive Lupher Pride has ever met, but her inability to function around him got annoying very quickly. Coupled with the numerous times we were reminded just what a perfect specimen of teen-hunk he is (because all the boys in YA land are unbelievably hot), the silly romantic subplot ruined the second half of the book for me.

The latter parts of the novel also didn't really match up with the Pride I had met in the first - she's suddenly forgotten about her companions back in the Compound, lost all her agency, and has generally become this pathetic mess of a girl that shivers or stops breathing or experiences alarming hot flushes any time Logan gets within 10 paces of her. She's also unexpectedly naive about relationships, which I understand, and desire (and sex), which I didn't understand. I chalked it up to the usual way that YA is written, where the female has to be naive and completely unexperienced so she can be unduly impressed any time anything happens.

The writing style took a while to get used to. The author likes to uses too many adjectives for my liking. Logan's gaze is "intense, penetrating", he looks "fierce and carnal" on one page and "fierce and deadly" a few pages after, and almost every noun is preceded by an adjective. It just got tiring for me, sometimes I want a knife to be a knife. There is also a lack of finesse in the plot progression - although there are twists and surprises in the story, they fail to impress because of the heavy foreshadowing. Absolutely no plot element is introduced without first having been hinted heavily for at least a chapter. And the love triangle (which looks like it'll be annoying, considering how Pride has handled herself so far) was a sure-thing from early on.

Pride's Run began as a thoroughly enjoyable book, but it declined for me because the introduction of the alpha love interest took away from the protagonist's agency. I don't exactly like the trope to begin with, so maybe it's my personal prejudices rearing their heads. I did actually like the book though, though my review doesn't reflect it. I admire the idea behind the series and will be reading the rest of the books, and hope that the writing and execution improves in the future.

This one is a strange one.
I inexplicably and abruptly completely lost interest at 73% read, I put it down and haven't picked it up again since.
And the strange part is that I thought I was enjoying it up until that point.
Thus the confused rating.
The first half of the book was good, definitely worth 3 stars.
The second half, well I'm not sure if I would have given it more than 2 stars if that's what the whole book had been like.
I think the problem was that I started out reading one type of book and halfway through found myself reading a completely different sort of book. Which I probably would have been more okay with if that's the type of book I had chosen/was expecting to read, if that makes any sense.
Let me try to explain.
The first half of the book matches the summary.
It is about a super tough girl (and werewolf) called Pride who as been raised under appalling conditions. She is essentially a very, very badly treated slave stuck in an impossible situation. But she hasn't let any of this brake her, she is strong, determined, tough as nails and is always looking for a way out AND despite her horrible situation she still cares about her fellow captives and wants to help them as well.
My thoughts at this stage: great! I like this girl and what an interesting sounding book, plenty of grit, extra gritty even - you're immediately cheering Pride on willing her to escape.
Next quarter - she does escape (this isn't a spoiler as it is mentioned in the books blurb, so don't worry I'm doing my best not to spoil!) so escape, yay cue cheers, but she vows to return to help her fellow prisoners and exact her revenge. Part of me was all "no, just run girl! not worth getting caught again!" but I also really admired her determination to help the other people she cared about and, well, who doesn't like a good revenge story?
And that's about when things started to run out of steam, about the same time the love interest made his appearance.
Now I had high hopes for this love interest, who is also mentioned in the books blurb. I was under the impression that, while he would help Pride get in touch with her more human side and come to terms with her dark past, that Pride would still be the tough, independent, strong girl that we read about in the first half of the book.
Not so much.
The thing I really dislike about a lot of werewolf/shifter books is the whole renewal of "hey, sexism and assuming males must be better, smarter, stronger and above all in charge (except it's called 'dominant' or 'alpha') because you know that's just the way it is in 'nature', is okay theme.
It just really, really annoys me.
There has been more than one book that I would have enjoyed if it wasn't for the (infuriating) emergence of this attitude, that turns otherwise strong heroines into submissive, obliging, second class citizens. And the writers portray this as okay because that’s just the way things are for werewolves, shifters etc grrrrrrr! Drives me bananas every time.
So I guess the second half of Pride's run is more about the 'romance' than it is about anything that was set up in the first half of the book and as I wasn't a big fan of this particular romance, I lost interest.
I'm not sure what the last quater if the book is like, perhaps the action picks up again. I might even try to give the last bit of the book a go again someday and find out.
But for now I'm marking it off as finished, as much as I liked the first half of this book the second half turned out to be a bit of a let down for me.

