Comparable to a steampunk Hardy Boys, The Buchanan Brothers and the Botanical Bandits was not entirely the story I was expecting when I picked it up. Upon reading the blurb, I thought for sure it would be more in line with a “whodunnit” but what I got was something closer to a classic gumshoe detective novel with heavy steampunk elements. Luke and John are a pair of bright, polite, and enthusiastic young men who seem to come from a stock of intelligent folk; doctors, astronomers, inventors, etc. And while they show a Jack-of-all-trades flair for education and invention themselves, their true passion lies in following in their late grandfather’s footsteps and helping to solve crimes in Grisham.
The central mystery of BB&BB is a good one, laid out carefully and easy to follow alongside with without it being predictable. From the onset of the novel all the way through to the satisfying conclusion.
Definitely worth the read and introduces a world that I’m sure will have many subsequent novels (Dixon even lays the groundwork for the sequel at the end). The story itself feels like a quicker read than its 250 pages, clipping along as a good pace, and while it’s definitely geared toward a bit of a younger audience I think it could really by enjoyed by all ages. For teens in particular looking to introduce themselves into detective novels, this one is a good segue; a whimsical way to get ones feet wet in the mystery genre.

Way too many errors in basic grammar and syntax, constantly repeating previous plot action, poor plot flow, I can't believe it was written by a caring writer