I received Prides Run in return for an honest review from the publisher via NetGalley. Pride has spent her whole life in the captivity of her master living in cages. She is a werewolf who’s been trained to be a tracker who works for her master as a killer. Her parents are dead killed by the master, and now he has plans to mate her to Stone the alpha who hates her in hopes of breaking her. When at the last minute Pride is sent on a mission she knows this may be her only chance to get away before it’s too late. Her target is a young boy her age, but after looking at him he’s also a werewolf and when the chance arises she takes it to run away.

Pride isn't just running from her handlers who will drag her back to her master but also the PTR (Paranormal Task Force) who will put a bullet in her without a second thought. Trusting people doesn’t come easy for Pride but if she’s going to survive she’ll have to trust Logan the stranger at that was her mark. The pair head off into the forest fleeing the PTR as well as her handlers. Pride has never been free before so this is all new, but with the help of Logan he teaches her to survive. Will the PRT or the handlers find her before it’s too late?

I instantly connected with Pride she’s had such a rough life she captured my heart. I rooted her own through the book she’s tough not your wimpy character but she’s also unsure about the real world. I wasn’t sure how I felt about Stone at first but by the end he proved he’s not a bad guy. What can I say about Logan other than he’s awesome; he’s patient with Pride and sees her for the person she is not what she looks like. He’s an honest good guy who I think is perfect to pull her out of her shell and teach her to live among the humans.

I’ve had my eye on Pride’s Run for a long time and when I saw it on NetGalley I had to request it. However it’s sat on my kindle for ages because I just was overwhelmed with books for review. Yesterday morning I selected it, captivated right from the start with Prides story, she’s not your typical werewolf. The whole story is packed full of action, emotions, romance, and self-discovery. I think the author has taken the werewolf concept putting her own unique spin on the idea creating a unique refreshing story. My only complaint is I’m confused what they look like when the shade from human to werewolf some of the descriptions almost make me feel like it’s not a wolf just a tough skinned human body. Other than that I loved the story, the characters are engaging and it kept my drawn in from start to finish. The story does have a potential love triangle which I try to avoid but due to the cliff hanger I know I need to read the next book to see what happens. It was hard to put down I would have stayed up all night if I wasn’t so tried. There is a sex scene but it’s mild so teens as well as adults should enjoy the story.

Lately I’ve been shying away from werewolf books, well technically running in the opposite direction. But when I was approached to read Pride’s Run, I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity. And after reading the story, I’d definitely made the right choice. What initially drew me in was the cover. I’m a sucker for pretty cover art, and Pride’s Run is a perfect example. Having never heard of Cat Kalen, I was a little nervous about what I would be getting myself into with this unknown author. I am very picky about the writing style of an author and if I don’t like the author’s style, I can’t focus on the story. Lucky for me, Cat’s style was perfect. She told an immensely compelling tale without making it complicated to understand.

Pride, the story’s main character, is a seventeen year old werewolf that has spent all her life in captivity on a vineyard in California. The runt of her litter, she is left alone after the death of her parents at the hands of her master. Pride is used as a weapon to seek out and either kill or capture whomever her master says. A year after her mother’s death, Pride finds out that her master wants to mate her with another wolf by the name of Stone. Stone is a nineteen year old alpha who has become increasingly aggressive towards Pride since he was broken three years beforehand. Pride on the other hand, has not and refuses to be broken.

Days before the full moon, Pride’s master sends her on a retrieval mission were she is supposed to capture and return a runaway wolf. Seeing this as her only opportunity, she decides to escape. During her escape however, Pride runs into some unforeseen trouble, and is forced to accept help from her master’s target, Logan. The pair decides to team up and make their way to north to freedom.

One of my favorite things about this story was Cat’s attention to detail. For example, in a lot of werewolf books we hear about a wolf smelling fear, but Cat is the first person to go into detail about the scent. She gives so much detail on the scent, I felt like I could actually smell fear myself. Cat is a fantastic writer and as long as she keeps writing, I’ll keep reading.

Overall, Pride’s Run is a great addition to the werewolf genre and a MUST-READ for any paranormal fan. A well-rounded urban fantasy that won’t leave you disappointed.

A thrilling YA paranormal romance, Pride's Run was a fantastic read. The action had me on the edge of my seat while the romance had me swooning over Logan. I really liked this lovely book.

Pride was a strong character. She went through a lot as a captive of her master, but she refused to let anything break her. She was tough, determined, and I really liked her.

Logan was the love interest and he was wonderful. He was very sweet and strong and determined to protect those he cared about. And, he definitely proved himself as a hero. I absolutely adored him.

The romance was good. Pride and Logan were great together. Even though they were both wary of trusting, they still couldn't deny that they had feelings for each other and I thought that was very sweet. Also, the heat level was a little higher between them than in most YA books, so there was a touch of spice as well. And they were so bad ass together. Nobody stood a chance with the two of them. They were great together and I hope they manage to find a happy ending.

Stone was another major character. At first, I didn't like him. He was mean and cruel and horrible. But, later in the book, we get his reasons for acting the way he did and it changed my whole perspective of him. He was actually very sweet and determined to protect those he loved. By the end of the book I really liked him. He has the potential as another love interest, so we'll see how that goes.

My problem with the book, though, was that I needed more explanation. I didn't fully understand what was going on. I wasn't even sure that they were, in fact, werewolves because the descriptions were unclear and I just had to make an educated guess. But, more than that, why were werewolves being kept as slaves? For what purpose were the "masters" keeping them? I needed more explanation. It wasn't problem enough to ruin the book, but it was enough to take it down a notch.

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. There were definitely enough thrill to keep you on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed the story and the ending has me insanely curious to find out what happens next.

Pride's Run was a fantastic YA paranormal romance. The thrills were nonstop, the romance was lovely, and the secrets revealed were surprising. I really liked this book. YA romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out.

Self-published Amazon freebies can be very hit-or-miss. I am pleasantly surprised to find that Pride's Run by Cat Kalen was a hit for me.

Pride is a seventeen year old girl who is an enslaved wolf-shifter and tracker/hit-woman for a drug lord. Pride is one of those characters who is both intelligent and naive in a very endearing way. Despite her harsh life, which is described prett well by Kalen without being gory, Pride is compassionate and determined to free herself and those she loves while taking down the Master. That is if she can avoid being tracked herself by her Master's henchmen and the Paranormal Task Force (PTF). And her plan is kicked into high gear when she learns she is to be forcibly mated to Stone. A fellow slave who's mind and will have been broken so badly by their Master he has turned cruel and uncaring.

Logan is a nineteen year old escaped slave wolf-shifter himself who just happens to be Pride's mark. He is both street smart and book smart and it just the Alpha Pride needs. She just doesn't know it yet. But one look at Logan and Pride knows he's different. And she quickly finds herself on the run with Logan, trying to stay ahead of the PTF.

Their budding romance was slow to mature and very sweet. Their trek through the forest towards freedom had just enough adventure, excitement and awkward teenage-love moments to keep the story interesting.

However there are some unanswered questions and parts of the story that are a bit lacking in detail. The ending seemed a bit rushed and I think the story would have benefited from a bit more interaction with the characters that are introduced at the end. And there is a little bit of a formatting issue with the Kindle file that could be distracting for some.

But all-in-all a good start to the series and I will definitely move on to book two Pride Unleashed

I really enjoyed this story. It was refreshing to get a wolf shifter story from a completely different point of view - a teenage girl.

Pride is a young girl, an orphan, who lives in captivity. She is forced to track and hunt for her master, while given only the basic necessities in life. Failure to follow the rules is a painful price. But there isn't a moment that she isn't planning, watching, and waiting for her chance to escape.

And there are a couple things that stand in her way. One, she has a tracking gps chip, two, there is a government group called the Paranormal Task Force that hunts her kind and will not hesitate to kill her if they find her. So when she sees the opportunity to escape, she does. But suddenly she has a "partner in crime" - Logan, the subject of her latest assignment from her master.

I really thought the two of them made a great pair as they made their escape. He was an alpha, seemingly knowledgeable about what was happening and the best course of action. She was a young girl, wise beyond her years, full of fire and a strong sense of whats wrong and right.

There was a lot of action in this story, and the scenery was perfect. I really loved the scenes where they were in wolf form. As I've said in the past, I love shifter books because its like getting two stories in one. And the way the author wrote from the wolf's point of view in Pride's Run really made me feel like I was seeing things as a wolf.

And we can't forget Stone, the alpha wolf at the compound whom Pride is sure hates her. Stone seems like a Grade A Jerk for the most part. And I really loved the little twist that his character brings to the story.

All in all I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves wolf shifter stories. It has a lot of action, some romance, and a lot of promise for a great series! The sequel, Pride Unleashed, comes out in February 2012.

Pride and the whole pack of wolves are living in captivity of a cruel master for many years. She dreams of freedom not only for herself but also for the whole pack. She spends her days thinking of ways to escape and find the compassionate pack of wolves that allegedly roam free in Canada. When she's about to escape, she learns that their master is planning on mating her with Stone, the alpha wolf of their pack. He became too cold and dominating alpha to her and the whole pack after their master broke him. Their master believes Pride is too wild and the only way to tame her is motherhood.

Their master has one more task for her before the mating and she is determined to escape once she's out doing her task. The task is to track Logan, a shifter like her, and bring back to her master unharmed. When she found Logan, it turns out that he's one of them and he has escaped their master. Logan promises her freedom and together they set out to find the compassionate pack of wolves who can set their pack free from their master.

I loved this book! The first few pages were a little slow with long narrative paragraphs and very little dialogue but it quickly picks up right after Pride's first match with Stone, the alpha wolf she's supposed to be mated with. The book becomes a page turner when Pride has finally escaped her master. I really liked Pride's personality and yum yum, Logan is one HOT werewolf. He's an alpha but with a heart. There were a lot of twists in the story, it was sooo great! This will definitely be included in my re-reading list...

Pride's Run is the best book #1 I've read this year and I look forward to reading the next instalment. Highly recommended for readers and bloggers looking for a great series to start.

I have not had much experience with wolf/shifter books. I'm not really sure, but I have always been hesitant of them in the past. Pride's Run is my first experience where a wolf is the main focus. And I have to say that I really enjoyed it!

Pride starts out almost broken, but not in the way her master wants. She doesn't know how to trust anyone and she has no social skills at all. I felt so bad for her, she couldn't even accept friendship when it was presented to her. I wanted to see some character growth for her so badly! And it does come, but it is slow. She does not change overnight. She is very much a wolf. But slowly you can see her putting more faith and trust in the hands of Logan.

Logan is so great. He is patient with Pride and you can see how much he truly likes her. He sees how unique she is and I loved how easily and fiercely he protected her. I can't wait to see more of him in the next book. As much as I enjoyed Pride's Run, I think I am going to LOVE the second book even more! The way everything is set up at the end of this story tells me the next book is going to be awesome! There will be two wolves vying for Pride's affection, a whole lot of battles and hopefully a whole lot more Logan!

Pride's Run is wonderfully written. You just get caught up in the writing and the story and you just kind of run along side of it. I lost myself in this book. One second I was casually reading and the next a few hours had passed by and I didn't even notice. Cat's writing kind of sneaks up on you and then before you know it, you are totally hooked. I would definitely recommend this book.

I am pretty reluctant to spend money on self pub stuff, as the quality can be poor and who knows what the writing may be like and I’m pretty picky. However this was on the Kindle Lending library, so I figured for free I would give it a try. It was ok. The main problem with the writing was it was very repetitive. I can’t count how many times she repeated this gorgeous boy is dangerous to me and I can’t show weakness. The wolves were not very well drawn. In wolf shape she often refers to them moving in human terms of touch like running a paw down her back and so on. The world building was weak. The only things I gathered was they could shift at any time, the moon had power over them, and their wolves had a blood thirst more suitable to vampires. None of it is really explained and I never got a sense of how shifters fit into the world. For example why is there are Paranormal Task Force? Does the world in general know about shifters and want them gone? Is it a secret government task force? I might have overlooked all this but then there was the insta love that turned very quickly into a love triangle. In the space of a few days running for their lives they fall in love and sleep together. Then Pride discovers that the boy who she thought was her enemy is actually in love with her and she is torn. That quickly merges into how special she is and they need her help to take down the corrupt system. It was an interesting concept and with editing and fleshing out could have been a very solid novel. If those sorts of things don’t bother you, it’s worth picking up. I on the other hand will not bother with book number 2.
